break once in a while. activity in the center divide. expect those from time to time. remaining slowing north of our hot. the rest of the bay showing a smooth dry. west 237 at mathilda, the crash blocking one of the slow lanes. while you were sleeping, a teenage driver is under arrest after causality of damage. >> the crime spree included carjacking two cars and crashing into a home. bob redell joins us live in castro valley. anyone hurt in this one, bob? >> reporter: fortunately, no one was hurt. two elderly women live in this home. they were just leaving the home with a neighbor who is helping out. one of the women says she was getting ready to go to bed when the car crashed into the garage. that's pretty much all she had to say. both are physically okay. they are just trying to find another place to live because there is no electricity. when this crash happened, the gas line was ruptured as well.

the suspect is a juvenile, we believe. between midnight and 1:00, the suspect carjacked a white van. it was the sheriff's office who began chasing the car after reports that this person might be armed. they crashed into this home, fled on foot, then carjacked another vehicle a mile away. as you can see in this video, it was a black car. they did not have much luck getting away. the suspect crashed the black car into a fence off astro valley boulevard near 580 and this time was taken into custody. no reports of injuries during the pursuits and crashes. pg&e did caught off the gas at this home. the to elderly ladies, a neighbor was helping out. red cross was on the scene. not certain if they are helping with temporary housing.

so glad they are okay this morning, bob. thank you. >> 5:02. later this morning state hazmat teams will descend on the closed off peninsula home. it is now off-limits after the discovery of radioactive materials. cleaning crews made the discovery yesterday. the home is on cedar street near burton park. it is being sold after neighbors say the homeowner died. workers found six canisters labeled as radioactive. firefighters say the canisters are emitting low level radiation and they are taking no chances. >> a live look at san francisco this morning. in just a few hours, protesters plan to gather at city hall to demand free speech. today's demonstration comes after several far right political figures are pulled off social media sites like facebook. one of them is activist laura lua who has been banned from twitter. she plans to attend today's rally. facebook announcing the accounts

violated policy against dangerous individuals and organizations. 5:03. this morning construction is finished at the calaveras dam. here's a look at the completed 220-foot-high structure at the reservoir located near the alameda/santa clara county line. $823 million project is the largest project built in the bay area for 20 years. it is part of earthquake upgrades that stay lawmakers ordered back in 2002. later today, a competition event is being held. >> san jose could soon see a building boom. not in downtown but in back yards around the city. permit applications for granny units up 400% since the city eased requirements. the nonprofit housing trust

way to wake up on this friday. just a few clouds over the bay looking at san francisco. mostly clear especially for the inland areas. coastal clouds will help cool it down. a nice warmup today with martinez starting out at 52 degrees at 7:00. we see it warming up into the upper 60s by 11:00. 76 degrees at 1:00. and a little bit warm for this time of year. but it's going to be exactly like yesterday. the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen showing changes for the weekend. we're up to 79 in gilroy today. cupertino reaching 78 degrees. winds will still be breezy, reaching 80 in walnut creek. vallejo, 78 degrees. 70 in oakland today. 64, daly city. redwood city at 76 degrees. and in the upper sunsouter suns breezes 15 miles per hour with higher gusts.

"today in the bay" bob redell joins us live in castro valley. kind of remarkable no one was hurt. >> reporter: it is remarkable no one was hurt, laura and marcus, especially when you look at the damage here to this home on parsons and wilson. you can see this video ran into this garage here. we just spoke briefly with one of the two elderly women who live here. they were escorted out by a neighbor about 30 minutes ago, trying to find another place to live since there is no gas or electric to this home. one of the women was telling us she was about to go to bed when the car crashed into the garage. they are unhurt. just an issue of them unfortunately having to find another place to live. the suspect behind this vehicle

we believe is a juvenile. sometime between midnight and 1:00 this morning, this person carjacked a white van in san leandro, 300 avenue of escondido. alameda county sheriff's office began chasing this. they fled on foot. then carjacked another vehicle a mile away at somerset. this was a black car. again, the carjacker did not have much luck getting away. the suspect crashed into a fence off castro valley near 580 and was caught by law enforcement, taken into custody. again, remarkably no reports of injuries during these pursuits and crashes. pg&e, in regards to the home behind me, they have turned off the gas. so there is no threat of fire or anything like that. bob redell, "today in the bay". sad situation, for what it's worth, a good outcome that no one was hurt, bob.

thank you. chp hopes other drivers will know what led up to a freeway shooting that put a huge wrench in last night's commute. it happened 6:00 last night on northbound 880 near the 238 interchange. officers did shut down all lanes 30 minutes just to look for evidence. investigators are still trying to get a description of the shooter's vehicle. oakland police this weekend will again be adding extra patrols in an effort to get tough on sideshow activity. authorities also promise adding surveillance with helicopters and maximum punishment for anyone caught doing sideshow activity. oakland is not the only one getting tough. san jose passed an ordnance to punish sideshow spectators with fines and possible jail time. 5:33. san francisco is suing the trump administration over a policy that the city attorney says could lead to discrimination in health care and cost the city up

to a billion dollars in federal funding. >> the president believes it could give people their own rights. kris sanchez joins us with some of the specifics on this. kris? >> reporter: hi there, laura and marcus. the san francisco city attorney filed the lawsuit within hours of the president's pledge to uphold some of the rules that have been on the books for years now. in a rose garden announcement on the national day of prayer, the president said it is about allowing citizens to live according to their faith and convictions. >> we finalized new protections of conscience rights for tpebgzs, pharmacists, teachers, students and faith-based charities. >> reporter: it sounds similar enough. in order to qualify for federal funds, they would have to comply with 25 conscience rules which allows providers to refuse

to a controversial water tunnel project. he is scrapping a plan to build two giant tunnels. it was used to deliver water from the sacramento river to the bay area, san joaquin valley and southern california. instead, they want to build a single tunnel with a different design and lower price. this isn't the only major process changed since taking office. he is reversing course on the high-speed rail plan. he is focusing on finishing the line currently under construction. a student at one high school will find an unusual and controversial story in the new edition on of their school newspaper. a fellow student talks about her work in the pornography business. here's a sweet from the high school newspaper declaring the new edition will be distributed this morning. it contains a profile on a student who is working in the adult entertainment industry. a teacher advises the student journalist and tells the

defender bill barr didn't show up for his hearings. white house press secretary sarah sanders made fun of the idea questioning by members of congress weren't smart enough to ask their own questions. questions from staff or hired lawyers are not new. it happened in the whitewater hearings, most recently in the kavanaugh hearings when the republicans brought an outside lawyer to ask all those questions. and frowning at a stunt by a democratic congressman who brought in a ceramic chicken and a bucket of fried chicken on barr reluctance to testify.

the answer is to get mueller on the stand. here in california, the state senate passed a bill that requires candidates for president to release their taxes, something mr. trump has been unwilling to do. other states are working on similar bills. it is not the first time we have done this. governor brown vetoed the same bill in 2017 when he was governor. we can't find any record of jerry brown releasing his taxes when he ran for the most recent term or when he ran for president during the 90s. bonkers good numbers in business and tech. firefighters have been known to save cats from trees. how about saving kittens from fire trucks? meet smoky and ember. cute names there. the truck was in the shot for maintenance, they found these in the back of an alameda county fire truck.
