hi, everybody, good morning. welcome to "today." so many of us who loved "star wars" are really sad to see the man who played chewbacca and brought him to life has passed away. >> that wookiee warrior gone. here is the thing. tomorrow a big day for "star wars" fans. >> that's right. >> may the fourth be with you. >> that's right. we will remember him fondly in a moment. right to our top story. it's a real stunner. someone who was once a notorious member of al-qaeda, who plot today blow up the new york subway system is going to be free in a matter of days. a judge and federal prosecutor say he has earned a second chance. justice correspondent pete williams with the remarkable story this morning. good morning. >> reporter: he drove to new york city in a rental car nearly ten years ago planning to join two other men in a series of suicide bomb attacks on the subways, but he got cold feet, eventually pleaded guilty and met with the fbi more than 100 times revealing everything he knew about al-qaeda.

it's one of the most successful flips in the history of the u.s. war on terror. najibullah zazi convicted of plotting a massive suicide attack on the new york subway system in 2009 will be a free man after almost a decade of cooperation with federal prosecutors. >> mr. zazi has changed dramatically. i have witnessed that transformation over the past ten years. >>. >> reporter: the fbi says he has been a critical source of information about al-qaeda based on the time he spent in its terror training camps in pakistan and the people he met there. he helped foil a planned attack on a u.s. military base in afghanistan, a terror attack on a shopping mall in england and another plot to attack a newspaper in denmark. >> based on the recommendations in this case, he obviously provided quite a bit of information. >> reporter: zazi could have faced multiple life sentences with no chance for parole. instead prosecutors suggested a far shorter sentence citing zazi's extraordinary assistance

providing critical intelligence and unique insight regarding al-qaeda, information that led to terrorism charges against numerous individuals. the government says his cooperation came at great personal cost to himself and family. zazi apologized in court thursday saying he is not the same person he was when he planned to attack the subways. a federal judge sentenced the now 33-year-old to time served, about ten years, saying to zazi, this one unthinkable second chance has come your way and you earned it. >> pete, you cannot overstate how extraordinary this is. here you have an al-qaeda terrorist with a complete change of heart. we do not see this every day. >> no, many never change when they are behind bars. this is extremely unusual. we knew about some of the attacks he helped to prevent because he testified in some of those trials. but others have yet to be revealed. this letter to the judge

describing the full extent of his cooperation has several sections blacked out describing his help in other cases we may never know about. one of the prosecutors says he has no reservations about zazi's mindset today. >> all right. incredible story. thank you very much. to the war of words between democrats and the white house over the mueller report and attorney general william barr in the wake of his no-show on capitol hill yesterday. nbc white house correspondent peter alexander in washington this morning. good to see you. >> good morning. this standoff between the white house and house democrats has been escalating for months. the latest confrontation, house speaker nancy pelosi calling out the attorney general, stopping short of calling for president trump's impeachment, but comparing the president's behavior, specifically ignoring congressional subpoenas, to richard nixon. >> reporter: president trump defending william barr in an interview with fox news. >> i think they are treating our attorney general, who is a highly respected man, very

unfairly. >> reporter: house speaker nancy pelosi accusing barr of breaking the law, lying to congress. >> the attorney general of the united states of america was not telling the truth to the congress of the united states. that's a crime. >> reporter: zeroing in on this exchange during a hearing last month. >> reports have emerged recently, general, that members of the special counsel's team are frustrated at some level with the limited information included in your march 24th letter. do you know what they are referencing with that? >> no, i don't. >> reporter: that answer appears to contradict mueller's revealed letter to barr before that hearing, complaining barr's four-page account did not capture the substance, context and nature of the report. writing speaker pelosi's baseless attack on the attorney general is reckless, irresponsible and false. the latest showdown over barr's decision not to show up for thursday's hearing before the house judiciary committee with

barr's seat empty, the democratic chair vowed to hold the a.g. accountable. >> we can stand up to this president in defense of the country and the constitution and the liberty we love, or we can let the moment pass us by. >> reporter: what options do democrats have to force barr to testify? they could subpoena him, but he could simply ignore it. the house could vote to hold barr in contempt then ask the u.s. attorney to pursue criminal charges or the house could file a contempt lawsuit against barr, but those moves would likely fail. the feud is boiling over on capitol hill. >> the reason bill barr is not here today is because the democrats decided they didn't want him here today. >> reporter: one democrat mocking barr for being chicken, bringing a bucket of kfc to the hearing. >> spectacle notwithstanding, what is next? >> well, obviously, as you know, we have been paying close attention to democrats. they have been calling for the special counsel robert mueller to testify. a source says the house

judiciary committee is moving forward with plans. the committee has begun discussio discussions directly with mueller's team about him to testify. no date has been set. >> sounds like we will hear from bob mueller. >> peter alexander, thank you, sir. now to a powerful scene in north carolina. hundreds lining the streets to honor riley howell, the heroic student who stopped the unc-charlotte student and lost his life. we are hearing from other families impacted by this week's school shooting. morgan chesky has the story this morning. good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. the campus of unc-charlotte and across the country tributes are pouring in. those two students killed in this attack. this morning we're also learning more about the four others wounded when the gunman opened fire. this morning the people of waynesville, north carolina, are making plans to honor a hometown

hero. >> he is a hero. >> reporter: that young man riley howell. in class at unc-charlotte when a gunman opened fire tuesday. the 21-year-old killed as he charged the shooter, taking him to the ground. his family devastated, but beyond proud. >> all these people are calling him a hero and stuff, but he has always been my hero. >> to me it just was fitting what his actions were and how he served others. >> reporter: howell's remains given a full police escort back to his hometown as people line the streets to pay respects. his mother calling the procession a phenomenal honor, riley would have loved it. this morning we're learning the four other students shot are expected to survive. one of them emily halp, determined to walk across the stage for graduation next week. another still hospitalized, his family writing drew continues to recover and the watchful eye of

his medical team and loving family. the former student accused in the shooting is now formally charged. >> what are the charges? a. all >> reporter: trystan terrell choosing not to be in court. two counts of murder, four of attempted murder, among others. his motive still unknown. and back on campus a memorial to those lost grows by the day. >> i just wish we had more of us like him. a beautiful soul. beautiful soul. >> reporter: and this morning the howell family tells us that funeral arrangements for riley are set for this upcoming sunday. meantime, on campus the chancellor says conversations have already start today find a permanent way to honor those victims. >> morgan chesky in charlotte, thank you. under pressure to crack down on extremist content, facebook now announcing bans on a number

of high-profile figures and groups that it calls dangerous. nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer has details on a story that a lot of folks are talking about. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. facebook isn't just the world's largest social media platform. it's where many get news and other information. now the site is working to remove voices they have deemed harmful to all. >> this morning some of the nation's most divisive voices silenced. facebook banning several several prominent extremist groups, including alex jones of infowars and louis fair crakhan. it's the social media company's latest effort to stop the spread of misinformation and radical behavior across its platforms which includes instagram. facebook labeling the groups dangerous, telling nbc news in a statement, we've always banned individuals oregons that promote or engage in violence and hate regardless of ideology.

the process of evaluating potential violators is extensive and led us to our decision to remove these accounts today. t infowars led by jones faces the harshest ban. facebook and instagram pledging to remove any posts containing infowars' content unless that post condemns the radical site. jones most known for pedaling conspiraci conspiracies about the sandy hook elementary shooting falsely calling the massacre a hoax, later blaming it on psychosis. nbc news reached out to louis farakhan. facebook's ceo mark zuckerberg announced a redesign of the site. >> we are working hard to completely remove groups if they exist primarily due to violate our policies or do things that are dangerous. >> reporter: twitter, youtube, and apple have already banned jones and infowars and facebook

briefly banned the two back in february of 2018. facebook's new ban comes as the company and other social media platforms face pressure to better police their content and eliminate online hate speech that could inspire violent acts. >> miguel, this would seem to be quite the significant move by facebook. anything else they are doing to restrict harmful content? >> in addition to the new ban, facebook says the company also uses algorithms and editors to catch harmful content. they also rely on users to report other people they believe are breaking their rules and spreading messages of hate. >> miguel, thank you. as mentioned, the galaxy is remembering one much its largest stars. peter may shoe, the 7'3" actor who played chewbacca in the "star wars" sag a has passed away. here is nbc's joe fryer.

>> reporter: he is best known for his role as the gentle giant from a galaxy far, far away. >> it's not wise. >> reporter: this morning fans and co-stars are remembering peter mayhew, the man who brought "star wars" furry sidekick chewbacca to life for more than 30 lives. >> chewie, take care of yourself, okay? >> reporter: mayhew's family sa said the actor passed away tuesday surrounded by loved ones. he poured his heart and soul in the role of chewbacca, his family said, but to him the "star wars" family meant so much more to him than a role in a film. >> chewie, is that you? >> reporter: chuy's companion han solo saying we were partners in film and friends in life for over 30 years and i loved him. mark hamill who played luke skywalker tweeting i'm a better man for having known him.

anyway, we are looking at more wet weather for our friends in texas, oklahoma, little rock all the way into louisville, kentucky. it's a mess there. and we've got a risk of flooding from san antonio, texarkana, little rock all the way into the appalachians. 6 million people at risk for severe weather throughout central texas. we have this low pressure stationary front combo eventually becomes a cold front, but it's more rain over areas that have already been saturated. tomorrow a flood risk from pennsylvania to arkansas. strong storms continue. the northeast sunday is going to be a washout. anything you can do on the weekend, do it on saturday bus lo because we are talking from 3 to 4 inches, 5 inches through tekds. heavy amounts in the northeast as well. airport delays a mess today. san antonio, dallas, possibly kansas city, new york, atlanta, and orlando. down in florida they will have a lot of rain, too. and jacksonville to new york, i-95 will be a mess.

of al qaeda pled guilty to terrorism related charges but was rewarded after spending nearly a decade helping the united states identify and prosecute terrorists. a district judge described his cooperation as unprecedented. a soldier recovering after falling from a 300-foot-high cliff into hawaii's kilauea volcano. the man was visiting the park and climbed over a metal guardrail to get a better view of the volcano. that is when the ground beneath him collapsed. another visitor saw the man fall and told authorities. he was airlifted to the hospital and is now in stable condition. tiger woods will visit the white house on monday. that's where president trump will award the legendary golfer with the presidential medal of freedom. that's the nation's highest honor for a civilian. woods won his 15th major last month at augusta, winning the masters for the fifth time. monday's ceremony is set to take

but the authorities want people to recognize that when a great white attacks, they're not actually attacking humans. they simply see humans as their favorite meal. a seal. with summer once again on the horizon, government officials in cape cod are considering a novel new approach to protecting one group of seasonal tourists. human beach-goers from another. great white sharks. >> what i expect this summer is that the shark is going to move in close to shore to feed on the seals, of which we have lots of right now and will for the next several months. >> locals are understandably nervous. >> we venture in. i wouldn't go in that far, though. >> kind of exciting, but, you know, a little bit dangerous for people that aren't aware. >> reporter: last summer gave them good reason to be afraid. >> i have a report of an unknown shark bite, male party. >> reporter: isaac rocha was yards away when his friend, 26 year-old arthur, was dragged under.

>> i heard him screaming and i saw a lot of blood in the water. and i saw the shark's tail. >> reporter: he was killed. the first shark fatality in massachusetts in 82 years. just weeks earlier -- >> long nook beach, a subject possibly bitten by a shark in the thigh. >> reporter: 62-year-old william lighten attacked and survived by punching the shark in its sensitive gills. >> its head was out of water. it was like a wrestling hold and tried to tip me over. >> reporter: authorities now taking shark safety seriously. >> what we're trying to do is find some kind of solution that's going to work. and unfortunately, that does not exist at this time. >> reporter: they have hired an independent group to study preventive measures from drones to scan the ocean from the air and s.o.n.a.r. like this smart buoy system to track sharks below the surface.

they are even considering seal contraception to limit the sharks' favorite food source. the main goal this summer is to stop attacks from becoming fatalities by installing top the bleed kits, containing tourniquets on beaches and extra 911 call boxes, which will all be in place by june. in the absence of a solid defense, they say, knowledge and awareness are key. >> at this stage, it's just a matter of educating the public about the presence of these animals. >> and kerry, a lot of people do love to get in the water as we get closer to summer. are there things you can do to kind of ward this off and hopefully not have this happen to you? >> reporter: of course, experts say that, you know, you can get attacked, savannah, at any time in the water. but they have charted the history of attacks and found that many of the attacks happen in the early morning hours and then again at sunset. so they say it's best to stay out of the water during those hours. and if you're wearing jewelry, take it off. because it can look shiny, and in the water, it can look like the scales of a fish, which, of
