the st. johns river, a jet carrying 136 passengers and seven crew members ended up in the river late friday and everyone escaped with their lives. the boeing 737 was traveling from the naval station in guantanamo bay to another in jacksonville. boeing said it's aware of the incident and looking into it. jacksonville mayor lenny curry live tweeted updates and said president trump called to offer help as the situation was developing. more than 80 local responders assisted in ensuring everyone got off the plane. 21 people were transported to area hospitals for nonlife threatening injuries. >> would you call it a miracle that there were no serious injuries? >> i don't take that kind of approach to anything. i'm much more of a secular kind of guy. >> and we do want to add that there is word there are pets that are stuck on the plane that have not been retrieved. no word on their fate as of right now.

>> kathy thank you. other news now, breaking overnight, a huge explosion at an industrial plant in the chicago suburbs, the blast setting off a massive fire and several people this morning are still missing. we have more now from nbc's molly hunter. >> we have like 30 911 calls coming in. there's some sort of explosion. we felt it rock the police department too. >> overnight firefighters doing battle after a massive explosion and now actively searching for survivors. >> there were nine people in the building at the beginning of the incident. we had accounted for six. we are unable to account for three subjects at this point. >> north of chicago, a plastics factory blew up around 9:30 p.m. security cameras captured the exact moment the fireball lit up the night's sky. >> it was just a big boom. it kind of felt like a freight train hitting the complex. it was almost enough to buckle your knees. it was pretty rough. >> reporter: the building flattened, the debris scattered for blocks, the area was

immediately locked down as firefighters rushed in. >> i would categorize this as a massive explosion. many neighboring properties are going to have damage. >> reporter: the lake county sheriff's department tweeted we are aware of a very loud explosion sound and ground shaking. authorities say at least four factory workers were taken to hospitals with injuries. >> the plant was open and active during the explosion. >> reporter: as fire crews continue to put out the flames, authorities are now investigating the cause of the blast. molly hunter, nbc news. tensions are rising this morning between the u.s. and north korea. overnight, the north koreans reportedly fired several missiles into the sea. nbc's janice mackey frayer is covering this story for us. what can you tell us. >> reporter: this move is likely to raise tensions as talks with the u.s. have stalled and the lines of communication with pyongyang have apparently gone silent. there's a lot that isn't known about what happened this

morning. south korean officials tell nbc news that several short range missiles were fired. they traveled about 125 miles before landing in the sea. national security adviser john bolton briefed president trump late last night, and the white house saying they are aware of the situation and are monitoring this. this would be the first missile test by north korea in 500 days. it was in 2017 that kim jong un and announced that he was finished with missile testing for now, declaring a self-imposed moratorium on long range ballistic missile testing. the pattern developing seems to be kim sending a message, albeit a risky one, that he wants a break through in talks. there's been a stalemate since the collapse of the hanoi summit since president trump walked away without a deal. however at the time he said he had a pledge from kim jong un that there would no return to testing. so what happened today, what happened in april seems to

be signaling that kim is willing to escalate tension with the u.s. in order to gain some leverage. sheinelle, peter. >> jackie mackey frayer, thank you. parts of the midwest are under water after a rash of spring storms combined with heavy snow melt. davenport, iowa, on the banks of the mississippi was overwhelmed when a temporary dam gave away flooding the entire downtown area there. the mississippi river is at the highest level in 153 years. our morgan chesky is in davenport with more on that as well as dangerous storms in the south. morgan, good morning. >> reporter: peter, good morning, 42 days. that's how long the mississippi river has been in major flood stage. we're seeing a direct result of that in davenport, iowa, cars are submerged, drivers not having enough time to drive them out of the way before the waters moved in. businesses are doing their best with sandbags.

everyone here forced to wait and watch for these waters to recede. it's the surveillance video from davenport, iowa, the moment the barrier holding back the mississippi gave way. >> i was in sheer panic for five minutes, and i got a phone call from someone else saying everyone is accounted for, everyone is safe. >> pumps and sandbags are failing to keep the water out. iowa swamped by mounting snow and pouring rain this season. according to one official, more precipitation than has ever been recorded. the river crested at a new high near the quad cities, 22.7 feet. eclipsing the great flood of 1993, the losses then added up to $15 million. officials are just beginning to total the new damage. >> it was absolutely devastating. the damage down here is unlike anything i have seen. >> down river, many more communities swamped in misery. in indiana, a 2-year-old died on a country road after his mother

said she mistakenly drove into 8 feet of water. to the south, hard hit texas saw another round of dangerous weather friday night. flash flooding in the austin area, still recovering from tornadoes that demolished a historic church in lagrange. >> it saddens me because the church has so much history. the church is over 200 years old. >> nearby, workers hunkered down in their office as the twister ripped the adjoining building to piece. >> literally was a split second. life changes in the blink of an eye. my wife asked me, did you see god today, and so i did see god today. >> reporter: and this morning, a flood warning remains very much in effect for davenport, iowa, as for when this water will recede, it could take weeks, in some cases months. president trump extending his support to governors of three states saying federal help is needed if they request it. >> morgan chesky on the ground in iowa, thanks.

president trump talking to russian leader vladimir putin on friday for the first time since the release of the mueller report. but it's what the president didn't say to putin that has his critics fuming. white house correspondent kelly o'donnell joins us with more. kelly, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, sheinelle. russia says that the united states initiated that call. the white house won't say either way. they will tell us that the president and putin talked about north korea just hours before that unexpected launch. they also talked about russia's influence in venezuela and the possibility of some kind of updated nuclear weapons talks. but what they did not discuss really says a lot. on the line for more than an hour friday, president trump and vladimir putin, their first conversation since the release of the mueller report. aides say their call was by telephone, not video conference, despite the president's description of putin.

>> he actually sort of smiled when he said something to the effect that it started off as a mountain and it ended up being a mouse, but he knew that because he knew there was no collusion whatsoever. >> reporter: notably the president said he did not warn putin to stay out of the next u.s. election. >> we didn't discuss that. >> reporter: a subject avoided despite the mueller report conclusion that russia carried out a coordinated campaign to disrupt the 2016 election. a contention the president publicly questions side by side with putin in helsinki last year. this coming week, the public testimony of two major figures, mueller and mcgahn, is up in the air. president trump punting on whether special counsel robert mueller should testify on capitol hill. >> i don't know. that's up to our attorney general who i think has done a fantastic job. >> reporter: and mr. trump said a decision is looming on whether former white house counsel don

mcgahn will testify. >> that will all be determined over the next week or so. >> reporter: but attorney general william barr faces new pressure from democrats in congress, a monday morning deadline. the house judiciary committee demanding full access to all redacted evidence in the mueller report. or else the committee will move to contempt proceedings and seek further legal recourse. >> kelly, of course the other domestic headline friday, we got some new economic numbers that showed the economy is in great shape. more good news for the president. unemployment at its lowest level in half a century. more than 100 consecutive months of growth, dates back to 2010, president obama's first term, but you have this juxtaposition, this roaring economy and a norm busting president whose approval rating is hovering just above 40%. isn't this the dynamic that's going to define the next 18 months coming up to the 2020 election. >> a good economy should be a glide path for a president's reelection, and given the

circumstances around this white house, and the impulsive and news making nature of this president, some gets taken over by other events from the white house's own making. and things from the outside world, things we're seeing in venezuela and north korea. the president will try to hammer down good statistics. in year three he's allowed to claim some credit, though it began in the obama years. but there will be so many other issues they will contest, and the president's troubled numbers when it comes to his own approval does set up a different dynamic. a good economy should be helpful, and there are these other questions about the president, it will be an underpinning of the 2020 campaign for sure. >> battle lines are certainly drawn. kelly o'donnell on the north lawn, good to see you, thanks. let's check with dylan at churchill downs, good morning. >> good morning, i switched up my hat for the first weather hit. this a bridle and a rose in the

run for the roses. this comes from the kentucky derby museum. they brought a couple of their favorite hats from last year. people create all kinds of wild hats. this one subtle, wait until you see the next one. let's get to the weather. we've got a whole lot of rain moving into parts of the south. you can see all across louisiana and northern mississippi, northern alabama, we have torrential downpours, we even have the chance of severe storms with a severe thunderstorm watch across most of southern louisiana. that's because we could see large hail and damaging winds with these storms as they continue to move to the east today. these will produce a whole lot of rainfall. we have flash flood watches in effect across the appalachians to parts of maryland that does also include washington, d.c. where we could see really heavy rain later today and into and then for the northeast, we're going to see a whole lot of rain tomorrow. this afternoon, most likely from north carolina to southeastern louisiana, hail and damaging winds will be our biggest threat. with winds over 60 miles per

hour, there is the chance we could see damage there, and rainfall could be up to an inch or two as the cold front moves eastward. it's moving east through the day, and will affect the northeast all through the day on sunday. we've got a bit of cloud cover out there. 53 degrees right now in san jose. a cooling trend is expected this weekend. as we begin to see the marine layer kind of hugging the coastline. we will expect to see a chance of some cooling, at least for certain areas, especially in the south bay. 75 degrees in san jose. so we will still be pleasantly warm, just a little cooler. morgan hill, 78 degrees, in through the east bay, 79 for danville. and oakland, 59. and if you've been hanging around the coastline, we could get showers by tomorrow night. and that's your latest forecast, guys. >> thank you, dylan, don't go anywhere. >> strong hat game from dylan. coming up next, we're going to take you back to churchill downs for a look at who's going to be there for this wide open run for the roses later today.

we're back on this saturday morning, and the excitement is building just a few hours ahead of the 145th annual kentucky derby. this is always a special day. we want to show you this floral display, live on our plaza. this is a life sized horse and jockey from mr. flower fantastic, a self-taught flower artist from here in new york. nbc commissioned him to create the piece using 25,000 roses. i better be coming home with a couple thousands of those. today's race is up for the grabs, the run for the roses has no clear favorite but potentially muddy track conditions. >> dylan is back with more from churchill downs. i saw your post this morning. it looks so peaceful and beautiful now. >> it is. this is actually the biggest

secret. this is my favorite time to be at churchill downs, as horses are taking their practice laps around the track this morning. in a couple of hours, all eyes will be on this track for the running of the kentucky derby, and by the looks of it, there's a chance we could see some rain. today's storms will not top last year's record rainfall by any means. it could make for a sloppy track come race time. not even the weather whether dampen the spirits at churchill downs where anticipation is building. >> just hours until the kentucky derby gets underway, the event that's called the greatest two minutes in sports is now shaping up to be one of the wettest. >> if you've got boots, take them, make sure that you have those ready to go. >> showers have already dumped heavy rain on churchill downs and another inch is expected today. that means the track will be a muddy mess. jockeys using the friday morning thunderstorms as an opportunity to take their horses on one last rain soaked practice ride. >> 15 of the horses that are

running in the derby have run on an off track before, so it won't be the first time for a lot of these horses to face those conditions. >> the rain complicates what's already considered a wide open race after early favorite omaha beach dropped out earlier this week suffering from a breathing condition. >> we had to do the right thing by the horse. >> another, heichel scratched on friday due to a sore hoof. the race now anyone's to win. >> i talked to i would say a half dozen people since the scratch of omaha beach and i have gotten a half dozen different opinions on what's going to happen now. >> those starting gate changes mean better odds for horses like improbable, and the new front winner, game winner. under the watch of bob badford, looking for his 6th derby win. going into this race, how do you choose. >> i did my best i can to prepare them.

to san francisco, definitely indicative of a cooling trend. here is a look at the temperatures for the day today, 73 in palo alto. 59 for san francisco. and 76 in napa. so still warm, enjoyable but a cooldown compared to what we've seen the last few days. 60s along the coast and bay. mid-70s inland. and low 80s as well. even a further cooldown as we go into sunday, tomorrow. under new scrutiny, california's attorney general is launching an investigation into how catholic diocese handled sex abuse allegations. among the biggest questions, did church officials report allegations to law enforcement? becera says his office will investigate all 12 diocese, the san jose diocese released a statement in part, reading in the spirit of transparency, we are carefully reviewing the request and intend to cooperate

appreciate it. >> we want to begin this half hour with a check of the headlines, first a scary scene when a jet liner slid off a runway and into a river while landing in jacksonville, florida, friday night. it's being called a miracle that all 136 passengers and 7 crew members survived this crash into relatively shallow water. 21 people were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries. the boeing 737 was arriving from cuba when hit hit rough weather landing at jacksonville. a mix of civilian and military personnel were on board. facilities flair across the border overnight. gaza militants sent 90 rockets into israel, and israel launched an air strike in response killing one palestinian. on friday, two hamas militants were killed by an israeli air strike, two others were shot by israeli troops while taking part in protests along the border.

explosion that officials described as ground shaking, rocked a town. it happened shortly before 10:00 in the evening central time. four workers were injured. at least three others are still missing. crews worked all night to try to contain those flames. the cause of the explosion is still being investigated. >> and how about this, a record four overtime thriller in what was the longest nba playoff game in 66 years. the portland trailblazers topped the denver nuggets. 140-137 to take a 2-1 lead in their best of 7 series but it took three hours and 25 minutes after the two teams were tied at the end of regulation. and then three more overtime periods. no doubt the players are a little tired this morning. >> good news is they get to do it again tomorrow night. an update on the cruise ship placed under quarantine in the caribbean because a crew member

was confirmed to have the measles. this morning, the ship is arriving at its home port with nearly 300 passengers and crew on board. but the question is what happens next: nbc's tammy leitner is following that story. tammy, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, peter, i can tell you the ship arrived about an hour ago. it's unclear if the 300 passengers will be allowed to leave the ship today. health officials tell me if there's any risk at all, those passengers will have to remain on board. >> the church of scientology's religious retreat and humanitarian trip. >> this promotional video shows the free winds, the cruise ship believed to have been under quarantine after someone contracted measles. the ship carrying 300 passengers returning to its home port of curacao containing passengers.

>> in any case, try to prevent the spread of the disease. >> reporter: earlier this week, the free winds was quarantined in st. lucia for two days where officials diagnosed the measles virus in a crew member. >> given the high, other officials in the vessel may have been in contact with and allowed possibly infectious, a decision was made not to allow persons to disembark. >> st. lucia's chief medical officer says the ship's doctor had requested 100 vaccines before leaving port. nbc news has reached out to the church of scientology multiple times for comment. the quarantine comes amid a surge of cases from california to new york. it's unclear how many of the passengers on board the freewinds had measles vaccinations and nbc news is being told passengers will have to provide vaccination records before being let off the ship.
