your thing. vianey has a look at the micro climate forecast. >> i want to wear one of those big beautiful hats. >> any excuse to wear a good hat. >> stylish. and looking beautiful. but we do have some coastal clouds hanging out. the sun will be coming out a combination of sun and clouds. san francisco, 51 degrees right now, and our microclimate highs will be a couple of degrees cooler a little bit of a cooler trend under way. patchy fog along the coast. but the daytime highs will be topping out in the upper 50s for san francisco. so definitely make sure to wear a sweater being out in the city all weekend, sightseeing or anything like that, and in oakland, upper 60s, 69 degrees. and then we warm up just a little bit, into the south bay, and 75 degrees, and then into the valley areas like concord, we will still top out in the 80s. a good spread of micro climates and a chance of showers, we will

give you timing on that. >> a lot to track all right. see you in 15, thank you. we begin with a fiery crash that left at least one person dead and shut down highway 101 in south san francisco overnight. it happened around 12:45 this morning on northbound 101 near sierra point parkway. the chp says it remains clear how the crash started but we know five cars include agriculture bus were involved. more than a dozen people were on board the tour bus. several people were taken to the hospital to be treated. three of the vehicles involved were engulfed in flames including the tour bus and crews say they had a hard time fighting the fire. >> out here on the freeway, we don't have any active water supplies, no hydrants around, so we set up a water shuttle where we had a primary pumping engine suppressing the fire and multiple other fire resources, fire engines to shuttle water back and forth. >> all four northbound lanes were shut down for several

hours. one lane is now back open. traffic is being diverted to the bay shore boulevard off-ramp. now, to developing news in florida, where a jetliner slides off a runway into a river. and authorities say all of the people on board are lucky to be alive. the boeing 737 with 143 people on board veered off the runway of a military base and ended up in the st. john's river. this is near jacksonville. it was a military charter flight, flying from guantanamo bay, cuba, and arriving at naval air station jacksonville. as it was landing, the jet skidded off the runway, and right into the river. look at that. it's not clear what went wrong. the plane was carrying 136 passengers and seven crew members. by the way, this was a boeing 737-800, not the 737 max version that's been in the news recently. our aviation analyst mike mccarron weighed in on what investigators will have to look

into. >> we will have to figure out in the morning, when we start looking at what happened, and look at the cockpit recorder and flight data recorder and see exactly where they were when they touched down, did the brakes have a problem, did they come in too fast, too high and put the pieces of the puzzle back together. >> the flight is made twice a week. 21 people were taken to local hospitals. again authorities say it was a miracle there were no major injuries. in the coming days, there certainly will be more stories to be told. be sure to stay with us for the latest from florida. we have been tweeting updates. be sure to check our handle and follow us at @nbc bay area. to a developing story oversea, nbc news has confirmed last night that north korea fired several missiles from the eastern coast. south korean officials say they were short range missiles that traveled no more than 14 miles. none reaching japan. president trump has been briefed on the launch. the white house released a statement, saying, quote, we are

aware of north korea's actions tonight. we will continue to monitor as necessary. back here locally, you may have to take a cab again like the good old days because getting around san francisco may be tricky in the coming weeks. that's because uber and lyft drivers are planning a day of protest, saying they want to be treated better. today, we have more on why the timing of the strike for uber is extra important. >> reporter: uber drivers may hit the brakes in san francisco wednesday, unplugging from the ride share app in protest, striking for better wages and benefits. >> the health insurance would be nice. that would help. >> reporter: not every driver we spoke to in san francisco knew about the plan. some didn't think it was necessary. >> yeah, it's fine sometimes. >> reporter: the may 8 strike is also usually organized in l.a., chicago, new york, and london. it comes the day before uber is expected to go public. the company could be valued at $90 billion.

>> i didn't use it. >> some uber drivers support the drivers effort. >> they're not getting health care or benefits or 401(k) and all they're getting is the fare, so they should get paid more. >> nbc bay area news. now to two south bay businesses that abruptly shut down. test results showed elevated levels of lead at both target masters left and sweet's gymnastics in milpitas, next door to one another. the health department is working to assess how serious the risk is for those who visited the businesses. it is not clear what prompted health officials to visit the businesses in the first place. under new scrutiny, california's attorney general is launching an investigation into how catholic diocese handle sex abuse allegations. among the big questions is did church officials report allegations to law enforcement? attorney general javier becera says his office will audit all 12 of the state's roman catholic

dioceses, and that includes san francisco and san jose. the diocese of san jose released a statement in part saying in the spirit of transparency, the diocese of san jose is carefully reviewing the request and intends to cooperate with the attorney general's office. now, to a man arrested for animal cruelty. after a group of sick dogs were found in a trailer. police say this man you see here, jeremiah weberling had ten dog, none of them with food nor water. they're currently being treated by a veterinarian. sadly one of the dogs died. two of the dogs were so sick, they had to be euthanized. mobbed by teens. we are now hearing from a woman victimized by a late night crime spree in castro valley. it started late thursday night in san leandro. almeda county sheriff's deputies say a teen stabbed a man in the leg and stole his car and took off with three friends. about an hour later the group of

teens stole a black car from a woman after threatening her and her daughter with a knife as well. >> they started saying give us the keys, they got, that they were going to stab me, they had a weapon. >> deputies chased the boys for miles before the driver crashed into a fence near 580. police arrested the driver, but the passengers all got away. we're told the man who was stabbed is expected to be okay. it is 7:08. we have much more ahead on today in the bay, coming up, she flew out of sfo to the east coast and when she landed, all her luggage was there, except the most important thing, her dog. we will tell you the mistake that sent the dog on a different adventure. >> and think portuguese. even on cinco de mayo weekend. we will show you what makes this pop-up store the hottest thing in the south bay.

welcome back. just shy of 7:11 on your saturday morning. the kentucky derby will begin at 11:30 our time, right here on nbc bay area. a live look, gloomy morning, cloudy skies and fog over sfo. and we have a slight cooldown ahead in the temperatures. the cooling trend is under way for the weekend. and we even have the possibility of rain. our meteorologist will be along in four minutes. we all hear of baggage mix-up at the airport but rarely do we hear of a dog mix-up. a woman and her dog left sfo this past week and she made it to north carolina but her dog ended up in philadelphia. today, we have more on how it all happened. >> this all started at the check-in line at sfo. >> i checked my dog. >> speaking to me by video chat, amber dalton says she was headed to raleigh, north carolina, but there was a problem. >> i was pulled out of line at boarding and told that the flight that was going through

chicago was not safe for pets. >> she had checked her 13 pound poodle beast in the cargo hold and too big to fly in her seat and instead of flying to chicago, they would have to fly to dallas, and that's not what happened. beast and the rest of her luggage went to chicago anyway and beast didn't get to raleigh that night. it took gate agents a few hours to track him down. >> they did not know where he was. and then about 10:30 they let me know he had been put on a flight to philadelphia. >> american airlines apologized for the mishap issued a statement in part, a conflict in our customer's routing and policies caused us to keep their pet overnight in philadelphia at a local pet hotel. amber had to leave raleigh and head to roanoke virginia to american airlines flew beast to raleigh and drove him to roanoke where they were finally reunited a day and a half after they left san francisco. >> come here, baby. >> amber says she appreciates that american gave her a free flight voucher and wave her luggage fees.

welcome back. 7:15 on your saturday morning. we're taking a live look over palo alto. gloomy skies there. as we're ahead, experiencing a cooldown on this may the 4th be with you day today. a sighting of a massive shark

off the coast of california shocks swimmers and captivating scientists. the shark was seen near the channel islands in santa barbara county. the enormous and rare species can grow up to 45 feet. that's the size of a bus. this specific shark hasn't been spotted swimming off our coast in three decades. don't worry, though, we're told there is no sort of jaws situation. this humongous creature doesn't even bite. >> these sharks are large bodies, plankton sharks and these guys are eating copopods and krill and other plankton in the water column. >> they're the second largest of the spark species behind whale sharks. we know there is much to be true. there will be lines. but we're told it is well worth. it today, there is a little taste of portugal ahead of tomorrow's cinco de mayo celebration's authentic pastiche

denadia. it is on the dessert menu at the san jose restaurant and they had their first pop-up sale last saturday. >> last week, we sold out within like an hour. i wasn't expecting such a long line, but from 10:30 to like 11:30, there was a huge line all the way down the street. and i panicked because i didn't have enough. >> wow, good problem to have. she has since doubled the recipe for today, good news there, they will be sold in boxes of 6:00 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and adega, is san jose's first restaurant to earn a michelin star. wow. you have a chance to own an iconic bay area house. the full house is up for sale and it's undergone a major renovation. take a look for yourself. looks nothing like it did on the show. because of course, they didn't use the inside. the owner of the home created

the show-ful house. he is now in l.a. the home has four bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms and $5.9 million and if it is sold it will be the highest selling property in the lower pac neighborhood. >> that is a gorgeous home. >> if i had the money, i would buy it but not to live in it. maybe to rent it out. >> all of the people who stop by and look at it and the parking there is just, whoo. >> that's true. >> the crowds would be annoying. >> rent it out as an airbnb, or something. >> vianey is here with the forecast for the first weekend of may. >> a little bit of clouds. but we will be comfortable. and the temperatures will cool off to give us a good day to hang out outside despite the clouds. a good marine layer. there is san francisco. 51 degrees. right now, in san jose. in the 50s. 53 degrees, the wind speed is light. and i want to talk about what we're tracking.

so doppler radar right now, this is kind of what we've been focusing on, it is this upper low, you can see it kind of turning just off the coast, right now, it is about 600 miles from san francisco, and the reason that we're looking at that, is that is going to bring the next chance of possibly seeing some shower activity in the bay area. so right now, it looks like that system is going to kind of make its biggest impact from santa cruz, southward. as far as rain totals go, well, that's still a little bit up for debate, as it inches closer but what you're certainly going to see for today is the cloud cover, and of course, right now, we're seeing some marine layer coverage, in santa rosa, portions of san francisco, down through half moon bay and not as cloudy in santa cruz but look at the microclimate high, we will be just a couple of degrees cooler, but again, very comfortable. 75 degrees in san jose. and still 80s in concord. and warm in through the valleys. oakland at 59. 69. and look at the ten-degree

difference between san francisco and oakland. san francisco will only be topping out at 59 degrees. this is certainly a great way to showcase our microclimate. we go from 50s in san francisco to 69 in oakland and then a little bit further inland and you're at 80 degrees in concord. so depending on what type of weather you're looking for, you can certainly find that today. the hour by hour outlook, i want to turn your attention towards the time line up here. by about 6:30 p.m. tomorrow, again, like i mentioned areas like santa cruz and southward are more likely to see some rain activity. you could get a couple of pockets of showers in through the south bay. but a lot of that rain seems to be focused south of us. as it makes its way inland, overnight sunday, into early monday morning. the rest of the bay area could be seeing rain. this looks a little more dramatic than it really. is we're talking anywhere from a couple of hundreds to just under a tenth of an inch. quick moving. spotty and light. at times, we could see a couple of pockets and then monday, it will move out. making way for a clear tuesday

ahead. so because of that, we will keep the cooler temperatures in through san francisco for sunday and then early morning chance of rain for your commute on monday morning and then things kind of clear out and move out by tuesday. our temperatures begin to warm up into the 60s again. and then we will climb into the upper 70s by wednesday and thursday. so just a couple of showers, but if you live in the south bay, it will be the type of shower ha will get your car a little dirty so you may want to hold off on that. >> and i just have pollen just covering my car right now thank you. it is 7:21. still ahead on today in the bay, a local architect's sudden death pushes his friends and family to take on a project in his memory. we will tell you why they chose to fix up this house, coming up in this morning's edition of bay area proud.

climb to the 60s and 70s. and i want to do a special shout-out today for our comcast cares day, volunteering at local schools throughout the bay area, and this event with the bay area talent, and it is a great day for that. we will see the clouds burn off by 10:00 a.m., and then right around 11:00, we will start to see some sunshine. and this is why i love the slightly cooler temperatures. not too hot. with the yard work. we do this every year. i was out there this year, but this year, i will actually be out at the hola run track at the san jose event. and we are going to have our truck out there, i will be out there handing out free ice cream. completely free. the event is from 8:30 to 12:00 at discovery meadow and the temperatures, a little cloudy, there's never a bad time to eat ice cream, come on out, say hello and a complete look of when we're tracking the showers coming up. >> that's a good reward. run a race and get some ice cream. >> you deserve it. >> and you get to meet vianey. and we will see you again in 15

opt out of providing treatment that they personally oppose. the city attorney general, dennis herera pardon me says the conscience rule allows providers to deny treekt to lgbt patients, women seeking abortions or birth control or anyone seeking assisted suicide. herera as it allows health care workers to apply religious believer ahead of the health care of others. and we have newly surfaced video that appears to show the latest stanford student caught up in a college admissions cheating scandal. her parents are accused of paying more than $6 million to get her into stanford. >> hi, i would like to thank everyone that has helped me, and all of that. and i think that like author, i felt like, you know, you can always achieve the things that you want to, if you try hard.

>> that is the student, and we are told the video was recorded in the summer of 2017 just before she started her freshman year at stanford. it has since been reposted on social media. her mother is accused of paying $6.5 million. the payment is the largest amount yet in the college admission scandal. zhau comes from a family of pharmaceutical billionaires in china. prosecutors say this man, the ring leader, william singer, got her recruited to the stanford sailing team by giving the coaches a fake list of her sailing accomplishments. now, to that toxic scare in san carlos, it took an interesting twist yesterday. tiny amounts of radium and cobalt were found in the backyard of a home on cedar street, right near burton park. state health workers removed the material from the home. officers determined it was not dangerous to nearby homes. it turns out the toxic materials belonged to a scientist who died earlier this year.

he lived in the home for years. worked at the stanford linear accelerator. and all those items were found as his children were cleaning out his home. safety advocates gathered in san francisco last night to demand change and held a vigil where a woman was hit and killed in a cross walk earlier this week. her son tells us the family is devastated. and something has to be done to protect people from cars. >> this is really painful. i don't want anybody to go through this. you can have only one mother. >> the woman was the eighth pedestrian killed in the city this year alone. police did say that the driver who hit the woman did stop and is cooperating with investigators. and inspirational rapper from los angeles had quite an impact in oakland last night. during a tribute for nipsey hussel, the giant mural was

will start to notice a little bit of sunshine, and that will be just enough to warm us up into the 80s, for some interior valleys. so look at this spread of temperatures, we go from 59 degrees in san francisco. warming up by about 10 degrees, going into oakland, with a high of 69, and we warm it up by about 10 more, going into concord, with 80 degrees. the south bay will be topping out in the mid to upper 70s. so this is only going to get cooler as we head into tomorrow. this is setting us up for an even cooler sunday. the reason being, is that we are tracking a bit of an upper low that is churning just off the coast and right now about 600 miles away from san francisco, but i want to show you what is going to happen in the next couple of hours, so today, don't have to worry about any rain, just the cloud cover, but as we look ahead toward sunday, at about 7:00, in addition to that cloud cover, areas especially south of santa cruz, basically the santa cruz mountains, the monterey area, the first to see some heavier showers and pockets in san jose, and overnight as

the system begins to move inland, we begin to see a better chance of rain in through palo alto, half moon bay, and hayward and pleasanton for your monday morning commute. it looks a lot heavier than the amount totals we're seeing on the models. right now it looks like anywhere from a couple hundredths of an inch to a tenth, maybe a few heavier pockets at times. but for the most part, this is a pretty quick-moving system. it kind of clears out and makes its way out by tuesday. things will dry out. but i want to kind of give a special invitation out to everybody. the comcast cares day. which means we have the crews from our station and telemundo helping our schools look beautiful, 64 degrees, topping out in the 70s and i will t wil be handing out free ice cream at discovery meadow. please join me. i will be out there with the folks from the stations and you have a chance to meet us both. and we have showers late sunday

co welcome back. this next story could save you hundreds of dollars on your next international trip. consumer investigator chris kmurz responded to a half moon bay woman whose trip was wrecked when her flight was canceled. chris got her cash, using some little publicized airline lingo that we're eager to share with you this morning. >> here's an announcement you will not hear on the airport pa system. some airlines are required to pay you up to $700 in cash when a flight is late or canceled, because of something called eu-261. it is buried in airline code, and most people have no clue. >> it was amazing. totally amazing. beautiful countries. >> the family european vacation spanned two mesmerizing weeks and one bad night in lond en. we slept on the floor of the airport. >> not by choice. they were flying british airways from croatia to morocco via

london when there was a monster flight delay. seven hour delay. and missed a connecting flight as well as a prepaid tour the next day and wound up paying for the hotel room they couldn't get to. in all, they were out $601. when pam got back home, she asked british airways for reimbursement. >> we waited a couple of weeks. and they responded by saying no, sorry, we don't owe you anything. >> so she called us. we contacted british airways. it offered $200 in vouchers. >> which is better than what i got. which was nothing. >> but we knew british airways owed pam more. $1600 more. you see special rules govern european union airlines like british airways. and american airlines when they're flying back from europe. it is called eu-261. and it says passengers are entitled to up to $700 in cash when flights are delayed or canceled. the amount varies, based on how long a delay lasts, what caused it, and flight distance.

you could get nothing. but using british airways own web site, we figured b. a. owed pam's family of four $458 each. after our inquiry, that's exactly what british airways paid pam $1832. >> our pleasure. >> amazing. you guy disan amazing job. >> we asked british airways why they didn't offer the otts the full compensation from the start. they didn't reply. the otts were unaware of their rights and they are not alone. >> we sent our intern alex to sfo to find out what they know about eu-261. >> no idea. >> no. >> i hadn't heard of it before, no. >> a recent passenger poll found just 8% were aware of their eu-261 compensation rights. the poll was commissioned by air help.com which helps passengers

file claim force a cut. because so few travelers are aware of their rights, air host johnny watt says millions arrive late, incur expenses and leave money on the table. >> every single year airlines are not paying out even close to the amount of people that they should be paying out to. >> airlines inform you of your 261 rights in the small type of your ticket contract so the onus is on you to know the rules and file a claim. if you're just now hearing about this, don't dis pair. you have three years after a flight to speak up. >> you're saying if a delay or cancellation occurred back as far as back as 2016 people can still file. >> absolutely correct. >> fabulous. >> as for pam, she is eyeing the next ott family adventure, determined to forget that night at heathrow, and remember her eu-261 rights. >> it is a good policy. i just didn't know it existed. >> back to those comes that will fight an airline for you, i want you to know they do charge fees.

them. >> fostering is crucial to help us to save more lives. we try to get the little ones especially into foster homes as quickly as possible. less likely to run in problems with diseases and sicknesses when they're in a home as opposed to in the shelter. >> in the shelter where they're susceptible to all of the other animals. >> right. >> and what does fostering these little guys entail? >> well, fostering entails two or three hours feeding, and pets in need provides the formula and the blankets and the medication and the medical checks, every week or so, but they do need lots of tlc from families for the first week. first month or who. >> like having a baby really but not quite as long. two months, they're self sufficient, almost. >> right. >> polka dot and her litter are ready for, to go in for surgery, and they will be ready for adoption in a week or so. >> great. well, if you want to find out more, if you can't foster, you can also donate, pets in
