54 san mateo and mountain view. yesterday it got warmer in the inland areas. we did see good clearing, which is fantastic to see. we have cloudy skies. but some areas will eventually see good clearing. it will be breezy to windy, especially in the evening hours. we're tracking late. by late i really do mean late shower chances overnight into monday morning. our temperatures today are running a few degrees cooler than yesterday. so san jose topping out at 70 degrees. and the fact that it's going to be a little breezy might create a little bit of a windchill out there, especially around the coastline. oakland, 63 degrees. some of our warmer areas, antioch and concord, also warmer. i'll talk about the timing and what we can expect into the workweek in 15 minutes. all right. see new 15, vianey. thanks. we begin with a story we first brought you yesterday morning. an unexpected detour for a bus

full of college students. a college choir from alabama was on their tour bus when it was involved in a deadly cross highway 101 near sfo. the bus did catch fire, destroying the choir's belongings. nobody on the bus was hit. a person in a car was killed. people are stepping in to help. the choir is still scheduled to perform today. ♪ >> reporter: when the oakland college choir performed in san francisco, half of them were wearing regular street clothes because just about everything they brought for their bay area tour burned when their bus caught fire after a freeway crash. >> worse things could happen. god forbid something could have happened to us like the person that hit us.

rest in peace to them. >> reporter: the bus couldn't stop in time and hit one of the damaged vehicles. seconds later, an suv rear-ended the bus. that lincoln navigator burst into flames, the fire spread to the bus. the suv driver, who has not been identified, did not survive. >> our prayers go out for the family. we hope that we will find the family of the deceased. but for us it was a blessing that no one was injured. >> reporter: within hours of people hearing of the crash and fire, an outpouring of support. >> how are you guys reacting to the response of san francisco? >> it's been amazing. it's been amazing the response here and the seventh day add venue activity community. >> reporter: a berkeley doctor and wife bought them suits for their performances. and the san francisco police officers association donated money to help. the college choir is an award-winning group that's performed around the world.

people who live in the area say this is the third time in just the last month they have heard gunfire and seen police activity lately. >> you don't want a family member hurt or a police officer hurt. because they're in here trying to clean up whatever is around. >> the injured officer was taken to the hospital wregs beihere h being treated for serious but nonlife-threatening injuries. >> this is emeryville. look at all the thick black smoke. investigators are trying to figure out what caused this massive fire at the home depot on hollies street. it happened around 7:00 last night. crews shut down the road next to the store. luckily, it didn't spread past the storage area, and no one was hurt. a case of road rage in walnut creek. one man was hit by a car and three others were stabbed. police made three arrests. this happened just after 2:00 yesterday morning. investigators say there was a fight at the intersection of north main street and parkside drive.

they received reports from hospitals in the area that three men were being treated for stab wounds. a fourth man was later taken to the hospital after he had been hit by a car. it looks like everyone involved is going to survive. but the three men you saw now face charges for assault with a deadly weapon. in san jose, a driver was killed after he crashed into a restaurant. police say the driver of this black chevy silverado was headed south on white road around 6:00 yesterday morning. we don't know why, but he made a sharp turn, went over the curb and into the santa fe taqueria. the restaurant was empty and closed at the time. investigators are still looking into what caused the deadly crash. and a vacaville company who got a disturbing racist letter in the mail is receiving an outpouring of support from their community. it told them interracial couples aren't welcome there. but it appears that's not the case. christie smith shows us how the community gathered together to

support the couple. >> i'm mark. nice to meet you. >> reporter: mark yu welcomed people outside his home in vacaville. >> i wasn't expecting any of this. this is an amazing group of people, and the neighborhood is really nice. >> reporter: a post on special suggested a community potluck and barbecue with the family in the wake of an unexpected situation. >> this is nice. this is the vacaville that you know. mark found a disturbing letter sticking out of the mailbox suggesting they find another place to live, that the interracial familiar is not welcome here. they received a complaint about their yard. this mentioned their front lawn but was much worse. >> i find it really upsetting. >> gab rell la didn't know the family but came here with her boyfriend. >> it is crazy to see this in our neighborhood. >> reporter: people brought food, honked and said a kind

word. firefighters stopped by too. >> the family says one upside going through all of this is they have gotten to know more people in the naked than they did before. >> reporter: they now believe the person responsible might not even be a neighbor. genevieve lives in the neighborhood and brought her kids. >> it was important for them to know that a community rallies together when they see something wrong. >> it's gotten to a point where we have connected with the community so much now. >> reporter: christie smith, nbc bay area news 37. now to this tree that fell on two people in alameda county yesterday morning at marina park during a fund-raising walk for homeless families. the 40-foot cottonwood tree fell over and hit two adults. they were taken to the hospital. we're told they are going to be okay. a high-speed chase ended because of the help of good

samaritans. it started 10:30 yesterday morning on 680, danville. the chp was chasing this dodge challenger, which was reported stolen. officers lost track of the car when it got off the freeway at el cerrito and parked on the side of the road. four people ran away from the car into a nearby neighborhood. danville police officers were able to find those four people and take them into custody after witnesses tipped them off. it was like finding a needle in a haystack. that's how the marin county sheriff's department describes the search for a pheue missing . not only did the 67-year-old man get lost, his cell phone wasn't working. rescuers used thermal imaging to hone in on his position and get him out. great news, he is going to be okay. just shy of 7:10. much more ahead on "today in the

have been asking not a straight-up horse race question yet because there's too many candidates and it's not fair yet. but how enthusiastic are you about the candidacy of x, y, or z. for instance, joe biden, while he has the highest number calling him enthusiastic about his candidacy, it is a couple points ahead of five or six other candidates. democrats in general are satisfied with the choices they have and yet to fall in one. that is the best way to describe it. biden has a good start but a long way to go. there is enough to choose from. since we will get new york city jumping in, and michael bennet is the 18th. if you can't find a candidate out of 23 flavors, the ice cream to have, you shouldn't eat ice cream. >> it is similar to the republican field just last election. it was so large. >> that is a signal -- you know why so many jumped in last time?

they thought hillary clinton was so vulnerable. they think trump is vulnerable. >> with president trump able to thwart house democrats by forcing them to take their demands to the courts, might democrats appear just as petty obstructionists? if not, how do democrats make their case given the president's strategy? >> you know, larry, i think this is a trap. it's a political trap for the democrats. and the president has essentially created a wedge on impeachment. he loves talking about it because it unites his party and divides the democrats. and so i do think thwarting the democrats almost pushes him in a corner. and you have this divide. look, nancy pelosi is trying to straddle the divide. she knows they are getting frustrated, the more progressive members who want to impeach now are getting frustrated. the presidential democrats are sitting there going, wait a minute, we talked to our reporters. the last three weeks out of like

30 different questions that candidates had taken from voters, i think only one had to do with impeachment. voters in south carolina, iowa are not talking about this. in a weird way the president's goal is to force the democrats to either take impeachment off the table and clear him or do it and allow him to run against it. >> speaking of the democrats, the activists already suffered from the 2015 fight between clinton and sanders. given a combination of poisoned political environments and so many candidates you have talked about, what are the chances for a brokered party nomination for the first time in decades. >> the way the democrats have written their rules this time, and it's like people like you and i have been talking about a brokered convention because we would like to see one once in our lifetime. i half kid. if they don't have a brokered

first. kentucky derby favorite maximum security crossed the finish line first. after review, the horse was disqualified for interfering with other horses at the end of the final turn. country house, which finished second, was named the winner. at 65-1, country house had the second longest odds of any derby winner. wow. and that was aired right here on nbc. let's check in now with vianey arana with a look at our sunday forecast on cinco de mayo. i failed to mention. >> the weather is a little cloudy. >> it is. >> yesterday we started out the same way. eventually we cleared out. that's kind of what's going to happen today. we will get a period where we notice the sunshine peeking through. walnut creek, a live look. look at the clouds. i really like how that shot looks. it kind of forecasts what's coming up ahead, and that is an upper low hanging out off the coast. it will move in, bringing us a

chance of showers. current temperatures, 51 degrees in morgan hill. 53, san jose. 54 in san mateo. microclimate highs will be cooler. 10 degrees below seasonable, just to kind of give you an idea of the cooling trend under way. 60 in palo alto. yesterday we managed to climb into upper 70s, low 80s. today, not so much. low 60s for san francisco. again, let's talk about the chance of those showers thanks to this upper low that is churning up the coast, moving into central california. and the first to see the rain will mainly be areas in monterey. the possibility of a couple isolated thunderstorms just for monterey county. a little further up, santa cruz will get showers initially. look at the timing of this kind of 12:30, 1:00 a.m. is when we

get to see that move closer inland. for the most part, during the morning, areas of low clouds. we might see drizzle along the coast by afternoon. a little bit cooler. showers still not moving in just yet. into the evening hours and early tomorrow monday morning, 5:00, 6:00 a.m., a chance of seeing showers popping up as this moves in. as far as the rain totals, not a huge storm maker. we are talking a couple hundredths of an inch. one of the annoying storms that sweeps by. you will say, was it raining at some point? that will happen overnight. you will notice a little windy and gusty into the afternoon. coastal clouds will linger. temperatures in the 70s by monday afternoon, the rain moves out. into tuesday, we stay dry. looking ahead into the middle of the week. so wednesday, thursday, we'll begin to see the return of some warmer weather. and also windy to breezy

on someone who breaks the rules. but this man's story shows how breaking one rule can make all the difference. garvin thomas has the touching story in this morning's bay area proud. >> reporter: the story take place in the world of challenger baseball. a game for those with intellectual or physical challenges. it is run by very compassionate people. so i guess it's not too much of a surprise in this case their compassion trumped all. when the challenger division of santa clara's west side little league takes the field, a blind eye may be turned now and again to the rules of baseball. but the love of the game is always on display. it's the same willingness to bend the rules that is at the heart of this story and explains why one little leaguer on the team, javier, is, well, not so

little. >> he is really experiencing joy for, i think, the first time in his 44 years on earth. >> let's go! you can do it! >> reporter: daughter tessa plays on the challenger team and lives in the same milpitas group home as javier. every time terry would come to visit or take her daughter out on the weekends she noticed no one ever doing the same for javier. >> he was abandoned by his parents at age 3. and he's been institutionalized since that time. >> javier himself admits it's been a difficult, lonely journey. >> it was hard. >> reporter: so terry went looking for something javier could do. he liked baseball. and the challenger program is free. so that would work. problem was -- >> anyone under the age of 22 can be involved.

>> how old are you? >> 44. >> reporter: still it took one call to the team managers to throw that rule out. >> while i was on the phone he switched it. it's unlimited age. javier is on the team. >> why not? >> we're like, of course! there's no doubt about it. not even one second. i texted james and said take him on. let's go. but you've got to order him the biggest size shirt. >> do you have a favorite baseball team? >> the giants. >> reporter: javier plays alongside a buddy among the league's other division. his skill getting better with each game he plays. his life getting richer with each passing week. >> i just hit the ball. >> reporter: javier actually turned 44 just a few weeks ago. his new baseball family, well, they threw a big party for him

launchers in order to be ready for any threats or invasions in the future. u.s. analysts are suggesting its real purpose, they believe it's a message to the u.s., as negotiations continue to end the north's nuclear program. you may remember the summit last february with president trump did not end successfully. a follow-up now to a story we first brought you as breaking news friday at 11:00 and yesterday morning. emergency crews are still trying to stop the fuel leaking from this jet in florida. it ran off a run way and into the st. john's river. rough weather forced it to slide off the run way and right into the water. 136 passengers and 7 crew members were on board. 21 were rushed to the hospital. miraculously, all are going to be okay. crews have placed equipment in the water to keep the fuel from moving downstream. back here in california, a

stretch of road in los angeles that used to be known as rodeo road has a new name. obama boulevard. the three and a half mile street was renamed after the former president yesterday. it intersects with martin luther king boulevard which is where a festival took place yesterday. they hope it will revitalize baldwin hills, crenshaw neighborhood. an annual tradition at nbc bay area, comcast cares today. organized by our parent company comcast. in the south bay, hundreds of volunteers pitched in to help clean up a school. here's "today in the bay"'s tom jenson. >> reporter: 500 volunteers got their marching orders. >> let's hear it from the principal! >> reporter: and spread out across the middle school campus knocking out a long list of chores. >> keep the library clean. >> reporter: making the school grounds a little nicer for 700

plus students and their teachers. >> every year i end up doing the job for tall people. >> reporter: super sprucing up the garden to painting basketball courts and weeding, telemundo and the rest of the comcast family worked together with their personal families, friends, and neighbors to give back to the community. >> one of our employees brought a whole basketball team. teachers are here. their students and their families are also here. so we're going to make a nice impact on this school today. >> a lot of kids helping the school. that's what really warms the heart. >> reporter: it warms the hearts of educators who say the lessons learned about community today will live on for generations. >> so when they come and they volunteer alongside all in their community they learn the same thing of being able to go and move on and help other people in their community. >> reporter: last year 29,000 kids volunteered across the nation. and more than a million have contributed their time in the annual events the past 18 years.

and every year community leaders say more and more people pay it forward. >> the principal of the school, the comcast helped last year, is here because she wants to volunteer as well. >> reporter: tom jenson, nbc bay area news. >> and another boost from our colleagues. chris chmura joined volunteers in paradise, a community still dealing with the aftermath of the devastating campfire. at paradise high, volunteers showed up with rakes and shovels. comcast fathered all 200 graduating seniors and gave them all laptops. chris was there to get their reaction. >> there is a kpao uttcomputer box. i'm planning on going to college. it will be important to do school work and things like that. >> did you have any idea that's what you were going to get?

in the state )s top office for just four months... welcome back. governor gavin newsom has been in the state's top office just four months. and it hasn't taken him long to make his mark. many thought new some was voiceless while serving as lieutenant governor under governor jerry brown. but as california's 40th governor, he's quickly making up for the lost years. nbc bay area political analyst larry gerson rejoins us. what do you think were some of the early moves that governor newsom made to get into this place. >> biggies really. three major policies for sure come to mind. one moving water north to south. decades, really decades. former governor brown touted shifting melted snows to southern california and the valley. the peripheral canal, if you remember that way back, and more recently through tunnels. in either case the water would

have circumvented. it would bring relief to environmentalists. another area, another major shift that came with the high-speed rail program connecting southern and northern california. once priced at $39 billion, the price has soared to over $80 billion for a shorter system. newsom will limit the route. he hasn't ruled out completing the project but will do so only if there are funds. he dealt with capital punishment saying it is prohibitively costly and erroneous. he declared a moratorium on executions as long as he is governor. voters have twice rejected ending capital punishment. but a new recent public opinion poll, kira, has 62% of californians agreeing with the governor.

>> which is surprising following those votes. >> change. >> those are three hefty policy areas, contentious really. how has the governor been able to act this way without serious pushback. >> you know, say what you want about the new governor. if nothing else, he is a shrewd observer of changing public opinion. just capital punishment as an example. no state pays attention to environmental concerns as much as california. especially when concerning water. stopping the flow of water from north to south fits in with the environmental movement. environmentists are part of the newsom coalition. high-speed rail, endless lawsuits, and claims of mismanagement made this an easy target for cutting waste. support through the transportation system was never strong to begin with, which allowed newsom to modify the course. for years the federal courts questioned the use of the death

penalty for some groups than others. this may be one step toward equal treatment regardless of race and socioeconomic background. one more important fact, having overwhelmingly democratic legislature assured the governor of little resistance from the state's other major power center. >> wow. does it strike you as odd that the governor would reverse course on key elements that were made under governor jerry brown, who he served? >> it's quite unusual. you're absolutely right. there are a couple of things to keep in mind here. newsom has often been ahead on major social issues. remember, as san francisco mayor, newsom initialed marriage licenses long before same-sex marriage was legal. and he was outspoken on recreational marijuana, long before most policymakers spoke

out. brown was much more cautious on these. this is opening the pathway for newsom. >> was ahead of the trend on those two things. what difficult issues lie ahead for the governor? >> with 40 million people and an economy equal to the fifth largest nation in the world, california has endless issues. but housing and homelessness are two issues connected as one. the state faces a crisis in inadequate and affordable housing. and housing is without a home. tax is another one. there is a growing movement to separate tax formulas of homes and businesses. and initiatives in the works here on taxation. newsom may decide to lead. finally, back to water. more than anything else, and more than ever, and particularly with climate change, water is perhaps the state's most pressing issue. newsom has been discussing a

water tax to discourage excessive use while helping out those without access to water. you know, these issues, kira, are just tugging at california's political fabric. newsom has a choice. be proactive or reactive. judging by his performance today, expect to hear from him on these issues in the near future. now, whether he has the right chemistry to continue on these remains to be seen. but he is off to an impressive start. >> it seems he has good luck so far. we will see what continues to happen. thanks for joining us. love your insight. back with the last look at weather with vianey next. next w

good sunday morning. it is 7:54. and this is a beautiful view of the golden gate bridge. we have a nice shot through there. it is a little cloudy. it is going to be a little cooler today. if you had plans to be outside, definitely plan for a sweater this afternoon. our daytime highs will be running 5, 10 degrees below seasonable. there's the shark tank. sharks took home the win. 53 in san jose. cloudy for the most part throughout. the reason is, well, we have doppler radar up. we are tracking an upper low that is inching towards the central coast of california. you can see it churning off the coast there. now, as we track this system, we are tracking the chance of showers as well. but we're not expecting this to really impact your sunday. the only thing you're probably going to be noticing as you head

out this afternoon is cooler temperatures, a combination of breezy winds and also cloud cover. you don't have to worry about the rain until late tonight. so your daytime highs 63. palo alto, 68. santa cruz, 64. areas just south of the santa cruz mountains, really the central coast. monterey, will be the first to see the rain. a chance of possible thunderstorms in the monterey area. if you have plans to drive down there, keep that in mind. the timeline up here, look how late this rain moves in. areas of low clouds. afternoon will be cooler. and those showers don't move in until late tonight as the system begins to move inland with a couple of showers popping up. so as you head into your monday morning commute, you might get a chance of seeing some rain very early on. into the afternoon on monday, though, the rain clears out.

the system moves out. a couple of clouds left behind. as far as rain totals, as i said, very quick. not a strong system. a couple hundredths of an inch. just under a tenth of an inch in most areas. long-range outlook, keep the coastal low clouds and 70s inland in through really monday. once the showers move on out of the area, we get a chance to see warmer temperatures make their return. and also dry conditions, which will mean clearing skies. looking ahead to next weekend, a timeline through there, we're talking the possibility of a possible additional storm. models are showing it mostly south. for the next seven days, here's a look at what you can expect. late showers will move in late tonight, early monday morning. temperatures remain cool, in the 60s. it isn't until tuesday into wednesday that we will begin to see warmer temperatures. we're talking mid-60s for san francisco. and we'll get the return of mid-70s for inland areas.
