gala delivers more jaw-dropping fashion from e >> good morning. i'm francesera. >> and i'm phillip mena. we're following yet another wave of severe weathertening millions of americans. as the new storm systems grow, the national weather service confirms that lincoln, nebraska, was recently hit by an e f-2 tornado that brought winds up to 120 miles per hour. ire utah jazz like this where people are still cleaning up debris now bracing for more possible damage. >> let's get right to nbc's meteorologist bill karins tracking it for us. good morning, bill. >> good morning. it may be two, three, maybe four days of severe storms. today in western portions of texas, rural sections, hopefully the tornadoes that here. tomorrow we have 33 million midland, area. people at risk and this even of missouri aded during the da. including kansas city. again, we could be watching a two-day severe weather outbreak with tornadoes and the possibility of life-threatening flash flooding on top of that.

so a very dangerous day in the southern plains and they've been hit all too often the last few weeks. >> they sure have. keep an eye out for us. thank you, bill. amid rising tensions between the u.s. and iran, the u.s. military is deploying an aircraft carrier strike group and air force bombers near iranian shores. uss lincoln battle carrier is on the way to the middle east. us intelligence officials say iran or proxy forces are planning to attack american troops in the region. the nature of such an attack is unclear, according to u.s. officials and the defense official. here is nbc's richard engel with more. >> reporter: in a dramatic show of force, the uss abraham lincoln aircraft carrier and its iran's shores. administration officials say it's defensive that u.s. intelligence says iran or its proxy forces are planning to attack u.s. troops in the gi are an unmistakable sign of what will

happen if they do. >> we have continued to see activity that leads us to believe that there is escalation that may be taking place, and so we're taking all the appropriate actions. >> reporter: u.s. officials tell nbc news the threats targeted multiple locations and that the aircraft carrier's deployment was preplanned, but moved up. but in iran, officials are trying not to take what they see as america's bait. in february, iran's foreign minister told me the trump administration is looking for war. >> same people who created the war with iraq. we have the same gang in the white house. >> reporter: national security advisor john bolton said the u.s. is not seeking war with iran. but he has repeatedly called for regime change there. president trump's close allies, saudi arabia's crown prince and israel's benjamin netanyahu have also both called for a hard line >> that w richard engel reporting. >> president trump has granted a full pardon to a former u.s.

soldier who was convicted in 2009 of killing an iraqi prisoner. during his trial michael acknowledged that instead of transporting the prisoner as ordered, he questioned the man at gunpoint. and says he shot him out of self-defense. he was sentenced to 25 years in prison which was reduced to 15 years. he was paroled in 2014. the white house says 27 generals and admirals signed a brief in support of the self-defense claim. he thanked the president for his tremendous act of mercy. >> the fight rages on between the trump administration and house democrats. a court battle is likely on the way as the treasury department formally denies the request for president trump's tax returns. and the judiciary committee is gearing up to hold the vote -- to hold the attorney general in contempt of congress over access to the full mueller report. tracie potts is following all of this for us in d.c. tracie, good morning. what can we expect next as the show downs start to heat up? >> reporter: well, we could expect this to land in court because now the committee, the

democrats here have to figure out where do they go next with the administration saying flat out no to getting their hands on president trump's tax returns. that letter back to the ways and means committee, the treasury secretary steve mnuchin said that it is an unprecedented request raising serious questions about whether or not this is constitutional. now, moving on, we are also taking a look at what's happening here on wednesday. the judiciary committee is holding a vote on whether to hold william barr, the attorney general, i of congress for not issuing that full mueller report under subpoena. barr also did not come and y, but the contempt vote that's happening on wednesday is for not issuing that report. the justice department says they can't find any legitimate purpose for issuing that report, and we are also hearing from president trump who now says he

does not want robert mueller to testify. >> we have quite a clash set up here between the executive and legislative branches. all right, tracie, thank you. >> meantime president trump's former attorney is waking up for the first time in federal prison. michael cohen is behind bars, starting his three-year sentence for, among other things, charges brought by the special counsel. and now there is uncertainty about whether congress will be able to hear directly fmrt muel. nbc'te>> reporter: michael cohe apartment building for the ride to prison after one last dig at the man he once loyally served. >> i hope that when he rejoin my family and friends, that the country will be in a place without xenophobia, injustice, and lies at the helm of our country. >> reporter: he got a three-year sentence at a minimum security prison in new york for financial crimes and lying to congress. cohen was hoping prosecutors would shave time off the sentence in return for his offer

taxpayers hundreds of dollars, claims two lawsuits filed by the state of california. >> we allege that they have steered these low-income taxpayers into paying for services they should have gotten for free. >> reporter: that service is called free file, a joint effort by the irs and major tax preparers to offer free services for filers with adjusted gross incomes under $66,000. 100 million people are eligible, but only 2.6 million used it last year. a propublica investigation claimed some tax services, including turbo tax, purposely hide free file from users. did you find that turbo tax purposely hid a link to free file? >> we found that turbo tax put code on the free file website that made it so google and other search engines would never show that website. >> reporter: after his story last month, elliott says turbo tax changed the code. the california suits layout another tactic. >> these websites don't contain any direct links to their truly
