and nuns mandatory reports. but it does not require them to go to local police unless local law requires that. so the pope decree covers any sexual abuse of a minor, sexual misconduct with an adult, possession of child pornography and ever a coverup by pope leadership. the pope is detailing how any following investigations should go. additionally priests and nuns must report to police where required. every diocese is required to come one a confidential reporting system and there are also whistleblower protections for anyone reporting abuse. because this does center on making sure that any church leadership helps to account. they have a deadline june, a year from now. >> that requires them to have that reporting system in place. in san jose, kris sanchez.

"today in the bay" tracie potts is live with more on those questions he could face. tracie. >> reporter: hi, marcus. good morning. first of all, it's significant this is coming from the president's own party, not from democrats who sent a number of subpoenas on their own. also significant, they're not asking to subpoena, they're asking him to come in and testify. rallying in florida overnight, president trump tells supporters democrats just won't let go of the russia investigation. >> the democrats are saying, we want more! >> reporter: now it's republicans putting his son in the hot seat. a source tells nbc, the senate judiciary committee run by republicans has suspended donald trump, jr. to testify. our source says lawmakers want to ask trump, jr. why he told

congress that he knew little about the effort to build the trump tower in moscow. lawyer michael cohen said he briefed the president's son ten times. we are told they also want to ask if the president knew about his son's meeting with the russian lawyer. trump, jr. says no the mueller report says yes. >> every single day the president is making a case, he's becoming self impeachable. >> reporter: president trump claimed executive privilege to keep democrats from seeing blacked-out portions of the report and the evidence behind it. lawmakers voted to hold attorney general william barr in contempt for fought providing the full report. >> we did not relish doing this, but we have no choice. >> what a cynical mean spirited counterproductive irresponsible staff it is. >> reporter: that contempt charge faces one more final vote. tracie potts, nbc news, walk.

a developing story that u.s. officials and world leaders are closely watching. north korea this morning launched at least two suspected short range missiles. they appear to have been launched from the military base not from the demilitarized zone. south korea military along with the u.s. military are conducting an analysis. today's launch is the third time the country conducted missile tests since talks collapsed between president trump and kim in february. well, in contra costa county, some parents are deciding to keep their kids, high school students away today. >> nbc news' bob riddell is live in san money, parents and students that show up today, bob, they'll notice more police presence? >> reporter: right, lawyer remarks marcus. the principal here at california high school says there will be considerable police presence on and around the presence at san ro money. he noted there are 47 under surveillance cameras and additional and min strarts to

support students and staff. this is the third time we know someone threatened violence. the most reported yesterday. they reported to graffiti in the fine arts building, tomorrow, library shot up first. then courtyard, then myself, then also a racist comment directed at african-americans according to school. last week students ground u found graffiti in another restroom, cal will be shot up 5/9, final warning. the police response, they commended the students for coming forward with the enno. and went on to write, despite this presence, some families will choose to keep their children home from school tomorrow. we fully support the decision that you make as a family. we understand. we'll work with teachers to ensure an absence tomorrow does not impact students. this letter referring to today. i mentioned this is the third time a threat has been made against cal high. you may recall last year around this time, police arrested a

at 10:30 this morning. 5:07. fire code under fire at the ghostship trial. prosecutors continue to layout the case. yesterday one long time fire code inspector testified, giving jurors a crash course in oakland's fire code. he talked about how the warehouse did not meet critical requirements. the defence argued those responsibilities actually fell on warehouse owners, not the defendants. testimony is expected to resume this morning. happening today, san francisco tax drivers plan to protest outside of uber headquarters on market street. they say they're upset about the ride share's business model. this comes after a day after they rallied outside different officers. drivers in at least ten u.s. cities took part, including san francisco. the main beef here. not enough pay, according to the economic policy institute, ride

share drivers make less than $12 an hour on average. ride sharing was once sold as a way to lower traffic congestion. yet, another study coming to the same conclusion others have reached before. in this calls, researchers found uber and lyft are the cause between two-thirds of traffic increased over six years. it finds drive share cars are clogging roads and pulling people from mass transit. new this morning, a hefty fee for uprooting a protected oak tree that later died. the judge ordered the land own tore foot the nearly $6,000 bill after they sued them for digging at the degree without permits. they uprooted it to be dragged to a ranch where they built a new home. the tree died in the process. the couple is appealing. according to general rule of thumb, home buyers should put down 20% of their purchase price for that home, but in the bay

area, that can be impossible for a lot of people. plus, there are programs to assist first time home buyers. santa clara home buyers can get a 30-year home loan when the home is resold, refinanced or reaches maturity. the home buyers program was made possible through the affordable housing bond passed by voters in 2016. >> a lot of people are under the impression they have to put 20% down themselves. and they actually can get in with 3% or 5% and apply for our down payment assistance program so they can have the full 20%. >> the empowered home buyers of santa clara fund provides assistance up to 17% of the purchase price and is available to home buyers withing in 120% of median income. well, a big night for bay area sports fans with two big wins, one which may have come at a cost. >> let's hold that thought for just one second.

uber prices its shares tonight. so when you wake up tomorrow morning, these numbers will be for real. i will talk more about that in a second. los gatos showing strong financials. talking about how well this company is doing. it's really the little company that could. so watch this stock today. one of the founders of facebook is calling for the company to be broken up. chris hughes wrote an op-ed for this morning's "new york times" in which he says, among other things, i feel a sense of anger and responsibility. the government must hold mark zuckerberg accountable and it's time to break up facebook. hughes is going to be on the "today" show coming up at 7:00 to talk about his demand. uber will price its shares, sell it's stock to selected investors tonight. that's the ipo. the market debut is tomorrow. so the big question tonight is what price does uber ask for its

shares? you know uber executives are thinking about companies that went public recently. lyft disappointed investors. its share price right now is under the ipo price. you don't want that, lyft price too high. zoom rocketed upwards trading 80%. huge pop. they arguably priced too low. remember a company that goes public makes money off the stock one time, that's it. . if your stock rockets on the first day, you know you could have gotten more money for it. but you want to move a little to the positive, let's say 10%. after all, that's why serve buying from you, so it's a real goldilocks situation for uber tonight. last night in a rally in florida, president trump accused the chinese of breaking the deal, that was his words, now, if there is no deal today or at least a strong progress towards a deal, the u.s. is going to increase tariffs on chinese

we'll see upper 60s at noon today with mostly sunny skies, in hayward, it's going to be in the mid-50s. so we're pretty uniform with our temperatures starting out today, late morning in hayward, we'll be in the low 60s, in the mid-60s as you go back to pick them up from school. it will be another comfortable day with highs in the low- to mid-70s, which is normal for early may. so we're still on target with our temperatures and it will also be comfortable in the east bay with a high of 76 degrees at antioch and oakland today, 67. 60 today in bailey city. north bay at 68. santa rosa 79 in yukiah. i'm watching this disturbance in the vegas area. >> that could fire up a few thunderstorms over the sierras. some of that energy could move into the bay area overnight and start us out with spotty light

sprinkles. we're not seeing much, watching out for a very slight chance. then we will see our temperatures warming up over the weekend, reaching the upper 70s in england. still looks great in our 7-day forecast. no major issues for mother's day. mike, you see a few spots starting to slow down. >> starting to slow down, no major surprise. a smooth drive through the south bay, peninsula easy, light traffic flow. we start to see a little deal right here for highway 84, making that cut from 580 to 680 through pleasanton, livermore. a drive through contra costa county. the metering lights should be turning on any second. last check, i had a couple cash lanes that needed to be opened. we have it down towards the robin williams panel. equipment is moving. i didn't see a lot of traffic. it is starting to flow across cross the golden bay bridge.

four homes under construction going up in flames overnight. this is in hayward. these are posted on twitter by people in the area at the time. this is near olympic and huntwood avenues. you can actually see those flames there. we just spoke with haywood fire department, someone there, they told us six completed homes were threatened because of the fire. some of them were damaged. no injuries are reported. so far, fire investigators aren't calling this suspicious. we will get you that information as soon as bob riddell gets there. on adesert, wildfire season is back. last year was the state's deadliest history. 88 people killed. two years ago, the bay was hit especially hard. thousands of homes were destroyed. "today in the bay" this morning is getting an exclusive look at what fire officials are doing now. we get more from pete in

petaluma with the work already done. good morning. >> reporter: the officials minimize the damage within it comes to wildfires. of course, there is not much you can do. they want to minimize the damage what we dealt with in the past. i did get a chance to ride along with a fire inspector who gave you an idea of what they're doing. you can see in this car here, we are driving around the finch mountain area. officials showed us areas where owners need to create what's called defensible space in the event of a wildfire. when we talk about defensible space, we talk about clearing out any debris, 30 feet around the home, pine needles, dry leaves, in some cases trees. owners who need more defensible space will be given notice via next door or by mail to comply. they could face penalties an liens on their properties if they don't supply. i did get a chance to speak

about the importance of these inspections being done and a county fire official who gave us more context as to why this defensible spa is is needed. >> i think it's great. it's comforting a know that they're managing as well as people on top of it. it's a really confident feeling for sure. >> so we want to do our best to keep fires on the ground which gives firefighters an opportunity to exthing wish the fire. it gives you an opportunity to protect your home. >> reporter: and there is no doubt about it, guys, if those north bay wildfires of 2017 are still having an impact throughout sonoma county. those fires ripping through santa rosa and parts of wine country, destroying nearly 8,000 structures, burning hundreds of thousands of acres, resulting in 44 deaths. i want to point out it is wildfire awareness week if california. there will be an event in

nevada. >> that event is scheduled as to start at 2:30 p.m. we are live here in petaluma. pete suratos for "today in the bay". 5:44. we are learning new information about the two students accused of committing a deadly shooting outside of denver. 18-year-old devon ericsson and an unidentified juvenile suspect made their first court appearance yesterday. one student died in the shooting. eight others were jumped. they used to car pool together. one former student is speaking out saying he and his brother left because of them. >> we were friends, we found out what was happening and who it was. we weren't surprised. you could kind of see that coming from a mile away. >> investigators are looking into the possibility one was shot by the school's private security guard. both suspects are due back tomorrow. security concerns as well. we're developing a story,

watching a developing story in san money, where some students may be keeping their kids from class at california high school. police officers stationed there after the discovery of at least two recent graffiti messages threatening an attack. school officials are working with police to track down whoever is behind the bogus threatening messages. new this morning, a new strike threat issued by teachers at another east bay school district. city teachers vowing to hit the picket lines after negotiations stalled if march. mediation couldn't bring the sides any closer together. teachers are asking for higher pay, fighting a proposal to increase class sizes. the district says it's already facing a $5 million budget shortfall. >> new for you this morning, officers making an arrest on sonoma university. they accused the suspect of committing sexual assault. in december at a student's housing village. new for you this morning, police in the north bay are

searching for a bank robber. take a look at this screen. they say the man robbed a petaluma banc of america yesterday. no one was hurt. we don't know how much money was stolen. anyone with information is asked to call police. homelessness is a growing problem aceos the bay area. today several power players are coming together in san jose to try to address the issue. in total, there are nearly 30,000 homeless people across the bay area. the bay area economic institute says it could cost nearly $13 billion to permanently house them all. the panel includes a forum to brain storm solutions. it starts at 6:00 p.m. downtown. san francisco streets got a little more crowded when it comes to the tourist crowd. these three wheeled vehicles made their debut yesterday, colorful. they're for visitors hoping to see some of the city's major

as we go into the evenings. get there early before the ice cream runs out. on saturday, the coast will reach up to 64 degrees. the bay, the high temperatures 67 and 75 inland on saturday afternoon. and then on sunday, as you make plans for mother's day, we have more beautiful weather with sunshine all across the bay area. here's an event you might want to check out, the wag dog festival in sausalito. and we will have a cool day there. but at least it will be sunny and great for all the pets out there at the park. that starts at 10:00 on saturday morning, it goes until 3:00 in the afternoon. if you go to yosemite this weekend, heads up, there will be some storms developing each and every day from saturday into sunday, possibly monday, so if you are planning to go there, just plan around some of those storms and make sure you are aware of the weather. then for the tri-valley, some of the vineyards having mother's day events, great all weekend long. we will talk about today with
