this is "today" with savannah guthrie and hoda kotb live from studio 1a, rockefeller plaza. good morning, everyone. archie, the name of the royal baby. >> just archie, not short for archibald. >> could be. let's get right to our breaking news and for the second time in less than a week north korea conducted new missile launches, the breaking news happening just overnight today. keir simmons has the very latest on this morning. >> reporter: south korea's defense ministry this morning now believes two rounds of suspected short range missiles were fired, one at around 3:29 a.m. eastern the second 20 minutes later each traveling 260 miles and 170 miles respectively. this morning south korea and u.s. working on more details and analyzing what it means.

korea testing that optimism, vowing not to buckle under international sanctions even if its people has to survive only on water and air. >> we all know how the summit talks broke down between north korea and the u.s. what kind of pressure does this put on u.s. negotiators? >> reporter: north korea is trying to put pressure on the u.s. and president trump. this is close to a test an intercontinental ballistic missile back in 2017. it doesn't violate that pledge that kim jong-un has made not to test a long range missile. it's a provocation one that will worry america's allies in the region like japan and south korea and time to coincide a visit by special representative for north korea. some analysts suggesting perhaps the use of short range missiles indicates kim jong-un hasn't given up on negotiations, at least for now. >> the breaking news overseas this morning. keir simmons, thank you.

>> we're following several major developments in the showdown over the mueller report. after voting to hold attorney general william barr in contempt of congress, a key house democrat is now saying the country is in a constitutional crisis. new subpoenas are being issued including one for the president's own son. as for the president himself he weighed in at a late night rally in florida. we have in depth team coverage this morning and we start with kristen welker at the white house. good morning to you. >> reporter: craig, good morning to you. this is a remarkable development. it's the first congressional subpoena that we know of for one of president trump's children. the move is pitting a republican committee chair against the president's eldest son donald trump jr. and it comes as tension between the president and congress are heating up. this morning donald trump jr. is under fire after the republican led senate intelligence committee issued a subpoena to the president's oldest son demanding he return to congress to answer questions about his

previous claims he had limited knowledge of a plan to build a trump tower in moscow during the 2016 campaign then candidate trump insisted he had no dealings in russia. donald trump jr. testified in 2017 he was only peripherally aware of the plans in moscow. but michael cohen said he briefed trump jr. on the project about ten times. the president not men shopping his son last night while rallying supporters in battleground florida. instead blasting congressional democrats. >> it was going to be like we want the mueller report. now they say murl? -- mueller report? no we want to start all over again. >> as democrats and the white house are involved in an escalating standoff with the house judiciary chairman delivering this blunt assessment. >> we're now in a constitutional

crisis. >> reporter: the judiciary committee voting to hold attorney general william barr in contempt of congress for refusing to turn over the full mueller report. >> we are in danger. we need to respond. >> reporter: some democrats invoke impeachment. >> how can we impeach without getting the documents? >> reporter: but the white house is blocking the release of the full mueller report by asserting executive privilege with republicans arguing democrats are playing politics. >> let's stop this political theater. week after week after week we're just having this theater. >> reporter: as for donald trump jr. a source close to him tells nbc news he continues to cooperate by producing documents and is willing to answer written questions but quote no lawyer would allow their client to participate in a pr stunt. on the attorney general if the

full house votes to find him in contempt it would largely be bring in nbc's justice correspondent pete williams. pete, let's pick it up where kristen left off. so the next step for house democrats would be to have a full house vote on this contempt motion against the attorney general, but then what? >> reporter: he'll go right on being attorney general. the house will sue him, ask a judge to order him to turn over what he wants and not so easy. congress and the public already have nearly all the mueller report. some redacted dealing with open investigations and for nearly a century the justice department refused to hand that kind of material over. some of it was blacked out because it's grand jury material. the justice department says it's against the law to reveal that, that the government couldn't reveal it even if it wanted to so the committee will probably end up with some of what it wants, though not everything. and this is going to take months, possibly years. the house-bound attorney general

eric holder in contempt in 2012 and just last night the house told a federal judge it had finally settled that with the justice department. >> so, pete, the house judiciary committee, they make the vote yesterday. full house does finally hold him in contempt. as kristen said a few moments ago, largely symbolic? >> reporter: yes, absolutely. largely symbolic because he'll still be attorney general. now, don jr. is in a different category. he's a private citizen. if he refuses to testify and can't make the subpoena go away, he could be held in criminal contempt but may not be very likely because it would take a vote of the full republican-controlled senate. by the way, the administration can't assert executive privilege over anything that happened in the campaign. that's a protection that applies to presidents, not to candidates for president. >> all right. pete, thank you very much. appreciate it. now to the deadly school shooting near denver, colorado. new details emerging this morning about the remarkable acts of heroism that saved lives, and the two student suspects under arrest. we have two reports for you and

he and his older brother left the school because of erickson. >> i was a friend found out what was happening and who it was, we weren't surprised who it was. you could kind of see that coming from a mile away. >> reporter: law enforcement response to the shooting, swift and massive. authorities arriving in under two minutes. the school's private security guard catching one suspect in a hallway, officials say. police finding the second alone in an empty classroom after students had fled. no shots were fired between suspects and police. >> attention, please. lockdown. >> they found him. >> reporter: everyone knew exactly what to do and they all went into action within five minutes. where they were able to find the second suspect and arrest that person. >> reporter: authorities offered few clues about the relationship between erickson and the under-aged suspect indicated as a female by the court but identifies as male according to his attorney. >> i don't know how long they have known each other, but they were friends enough to carpool. >> reporter: last night an

emotional vigil for a wounded community. some grieving students expressing anger, frustration and sadness but also honoring the bravery of kendrick castillo. >> we want to say we love you, kendrick. we will remember you forever. and always. >> reporter: according to nbc denver affiliate kusa, siting multiple law enforcement sources, investigators are looking into the possibility that one of the injured students was actually shot by the school's private security guard. they'll have to conduct some tests to confirm that. craig, savannah? >> ron mott in highlands ranch, ron, thank you. we want to talk about the young heroes who rushed one of the shooters and prevented an even larger tragedy. this morning we're hearing from the parents of the 18-year-old who sacrificed his life to save his classmates. nbc gadi schwartz talked with them. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. four heroes acting so quickly and saving so many lives. we spoke with the father of kendrick castillo, the student

who paid the ultimate sacrifice by his heroism. his father says his son was a natural protector. kendrick's friends say he was the best of us. john castillo says he's not surprised his only son, 18-year-old kendrick gave up his life to protect others. >> i was approached by a girl last night. she told me, mr. castillo, your son saved my life. she said, he jumped and ran and did what he had to do. >> reporter: kendrick didn't act alone. his friend brendan says he and two other students including joshua jones who suffered two gunshot wounds followed kendrick's lead giving others the chance to escape. >> in my brain, absolute fear. but my -- kendrick went up, i went up and went to it. >> he knew that time was a factor. he knew if he didn't do something right then there wouldn't be an opportunity. >> reporter: this girl was in that classroom. >> saw that gun and i think they just went for it thinking that that's what he had to do. >> reporter: over the last

decade of school shootings and lockdowns we've taught a generation how to run, hide, create barricades. no one asking teens to put themselves in harm's way, more and more those are saying, we've had enough. >> why in the world would i let this coward get what he wants? why? i'm not a victim. i refuse to be a victim. kendrick refused to be a victim. >> reporter: in north carolina last week another act of heroism, 21-year-old riley howell killed while taking down a gunman who shot five other students. one of whom also died. >> and it didn't matter what happened to him as long as others got out in one piece. >> reporter: for the parents of survivors and heroes overwhelming emotions. >> thank god for the heroes in her classroom. this would have been -- awful. a whole lot worse. >> what i want from you guys, to do your best editing, do your best work and show the world who my son was and what we lost.

that's all i care about. >> gadi, those parents are brave for just talking about this, and in the midst of their terrible grief. i know you've been in the community a lot this last few hours. what are people saying? >> reporter: yeah. savannah, such a strategy. one way that people are working through their grief out here, in particular, students who go to this school, those saying those who saved their lives. they want to remember the little things. he was so helpful when it came to tutors others in class. the fact that he was the first person to give someone a jump start in the parking lot. his love of robotics. they say they want his name to be the one remembered here. they don't want to be focussing on the shooters or their motivation and they set up a memorial in kendrick's honor. back to you guys. >> gadi, thank you very much. police have removed more than 1,000 guns from a home in an upscale los angeles neighborhood. officers there say they found several rooms cluttered with

get to your news at 8:00. north korea, the country conducting another round of missile testing overnight and the move could have an impact on the fragile nuclear talks with the u.s. today's sen year yor international correspondent keir simmons is on the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. two suspected short range missiles fired overnight within 20 minutes of each other but going no further than 260 miles. it's clearly kim jong-un sending a message to president trump deepening fears that he is turning away from diplomacy, the second time in less than a week that north korea has tested missiles like this. the first test saturday watched by kim himself. north korea insisting this test was a regular defensive drill, and this is not the kind of intercontinental ballistic missile that worried the world back in 2017, but south korea says it is very concerned after that summit between president trump and kim jong-un failed to reach agreement. secretary of state pompeo said in recent days the u.s. is still

mika, i love where you write a book, telling us just what to do. why did you want to focus on 20-somethings? >> data say they start in their 20s, young women and never catch up. conflicting messages how they're supposed to be starting out. scrappy, working really hard, eager, ambitious but also get the right pay. very hard to nail. >> it tricky especially starting out. what's your leverage? can't go in, pound the table and say i d.emand this and that. daniella's story was so empowering, why i teamed up with her. we were talking. talked two hours. she's a dreamer. she grew up in lima, ohio, with four siblings not a lot of money at all and not a lot of security about what her status would lead her and she had goals and wanted to be here in america and make

it. she started applying for jobs all over new york city. she was working full time, and lied on all the resumes says she lived in new york city. worried where she lived would deter them from hiring her. >> i love this story. daniella, bring you in. you told employers i'm local. i can make it. you weren't. got a call back what did you do? >> p. diddy's label environment, saw i was local, can you come in tomorrow. of course i can. didn't know how to get there. couldn't get on a plane or drive so i went to the greyhound bus website got on an 18-hour bus through the night. nine stops. cleaned up in port authority. >> that's right there. that's enough right there. >> right there shows you have to have -- all of those qualities you need, you showed right then and there. that moxie, determination, ingenuity, resourcefulness. what's your advice to women starting out as you are? you've written a book now with

mika brzezinski. pretty good stuff for your resume, but what advice do you have? >> say "yes" to opportunities and don't think about having the perfect job ow how it's all going to end right away. struggling getting your foot in the door, take it one step at a time. work hard and try to find a way to find a "yes" to all the "nos "you're getting. >> yes to that job. no pay. four our jobs that finally got her to nbc. started all over again and how we ended up together deciding to write this book. >> i was going to say. mika, you have a good eye for talent and gave all the book money to daniella, just starting out, wonderful, and makes sense. completely you. we're in this setting, i'm like, we're here. i'm supposed to be the interviewer. >> ready for our jobs. >> you both have great tips, but for nailing a job interview, daniella, what are tips you have? >> when it comes to dressing the part, you want to do research. is it a job you're applying to, sort of more creative, more buttoned up and corporate? really do your research and keep

it simple. don't overdo it. >> project confidence is a tricky one. you don't want to project arrogance or entitlement but confidence is good? >> confidence is all about preparing. for every two minutes preparing one minute of confidence. prepare, prepare, prepare, barbara corcoran says that. dealing with the interviewer thinking thousand he want you to answer the question and think about the energy and cues giving you in the room. trying to make conversation or look like hair inthey're in a r. >> check your body language, connect and resonate all important. >> really important. >> yeah. body language, great, firm handshake, eye contact and posture entire time. >> we have questions viewers sent in. >> love that. >> the first one for mika and daniella. >> i'm emma from orlando and want to know how soon after an interview should you follow-up

and how persistent should you be? >> ladies. >> within the first 24 hours. a handwritten note. easier to send an email. using that professional sort of sense of writing a note and sending it will really make your resume. >> be prompt. maybe wait a day. do it the next day. people are so busy. write back right away you miss the opportunity to remind them. >> like dating. two-day rule back in our day? >> i know. >> one more caller, viewer, who called in. less listen. >> i'm from boise, idaho and want to know the appropriate time to ask about benefits and vacation time. >> that's a tricky wicket. mika, i know what you'll say. we're on the same page. >> starting out don't ask about vacation time during the interview. benefits have that conversation with hr as you get farther along. and don't sign any contracts without going over it. >> yes. also you're going to build your career. going to build your value, and there is going to be a point

where you're in a situation where they're coming to hire you. that's when you ask ask those questions with confidence, maybe even in the first conversation, because they're looking to get you. in the beginning, you're pitching yourself. >> before i let you go, mika, this issue of confidence but not entitlement. you meet young people on your show every single day of the week. as i said before obviously you have an eye for talent and found a gem here in daniella. how do you use that issue? what advice would you give to young people? >> all about timing. if you read the book you'll really get a sense of all the different things you need to be trying to do at the same time. and you can. you will then find your way. the book really walks you through that, because that confidence is important. that sense of, when you give, you're given an assignment. that eye contact, i got it. you want to be able to say those words all the time. i got it. unless you don't. then ask. you've got to develop the confidence developing your voice in the workplace and then also knowing your moment to pounce,

it was changing. >> i wanted to make sure, i'm not shirley. i'm her mother, still. >> know, she's an employee. i'm the boss. >> reporter: the family love for baking runs deep. >> baking since i was about 13, 14. >> my love of baking came from growing up watching my mother and grandmother baking. being in the kitchen with them. >> reporter: anderson was a young mother at 17. amp graduating from college and 17 years in accounting she wanted a change. >> it was good. i enjoyed it, but i realized i really wanted to be able to engage with people more. >> reporter: so anderson went to culinary school and found her calling when her pop-up stores were a hit. >> everything, people was buying it. you need to open up over here. >> reporter: six years ago took that advice to heart after winning a grant, anderson quit her job and opened good takes and bakes. >> came and told me she wanted to open a bakery. i knew she would get a bakery

powder and baking soda and just going to mix it up a little bit. just have it all xbcombineds in there. cake flour so the cake is soft and tender. >> you sift your flour? >> yes. >> why? >> make sure all the lumps are out. so we have a smooth batter and a smooth cake. >> what's next? >> over here already going, butter and sugar. add in extract as well as oil and let this mix and it's going to get nice and fluffy. >> what kind of oil? >> canola oil. we use canola oil for most of you are stuff. at home let it mix longer, nice and fluffy. add in eggs one at a time. because the egg is put in volume and air into it. right? you want it nice and fluffy. add in eggs one at a time and let them get completely incorporated. >> mom, how's she doing? >> doing okay so far. >> all right. that's got to be hard working next to mom. >> it is. it is.
