staying there for the next couple of hours with mid-50s. look how fast the temperatures go up. by noon we're at 75. we will see slightly warmer temperatures today. i'll talk more about that. vianey has a look at the morning commute. it is looking good, especially for friday light commute. that's exactly what we're noticing. we're noticing a slow spot. it may be overnight construction along highway 101. if you do encounter that, the southbound lane, probably just overnight construction. no reports of any accidents through that area. this one just popped up in the south bay. we will definitely be looking into that. tri-valley drive times. westbound 580 grant line road to 680, 24 minutes. 580 to vargas, 11 minutes. i'm going to go take a look and see what the accident is in the south bay. hopefully it's nothing serious. i'll get back to you in just a bit. back to you. sounds good.

fears over u.s./china trade talks falling apart, sparking stock concerns that they may tank today. for a time this morning they appear to be poised to come out flat. futures seem to change a little bit. the dow, nasdaq, s&p appear to come out lower at least at the opening bell. as for the trade talks with china, they are set to resume in washington after the u.s. raised the cost to import chinese goods. tariffs officially kicked in at midnight. tracie potts joins us live with what this means for all of us because a lot of goods coming from china, tracie. >> reporter: right. and a lot of things we buy with that made in china label will now have an extra 25% tacked onto them. that went into effect overnight. president trump tweeting he is planning to do the same with billions more goods. and he thinks this is easier than trying to work a deal with china.

just after midnight, tariffs, the price china pays to bring $200 billion in goods to the u.s. jumped from 10% to 25%. it affects clothes, groceries, electronics, furniture, sporting goods and more. and it happened right in the middle of negotiations. why? >> they renegotiated the deal. i mean, they took -- whether it's intellectual property theft. they took many, many parts of that deal. and they're renegotiating it. you can't do that. >> china has been cheating far too long. >> they cannot build their middleclass and, worse, their military on the backs of american farmers and american manufacturers and american workers. this has to stop. >> could the u.s. tariffs backfire? after the last round, this maine lobster company took a 60% hit. >> i used to have 16 to 20 employees based on the season. and now i have approximately half. i have 10. >> last year, 7 bucks a pound

this time of the year. now we are getting $5.75. >> reporter: and prices are expected to go up. this new jersey company is already charging $20 more per bike. >> we have had no choice but to pass these costs onto our customers. >> reporter: remodeling your kitchen? tile could cost more. >> probably a 7% to 8% increase, net increase to the consumer. >> reporter: all riding on talks set to resume today. now, we understand that the chinese will be at the table to work this out today. they are signaling washington to meet them halfway this morning. laura? >> one to certainly watch. affects so many. and the north korean missile launch. the first photos showing the launch issued by the north korean government. the u.s. and south korean military are analyzing the launch of two suspected short-range missiles yesterday.

it is north korea's second in five days. south korea says both missiles flew around 200 miles. well, in contra costa county, educators and the district are hitting a wall in negotiations. families for 31,000 students want to know how this will affect them. bob redell is with us. this is the sixth largest district in the bay area. >> reporter: correct. as you mentioned, mt. diablo unified serves over 30,000 students. teachers say going on strike would be a last resort. if it does come to that, teachers are fully up to the challenge. within the past 24 hours, the union declared both sides are at an impasse for a new contract. the teachers have been working without a contract since july of last year. both sides will meet with a mediator to see if that person

can craft an agreement. if that fails, then the teachers might choose to strike. in addition to higher pay, the teachers want lower class sizes, more support for bilingual students, and more clowns hrors, librarians and nurses, counselors. some libraries are open one day a week. east bay times reported teacher pay in this district, however, is competitive. and the district spends 90% of its budget on salary and benefits. you'll recall earlier this week teachers next door in pittsburg declared they're at an impasse in their respective contract negotiations. they will begin with a mediator next week. bob redell, "today in the bay". so many students being affected here hoping they come up with an agreement soon. thanks, bob. attorneys today will try to nail down some of the details ahead of this summer's competency trial on a ran don stabbing on an open bart

platform. they are deciding whether he is fit to stand trial. earlier this week the judge ordered a competency trial for july. right now there is some disagreement over the test that will be conducted by experts to provide as testimony. >> well, more prosecutors are filing more than 100 federal hate crime charges against the suspected southern california synagogue shooter. one woman died in that shooting last month. three others were hurt. the 19-year-old suspect could be eligible for the death penalty. good morning we're following up on reports still under way in butte county. according to the company overseeing the efforts, so far crews removed 672,000 tons of

debris. that's more than half the size of the golden gate bridge. 2,000 properties are completely clear of debris in the town of paradise. they are still clearing 100 properties per day on average. the california department of insurance now says $8.4 billion was caused by the camp fire. the housing market in the bay area is starting to cool down. it could be a good time for those looking to purchase a home to jump in. silicon valley is hosting a fair to help first-type home buyers. they will help in lending, rent, real estate, and credit counseling. >> we're asking if they have a down payment saved up. how much do they have. are they considering funds for closing costs. that's another additional cost they need to really think about. have they gone to a home buyer education class. >> the workshop will cover

affordable housing options, down payment assistance like down pair empowerment program, and pre-approved, processed and lending information. it is tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. to noon on park moore avenue in san jose. >> san francisco launching a new push to make the city more bike friendly. during yesterday's bay area wide bike to work. the mayor wants to double the pace and create 20 miles of protected lanes over the next two years. she is also transit agencies to crack down on drivers blocking bike lanes. another sign summer is near. yosemite national park reopens. it closes down each year due to snow-related hazards. but there will be limited access at glacier point as of 9:00 a.m.

he then deleted that tweet. we'll have more in a minute. if you were watching yesterday, i told you about roku, the little company that could. we talked about it before the bell. roku shares rocketed 28% on the open on thursday. all right. uber is on our board for real, pricing stock at $45 a share in its ipo last night, significantly below the range it set for itself. the price values the company $82 billion, far smaller than previous valuations. in account tpa, smaller than late were investors bought in at. it's easy to figure out why. lyft, you remember, went public early this spring. its stocks have fallen 20%. if you bought lyft shares this morning, you'd be buying 20% less than fat cat bankers bought it at its ipo. thus, uber has underpriced its ipo. uber doesn't want to overprice. so at $45, it's hoping for a pop on the market. uber won't start trading right

away. it takes time after the open to make a market. pete suratos will have more coming up in a live report. the other big story, of course, the new tariffs on chinese goods went into effect at 12:01 a.m. goods on the lyft currently at sea get to come into port of oakland at the old 10% level. this gives the chinese and the americans a bit of time to work with. chinese negotiators have more meetings with trade representatives today. coming up at 6:00 a.m., we'll talk with a shipping expert kwho helped get the ships loaded as quickly as possible to beat the deadline. this is more than just expensive goods. it's about jobs. and finally convincing the chinese to play fair with america's intellectual property. >> debuting unmanned space ship he plan to land on the lunar

chance of showers this morning. all that activity stays to the south. boy, it is a lot of activity. live clouds and ground lightning strikes being picked up by radar. you can see it is moving south of fresno to parts of southern california. the disturbance moves through. it will stay away from the bay area. we wake up and walk out the door to a few clouds. mostly cloudy start to our coastal areas. it will be clearing out as we go throughout the day. it will stay cool as we keep clouds and fog close to the shore. and going into tomorrow, we will also see some cool weather. and then clearing out inland. but overall we have a really nice and quiet forecast. mostly sunny skies. inland areas reaching the 70s. mothers day, 77 inland. slightly cooler next week with more of a breeze. a slight chance of rain with san francisco staying here 60 degrees. more temperatures in the lower 50s.

vianey, you were tracking the crash in the south bay. what's the update? >> it doesn't look like anything serious. a single vehicle car crash. only minor slowing in the area. we will be okay with that. now, we do have some clearing lanes through the east bay and also along the peninsula. so far our friday morning commute is off to a fantastic start. let's take a look at drive times for you. southbound 680 from 580 to vargas, it starts getting busier around this time. 11 minutes. 880 from 238 to highway 84, about 11 minutes. a live look at an already very busy bay bridge toll plaza. metering lights are on. 5:21 right now. it is starting to get backed up. that's typical around this time when the lights turn on. also, a live look at oakland both directions. northbound and southbound. we're moving it along. even through san jose. a lot more cars out there. everybody keep on driving safe. i'll send it back to you. good advice as always.

the environment. while 56% are looking because of lower long-term costs. but americans still have several worries about electric vehicles. 58% are concerned there aren't enough places to charge. and they're worried they will run out of charge while driving. they think electric vehicles may not be suitable for long-distance road trips. okay. so good news here, let's tell you about a new grant for low-income families in the bay area. the clean vehicles for all program offers up to 9,500 for families to buy electric, plug-in vehicles. the program is only open to cars built in 1996 or earlier. you also have to be a bay area resident. and you have to earn less than $49,000 a year or $103,000 a year for a family of four. i will soon be a family of four, so i have to do the math if i kwa y

richmond bridge, 8 minutes. san mateo bridge, 13 minutes. back to you. thanks so much. won't take long to make a lot of millionaires today. wall street giving uber and investors a big green light. the company finally making its public debut. >> $82 billion, this is being called the largest in five years. pete suratos live for us in san francisco where the newly minted millionaires may be tooling around town. pete? >> reporter: yeah. that's right. good morning to you, marcus and laura. the big ipo announcement in an hour when the markets open on the east coast. there has been a lot of discussion, debate leading into this ipo. in fact, here's where things stand leading into that announcement in an hour. uber is expected to be priced at $45 per share. that's on the lower end of the target range, between $44 and $50. that market value is still at more than $80 billion.

that's five times more than the closest competitor lyft. some did take part in a strike by logging off 12 hours. unclear what kind of impact it had. they were calling for better wages and transparency for uber. the company said in the past it worked to improve the driver experience with insurance protections among other things. let's talk about the local impact in the bay area. in san francisco, the board of supervisors, members calling for 1.5% tax on the stock options companies give to employees. it would raise between $100 million and $200 for homeless and education programs. and let's talk about the home prices. it could surge due to all the new millionaires from the ipo. now, here's what one realtor and resident had to say today. >> we talk about engineers. what about the service industry? people who can't buy a million dollar property. where do they go?

>> i'm actually thinking about moving out of california. it's just getting too crazy. you know, i can't afford it. >> reporter: clearly a lot of ramifications across the bay area when that ipo take place. we'll get more information when the markets open at 6:30 a.m. live in san francisco, pete suratos for "today in the bay". all right. thanks for the latest, pete. well, if you ride pwrart regularly and think there's fewer people on your commute, it turns out it's not your imagination. this also may have an impact on your bottom line. for the second year in a row, less people are getting yon board. they are considering hiking fares 5% to make up for the lower ridership. it could cost an average 40 cents more for longer trips next year. bart directors may decide to raise fares again in 2022. berkeley police are interviewing people who were at martin luther king jr. middle school when someone reported a

man with a handgun. they secured the campus. they never did describe the man in the report, who may have been a parent or caregiver. five people are in custody accused of luring tinder users to remote areas and then robbing or even carjacking them. four suspects are seen here. the other suspect is a minor. police say the suspects used fake accounts to convince victims to show up at a san jose park, where they were robbed. they are not saying how many victims were targeted. >> 5:35. one woman is recovering after being shot in her home in pittsburg. it happened yesterday warren way, north parkside drive. pittsburg police officers responded and discovered several vehicles in the home struck by gunfire. thanks to a good vehicle description, deputies later tracked down the car and the suspect, who is now in custody. you might have noticed something off driving down 101. drivers are confused by the

mishap odd looking jag ed lane stripes you see. caltrans admits they are a problem for san francisco to the south bay. it's because those lines are no longer painted on but they are adhesive strips like a sticker. they switched a year ago. some were installed a few days after wet weather. so they slightly peeled off. when the big rigs drove over them. there has to be five dry days before the new ones can be added. listen to driver's concerns. >> when we are driving back at night and see that. >> you could fool a self-driving cars if they are out of place or jagged. >> work started monday to restripe the lanes of 101 from san francisco, county line to gilroy. it will take the contractor through the end of the month to finish. caltrans said the stripes are still under warranty. so it won't cost taxpayers anything. >> they fool your eyes in the middle of the night.
