tv   Today in the Bay  NBC  May 10, 2019 6:00am-7:01am PDT

6:00 am
sunshine. clouds across the bay area. by late morning, everything is starting to clear out. we have seen a few spots getting mist and drizzle. our sturs statemperatures start up. we have t . overall, we have had friday light commute. we had a minor fender pwerpd in the south bay. that has now cleared out. the traffic is looking to recover. i have a bit of sad news in santa rosa. a deadly crash reported along 101 and river road. the coroner is on the scene. that's an unfortunate situation. the unrelated crash behind that
6:01 am

"today in the bay" tracie potts standing by with the latest on the negotiations between the u.s. and china. >> what does this mean for our wallets? >> reporter: well, it means that the cost of anything with a made in china label may be going up. not only the 200 billion that got tacked with a 25% tariff overnight, but now the president
6:02 am
said billions more he will tax as trade negotiations get under way 30 minutes from now. tariffs officially kicked in at midnight. just after midnight, tariffs, the price china pays to bring $200 billion in goods to the u.s. jumped from 10% to 25%. it affects clothes, groceries, electronics, furniture, sporting goods and more. and it happened right in the middle of negotiations. why? >> they renegotiated the deal. i mean, they took -- whether it's intellectual property theft. they took many, many parts of that deal. and they're renegotiating it. you can't do that. >> china has been cheating far too long. >> they cannot build their middleclass and, worse, their military on the backs of american farmers and american manufacturers and american workers. this has to stop. >> could the u.s. tariffs backfire? after the last round, this maine lobster company took a 60% hit. >> i used to have 16 to 20
6:03 am
employees based on the season. and now i have approximately half. i have 10. >> last year, 7 bucks a pound this time of the year. now we are getting $5.75. >> reporter: and prices are expected to go up. this new jersey company is already charging $20 more per bike. >> we have had no choice but to pass these costs onto our customers. >> reporter: remodeling your kitchen? tile could cost more. >> probably a 7% to 8% increase, net increase to the consumer. >> reporter: all riding on talks set to resume today. they said they will come back to the table even though president trump says they will be paying more. >> tracy potie potts, thanks so. >> we have photos of the launch

6:05 am
contract since july of last year. the next step is both sides to meet with a mediator to see if that person can help to craft an agreement. if that fails, teachers might choose to strike. in addition to higher pay, they want lower class sizes, more support for bilingual students and more counselors, librarians and teachers. some libraries are only open one day a week. east bay times reported, however, teacher pay in this district is competitive and that the district spends 90% of its budget on salary and benefits. you'll recall earlier this week teachers next door in pittsburg, they also declared an impasse with their respective contract negotiations. and they're going to be meeting with a mediator starting next week. reporting live in concord, bob redell, "today in the bay". no surprise they want more pay when we talk about prices of homes going up with uber and
6:06 am
lyft deals going ipo. certainly we understand what's going on here. thanks, bob. well, attorneys today trying to nail down some of the details ahead of this summer's competency trial for the man tied to lastier's deadly random stabbing on an oakland bart platform. he is used of murdering nia wilson and seriously injuring her sister last july at the macarthur bart station. right now there's still some disagreement over tests that will be conducted to provide as testimony by experts. prosecutors are filing 100 federal hate crime charges against the synagogue shooter. one woman died in the shooting last month, three others hurt. the charges could make the 19-year-old suspect, john ernest, eligible for the death penalty. the attack in poway and an earlier arson were motivated by hate.

6:10 am
commute. >> all right. and things have improved for us. so far it is 6:09. if you have to head to work, you don't have to worry about major delays. whether you're driving through the south bay, in through the east bay, i am starting to notice slowing on northbound and southbound 880. aside from that, we are doing pretty well. i have an update, traveling highway 17, a told you about a stalled vehicle north of summit road. there was a right lane blocked. good news, that has cleared out. the traffic recovered quite nicely. your east bay drive times, 580 to vargas, this is where i'm noticing the buildup. 20 minutes. back to you. all right. thanks, vianey. >> 6:10 right now. coming up next on "today in the bay", are americans interested in electric cars? there are only 200,000 electric vehicles on the road today across the country. coming up at 6:25, the number of people who now say their next car will be electric. speaking of cars, uber

6:15 am
we talked about it before the bell. roku shares rocketed 28% on the open on thursday. all right. uber is on our board for real, pricing stock at $45 a share in its ipo last night, significantly below the range it set for itself. the price values the company $82 billion, far smaller than previous valuations. in fact, smaller than some late investors bought in at. it's easy to figure out why. lyft, you remember, went public early this spring. its stocks have fallen 20%. if you bought lyft shares this morning, you'd be buying 20% less than fat cat bankers bought it at its ipo. pete suratos will have more coverage on what it means for san francisco throughout the morning. the other big story is the new tariffs on chinese goods. it went into effect at 12 listen 12:01 a.m. goods currently at sea, get to come into ports like the port of oakland at the old 10% level.
6:16 am
which means a huge scramble the get goods under way to california. the ceo of global supply chain alum. the company helped exporters and importers beat the deadline. tell me about the last couple of days. quite a scramble. >> it certainly has been a scramble. the scramble has gone all the way up to the ceo in the companies. this has a big impact. but certainly most of the goods that are being imported from china that two months to two-year lead time. these orders have been placed years ago. whatever we could get on the ships at the last minute was the lower tariffs. we should expect the tariffs really impacting everything coming in.
6:17 am
and we are waiting to see when the lyft goes into effect. >> importers and exporters need to predict what will happen long term. it does take so long. what are they expecting? what do they expect happens from here on out? >> i think a lot of people hope that the conflict will be resolved. a lot of people hope that this is a negotiation ploy. i think people are more and more starting to expect this is a long-term situation. i predicted 20 minutes negotiation. and i believe that's correct. some people have 10 years and i think that's too pessimistic. >> you are involved in imports, exports and tariffs. who pays the tariffs on chinese goods? >> oh, we all do. the consumers, businesses.
6:18 am
whether it's a physical war, a trade war, it is right now the businesses are the cannon fodder. so we all end up paying. and of course the biggest concern we all have is that this is going to push us into a recession, a local recession. >> sure. hannah kain, thank you for joining us live this morning and settling that issue. >> my pleasure. >> all the fees get passed down. which is why a free cup of coffee might be nice. >> i know that's right. mike inouye at peet's coffee on mowery avenue. mike, i know you have good news for us all. you are bringing us something back, right? >> great news. i'll bring you back some great coffee codes. i am on my 12th cup of coffee. got us jazzed this morning, guys. we are able to bring our viewers who come to visit us, able to get free coffee on us.
