live local news update. >> and our midday show at 11:00. it's going to be a great day. and we end right now with a live look at san francisco. it is friday. get out and enjoy the weekend. and happy early mother's day to the mothers out there. >> happy mother's day. good morning. breaking news. going big. breaking news. going big. president trump takes on china, unleashing a massive hike in tariffs overnight. $200 billion worth of chinese products now hit with a 25% new charge. china vowing retaliation quickly. the goods from soap to sneakers to smart phones that are about to get a lot more expensive. hot spots. this morning american b-52 bombers arrive in the middle east as tensions rise with iran. and in north korea the new images of kim jong-un overseeing his latest missile launch. the u.s. seizing a north korean cargo ship.
7:01 am
the overnight developments just ahead. red flags. students caught in the colorado school shooting reliving the nightmare. >> i can still hear them faintly, i can still see the screaming. >> and now claiming warning signs were missed. the two suspects heading to court today. we're there live. all that plus tracking great whites, a shark mystery in the waters off of north carolina. moon shot. amazon's jeff bezos unveiling his most ambitious plan yet. and heart felt harry, the prince opening up about missing his mom, princess diana, during his first outing since the birth of royal baby archie. today friday, may 10th, 2019. >> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today" with savannah guthrie and hoda kotb. live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> hi, everybody, good morning. welcome to "today," nice to have you with us on a friday morning. we are going to celebrate mothers in a really big way this morning.
7:02 am
>> we have a very special morning planned, including a chat with our favorite new mom, hoda kotb, that's coming up in just a bit. we start this morning with international tensions facing the united states on multiple fronts. >> that's right. overnight the trump administration raising the stakes in a big way, tariffs going up in this trade war with china and the pentagon making new moves to confront apparent threats from iran. then there's north korea, growing concerns now over yesterday's missile launches. we're covering all of it. we will start with nbc's chief white house correspondent hallie jackson. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. with err all waking up to those dramatic new tariffs now going into effect. the good news is that both sides are still talking, the chinese and u.s. negotiators are set to meet again later today to keep the conversation going and it comes as the president is keeping up the conversation on twitter. he is just tweeting now there is absolutely no need to rush. but because there was no deal before that midnight deadline, the price we all pay for a lot of what we buy is set to spike.
7:03 am
to the president it means a better negotiating position. >> i happen to think that tariffs for our country are very powerful. >> reporter: but to many americans, it means a price hike potentially on everything from soap to screwdrivers, sneakers to smart phones. that's because the overnight move raises tariffs from 10% to 25% on 2$200 billion worth of chinese goods. not just big ticket buys like cars and washing machines, but staples at your business box and hardware stores since so much of what we buy here comes from there. it even includes groceries like fruit, nuts and fish. >> it's just frustrating because you just know that most politicians aren't familiar with what it's like to live every day in the middle class. >> you have to juggle what you can afford and what you can't afford and a lot of people can't even do that. >> reporter: take an average family of four, one trade group estimates the tariffs could cost
7:04 am
them an extra $767 per year. why? because companies now have to pay more for what they import from overseas. a cost that can get passed to you. that's what's happening with arnold kamler who owns this bicycle shop in south carolina and gets his parts mostly from china. already he has had to hike prices about 20 bucks a bike. >> we're paying for it and it's being passed on to our customers. >> reporter: the white house has argued a tough stance will ultimately help the u.s. get a better deal with china and some american industries like steel companies may end up benefitting as businesses seek out american made products to avoid the tariffs. but others, like farmers who sell their crops to china, are bracing for a tough summer. >> we want a trade deal done as fast as we can get it. >> reporter: keep in mind it will take some time for those chinese goods to actually reach the u.s. as negotiators keep talking, but china is already threatening to retaliate against the u.s. which would really, guys, escalate this trade war to
7:05 am
an unprecedented new level. >> hallie, thank you so much. here with more on the impact the effect on your money nbc's steffy ruhle covers business for us. i want to go back to the beginning because a lot of us 101 economics are needed here. what exactly does this mean is this what are these tariffs all about? >> so what this comes from is there is a dispute over intellectual property. you know, china basically makes all the stuff we buy, everything you order on amazon for the most part comes from places like china. they manufacture significantly cheaper than we do, so you know what's happened to manufacturing here, it doesn't exist. the president is saying i want to take on china, because when you try to bring a product to china, if you are an american company, they steal your technology. that's called a technology transfer, intellectual property theft. the president is saying no more. china should not be able to send all these products here so cheaply. i want to bring manufacturing back to the united states. the issue is it doesn't work that way. manufacturing isn't coming back tomorrow and when they impose
7:06 am
these tariffs as they call them, it's you, the consumer, that ends up having to pay more. >> so the technique he's using to accomplish this thing that most people agree needs to happen, we need to get tough with china, the tariffs are very controversial. >> very controversial. we need to get tough with china, which is why in the obama administration there was something called the trans-pacific partnership. we partnered with other countries and said let's take on china. let's figure out where they're vulnerable and push them to say, do you know what, you can't just be stealing our technology. we have to make this fair. so what the president is trying to do is even things up, but when you just impose these tariffs, a hike of 25%, lots of products, shampoo, clothing, small electronics, those companies are going to raise those prices for you and me. >> the chinese are threatening retaliation here. what might that retaliation look like? >> well, we have to think about what we send there. you just saw in hallie's piece for the most part it would be agriculture. we just saw this week a report coming out of the world bank
7:07 am
said it's blue collar workers and farmers that have gotten hit the hardest. soybean farmers want to send their soybeans to china. when china jacks up the tariffs over there it's those soybean farmers that are going to say what am i going to do. china is already getting a lot of soybeans from south america. >> the notion is if the u.s. says we are going to charge you 25%, fine, china, you want to send us this stuff but you are going to have to pay 25%, the chinese companies says that's fine i will raise our prices 25%. >> correct. do you know who that hits? you and me. we already saw it last year with washing machines. if you bought a washing machine in the last year it was likely $100 more. >> thank you very much. appreciate it. now to another source of tension right now for the united states, north korea. this morning kim jong-un is making new threats on the heels of yesterday's missile test. today's senior international correspondent keir simmons has the latest on that. keir, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. reports this morning that north korea's leader kim jong-un is urging his military to, quote,
7:08 am
increase its strike capability in areas that potentially threaten south korea and the tens of thousands of u.s. troops stationed there. while this morning u.s. and south korean officials have determined these latest tests were short-range missiles. overnight new pictures of kim jong-un surfacing, they show him watching the latest of multiple missile launches. in images unverified by nbc news the north korean leader is smiling but international tensions are mounting and now news the u.s. sees this north korean coal ship saying it violated sanctions. president trump expressing his growing frustration with the north korean leadership. >> no one is happy about t i know they want to negotiate, they're talking about negotiating, but i don't think they're ready to negotiate. >> reporter: south korea's president moon jae-in warning if the missiles prove to the ballistic it could be a violation of u.n. security council resolutions. he is urging dialogue saying ominously misunderstandings can accumulate. according to south korean
7:09 am
military officials thursday's two missiles were filed from a northern western city while saturdays were launched from the east of the country. the missiles are not the long-range rockets potentially capable of reaching the u.s., but worried many in 2017, but experts warn some resemble russia made missiles which are capable of exploiting gaps in u.s. and south korean defenses. the tests follow a confidence building summit for kim jong-un with president putin, the two men toasting each other last month. north korean leader baited by the russian military, frustrated by deadlocked talks with america. the nuclear issue still unresolved. north korea testing its weapons and washington's resolve. and according to a south korean lawmaker this morning these missile tests may be part of a new north korean weapons system, craig, suggesting kim wants to test his missile capability or perhaps to demonstrate that capability to the u.s. >> keir from north korea to the

middle east here for a moment. the pentagon reportedly sending b 52 bombers to the middle east after reported threats from iran. what more do we know about that? >> a lot of hot spots around the world right now, craig. those b-52s reported this morning to have landed in qatar. these are pictures provided by the associated press by the u.s. air force. they said this week these b-52s are part of additional forces being sent to the middle east to counter what the trump administration says are clear indications of threats from iran to u.s. forces in the region. iran dismissing the deployment as old news announced now to intimidate it calling it psychological warfare, guys. >> those b-52s in addition to the aircraft carrier group that's been sent. thank you. former fbi director james comey speaking out on the mueller report says it appears the president obstructed justice in his opinion. those comments coming during a town hall on cnn last night. >> do you think he had criminal intent based on what you have seen now in the mueller report?
7:11 am
>> it sure looks like he did in connection with a couple episodes, the direction to don mcgahn to get the special counsel fired is to my mind a flaming example. >> of corrupt intent? >> yes, of corrupt intent. >> comey also said the president is not above the law and said that the justice department will, quote, have to take a serious look at charging the president after he leaves office and is no longer protected from prosecution. also this morning the young suspects in that school shooting in colorado are due in court today and we're hearing from students who now claim that red flags were missed. nbc's gadi schwartz joining us with the latest on that part of the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. both those suspects due in court a little bit later today, expected to face a long list of charges including murder and attempted murder. this as we are hearing chilling new details from inside of that school with witnesses saying they heard one of those suspects singing while everybody else was hiding in fear. >> we heard yelling, we heard
7:12 am
police tackling, screaming, singing, shockingly singing, and it was heart wrenching. >> reporter: in highlands ranch a 16-year-old sophomore named sean is traumatized. >> i can still hear them fauntly, the screaming and singing snrks haunting sounds. >> attention, please, lockdown. >> reporter: students at the stem school listened to hiding in the dark. >> i was sitting in the corner texting mom and dad saying that if something happens i love them. >> reporter: some students angry over red flags the older suspects seemed to have waved in their faces. described as aully to younger students who they say often joked about shooting up the school. >> he also would whisper, get close and put his arm around you and whisper in your ear don't come to school tomorrow. >> reporter: the district facing questions over whether they were warned by an anonymous parent. the school says those claims were unsubstantiated, administrators filing a defamation suit against the

anonymous parent. meanwhile multiple law enforcement sources tell our affiliate that investigators are trying to develop whether a bullet from a private security officer's gun may have hit and wounded one of the students. and today was supposed to be the last day of class for those stem students, instead their school year cut short. we still haven't heard from the district attorney's office whether they plan on charging that juvenile as an adult. craig, savannah, back to you. >> gadi schwartz for us there in highlands ranch, colorado. thank you. now to amazon's jeff bezos who is turning his attention to space unveiling an ambitious plan and vehicle yesterday hoping to send humans back to the moon. miguel almaguer is following this story for us. >> reporter: bezos is known for going big and now he's literally shooting for the moon. he says his space team is working with nasa in what could be a big step for his company and eventually a giant leap for
7:14 am
space tourism and space colonization. >> this is an incredible vehicle and it's going to the moon. >> reporter: the world's richest man highlighting his latest high tech mission. >> this is blue moon. >> reporter: jeff bezos unveiling a cutting edge lunar lander called blue moon that he says could be a pioneer in space exploration and colonization. >> it's time to go back to the moon, this time to stay. >> reporter: even showing these images envisioning what a colonization in space could look like, including homes, high speed transportation and perfect climates. bezos says creating an infrastructure out of space for future generations to build on is vital for our planet and blue moon could help. >> we're going to build a road to space and then amazing things will happen. >> reporter: blue moon is the brainchild of bezos rocket company blue origin, the amazon founder launched blue origin

new generation that never saw the original moon landing. savannah, back to you. >> pretty exciting, miguel. >> would you get in that thing? >> absolutely not, no. i will stay right here on earth with you because i know you're not going, either. >> no, i'm good. >> send us a postcard. >> dylan dreyer might go. >> would you, dylan? >> i don't think i could. no. i'm with you guys, i will stay right here. we've got a lot of rain right here and also down through parts of the gulf coast. heavy, heavy rain. i mean, we had torrential ground pours, cloud to ground lightning through eastern texas and now moving into most of louisiana. we do have flood watches in effect for this area. we do have a stalled front so when that happens the rain kind of stays in the same place. there's an area of low pressure that's going to ride along this front so it will transition the rain from louisiana over into mississippi and alabama and eventually as we go into the weekend a lot of that rain moves into the southeast, spotty showers, heavier downpours, isolated thunderstorms. on sunday it lingers across the east. so we are going to see more rain through virginia, north carolina
7:17 am
and also into the mid-atlantic as well. so we do have our largest chance of flooding through alabama, mississippi, back through louisiana and texas where rainfall could come down at a rate of 2 to 3 inches per hour putting rainfall totals up to around 3 to 5 inches, especially through southwestern louisiana. just to put this into perspective, the amount of rain you typically see throughout the whole front of may in houston is 5.09 inches. the forecast is for 5 to 8 inches of rain. so a month's worth of rain falling with this storm system, same for shreveport, also into jackson, the average in may is almost 4.5 inches, we are forecasting 2 to 4 inches from this system. that's a look at the weather across the country, we will get to your local forecast in the next 30 seconds.
