and on a tuesday morning. may 14th. taking a live look at walnut creek there. another storm looming off the coast right now. thanks so much for starting your morning with us. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. we are clear today. >> as far as the rain. we will start to see the clouds rolling in ahead of the storm system. not a lot of sun for the bay area. temperatures staying cooler as well. a live look at palo alto. we will continue on with temperatures in the mid-60s.

low 60s by 11:00. this is the storm we're talking about. it moves closer to the bay area, bringing our first significant rain since the end of march. mike, you are tracking a crash in san jose. >> i am. the one i'm looking for is right by a camera at 280/17. they found the flashing lights. it just moved away right before the show started. clearly the red lights are moving northbound 17 at 280. it may still be on the shoulder. back to you. thanks, mike. a developing story out of alaska. two sight-seeing planes collide midair with tourists on board. >> what do we know, bob? >> reporter: we know that these two float planes were carrying

14 passengers out of vancouver when they collided midair yesterday afternoon. here's video from inside one of the planes. this was taken a few days prior to yesterday's crash. a tourist posted this on facebook when he realized the tail numbers matched the plane that crashed yesterday. this was the otter flow plane that had 11 people on board. we learned after it collided it stayed mostly intact. take a look at this. this is a stock image of a beaver float plane. this plane broke apart, leaving behind 2600 foot long debris field. it was ketchikan, alaska. another person is missing. a ship rescued some in critical condition. a bay area couple recorded this announcement shortly after the

accident. >> and i'm deeply saddened to inform that four guests, along with the pilot, did not survive the accident. an investigation by authorities is under way to determine the cause of the accident. we are ready now to depart the port. >> the bay area couple who recorded that video put out a message on twitter to their daughter that reads in part, everyone on the ship is in a somber mood and in shock. we're all waiting to hear more about the people in the hospital and hoping they pull through. bob redell, "today in the bay". very sad. thank you very much, bob. 4:33 right now. bay area uber driver under arrest after trying to prey on its passengers. they fear there may be other

victims. >> one victim threw herself from the car while it was still moving. >> scary. and a little bit paranoid. >> reporter: that's how the women in berkeley are feeling after the arrest of gabriel amari, a former uber driver arrested and charged with kidnapping with intent to commit a sexual assault. >> angry, nervous, afraid. >> reporter: a gas station manager telling how he helped one of the victims. >> she noticed something was off with the driver. >> reporter: he told the berkeley woman he was not going to take her to work. she feared he was going to sexual assault her. that's when she jumped out of the moving or qaa. two hours later, a woman claimed he touched her on the thigh on a pickup in oakland.

>> people are taking advantage of other people, whether it's sexually or monetarily. >> reporter: uber releasing this statement saying, upon learning of this, we removed the drive's access to the app and stand ready to assist police in their investigation. cheryl hurd, "today in the bay". san jose and at&t will donate $200,000 to bring wi-fi to seniors and low-income residents. they will unveil the plan today. a large conference begins tomorrow. a live look at the sap center. a little bit of air may have come out of the shark tank last night. many sharks are singing the blues. st. louis blues took control of game two in the conference playoff series. sharks still have a chance to tie. the third peeled fielded for the blues who won 4-2.

the teams head to st. louis for game three tomorrow. there's no shortage of story lines into tonight's warriors/rockets playoff game. one everyone will be watching closely. "today in the bay"'s pete suratos joins us at oracle. a mom usually says, i love all my kids equally. >> reporter: it will be a tough decision pore the mom and dad and the curry brothers. that's one of the big storylines in tonight's conference final. they will take on the portland trail blazers tonight. but the first story is brother versus brothers, steph curry versus seth curry. i want to point out this is the first time the brothers have faced in the conference finals since 2017.

so that will be a big deal happening. and of course we talked about the parents deciding which jersey they will wear. we'll keep an eye on that. they may flip a coin to make that tough decision. another big story line is damian lillard, this is the homecoming for him. oakland high school. we got a chance to head to the oakland high school gym where he renovated it recently. we talked to his old high school coach. >> i haven't had a chance to talk to him yet. i know once again that is a big shift on his shoulder. i can close down the oracle. that would be fitting into the story to have a hometown come in and send oracle off on a proper ending i guess for him. >> reporter: fitting story.

administration raised tariffs on $200 billion in chinese imports. it ranges from tvs, cameras, and agricultural products. they will hold a meeting to decide whether to tariff a further $300,000. it will cover every one untouched. smartphones, lps, tablets. apple stock took a big hit yesterday, town 6%. it not only manufacturers many devices like the iphone in china but generates 20% of sales there. walmart, meantime, upping its delivery game. rolling out next-day shipping on 200,000 popular items, including diape diapers, toys, nonperishable foods. walmart is expected to be available in 70% of the country by the end of the year. it will ship in one box or as

a very good morning to you. taking a live look outside. people are already up and about overlooking palo alto. a nice start to our day. look at that morning commute with mike. 4:47 right now. sometimes baseball stars take extreme measures with umpires. miguel cabrera getting tough after arguing. well, in his 10th career ejection, yesterday against houston he eventually decided to take his mouth shut to prevent any problems. that didn't last. he used it on his face for an impromptu hair removal device. >> ouch. that would hurt. >> trim it up a little bit. looking outside, a lot of people having fun before the rain

drops. >> we have 24 hours before the rain starts moving in. we track the incoming storm. very unusual for especially mid to late in may. it's kind of a winter-type storm that will be moving in. for the north bay, we will start to see the showers late tonight, into early tomorrow morning. the rest of us seeing the rain coming in, getting heavier for tomorrow night. and still early showers on thursday. by thursday afternoon, we could see the light rain turning into some thunderstorms. here's what we're expecting in terms of how much rain we could see. the models have been fairly consistent. we will get half to three-quarters of an inch of rain. we will be rain shadowed. in the north bay, we could have over two inches of rain, maybe closer to three inches in ukiah. normally we're getting three-quarters for the whole

month of may. as we look at the last time, we got a significant rain, at least a half inch of rain. for napa, we haven't had this kind of rain in 51 days. it's been 72 days since we had three-quarter inch rain in livermore. san jose, it's been 6 days since we had a half inch of rain. it's really a big impact considering we have had such a long time with dry weather. here's what we're expecting once again. for the santa clara valley, we will get closer to a half to maybe three-quarters of an inch of rain. in the north bay, it could be two inches plus. thunderstorms likely on thursday afternoon. winds will be anywhere from 35 to 50 miles per hour, especially wednesday night. and then the sierra snow, we're still talking about that. near 6,000 feet we are looking at significant snows there. check out what the computer models are showing this morning. close to two feet of snow in the

sierra. i can't believe it myself. we'll have to see. even more snow after that going into the weekend. early next week, we could insure over 40 inches of snow in king ve vale. we go from 71 today with cloudy skies. 60s as the rain moves in. scattered showers on thursday, clearing out friday. a lot here to watch the next seven days. mike, you're updating the earlier crashes. >> that's right. we saw one on the peninsula up here, pacifica, that did clear from the area. no problems for the freeway. highway 17 at the 280 interchange, that's all cleared as we talked about. we saw the flashing lights khraoer earlier in the show. top of the screen, disabled vehicle just about clear. no problems from the transition.

devastating wildfires in california. the debate is over what to do after a wildfire. for decades, the forest service argued clearing away burned trees is better for the environment and helps to protect from future wildfires. critics say that just isn't true. they are convinced it makes the practice spread faster. the forest service rakes in $40 million each year from selling off the burnt trees. that's a strong financial incentive to prioritize logging. >> i think the financial benefit is minuscule compared to the actual real on the ground benefit for the safety. >> so is clearing away burnt trees slow them down or speed them up? we investigate, next. >> coming up next on "today in the bay", a massive fire at a home in california's largest nut distributor. what we are learning about the

4:55 right now. developing right now in downtown sacramento, firefighters are trying to figure out what started a massive fire that heavily damaged the blue diamond almond factory. >> it started 9:00 last night. you see the video of flames

shooting out from that building. about 250 workers were inside and successfully evacuated. three, however, were injured, including two sent to the hospital for smoke inhalation. so far no word on the extent of the damage. blue diamond is the world's largest tree nut processing company and serves over 3,500 growers statewide. new this morning, a bizarre story coming out of southern california. a man is accused of randomly beating a woman to death with an electric scooter. this happened yesterday afternoon in long beach. police say the 63-year-old victim was walking down the street when a mangan assaulting her with had a good samaritan on a scooter tried to help, the attacker grabbed the scooter and used it to beat the woman. officers later arrested the suspect, who has not been identified. now to decision 2020. presidential contender joe biden has suggested it may be ripe for
