another wave of slowing after a quick traffic break. they continue to move crews north into palo alto. sensors showing a little bit of slowdown. traffic is flowing once again. we are transitioning red, orange, and eventually to yellow and green again. the southbound crew completely cleared from the center area. that's where they are focusing around willow. a smooth drive south bay and east bay. 580 toward the maze. no lanes reported blocked. the earlier problems have cleared from the roadways this morning. mild build for the cash lanes >> on capitol hill this morning, president trump is weighing in on heading to war with iran. lawmakers expressing their frustration over the lack of information. will help get people off the streets after a discouraging report showing the number of homeless in the city is growing. "today in the bay" pete suratos goes us live in san francisco with more. good morning, pete. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, laura and marcus. unfortunately the numbers we are seeing, when it comes to the homeless population across the bay area, is increasing. when we talk about the homeless population, san francisco definitely serves as the epicenter. let's start off with the numbers when it comes to san francisco. now, according to city officials, they are saying that the homeless population is just a shade over 8,000. that is an increase of 17%. now, san francisco mayor london breed is responding to the news of this with an announcement of a $5 million investment to prevent homelessness, including moving assistance, family reunifications and housing and unemployment. alameda county showing homeless population of above 8 now as

well, a 43% increase compared to 2017. now, that includes individuals sleeping in streets, cars, abandoned properties, as well as residing in emergency shelters and transitional housing. santa clara, the number of homeless just over 9,000, an increase of 2,000 since 2017. they have $2 million towards housing developments, the number of homeless is outpacing the effort to find people a place to live. we do expect to get more homeless data in the coming weeks. contra costa county is slated to provide that monday, san mateo will do so next month. pete suratos for "today in the bay". pete, thanks so much for that update. >> 5:05. we are learning more about the person killed while riding a bicycle on highway 24 in oakland earlier this week. the crash shut down lanes during the afternoon commute wednesday. chp says 83-year-old zang rode

out into traffic and was hit. by a toyota prius. the driver didn't have time to react and hit zang going 60 miles per hour. the driver was not hurt. no word why zang was on the freeway. >> all the rain means fresh snow in the sierra. this is not from the sierra but a live look at the east bay, which you can drive through to get to interstate 80 and kingvale. isn't that amazing to see? that is a shot we would see in january, february. but it's may. guess what, chains are required. this is kingvale this morning. they are required out there. and more snow and sleet on the way expected over the weekend. snowplows are out. some ski resorts are still open. it is kind of amazing. we could see continuous storms. >> oh, yeah. we have a lot more coming our way. we look out at what's happening

in the pacific with this storm, and another one right behind that. we will see also very cold air along with that producing more sierra snow. checking out homewood, it opened this weekend. they were reporting 10 inches of new snow and parts of squaw valley still open. just a few resorts still open and an opportunity to see all the snow. looking at our temperatures, our highs for today in the south bay looking at couper team know, 65 degrees. it will be a breezy day with winds coming from the south. and our high temperatures for antioch reaching 69 degrees. martinez tops out at 68 degrees. it will be a cool and breezy day as the skies clear for the peninsula, reaching 64, san mateo. most live upper 50s in san francisco. and the north bay topping out at 68 degrees. so we do have a very nice day. nice little break from the rain. but then it returns tomorrow. so i'll talk about the timeline as you make the weekend plans.

so far the commute is looking pretty good. >> it is, kari. looking great. crashes mostly cleared from the roadway. san ramon, it is on the shoulder. i'm not marking it because everything is moving slowly. just note that if you travel north of the dublin interchange in contra costa county, smooth flow. a little bit of slowing on westbound highway 4 a tad through antioch. east bound. that crash moving off the roadway. clear by the time you get to the antioch bridge, rio vista. we will look at 580 itself. smoothly out of the discovery bay or altamonte pass. westbound is the commute toward dublin. east bound standards to back up. recent snow. we just showed you from kingvale, there is snow on the shoulder. keep that in mind. don't be shocked. here's the bay bridge. we're not shocked about that. there is a little bit backup.

pinterest and uber both performed badly on the markets and made companies who have yet to go public uneasy. this is a picture of an ntsb report showing the top of a tesla model 3. maybe we will not show that. the roof sheered off. the driver drove under a semi truck trailer and didn't survive. the preliminary report said the driver was on autopilot and had not touched the steering wheel, nor attempted to avoid the accident. checking our records, we think this is the first fatal crash of the model 3. very similar to the first fatal autopilot crash in florida where a driver hit a turning truck the autopilot didn't see. there is this video. you will recall here in the bay area, a google engineer letting his tesla x drive and hit a barrier and died. self-driving capability is not as good as drivers thought it was, and you need to stay alert.

on the "today" show, hiring at facebook. the company is having trouble finding those they need. only half of engineers offered jobs take them. new data show women ceo in "fortune" 500 companies make more than the average ceo in "fortune" 500 companies. barr make $22 million a year. the same data show there are even fewer women ceos, just 20 of the 500 in "fortune" 500 are women. discovery television ceo makes $129 million in stock and cash. so, again, the average woman in "fortune" 500 makes more than men but there's only 20 of them. if there are more, the number might go down. >> it would change the amples there. it is at the bottom of the screen. upper 50s and low 60s in the forecast. let's talk about all the rain that we have already measured with that big storm that rolled through. mt. tam had three inches of rain. it will make all the grass and trees bright green. santa rosa had almost two and a half inches of rain. that was a good soaking. dublin, inch and a quarter. san francisco, three-quarters. san jose close to a half inch of rain. and we're not done. we have been talking about more rain coming in. let's just enjoy the sunshine today. morning commute in brentwood, 54 degrees. it will be a slow climb with those temperatures only at about 63 at noon. so i think that's still jacket weather. with our high temperature today reaching up to 65 in cupertino. 66 in los gatos and morgan hill, 67 degrees. highs reaching the upper 60s in contra costa. liver mohr, up to 63 there.

fremont, 66. half moon bay a chilly 56 degrees. and san francisco reaching up to 58 in the mission district. north bay up to 68 in santa rosa. and napa today reaching 67. so the rain is clearing out. we'll see our skies clearing throughout the morning. by afternoon, it will be a beautiful day. but staying on the cool side with some breezy winds. our next storm system starts to approach tomorrow morning. in the or north bay, we see pretty much rain covering the bay area by 11:00 to 12:00. all those afternoon outdoor plans looking a little soggy. so make plans to stay inside. and even on saturday evening it looks like it will be raining heavily in spots. sunday mornings, right before another round moves in. the potential of getting an inch to inch and a half of rain. this is all well above normal for may. as we continue to track more rain and more sierra snow.

for the weekend, looking at another foot of snow in some of the higher elevations above 5,000 feet. next week, more storms coming in could produce three feet of snow in total. a few breaks here and there. gradually warming by the end of next week. mike, you are saying things are looking better out there. >> as we move on, crews continue to clear, kari. 101 looks like the last of the crews cleared from palo alto. speeds have been at the limit the last few minutes. no problem for the south bay. east bay, crews over at 238, southbound 880, may lose a lane or two. late scheduled work over there. palo alto does maintain a smooth flow off the dumbarton bridge. 880, going nicely there. still operating at speed limits. o for oakland. that's around 5th.

>> reporter: the man accused of brutally killing a san jose woman in her own home is set to enter a plea in santa clara county court. he is a 24-year-old transient from el salvador charged with the murder of 59-year-old bambi larson. eddie garcia said he beat and stabbed her to death in her own home. i.c.e. agents tried to deport him nine times before but detainer requests were not honored. part of the reason police were able to crack this case is because they did see surveillance from neighborhood cameras showing him coming and going from bambi larson's home the day of her death. police say he should not have been on the streets. i.c.e. kraegts tried to deport him nine times before but that their detainer requests were not honored. the i.c.e. agents said he was

convicted of 10 crimes in three years. santa county clara sheriff said i should have had time to evaluate his status as a serious and violent felon and that she would advocate to change county sanctuary policy. now, in the last month, this showed up near bambi larson's home saying that the mayor has blood on his hands for what happened to bambi larson. they said lhe will work harder o make san jose safer. his hearing is scheduled for 9:00 this morning. we are not allowed to bring cameras into the courtroom. the judge denied our request. but we will be there and we'll make sure you know what happens. laura and marcus. >> thanks for the latest, kris. 5:33 right now. we all know about the s.a.t. it can make or break a high school student's future.

keira klapper is here to explain how it is all working. >> reporter: marcus, good morning to you. the adversity score would not be reported to students or parents only to the colleges. it is 1 to 100. it is calculated using 15 factors, including the crime rate and poverty level of the student's home neighborhood, the relative quality of the student's high school, family income, and environment. it comes as the college cheating scandal focuses on wealth and privilege. the board said race is not factor into the score. some principals say the new score will help students. >> when we talk about an adversity score, it means that colleges will now have an opportunity to kind of get a full scope of understanding

about what a kid can bring to their college campus. oftentimes it is the qualities not part of the application process that oftentimes lead to success for young people. >> you know what i found interesting is 50 colleges actually used the scoring last year during a trial period. the college board plans to expand it to 150 universities this fall and even more next year. marcus, back to you. very interesting, keira. thank you. well, it is now looking certain that hundreds of teachers in the east bay won't be in the classroom monday. they are expected to strike. negotiations broke down this week. both sides are trying to bridge a huge gap between the pay hike demands and what the new strict is ready to offer. this would be the first strike in history of the district, which has 11,000 students in nine schools >> several bay area counties are joining forces with governor

gavin newsom to push for lower prescription drug prices, including san francisco, alameda and santa clara counties. back in january, newsom signed a collective bargaining group for agencies that buy medicine for retirees, hospitals and inmates. leaders from the bay area counties have now agreed to sit at the same negotiating table. according to good rx, medicine costs 14% more in san francisco compared to the national average. now to a follow-up that is somer to warm your heart a little bit. a martinez world war ii veteran will get to go to france. he won't be going alone. it is a story we first told you about in march. 96-year-old jake larson reached his go fund me goal. in fact, over $10,000 was raised. it is enough to send him, his two sons and two grandsons. he is the only survivor member

mission. although the exact reasons why it crashed are not yet clear. happening today, the debate over president trump's border wall picks up in an oakland courtroom. that's where a federal judge hears a request from 20 states to block the president's federal emergency plan. the president wants to divert close to $7 billion from other government agencies as a way to foot the bill for the wall. new revelations in an old case. >> the case of michael flynn. he was caught lying to the fbi, the white house, the american public about his contacts with russians. now, part of those details were redacted in the mueller report. but a judge has just ordered the redactions restored. so now we can read them. among the details we're reading about the speufbgs, and may get

access to recordings, flynn's phone call with the russian ambassador kislyak, the ones tapped by the fbi. also, a voice mail we believe was from the president's lawyer, john dowd. the lawyer was trying to influence what flynn told investigators. that could certainly be interpreted as obstruction. and president trump is angry at john bolton for pushing him into war with iran. he was one of the architects of the iraq war. he and secretary pompeo have been pushing the current president towards the new war. earlier this week, president trump said only that he would make his final decision about the war and him only. he told the secretary of defense he wants to talk to the iranians, not fight them. here's the president asked by the reporter. it's hard to hear. the president said i hope not. it's not great audio but seems an important bit of news. >> mr. president, are we going

let's just get you out the door heading to tear don station in san jose. it's cloudy. may have a little mist. not going to see any more heavy rain. and the skies will really be clearing late morning, early afternoon. still cool temperatures. our skies all clear as you make dinner plans for the evening, heading out. today is the best day of the weekend to get outside and enjoy. now, as we go into tomorrow morning, it's already going to be raining in san francisco on northward at 8:00 in the morning. and then that rain quickly spreads into the rest of the bay area. early afternoon, it's going to be raining and getting heavier going into the evening where we see the yellows and the oranges indicating some really heavy rain. this first system moves out. and then the next one moves in on sunday at 8:00 on sunday once again, it's raining in the north bay. and then spreading inland, going into the afternoon. and then by sunday evening, may catch a break late in the -- i'd say 8:00, 9:00, starting to see some clearing.

and then by monday, we're starting out with some dry weather. in all, with these next two storms coming in, we could see an additional inch to two inches of rain on top of the really high amounts of rain we have already seen. that's a live look at lake tahoe golf course. and i wanted to show you some of the scenes out of the sierra with some of your live cameras. northstar not seeing for the season. they closed it for the season. but we are seeing heavy snow and great ski conditions heading into the weekend. we will see the resorts that are still open getting another foot of snow. and then a lot more snow in the forecast. we have two storm systems this weekend. another one tuesday and wednesday. and thursday now is dry with a high of 70 degrees.

recovered. the plan is to piece together to get a better idea what led up to the crash. sources tell our investigative unit as many as a third of all guns are untraceable and homemade. that's what police call ghost guns. senior investigator steven stock has been digging into the problem for months now. law enforcement officials are clearly worried about the jump in the number of these ghost guns that they are finding on the street. they start out like this. a hunk of metal milled out a bit, something anyone can buy anywhere, say a sporting goods store or the internet. with a a little know-how and a few tools you can turn it into a
