"today in the bay" continues right now. we want to talk about the weather. the rain has cleared out for the moment. >> for now. for today. we're looking good. then tomorrow the next round of rain comes in. and it looks like it's going to be a soggy weekend across the bay area. so plan for that. we are seeing that first system that rolled through, the first two storm systems that rolled through. now over the sierra and pushing east. headed to fruitvale parking lot, it will start cloudy. low 60s by early afternoon. going into the forecast once

again clearing today. we'll get a closer look at the timeline coming up. mike, you were checking on it something in fremont. >> i am. it is not a lot. we are showing a great, steady flow of traffic for southbound 880. it is a lighter route. saw a little bit of slowing. a disabled vehicle or a fender-bender somewhere approaching there. it looks like the slowing sorted itself out. we'll check with chp. it might have quickly cleared from the roadway. things are light around the bay. there's the south bay. there's the peninsula. you're at speed into san francisco. and through contra costa county, a freight flow of traffic. the only thing we see that stands out is the toll plaza. on capitol hill, president trump is weighing in on heading to war with iran. lawmakers expressing their frustration over the lack of information.

"today in the bay"'s craig boswell is live in washington with more. craig? >> reporter: marcus, good morning. good morning, everyone. some lawmakers are now being brought into the loop, but still a lot of concerns and some frustrations remaining. a short response from president trump to a direct question about war with iran. >> mr. president, are we going to war with iran? >> i hope not. >> reporter: a handful of lawmakers, the so-called gang of 8, including members from both parties, were the first lawmakers briefed days after the administration cited unspecified intelligence reports that iran is planning to attack u.s. forces in the middle east. congressional leaders say they're being left in the dark. >> the senate is sort of outraged that we haven't been briefed by the administration. >> reporter: the administration sent military to the middle east. >> i have not been briefed about why we withdrew people from the consulate and the embassy. that's disappointing and unacceptable.

>> reporter: nbc news confirmed the president told patrick shanahan he does not want to go to war with iran. >> a responsibility in the constitution is for congress to declare war. so i hope that the president's advisers recognize they have no authorization to go forward in any way. >> reporter: critics say national security adviser john bolton is to blame. >> he's trying to go to iran for this war. >> i temper john. which is pretty amazing, isn't it? >> reporter: he advises that they are pushing him to conflict. and an iran briefing for all senators is next tuesday. for all house members will be later next week. marcus, back to you. craig, something everyone will be watching for. thank you. we are getting new numbers when it comes to homelessness across the bay area. for some, this may come as no surprise. but the numbers are increasing. and san francisco's mayor is

responding with a multimillion dollar proposal to help ease the crisis. pete suratos joins us. one of the counties now seeing a spike. pete? >> reporter: yeah. where we are seeing the numbers when it comes to the homeless population increase across the board when it comes to a few counties that release the numbers. recently overnight and reporting that. but san francisco, really when you talk about the homeless population, that's the epicenter of this issue. let's talk about san francisco's numbers, according to the latest data. according to city officials with san francisco, the homeless population is just a shade over 8,000. so that is an increase of 17% since they last took the numbers. san francisco mayor london breed is responding to this news with an announcement of a $5 million investment to prevent homelessness. that will include move-in assistance, family reunificat n reunifications for housing and employment. here in alameda county, a 43%

increase compared to 2017, including individuals sleeping in streets, cars, as well as abandoned properties. and then in santa clara county, the number of homeless was just over 9,000. that is an increase of more than 2,000 since 2017. even though the county committed more than $200 million toward housing developments, they say the number of homeless is outpacing the county'sest to find people a place to live. now, we are expecting more homeless data in the coming weeks. we know contra costa data to release monday. reporting live, pete suratos for "today in the bay" >> all right. pete, thank you. 6:05. we are learning more about the person killed while riding a bicycle on highway 24 in oakland earlier this week. that crash shut down lanes during the afternoon commute on wednesday. chp saying 83-year-old rode out

into traffic and was hit by a toyota prius. the driver didn't have time to react. it hit zang going 60 miles per hour. no word why zang was on the freeway maybe your children use google docs. >> it can be used for sexting or cyberbullying. monitoring services including bark and gaggle say a growing number of students are using the cloud-based platform as a diy social media network. all students need to do is invite friends to be collaborators. they create secret chat rooms and they create so-called digital burn books for online harassment>> you walk in the room and you see your child working on a google document and you think excellent.

to go public uneasy. >> ceo of general motors. women ceos of "fortune" 500 companies make more than the average male ceo in the "fortune" 500. barr makes $22 million a year. but the same data show there are fewer women ceos than ever. just 20 of the 500 in the 500 are women. this is a picture of an ntsb report showing the top of a tesla model 3. maybe we will not show that. the roof sheered off. the driver drove under a semi truck trailer and didn't survive. the preliminary report said the

driver was on autopilot and had not touched the steering wheel, nor attempted to avoid the accident. checking our records, we think this is the first fatal crash of the model 3. very similar to the first fatal autopilot crash in florida where a driver hit a turning truck the autopilot didn't see. there is this video. you will recall here in the bay area, a google engineer letting his tesla x drive and hit a highway barrier on 101 and died. government regulators remind people tesla self-driving capability is not as good as drivers thought it was, and you need to stay alert. not touching the steering wheel doesn't mean you shouldn't be essentially driving. >> right. and paying attention. >> yeah. >> approximate i had a friend who had one and i was in it. and i felt uneasy. >> it's spooky, isn't it. >> it is, a little. >> do we let the computers drive completely, in which case there is no steering wheel. or do we include a steering wheel. if there is, you have to be in control at all times. >> thank you. >> well, "today in the bay" our mission is to help you get up, get informed, and get going.

already roll in. we are seeing everything. satellite imagery with the first storm approaching the gulf of alaska, closer to the bay area. and clouds are swirling here, too. another area of low pressure. it is already been a historic week. mt. tam, we had over three inches of rain. santa rosa measuring three times the normal amount for the month of may in a couple of days. we have had two and a half inches there. tub lynn, an inch and a quarter. san francisco, three-quarters of an inch. oakland, a half inch of rain. san jose reached over just about half inch of rain there. as you head out for your commute this morning, we will start to see skies clearing, sunshine in

brentwood. cool with mid-50s. 64 degrees at 1:00 today. going through the hour-by-hour outlook. expect skies to gradually clear up. going into the evening, it's looking good. as you head out for dinner tomorrow morning, that's when the next storm system arrives, first bringing rain to the north bay before noon. we see it spreading all across the bay area, getting heavier as we go into the evening. there will be a brief break overnight saturday into sunday. by sunday morning, we're waking up to more rain. and it just becomes heavier early afternoon. there may be clearing for the latter part of the weekend from sunday afternoon into early monday. we may see that storm systems moving out. maybe an inch and a half in the mountains and parts of the north bay. next week, we have more showers in the forecast. we are not going to take a break

and close the storm door just yet. our temperatures staying much cooler than normal, only reaching into the upper 50s and lower 60s. mike says the commute is pretty great right now. >> it is looking great, kari. you know what, if you're in the oakland area, go ahead and check out the free coffee from bob. here we're looking great south bay along the peninsula. you probably don't want to make that trek. lake shore, a few bart stations as well. we're looking great on the transit lines, looking great on the roads. a little more slowing westbound 80, berkeley, right about university. a little more slowing. bay bridge toll plaza, you have the backup. richmond-san rafael bridge, more folks populating the cash lanes. fastrak always a great dry. look at that. one set of folks traveling in the hov lane. bay bridge, a few more folks traveling carpool. keeps you out of the backup. no problems for friday right now. back to you. all right.

nation and the world: a look at some of the news making headlines around the nation and the world. this week's unusual may storm soaked southern california as well. the l.a. times called it record-setting rain even though less than an inch fell. from may 16th there had never been more than trace amounts for most places. history made in asia has taiwan lawmakers vote to give same-sex marriage couples the same rights as straight couples. it is the first legislation anywhere in asia to recognize same-sex partnerships. and there are big bang theory fans everywhere. the sitcom went out with a bang last night after 12 seasons. the philadelphia inquirer called

nothing going on right now. i need to knock on wood somewhere. >> thanks, mike. a day in court for a accused killer in a crime that shocked the bay area. it dropped san jose into a debate over sanctuary cities. >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus and laura. a man accused of killing a san jose woman in her own home is set to take a plea. 24-year-old transient from el salvador charged with a murder of 59-year-old bambi larson. eddie garcia said he talkinged her for some time before beating and stabbing her to death in her own home. neighbor surveillance shows her walking to and from her home on the day of her death. immigration officials and san jose police say he should not have been on the streets. i.c.e. reports that agents tried to deport him nine times before

but their detainer requests, hold requests were not honored by santa clara county nor l.a. county. one i.c.e. agent reported he was convicted of 10 crimes in three years. santa clara county sheriff issued a statement at that time saying i.c.e. should have had the time to evaluate his status as a serious and violent felon and that she would advocate to change county sanctuary policy. this sign popped up near her home saying mayor liccardo has blood on his hands for what happened to her. the chief says licardo is not the person responsible nor the person people should be angry with. clearly igniting quite a debate. he is scheduled to appear in court this morning at 9:00. we are not allowed to bring in our cameras. we asked, and the judge denied. we will page sure you know what happens next. marcus and laura>> certainly want to continue to follow this one. thank you so much, kris.

>> 6:32. new details. it is now looking certain that hundreds of teachers in the east bay will not be in the classroom monday. they are expected to strike. negotiations between the district and union city and south hayward broke down this week. right now both sides are trying to bridge a huge gap between union's pay hike demands and what the new haven school district is ready to offer. this would be the first strike in the history of the district which has 11,000 students in nine schools. 6:33 right now. we all know about the s.a.t. exam. it can make or break a high school student's future. now they are adding an adversity score to level the playing field. it is causing controversy were. >> reporter: marcus, good morning to you. the adversity score would not be reported to students and parents, only to college officials where the students are applying. it's a number between 1 and 100.

calculated using 15 factors including the crime rate and poverty level of the student's home neighborhood. the relative quality of the student's high school and family income and environment. the plan comes as the college admissions cheating scandal on colleges and wealth. the nonprofit that oversees the s.a.t. says race is not factored into the score. the "today" show spoke with principals who say the addition of the new score will help students. >> when we talk about an adversary score, to me what that means is that colleges will have an opportunity to kind of get a full scope of understanding about what a can bring to their college campus. and what i have come to know is that oftentimes it's the qualities that are not a part of
