7:05 am
there is a bill now before the statehouse here in the capital where they have to vote if they want to pass a bill that will restrict abortions. the deadline they are facing though is if they are going to pass it, they have to do it by the end of the legislative session, which is later this afternoon. >> what do we do? >> reporter: the abortion debate is raging across the nation with renewed energy this morning. missouri the latest state to consider a restrictive abortion measure. state senators passing a bill to ban abortions at eight weeks of pregnancy. the only exception, a medical emergency. not for rape or incest. >> we are collectively standing as one to defend the unborn. >> reporter: the bill now goes to the statehouse before it can go to the republican governor who supports it. >> we have the opportunity to be one of the strongest pro-life states in the country.

look, there are many reports from the europeans, and those of u.s. lawmakers criticizing the lack of information and then reports of divisions even within the trump administration with president trump criticizing members of his own administration. you know, savannah, all of this goes back to president trump's decision to pull out of the iran nuclear deal. the question unanswered, will that lead to a stronger, tougher deal with iran? could it, as people here, for example, in israel would love, lead to regime change in iran? this is a game of brinksmanship in which both sides have to threaten war but neither side wants to go to war. as we know from history, that kind of brinksmanship can fail with catastrophic consequences. >> it's a dangerous game for sure. keir, thank you very much. in addition to the tension there, another issue, immigration. the president's latest attempt to overhaul the system, criticism from both sides on capitol hill. peter alexander has details on that story. peter, good morning.

english, education and job offers. top democrats say the plan is dead on arrival. >> the word that they use, merit, it is really a condescending word. are they saying most of the people that came to the united states are without merit because they don't have an engineering degree? >> reporter: 11 million undocumented immigrants already in the u.s., including young people brought to the country as children, so-called dreamers. >> what the president is putting forward is not the complete immigration bill. it's a good start. >> reporter: the president making a political case. his allies acknowledging it's an effort to unite republicans heading into the 2020 campaign. >> and if for some reason, possibly political, we can't get the democrats to approve this merit-based high-security plan, then we will get it approved immediately after the election.
7:14 am
>> reporter: the president tweeting about the topic this morning. even the most powerful republican in congress, mitch mcconnell, was remarkably non-committal in his response to president trump's immigration rollout, saying he looks forward to reviewing the plan. savannah and craig. >> peter, meanwhile, there are reports this morning that president trump is hyper focused on the border wall. what more do we know? >> reporter: he has long touted his desire to have a big beautiful wall, as he describes it. with recent discussions with aides at the white house the president has been detailing his ideal vision, calling for what would be a steel fence painted black, in his view, so in the summer heat the metal would be too hot to climb. and he wants the tips, the top of those slats, to be pointed, not round. according to the post, would injure border crossers. >> peter, thank you. now to a frightening close call.
