joining us. i )m terry mcsweeney the news at 4:30 starts right now. >> that hail, evidence of a very wet weekend for the bay area. >> it was not a good day no matter how you cut it for the san jose sharks. we'll get to them in a minute. right now, rob, how long until we get back to some springtime? >> it will be a while. our concern right now is the weather in hayward. we got 55 degrees. still some showers out there. we have been seeing a line of heavier showers and thunderstorms. meantime to the south bay san

jose catching a bit of a break, but you can see some pockets of heavier showers and a few more here offshore. a lot of the lightening bolts off to the east of the bay area, so things are slowly starting to calm down. the future cast shows decreasing showers, especially from 7:00 tonight until 11:00. we are expecting a chilly start. but another round of showers that may include thunderstorms. a closer look at the timing on that coming up in about 12 minutes. >> here he comes, moving in on jones. he scores! >> now to the other top story, a tough afternoon for sharks fans. the sharks now playing for their playoff lives. live now from the shark tank. rog, it was a little bit of a depressing day.

>> reporter: we have been anchoring our coverage throughout the afternoon here. it was ugly to say the least. you know what, this was the earliest start time for a game for the sharks here at home all season long and it looked like they never got out of bed. it was that bad. the entire bay area rallying around the sharks. not just downtown san jose, but san francisco. a lot of people showing up. it was brunch with the sharks today, sunday brunch. but they never scored. no reason to cheer. back here at the shark tank, here is some hope, here is some positive images. river thornton and jagger burns. yes, as in joe thornton's son. dads were there. dads were working, but it never came to fruition for the sharks today. let's show you the game now. this is emblematic of what happened. the sharks frustrated in the

third period. this is what happens in a blowout. you bring out the tough day and a lot of chirpiness on the ice. e va cane also leaves the game. sharks lose 5-0 to st. louis. if they lose again on tuesday night, the season is over. if they win on tuesday night in st. louis, then there is some hope. game seven will be back here in san jose. let's bring in ian cole. very interested how they will rally in these next 48 hours. a lot of injuries. what do the coaches and players have to say? >> reporter: yeah, for sure. as for this game, you talk about the early start game. you could argue the first two goals were set up by mistake. martin jones misplaying the puck early on in the second, led to an early blues 2-0 lead. but the main concern yet is injuries on this. we saw some big hits tonight.

coach peter deboer talking after the game after this loss breaking the game down but also talking about those injured players. >> you know, a few things could have changed the game. i mean, i thought we played well enough to come out of that first maybe up. i thought, you know, arguably a five minute major on tommy hurdle that if it's called, that's a momentum changing play right there. you know, but we come out of the first down 1-0. and then hurdle can't go and carlson can't go, so we started taking on some water. i thought, you know, they took over in the second period and then, you know, when he got hit high, we lost our composure there in the third. not our finest moment, but i understand where that emotion is coming from and with what he's been through. we just got to regroup. we got to go in and win a game. >> reporter: yeah. and the sharks owner tweeting

to happen this morning but was pushed back to 5:00 p.m. because of the weather. one senior just told me his brother flew in on that morning ceremony. >> it affected some of my family members. i know my brother flew in yesterday and he was scheduled to leave at 8:20. i don't know if everything is going to be on time or whatnot, i know we will be pushing on time. i'm not sure if my brother will be able to make it the whole time, but he's going to do what he can do. >> yesterday, the commencement was canceled due to concerns about the weather. one thing we were told that was key in that decision was that campus has a grass field. heyward here is astroturf. still a handful of graduates decided they were disappointed by that and they will hold their own small ceremony in concord, anyway. again, the commencement here getting underway at 5:00 p.m. reporting live in heyward,

christy smith. >> thanks very much. the threat of rain and thunderstorms did not stop tens of thousands of people from doing this. in san francisco today, the 108th bay to breakers race. plenty of ponchos. 40,000 people signed up. organizers say the weather didn't seem to impact the your honorout at all. we talked to that group we saw a moment ago dressed as ruth bader ginsburg. i hope there was eight of them. >> it's actually a lot of team work goes into staying coordinated while trying to run fast. >> i don't know if the notorious rbg wears her outfit that short, though. >> most came to enjoy the costume run. there was actually a competitive race in there, somewhere.

a grandmother and her two young granddaughters saved from a car submerged in a pond. it happened just before 9 la a daring rescue in the north bay, saved from a car submerged in a pond. take a look at this very dramatic video. it happened before 9:00 last night at a mobile home park. patrol officers say the

grandmother was driving this jeep when she made a wrong turn and drove into a pond. by the time she realized what happened it was too late. the suv became stuck about 15 feet from the edge of the pond. and within minutes it submerged up to the roof. police jumped in, helped the seven-year-old inside swim to the edge and helped the three-year-old out of an open window and then helped her and her grandmother to safety. amazingly, everyone is okay. we spoke with a neighbor who saw the whole rescue happen. >> i thought, it's not that deep. but apparently there is a lot of sludge or mush or whatever in the bottom. and, so, it just sunk and sunk and sunk. but luckily i called 9 11. >> it does not appear drugs and alcohol was a factor. following developing news out of the white house. president trump is lashing out

at the first republican to accuse him of engaging in impeachable conduct by trying to obstruct the mueller investigation. we get the latest now from jennifer johnson. >> michigan republican congressman just tennessee amash now the first republican to say president trump engaged in impeachable conduct for trying to obstruct robert mueller's conversation. arguing on twitter that william barr deliberately misrepresented mueller's report and president trump's actions meet the threshold for impeachment. democrats backing him up. >> i think it's a watershed moment. there is now bipartisan support for really understanding the seriousness of what is in the mueller report. >> he showed more courage than any other republican in the house or senate. but what may be pushing us in the direction of impeachment in any event has less to do with justin and more to do with the fact that the administration is engaging in a maximum

police officers in northern california. the third highest in the enti per capita, the highest number of citizens shot by police officers in northern california. it's the third highest in the entire state. why are there so many police shootings in valaho. >> we want to caution you what you are about to see is real as it happened and some of it may be difficult to watch. >> i'm already going. >> made a phone call during the pursuit, said he wanted to him himself by cop. >> this sergeant has worked vallejo streets for three years now. >> some think as a police officer i get up every day and want to come in and kill someone. that's nuts. >> death here remains a hair trigger away both for the man in the car and for police.

we'll come back to this scene because its split seconds decisions in standoffs like these thatdy v divide vallejo t. just four of the 16 people officers have killed since 2011. ten were people of color. the two most recent are still under investigation. officers were cleared on wrongdoing by the strict attorney in all other cases. in february, police shot 20-year-old ran artist to death after he fell asleep in his car at a taco bell drive through with a gun in his lap. >> magazine is half out. >> david harrison watched police body cam footage of the incident.

>> it's come to the point now where we see the car and we don't see a protector. we see an adversary. >> they see these killings as a result of deeply rooted problems that exist in this city, a city forced into recession in 2008, that prompted city leaders to cut its police force in half, something the city has yet to recover from. >> are there things you can do better in order to reduce the number of these shootings? >> certainly. we should strive to do better every single day. but we're only focussed on a police problem. we're not considering there is a community problem. why is our crime rate so high? why are these shootings occurring. >> we compared them with richmonday, cities with similar populations and high violent crime rates. while police killed 16 people, richmond officers killed 3.

>> because of our depleted numbers, these officers, they don't have the time to be able to spend with our citizens and as a result we look like this force occupying their neighborho neighborhood. >> we're among the lowest paid. our applicant pool consists of inexperienced people who we have to put through the academy. when you become a police officer, it takes you a good three to five years to figure out what the heck you are doing. >> we also found the police department does not come close to reflecting the diversity of the community it serves. residents are divided between white, asian, hispanic and black. >> hard to kill somebody if you know their name. if officers don't look like the community they're policing, it makes it much easier for misunderstandings to happen. >> does your staff need to be

more diverse? >> we're stuck with hiring from the pool that apply. >> some people in the community might say we're sort of at war with the police. >> honestly, that's crazy. you know, this city has in the neighborhood of 60,000 police contacts a year, somewhere around 3,000 arrests. and 150 result in force. >> in the time that we road with this sergeant, he and his officers saved a little boy and his mother from a pit bull attack, deescalating a potential stabbing. >> i have been involved in shootings myself. and trust me, et nisty to do with it. >> there was that man in the highway that said he wanted to die by what's called suicide by cop. >> have somebody go up and talk. >> i got it. i got it. >> set him up. you got it. two people.

especially after 7:00 tonight, skies clear, but the chilly start 40s into low 50s. we catch a bit of a break tomorrow. most inland highs in the mid-60s, only near 60 in san francisco. and upper 50s around half-moon bay. >> the pattern gives us a break news. watch this cold storm dropping down across northern california, which will once again set the stage for instability and a few pop up showers. we might see another chance of isolated thunder in north bay. that's tuesday. we might see more showers as we head into wednesday. notice what this low does over the end of the week. it goes back and sits in southern california, southern nevada, hopefully far enough to the east, by the way, to keep those showers away from the bay area. you see that on thursday? some of that coming off the sear yeah like we had two weeks ago.
