5:05 am
support for really understanding the seriousness of what is in the mueller report. >> a key house democrat said the amash criticism does not make a bipartisan case. >> what may be pushing us in the direction of impeachment has less to do with justin amash and more to do with the fact that the administration is in a massive obstructionism campaign. >> they are locked in a battle. craig boswell, nbc news, washington. 5:05. hundreds of teachers in union city and hayward will hit the picket lines at 7:00 this morning. in the first day of the strike that the new haven school district. teachers and the district are still far apart in negotiations. all schools will still be open today using substitute teachers and administrative staff to teach. >> we were confident that the money is there to have the

5:36 am
of this promise and the bay area connection as well. >> you guys have spoken at graduations. and i have never been to a graduation with that financial promise that could really change those graduates's lives. it happened at morehouse college where billionaire robert f. smith delivered the commencement address. there was definitely reason to listen to what he had to say anyway. smith did more than give the graduates advice. he gave the graduates financial freedom. >> i have a challenge to you, alumni. this is my class, 2019. and my family is making a grant to eliminate their student loans. >> i really saw it as a liberation gift.
5:37 am
robert smith essentially said to our students, i'm going to make you free to follow your passions. >> so you can see the reaction from the students in the crowd there. it is estimated that this student loan wipeout promise will cost smith's foundation $40 million. while he challenged alumni to step up, he also looked back at the students and told them to go out and do something good. smith also, by the way, received an honorary degree from morehouse college and made a small $1 million donation to the college last year. that's remarkable in and of itself. but $40 million in student loan debt wiped t. "the wall street journal" found colleges graduated with 30% more debt. and student death hit record levels in 2018. if student loan debt is the only
5:38 am
way to go to college. you go anyway. i graduated. i worked it off. but to walk away like that? my dad would have been just crying. >> i think i saw articles. one guy had a student in morehouse graduating next year. he said maybe he will come back next year and speak as well. >> parents have been working so hard to pay off all of that>> even just one of the students, just to walk away debt free. >> isn't that amazing? >> amazing>> what a gift to give a graduate. >> i need my khreudz to go ids >> only your male son. it's a male college. >> equal opportunity. thanks for a good story. sharks fans, listen up. the sharks face the ultimate ultimatum in sports. it's win or tkpwgo home. if you happened to be in the shark tank yesterday or watched here on nbc bay area, game 5 was
5:39 am
tough to swallow. they take a 3-2 game lead in the conference final. game 6 is back in st. louis tomorrow night. okay. so, look, we're trying not to jinx anything here with warriors fans. but the nba team has never been 3-0 in a nba playoff series and gone on to lose the series. >> that's what the warriors have in their hip pocket. tonight's game is in portland. that's where they came back to win game 3 saturday night. had some big tv ratings for the conference finals game. one more win and the warriors are back for the fifth year straight. nice to see. >> hoping for the best. looking over here toward the home of the warriors. oakland moving smoothly. hope everything stays good for

5:41 am
>> memorial weekend. let's start to make some plans as we go throughout the week. still off and on showers. at least the temperatures will get milder. notice on saturday there will be a chance of showers nearby. i'm keeping it in there because we will still have some disturbances and storms moving across the region going into the weekend. so saturday we will have a chance of some of the showers moving through. it does look like it stays dry in the tri-valley. our temperatures cool off. notice the drop in the temperatures by sunday. looking at squaw valley this morning, it senior beautiful. and there will still be some rain and snow in the forecast. as we go into this upcoming weekend as well. i will track all of it for you, helping to make memorial day plans. and our temperature trend coming up in three minutes. thanks, kari. coming up, planning on hitting the road this coming memorial weekend. you may experience a little less pain at the pump.

5:47 am
government authorities. mr. trump responded with several tweets this morning calling this news article fake and the "new york times" an enemy of the people. in the tweet he denies the money in those accounts came from russia. it is worth noting deutsche bank itself has been under investigation for russian money laundering. jared kushner's company is completely made up and totally false. the "new york times" continues to create dots that don't connect. over the weekend, a congressman from michigan said he thought president trump should face impeachment. justin amash listed the reasons based on the mueller report. up in of the allegations are new, if you read the report. but it is remarkable because this man is a republican. he didn't get much support from his party. republican senator mitt romney, who held a press conference warning americans not to elect trump, called a mash courageous but now says the time is not now
5:48 am
for impeachment. he did encourage people to read the mueller report. i'm going to make a note here. itch cannot get this touch screen to work. i don't mean to keep this up. i want to talk about iran. also over the weekend, the president threatened to end iran. he said that in a sweet. this is a significant change in policy. the u.s. has repeatedly assured the iranian people, if not with them, it is with their government certainly. not with the entire country's existence. a change in policy. we'll be watching what happens in washington today. you can find me on twitter@scottmcdrew. >> some may be waking up a little sore especially if they did a personal best in bay to breakers. the 108 edition brought tens of thousands of people. they took off for the seven mile trek to ocean beach. some wore ponchos, some wore
