"today in the bay" continues right now. a very good morning to you and thanks so much for joining us. hope you had a great weekend. i'm laura garcia. i'm marcus washington. mike will have a look at the commute in just a bit. but first let's get you out the door with this weather, kari. a lot of rain over the weekend. >> this time you can leave the umbrella at home. >> all right. >> that's going to be a nice little break. before we have to pick it back up and lug it around tomorrow. we start out with a lot of clouds. a live look outside at palo alto. our temperatures are chilly. it feels like it is definitely in the middle of winter when we are -- we know we are getting closer to the end of spring. but right now we have temperatures starting out at 50 degrees. low rise into the low 60s today. we'll talk about the timeline of that next round of rain and,

mike, you're heading through the tri-valley. >> i am, kari. we have more slowing. first of all, what you would expect, 680, 84 through pleasanton, livermore, sunol. also slowing for 880. right here this is a critical connector out of discovery bay. see the red and orange. slowing for a couple of miles down to rudy. slow at 580. no incidents reported. the sensors adjust. i will keep my eye on that for anything unusual. highway 4, as well as the upper east shore freeway. back to you. hundreds of teachers in union city and hayward will hit the picket lines in just about an hour in the first day of strikes for the new haven school district. all schools will still be open today using substitute teachers and anyodministrative staff to teach.

demanding a 10% raise the next two years. they had originally asked for 20% but have since come down. the district says this would cost $20 million. it is offering 3% raise this year and 1% raise next year. a man using a machete-like weapon was taken into custody. >> what did neighbors say. >> i was able to talk to the owner of the home where this happened. it took several hours, but officers finally arrested the suspect at 2:00. it happened at that home in the 2300 block of parker street just before 6:00 yesterday evening. it started with the suspect 40-year-old nathan holman has been a renter for more than five years. the owner told us he and another man trying to move the belongings of a completely different tenant who holman

locked them out. the victim went back in the house and then the victim came out of the house with cuts across both hands and he was bleeding profusely. he told us berkeley p.d. dealt with holman before and knew he was coping with mental health issues and were extremely patient when holman refused to leave the home for several hours. >> they handled it very professionally, very carefully. we waited. and there were no major injuries. there had been previous incidents but not involving physical injury. they were here last thursday night. >> police arrested holman on the third floor deck and he is being held under suspicion. the suspect nathan holman is also in the hospital. he's undergoing a medical examination right now.

live in berkeley, thom jensen, "today in the bay". thank you for that update. 6:03. happening now in southern alabama, a hand mundt is under way after one police officer was shot and killed. two others were injured. the shooting happened last night at a trailer park outside montgomery. officers were responding to reports of a domestic disturbance. a blue alert as officers search for the suspect identified as grady wilkes. the chief of the auburn police department said they will do whatever it takes to bring him into custody. >> just a terrible thing. we're trying to be there with our officers and those families right now. >> again, this is in southern alabama. the two other officers did not suffer life-threatening injuries. 6:04 right now. and in washington, president trump is taking on a member of his own party, going after michigan house republican justin amash after he said trump's

conduct was itch peopleable. craig boswell joins us with the latest. good morning, craig. >> reporter: laura, good morning. good morning, everyone. president trump now going after a fellow republican on twitter over the mueller report. michigan republican justin amash is the first to say president trump behavior is impeachable conduct for trying to obstruct the special counsel's russia investigation. >> well, it's about time a republican stepped to the table. and i wish every republican and democrat, if they have not read the mueller report, read it. >> reporter: in a series of tweets, amash said the president's actions meet the threshold for impeachment and attorney general william barr deliberately misrepresented mueller's report in his summary. president trump fired back on twitter calling him a total lightweight and a loser.

others say the claims lack evidence >> i respect him. i think it's a courageous statement. but i believe that to make a case for obstruction of justice you just don't have the elements. >> there is now bipartisan support for really understanding the seriousness of what is in the mueller report. >> a key house democrat said the amash criticism does not make a bipartisan case. >> what may be pushing us in the direction of impeachment has less to do with justin amash and more to do with the fact that the administration is in a massive obstructionism campaign. >> reporter: democrats are locked in a battle with the white house. craig boswell, nbc news, washington. weather watchers will be closely watching the skies in parts of the country, especially the middle part of the country. that's because a rare weather alert is out in parts of the west of texas as well as oklahoma as they face extremely high risks of tornados. >> today is the highest issued

for that area in two years. in fact, many schools in oklahoma city are just shutting down today in anticipation of those tornados>> over the weekend, two super storm cells came through. this is parts of central texas, spawning multiple twisters and some of the homes were damaged as well. >> not rain and thunder there. but hail. take a look at this. one of our viewers braved all of that wild weather to bring us this from yesterday. and the weekend weather triggering incredible sights. look at the golden gate bridge. lightning video from yesterday. just a beautiful sight. i'm sure it was scary if you were closer by. >> no kidding. nice from a distance there. plame it on the rain as well. it didn't help the fair in antioch. wash-out conditions at times, especially yesterday afternoon.

the germ manager says the heavy rain kept people at home and likely cost many vendors thousands of dollars. i know this weekend i stayed in the bay area. i would just try to find the windows of opportunity to take the dogs out for a walk. come in and it would downpour. go for a quick run, come in and it would rain. >> we had it all to ourselves. a lot of people stayed inside. this is a look at the forecast in free mont. if you're on your way to the warm springs bart station, it will be mostly cloudy and still really cool with low 50s. we'll see it gradually warming today. we are now going to see the temperatures head to the mid to upper six for many of your inland areas. nice to have a break. we know there's still more rain on the way. i'll have more on that and, mike, you're getting help for this report. >> effort that. a little assist. we'll put that to the stats there. just like draymond green.

the first time at $16 a share, rising to almost $24. fast live deals with cloud computing. you remember last week the u.s. announced american companies would not be allowed to do business with chinese telecom company huawei. google says it is limiting the use of its android operating system on huawei phones. it is rare more americans to oss huawei phones. the u.s. government says you really shouldn't. but they are popular overseas. huawei is the second largest maker of phones, in fact, behind samsung. the company accused of close ties to the chinese government. the ceo made a rare statement to the press over the weekend denying his company has ties to the communist government, and denying accusations his equipment helps chinese spy agencies. i'll have the highest ranking officer here in north america on next sunday's "press:here". >> this picture just released

the sun rises over sfo. i'm giving you a look there because that's where we measured an inch of rain the past 48 hours. san jose, getting three-quarters of an inch. look how much rain we got in the north bay at mt. tam. nearly three inches of rain. ben lomond and santa cruz mountains, over 2 inches. petaluma measuring an inch and a half. this is fairly significant. we know that we have had more than double, even triple the normal amounts of rain in a lot of spots. and then as we take a live look at walnut creek, still a lot of water left on the roadways. at least we have a break from the rain today. cool start with low 50s. and we will see the temperatures make it into the mid-60s by early afternoon. it is cooler than normal. we reach up to 65 in napa. a high of 65 in livermore. in morgan hill, reaching 68 degrees. 65 today in palo alto.

so this is a break that storm system moving away. and then the next one is developing and moving closer as we go into the timeline. we see that rain already making it into the north bay tonight shortly after sunset. we will start to see some of the showers, very scattered spfplt this looks like it will be hit or miss rain system off and on throughout the day tomorrow as well. a slight chance of thunderstorms. all of this moving out by wednesday morning. and then another pref break before more rain comes in. it has been pretty soggy. this won't bring as much rain. a tenth to a quarter inch. a live look over lake tahoe this morning. i love this view. they get a fresh coating of snow. there's more snow in the forecast. the potential of another 5 to 10 inches of snow between now and thursday. really amazing to see all of that. even going into the weekend. additional rain and snow there. and we are going to stay busy as well. rain pretty much every other day

inland as our temperatures gradually warm up. and you're checking out a new crash in san jose. >> we'll check. overall your commute showing typical slowing here through the tri-valley. same thing for the east bay. and now building across the san mateo bridge. northbound 280 is the direction coming towards san jose state. crash reported around 11th. that would be a big factor, but we don't see a lot of slowing. one report said one vehicle still in lanes. it's been five minutes. haven't seen a lot of slowing. north 101 does show that. same thing with north 87 approaching curter in the capital expressway. the north bay, not a major problem. a build for the upper east shore freeway. almost a half hour from highway 4 to the backup at the bay bridge toll plaza. no delays for the transit agencies. almost 50 trains running from bart system. great stuff. back to you. all right. thanks, mike.

news making headlines around the nation and the world: the toronto star reports welcome back. at 6:22, some of the news making headlines around the nation and the world. toronto star reporting a canadian man is among five people killed in a honduras plane crash. four americans also died. their identities have not been released. one man was knocked unconscious when a brawl broke out among local leaders at a convention in southern california. the l.a. times said the melee at indian wells happened during a seminar for services like firefighting and law enforcement avengers finally found their kryptonite. john wick knocks them from the top of the box office. john wick 3 grossed $57 million in its debut.

6:23. cameras caught a girl being snatched on a walk outside with her mother. >> this all happened on saturday. that's when 8-year-old celine sabaca was walking with her mother in fort worth. a doorbell camera caught the mom being thrown from the suspect's car. and then eight hours later, police tracked down the little girl and the suspect at a suburban fort worth hotel. they were tipped off by two men who actually went out on their own to find that vehicle matching the police description. >> i wasn't sure. if i thought i wasn't going to find her, i probably wouldn't have gone. >> that is one of the two men who went looking for the car. the suspect, 51-year-old michael webb is facing multiple felony charges. new for you this morning, no joke here. a former comedian is being inaugurated today as the new ukrainian president. >> he high-fived and celebrated and took selfies.

680 sound at sunol, there is a crash in that area. details from chp coming up. thanks, mike. breaking news. we are getting word that ford motor company plans to cut 7,000 jobs, including 900 this week alone. this is a huge announcement. the number of jobs to be cut is actually 10% of ford's global workforce. the michigan-based company says it is restructuring and this is a plan that will save them $600 million annually. ford laying off 7,000 workers. it is not clear which plants in the u.s. will be impacted. 6:31 right now. happening now, hundreds of east bay teachers locked in a bitter labor dispute are walking off the job. it is leaving parents and students concerned about their

education just as the school year is set to wrap up. bob redell jones us in union city to tell us what we can expect when the strikes start in about 30 minutes, bob. >> reporter: right, laura, yes. classes are still on in logan and the union city unified. the strike will begin at 7:00. they will take to the picket lines. the union represents roughly 600 teachers in the district, they announced they would take to the ticket line even in spite of efforts yesterday by both sides to come to an agreement on a new contract. that clearly didn't happen. the district's 12 schools will remain open by using substitute teachers and admin staff to teach. it will be an enrichment day in the classroom, not the typical lesson plan. it's not clear when negotiators will meet again.

stumbling block to an agreement right now is teachers' pay. >> we are very confident that the money is there to kind of have the fajr described. >> we did add some language that gives the teachers an ongoing raise if some money from the state comes through. my understanding is that nhta did not move. >> reporter: nhta is new haven teachers association, the teachers union. they are demanding a 10% raise over this year and the next. they had originally asked for 20% but have since come down. the district said that offer would cost the district $20 million. the district is offering a 3% raise this year. 1% raise the next.

the district are proud that their teachers are the highest paid here in the county. no word on how long this strike would last. the district did point out they would like it to end soon as the school year wraps up in june. all right, bob. another one we will be following closely. authorities have not yet identified the teenage girl who died in a deadly crash early yesterday in concord. this happened a little before 1:00 a.m. on kirker pass road and clear brook drive near concord pavilion. the 18-year-old driver struck a utility pole. the cause is still under investigation. and police in antioch are trying to determine the relationship between a woman found dead in her home and the man detained in connection with her death. her body was discovered at a home on big horn court. they are not indicating how she died but do believe that it is a

homicide. officers are questioning a 32-year-old man also from antioch. so far they are not confirming charges will be filed >> happening today, san rafael leaders debate a plan to be the latest city to ban flavored tobacco. council members are weighing two options, one an outright ban and the other allowing them in adults-only stores. >> if you're thinking about getting a tattoo or know somebody who is, a heads-up for you this morning. the fda is recalling six different types of ink contaminated with bacteria. it is produced by three separate companies, scalpa ink, dynamic color, and solid ink diablo. it may create rashes leading to scarring. it is graduation season. while some commencement speakers

inspired with words, one inspired students yesterday with action. promising to pay off their student loan debt, every single graduate. >> kris sanchez is here to explain the promise. and there is a bay area connection. >> i have never been to a graduation like this one. i probably wouldn't be asked to after this. it could change the graduates' life. it happened at morehouse college where billionaire robert f. smith delivered the commencement address. there was definitely reason to listen to what he had to say anyway. smith did more than give the graduates advice. he gave the graduates financial freedom. >> i have a challenge to you, alumni. this is my class, 2019. and my family is making a grant to eliminate their student loans.

>> all right. you can see the reaction there. after that, the students started chanting mvp. i would say they are on target. student debt hit record levels in 2018. "the wall street journal" found students graduate with 30% more debt than other students. it is estimated that the generous offer is going to cost that grant foundation about $40 million. he is the richest african-american in the country. and his challenge was to the alumni, do something for your class. >> pay it forward. >> but then looked to the graduates and say good out and do something good. >> which is great to follow all the stories. >> i know. everybody on twitter is like we want to see the faces, the moms fainting. people were so shocked by it. >> it's amazing>> we didn't even get those shots. >> what a great demonstration of that much wealth and what he is using it for. what a great example.

>> billions and billions. >> $4 billion? >> $4 billion. this is not a lot for him. but it will change their lives. >> it shows one person can really change a lot of lives. >> completely. you get an education, you get an education. >> we have student debt in our house. how great for those young people. trying to get a leg up on your commute. eastbound direction and disabled vehicle westbound. that is out of lanes. i was concerned because of a report came in from chp. a hazard near foster city side. a pedestrian walking along the shoulder. but you're not supposed to walk across the san mateo bridge. we will check that out. no problems in the last 15 minutes. just the initial report. the commute just building across that section.

pretty typical pattern. the crash we talked about in sonoma on the shoulder i believe around highway 84. backup at the bay bridge at the toll plaza. all the words are important if you just put them in the right order. >> bay bridge backup. >> there you go. >> a little more coffee. it is monday. >> a lot of people had to cancel plans over the weekend and rescheduled because of the rain and rescheduled for this upcoming weekend. a lot of graduations and we're coming up on memorial day weekend. there are some rain drops there. that is something to watch. we go into the next weekend. temperatures will be milder. still cool in san francisco. mid-60s. in the tri-valley, it looks like it will stay dry.

heading over to santa clara, chilly start, low 50s. a slow warmup today. more rain in the forecast coming back tomorrow. i'll talk about when it arrives and also what else is in the forecast in less than five minutes. smooth flow out of the altamonte. thanks, mike and kari. an eight-hour standoff in berkeley is over this morning. a man is in custody accused of using a machete-type weapon to attack the homeowner, and then locked the victim out of his home. he suffered cuts to both hands. one neighbor describes the chaotic scene. >> a few minutes later he came running out of the side of the house. and his happens, both of them bleeding profusely.

and he had been cut by an unusual kind of weapon. >> officers arrested the suspect and said he is dealing with mental health issues. police were called to the home just last week. just in, an alert for stanford students. a female student was approached over the weekend by a security escort service imposter. it happened at 1:00 saturday morning. that's when a blue subaru forester pulled up next to the many two. the driver identified himself as a driver for 5 shore, the security staff hired to protect students. he told the female student he was there to pick her up, but she never requested a ride. and the subaru didn't have any markings indicating it was a 5 shore vehicle. the woman did not get in the car. all 5 shore cars are white with visible markings new this morning, good news if you plan to travel for memorial i da. gas prices are falling.

according to gas buddy, prices have dropped in san jose four cents, averaging $4.09. san francisco, the average is six cents higher. california pays the second highest gas tax in the country. california may be at the mercy of suppliers manipulating the problems. and hitting a nerve with president trump. >> scott mcgrew, the "times" said bank workers found suspicious activity in the president's accounts. >> and the accounts of son-in-law jared kushner as well.

the bankers said software alerted them to suspicious transactions in trump and kushner's account. then it indicated possibly money laundering. they took their concerns to bank managers, but the managers did not pass the concerns onto government authorities. mr. trump responded with several tweets this morning calling this news article fake and the "new york times" an enemy of the people. in the tweet he denies the money in those accounts came from russia. it is worth noting deutsche bank itself has been under investigation for russian money laundering. over the weekend, a congressman from michigan said he thought president trump should face impeachment. justin amash listed the reasons based on the mueller report. mitt romney once called trump a charlatan. he said now is not the time for impeachment. he did encourage people to read the mueller report. i'm going to make a note here. itch cannot get this touch

here are the top stories we're covering on "today in the bay" breaking news to tell you about. ford motor company plans to cut 7,000 jobs by august, including 900 this week. in all, it's 10% of ford's global workforce. ford calls it a re structustruc plan that will save the company $600 million each year. not clear which plants are impacted you can see how they are preparing for the teachers strike. hundreds of teachers in union city and hayward will hit the picket lanes for the new haven school district. all schools will be open today using substitute teachers and administrative staff to teach. they are demanding 10% the next two years coming down from their original demand of a 20% increase. the district says its teachers are some of the highest paid anywhere. it is offering 3% this year, along with a 1% raise next year just in to our newsroom, one
