hanging in there on a wednesday morning. good morning i'm phillip mena >> and i'm frances rivera. a growing chorus in congress is pushing for impeachment. the white house is doing its best to thwart any efforts by democrats to investigate president trump and his administration and it could soon reach a boiling point as more democrats push house speaker nancy pelosi to launch impeachment proceedings. nbc's craig bodswell joins us from d.c. with the latest. at one point spoker pelosi was saying it's just not worth it. >> right frances, good morning. good morning, everyone house speaker nancy pelosi's holding a closed-door meeting with house democratic members this morning it's intended to be an update on the investigations and the oversight, but the growing calls for impeachment could dominate this meeting democrats are angry that president trump blocked the congressional testimony of ex-white house counsel don mcgahn tuesday, ordering mcgahn to ignore a subpoena and democrats are growing more frustrated by the president's

stonewalling of obstruction investigations in the wake of the mueller report so we're likely to hear more calls as we have over the last couple of days for house speaker nancy pelosi to begin an impeachment inquiry. >> the president of the united states of america needs to be impeached. >> i believe that we have come to the time of impeachment i think that at a certain point this is no longer about politics but this is about upholding the rule of law. >> i see a lot more people that believe that impeachable offenses occurred and would like to see an impeachment inquiry. >> reporter: now, after that closed-door meeting this morning the house speaker along with senator chuck schumer, the top two democrats, head to the white house for a meeting with president trump. it should be interesting but they're meeting to talk about infrastructure this is actually their second meeting on a $2 trillion infrastructure deal. but it's unlikely that's going to get any traction because number one, they don't know or

agree on how to pay for it and the tension between the white house and democrats is at such a fever pitch that they may not be able to reach an agreement on much of anything at this point frances, back to you >> certainly watching closely how fired up that meeting's going to be. craig, thank you behind those calls for impeachment is the growing constitutional clash between congress and the executive branch former white house counsel don mcgahn skipping out on his hearing before the house judiciary committee. and democrats are now upping the ante, issuing subpoenas for another pair of former white house employees. nbc's kristen welker has more. >> reporter: the president's former white house counsel don mcgahn a no-show for a house hearing. but there were still plenty of fireworks. >> the president took it upon himself to intimidate a witness who has a legal obligation to be here today >> and we're here again with the circus >> reporter: mcgahn gave 30 hours of testimony to robert mueller, prompting democrats to subpoena him, saying mcgahn is a key witness in their obstruction probe. but the trump administration

argues justice department opinions going back four decades give senior presidential aides like mcgahn absolute immunity from testifying to congress. digging in, democrats subpoenaed hope hicks, the president's former communications director, and annie donaldson, mcgahn's former chief of staff. the president tweeting "the dems were unhappy with the outcome of the $40 million mueller report, so now they want a do-over." all of it a contentious backdrop as president trump hit battleground pennsylvania, turning his fire on former vice president joe biden, a scranton native who moved to delaware as a child. >> he left you for another state, and he didn't take care of you because he didn't take care of your jobs. >> reporter: as for whether robert mueller will testify, three sources familiar with the matter tell nbc news mueller and house democrats have been unable to reach an agreement so far phillip? >> all right, kristen, thank you. hollywood has kicked their boycott of georgia into high gear with two major projects pulling production out of the state.

>> i've seen patients that are already scheduled for their procedures calling in asking whether or not they're going to be able to access care >> reporter: katie caldwell is the coordinator at an abortion clinic in new orleans, one of three in louisiana you don't do a lot of interviews >> no, i don't >> reporter: why >> personal security reasons but i think that now is kind of a tipping point and so because i'm able to i will visibly and vocally advocate for this. >> reporter: there's a large group of people in this country who believe life starts at conception and the taking of that life is murder. why isn't that the case? >> that's a difficult question to answer. everyone's entitled to their beliefs. they are not entitled to infringe upon other people's bodily autonomy. >> reporter: at the louisiana'll -- >> we believe the babies in the womb deserve having the same opportunity to live as all of you. >> reporter: a state law banning abortions as early as six weeks into pregnancy is likely just days away from being passed.

red nose day the campaign to end child poverty returns tomorrow for a star-studded night of fund-raising featuring kelly clarkson, blake shelton, jane lynch and kate mckinnon just to name a few to watch the red nose day special tune in thursday night, 8:00, 7:00 central right here on nbc. now to may major milestone at west point. the academy will graduate more african-american women cadets than it has in its 217-year history. here's nbc's morgan radford. >> reporter: it's a class photo gone viral 34 black female cadets standing on the stairs of west point academy. part of the most diverse class in the school's history.

how does it feel to be a part of that history >> it was just a very overwhelming feeling to see all of our sisters us just standing there in solidarity >> reporter: these women have formed a sisterhood that's also a support system with more than 900 students in their graduating class, black women make up less than 4% >> it hasn't always been pretty. >> when you say it hasn't always been pretty, what do you mean? >> there are some moments here where you feel like oh, am i worthy you know, do i deserve to be here >> i definitely struggled sometimes because sometimes i'd be like the only woman of color or even woman in general in my classes. >> every time i step into a new class i count and i'm like, i guess it's just me today >> reporter: something their classmates also want to change >> we need different perspectives in our army >> that's what makes us better cadets and will make us better leaders. >> reporter: leaders for the next generation. >> what do you hope other little girls who are watching you graduate take away from seeing
