today wednesday, may 22nd, 2019. >> announcer: from nbc news this is "today" with savannah guthrie and hoda kotb live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> hi, everybody, good morning welcome to "today. nice to have you with us on a wednesday morning. our friends in the south and midwest cannot catch a break. >> no. it was hard to watch that video yesterday from oklahoma, dramatic images of people being plucked to safety as the floodwaters rose. >> that's where we start this morning. yet another round of sever weather. new tornados, new widespread flooding and this threat is expanding to the east coast. we are going to check in with al in a moment. first, nbc's kerry sanders joins us from oklahoma kerry, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah this morning emergency officials are warning motorists if they see a flooded road like this, turn around, don't drown overnight one woman, according to emergency crews, drove around a barricade, went down a street like this, didn't realize how deep it was.

her car got swept away, sank in 10 feet of water and, sadly, she drowned. this morning mother nature unrelenting as tornados, strong winds and floods wreak havoc across the south and midwest in arkansas a dramatic rescue. emergency crews saving a woman after strong winds trapped her under downed trees. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: missouri hit late tuesday with a tornado near springfield. bringing ferocious winds and rain a man was rescued from floodwaters in broken arrow, oklahoma, after clinging to a fence post for nearly five hours. >> right now we've got a dramatic rescue going on >> reporter: hours later this woman near oklahoma city holding on for her life after heavy rain caused rapid flooding. these cattle struggling to get to dry land, and homes dangling off the edge of a cliff. the power behind the flash floods evident right here at the union pacific rail lin where the water washed away, the gravel and earth right underneath the tracks. in tulsa, a tornado knocked down

dozens of trees and power lines, entire neighborhoods ripped apart. >> i just thank god we're all okay it's all that matters. we have our lives. thank god for that you can replace your home and your cars, not your family >> reporter: in kansas, cars pulled over as large hail pounded vehicles pounded vehicles. stretches of i-40 shut down after heavy rains. and in st. louis officials from major league baseball postponed tuesday night's cardinals/royals game because of the threat. since the tornado threat began on saturday there have been 133 reported tornados, more than 30 just in the last 24 hours, and today residents in this part of the country are bracing for more tornados, more rain and potentially more flash flooding just like this. >> wow. kerry, thank you. mr. roker is standing by. al, we know that nasty stuff is headed east now. where are the storms right now?

>> we are looking at severe weather. we have got flood watches and warnings stretching through the midwest again. this line of storms pushing through. here are the risk areas that we're looking at. we are talking about right into friday. four states, 7 million people today. this enhanced risk, a few large tornados possible, damaging winds this evening as well. tomorrow afternoon we have got 5 million at risk from amarillo, texas, to kansas city, damaging winds, hail, tornados possible. then to moves to the northeast, for nine states, 42 million at risk stretching from columbia to albany and philadelphia and washington, d.c., and we move into friday. we're back in into the midwest. chicago back to wichita. 7 million people. hail, damaging winds, isolated tornados as well. so we look for heavy rain moving into the upper midwest today. evening storms near kansas city. we move into tomorrow, the storms rumble into the ohio valley, and then intensify into the northeast, continuing pushing on.

here is what we're worried about as far as the rainfall back in the areas where we have already seen flooding. we have a flood threat, numerous rounds of thunderstorms. we could be talking about some areas upwards of 7 inches of rain out of this thing. and as you might imagine it's going to cause big problems for travel. salt lake city, denver, kansas city and st. louis tomorrow thunderstorms. and into the northeast boston, new york, philadelphia, washington, pittsburgh, and detroit. if you are on the roads we are expecting big problems as well stretching from chicago on into boston along i-90, cincinnati to detroit i-75, i-95 d.c. to boston, and denver to washington, d.c. all along i-70. a very volatile situation that's going right into the weekend. >> al, thank you. now to washington where this morning all eyes will be on a closed-door meeting between house democrats and speaker nancy pelosi. they are locked in a clash over whether or not to pursue impeachment hearings against the president.

nbc's peter alexander is at the white house with the latest. good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. house speaker nancy pelosi is behind those closed doors meeting with the democratic caucus. here she was arriving in the last hour. you can see her there on capitol hill. this comes as a growing number of members within her party are pushing for them and other leaders to push for impeachment hearings. this morning, the president hit back claiming when it comes to the mueller report, they want a do-over. this morning, nancy pelosi facing mounting pressure from her own party to begin an impeachment inquiry of president trump. early this morning, they will hold a closed door meeting on capitol hill this morning where impeachment is expected to be the number one topic. >> i believe an inquiry into impeachment is required at this point. >> at a certain point, this is no longer about politics but

this is about upholding the rule of law. >> don't tell me there's not enough to discuss and debate impeachment. >> the president of the united states of america needs to be impeached. >> whies the house speaker has been holding the line, this morning, the "new york times" citing people involved in the investigation is reporting that pelosi has approved an escalation of tactics short of impeachment to try to turn the tables. >> it's about the presentation of the facts. so that the american people can see why we're going down a certain path. >> it comes as house democrats are slapping subpoenas on two new trump targets. hope hicks, the former white house communications director, one of the president's closest confidentants and annie donaldson, who kept copious notes of mcgahn's conversations with president trump accord to the mueller report. democrats are demanding both appear before the panel next month and turn over documents as part of the investigation into

possible obstruction of justice. by the president, his associates and other members of the administration. overnight, hicks lawyer declined to comment. the z move follows mcgahn skipping an appearance on capitol hill after skipping a sa keen na of his own that the white house directed him to ignore. >> the witness must show up. our subpoenas are not optional. we will hold this accountabilitible one way or the other. >> and in an hour from now, the president will sit down here at the white house with pelosi and chuck schumer. this was scheduled for the two sides to talk about how to pay for a $2 trillion infrastructure plan. but late tuesday, the president wrote the democratic leaders that they should pass that trade deal with mexico and canada before diving into anything on infrastructure. then pelosi and schumer put out their own statement basically ignoring the president's demand, snet focussing on infrastructure. the president's allies think he has a shot of getting one piece of legislation passed before 2020 which explains this push on

>> reporter: the altercation leaving one man dead and another seriously wounded. 26-year-old police officer indicted on charges including aggravated manslaughter, aggravated assault and official misconduct. >> the officer's conduct was not consistent with the training that he received. >> reporter: the shooting happened in january when prosecutors say the driver of the vehicle, 46-year-old gregory griffin, fled after a police stop once the pursuit began repeatedly shot at the car even as it pulled away. >> at three separate locations, crespo fired shots at the car. >> reporter: at one point crespo telling his fellow officer -- >> i shot him. i seen the gun he pointed the gun at me >> reporter: the gunfire killing griffin and injuring his passenger, 35-year-old andrew dixon. inside the vehicle police say they recovered a handgun with hollow point bullets dixon, the passenger, is charged with possession of an illegal handgun.

san franc a very good morning to you. it is 7:26. i'm laura garcia. san francisco police discovered a body found hacked to pieces in the outer mission on dem monty. officers were doing a welfare check for a 73-year-old man named benedict chan. there were reports of a bad odor coming from inside the home. officers discovered the remains along with a bloody saw. they have not yet been identified. they are working with the medical examiner to determine the cause of death. let's switch gears and talk about the weather.

the exchange posting a photo of himself holding a package of oreos on twitter also telling representative porter that he was sending some cookies her way. now to a surprising discovery nine months after the death of music legend aretha franklin an attorney says three handwritten wills have been uncovered and they appear to pull back the curtain on her private life and could touch off an estate battle nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer has the details. miguel, good morning. >> good morning. the wills were found in franklin's detroit area home earlier this month, all handwritten according to the estate's lawyer. they lay out how she wanted pieces of her musical legacy, including 18 grammys and her piano, to be taken care of but the discovery appears to not necessarily be good news for her four sons, with two of them already pushing back ♪ r-e-s-p-e-c-t >> reporter: on stage, aretha franklin revealed her soul to

the world. but out of the spotlight the iconic singer was notoriously private. now newly discovered wills appear to provide a glimpse into that life. according to court filings a rep for franklin's estate found the three handwritten documents earlier this month at the queen of soul's detroit area home. they have not yet been authenticated. the latest from march 2014 was found under couch cushions in her living room. the others were from 2010, locked in a cabinet. the handwriting at some point is hard to understand with words crossed out and notes in the margin but throughout all of them franklin asks that many of her belongings be equally divided among her four sons. in 2010, specifically noting her jewelry, music, art, and copyrights franklin also reveals she received $100,000 every year for her recording royalties. in her 2014 will she gives certain homes to her sons. her jewelry and furs to her granddaughters, also suggesting her gowns could be auctioned off or sent to the smithsonian

the wills in court, but he is unsure if they are legal and says two of her sons are already planning to oppose them. franklin's son kecalf is reportedly fighting a plan to sell land next to the singer's home in other court documents. when no will was found last summer questions swirled about the fate of franklin's estate with "forbes" estimating its value at $80 million the singer's friend giving this advice to her sons at her funeral. >> remember your family and friends that have been with you for years because you are about to meet a lot of people that will now want to be your new best friend. >> reporter: a family now figuring out how to move forward with an icon's lasting legacy. >> well, miguel, as mentioned, this will has some private information. it reveals the father of her eldest son clarence and apparently contradicts previous reports. what do you know about this?

tornados and then hail so when you take it all together it's been a really rough couple of days here parts of oklahoma, kansas, and missouri are still under flood warnings this morning after getting 3 inches of rain in the last 24 hours. severe thunderstorms, large hail, and the possibility of tornados are expected today from missouri, western illinois to arkansas, louisiana, and texas since this tornado threat began on saturday there have been 133 reported tornados in the last 24 hours, more than 30. understandably, people, craig, are anxious and the officials are concerned that fatigue may be setting in with all of this, and they are urging people to remain vigilant because there is another threat of more of all of this today craig. >> kerry sanders in stillwater, oklahoma thank you. house speaker nancy pelosi meets with fellow democrats behind closed doors today. a growing number of democrats are calling for an impeachment inquiry to begin against president trump. this is something she has resisted
