other miner issues around the bay, areas eastbound 580 getting away from the bridge. a crash there. over on the shoulder may be a distraction. the slowing shows for construction cruise westbound as well, the bay bridge lighter traffic. we have a few folks on either side, back to you. all if you concerns this morning about a north bay man known as the american taliban. >> he is set to be released from prison today, 18 years released from afghanistan. this is a guy that actually met with osama bin laden. >> reporter: yee, that's right. it's not long ago, he grew up in marin county and attended redwood high school. he is set to be released from a federal prison in indiana at some point today. we are keeping close tabs on when that happened. he became known as the american taliban. that was the name that he was given after he was captured by u.s. forces in the invasion of afghanistan in late 2001.

now, he did fight for the taliban osama bin laden. the sentencing in 2002, he ch r cheerfully renounced terrorism. they say he continued to about date add in prison. warning, he remains a committed jihadist. even after serving nearly 18 years of a 20-year prison sentence. >> my concern with these releases that he has extremist beliefs by all accounts. >> we are taking a live look at the federal prison in indiana. he served two months in military detention. now according to nbc news, we hear the parents have ampgd for him to stay in virginia.

>> we'll continue to follow that. thank you so much, pete. 4:33. happening today, the san francisco man accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 74-year-old woman will face a judge. we first brought you this story yesterday morning on "today in the bay." say they he attacked and dragged the woman into his home near mcclaren park two weeks ago. he then allegedly beat her and raped her for hours before dunk her on the nearby sidewalk. the woman is recovering at the hospital, and there could be more victims. that's what investigators are saying about a different case. this is involving a san carlos man. they say 57-year-old jeff ramzen met up with a 17-year-old. the high schooler said he was 18. but when they met a second time, he told him he was underaged and during that encounter, police say ramzen forced himself on the teenager. >> when you are dealing with an

app like grinder or something like that, you do have to be very cautious. this is not the first case we have had in san mateo county of this nature. we've had some victims seriously hurt. >> ramzen is facing two felony charges. a 49er star is trying to find the person or people that vandalized his brentwood farm. $15,000 is now on the table to track down the vandals that destroyed 2,000 newly planted cherry trees. the trees were ripped right out of the ground so far no arrests. happening today, union city and south hayward teachers returned to the bargaining table after the week long strike continues to go. last night teachers launched on to board meeting. it led to tense moments. they say they plan to pick up talks when the new haven school district resumes after a breakdown in talks last week. teachers are demanding a 10%

raise. the district is offering a 4%. the strike is impacting attendance, the district says only 14% of students showed up for classes. yesterday one school only had four students show up. amazon says they will continue to sell facial recognition technology to government and to police departments despite an increase in pressure to stop. shareholders rejected all proposals surrounding amazon recognition program yesterday. one proposal called for banning the sales of the technology out right. last week, san francisco became the first major city in the u.s. to ban technology by local law enforcement, citing privacy concerns. this morning the debate is still brewing over a foot bridge proposed for south san jose. the pedestrian bridge would connect people from one side of the river to the other. it would be built mind i hiempbd

wall street is set to open up lower as worries among a trade war with the u.s. and china linger over the markets. it cast a shadow over stocks. yesterday the do you dropping over 100 points. reports on people filing for unemployment and new home sales. data the faa says the boeing 737 max will fly again, but there is no time table that grounded those planes since march. boeing finished work on a flight control system that's been implicated in two deadly crashes, it has not scheduled a mandatory test flight. the faa is holding a meeting today with more than 30 global regulation aviators. american, southwest and unite trd the only u.s. airlines that fly the 737 max. we are hoping that will turn to service sometime this summer. walmart, the latest nation's

this is a look at the temperatures. 50s in parts of the north bay. ukiah at 51 degrees. not a bad start. if you are on your way out the door in brentwood, it's going to be right at about 62 degrees eventually dropping down to about 60 around sunrise and then we'll see a lot of sun throughout the day as our temperatures head into the low 70s already by late morning. we're going to be in the mid-70s for the south bay with los gatos reaching 71 and east san jose up to 75 degrees. we'll see some upper 70s and even lower 80s today. so we're back to our spring time weather and the way we should be for the end of may and we're going to reach into the low 70s in san mateo or san francisco. some upper 60s and it was so beautiful yesterday expect more of that today with a breezy westerly wind and in the north bay, even warmer than yesterday,

reaching 74 in sonoma and up to 80 today in ukiah. as we go throughout the forecast, it's going to see a few clouds here and there. going into tonight, we are going to see our skies clearing out, for tomorrow, there will be a few more clouds, a chance of rain close to the area. that's what we are going to see into the weekend. so there will be some rain, potentially some thunderstorms over parts of the sierra. then some of that starts to make its way into the central valley. we'll have to see if by sunday that reaches the south bay as well as the east bay. it looks like we'll have a pretty good chance and in the sierras, heads up, a chance of rain and thunderstorms all throughout the weekend so that may ruin some outdoor plans. check out the sierra snow pack right now. in the central sierra 169% more

have approved a wildfire assistance program and wants it up and running quickly. lawyers for wildfire victims argue pj pnl could pay up to $250 million for people that lost property in 2015 and 2018. they say close to the $235 million the utility will pay for bonuses. pg&e filed for bankruptcy protection in january saying it faces up to $30 billion in wildfire liability. last night in bute county, pg&e announced new power lines will be under ground in paradise. >> that city devastated by the campfire last speaking of a cas helping county schools impacted by the fire. a december committee is approving governor newsom's plan to make sure schools don't miss out on funding because of last attendance, since 1988, they only provide funding for students who attend school, not
