senses, just that note. no real problem. tri-valley fine, crews moving for 580 right around the 13 interchange and a new disabled vehicle may be near that richmond bridges i'll check out reports. back to you. >> thank you very much. we do begin with breaking news on a story we are closely following this morning. nbc news now confirms american taliban john walker lindh has been released from federal prison. lindh was sentenced 17 years ago for fighting with the taliban. he grew up in marin county and served his sentence in any. our pete suratos is following the story. he will join us at the bottom of the hour. more breaking news in the mid-west overnight where at least three people were killed in missouri from a series of powerful tornadoes. we had video from the state capital coming into the newsroom. we will show it to you in a bit. jefferson city there took direct

hit. authorities say three people died about 50 miles west of there in golden city. since tuesday, at least across the plains in mid-west, there have been now at least seven storm-related deaths. people are simply stunned by what happened. >> people are petrified. it's scary. it's always going to be scary. you know. i just honestly i pray that no one was injured. >> search and rescue efforts are under way in jefferson city this morning. and the situation is being called chaotic. especially in the hardest hit areas. we are keeping an eye on this situation. as we get more video and pictures, we will bring them to you. it is 5:03 right now n. washington, the dust is still settling after a dramatic showdown between president trump and house speaker nancy pelosi. the president is now vowing not to work with democrats until they ends their investigation. chris boswell is live with more on the really political back and forth here, craig.

fired near 23rd avenue. it says the suspect barricaded himself in a home for more than 3 hours and then eventually surrendered. our continuing coverage now of a flight over a flag in an alameda town. they are saying no flying over city hall as the country gets ready to celebrate pride month. it comes down following a heated debate. some dublin residents are against flying that flag. they made their voices heard after throwing insults at the gaye community. take a listen. >> i believe at the end of the day there is another letter that wants to be added to tend. >> that is the letter p for pedophile. >> my ultimate goal here was to start a conversation about the lbgtq community here and how we might best serve them. >> you also heard from dublin councilman, he is openly gay and brought that flag proposal forward. he says he will continue that

conversation. 5:06. happening today, bart station is yet to consider a fare. the proposal is $15 fare for an embarcadero stop if san francisco. bart says that's what it would cost to drive and pack or take the train. there will be a more affordable option for lowing in riders. it has been delayed several times. also you get to have your say about the future of a major corridor through the east bay. we are talking about san pablo through richard. the alameda county transportation commission wants to redesign the road to make it safer for all users. one of the three options includes getting rid of most on street parking, reducing auto traffic to one lane only and converting that center lane to buses only to provide a protected bike lane along the

curb. tonight's public meeting is at 6:30 and the community center in berkeley. on the peninsula, talks of adding a people mover, a light trail in the heart of mountain view is kicked into high gear. as we have been telling you, the city wants to connect tech campuses like google on the west side to downtown, the proposal is to put it along shore line boulevard as you see on the maps here. there is a public hearing on that plan tonight at city hall. our east bay dublin is one of the fastest growing cities in america. new this morning, the u.s. census bureau is reporting tub lynn is the fastest growing city with the population increasing nearly 35% last year. more than 63,000 people live in dublin, buckeye, arizona is the fastest growing city. sfarz largest cities, san jose 10, new york city is the largest followed by l.a. by the way, all large cities

return of the 737 max 8. airlines were hoping for summer. he says it's not likely until fall at the earliest. we have been talking about how poorly retailers are doing. nordstrom turned if terrible numbers. target is crushing it. same store sales are way up. looking at the data, it looks like people buy things in three places, the grocery store, target and amazon. sometimes they do their grocery shopping at target. target is doing really well. facebook says it will no longer give its sales people commission for selling political ads to discourage the sales department from using the more is better approach. we are talking legitimate ads for legitimate candidates. mark zuckerberg once dismissed the idea that it's crazy, here we see some of the fake ads from 2016. we now know these worked. facebook cracked down on who gets to buy ads and no longer

takes rubles as payment. the united nations criticizing apple for using women's voices in their personal assistants. with amazon, it's alexa, apple, siri, microsoft, courtana. google doesn't have a name. in siri's case, you can change it to a man's voice if you wish. the companies that were criticized didn't respond, designers in the past pointed to studies that show both genders prefer women's voices and listen more carefully. chris and laura, there will be no woman on the $20 bill next year. treasury secretary steven mnuchin told a congressional committee yesterday the redesign of the $20 bill to include harriet tubman wouldn't happen until 2028 at the earliest, well after president trump leaves the white house, mnuchin says there are design challenges that force the delay until 2028. the "new york times" points out the white house has ordered nasa to go to the moon using spaceships that we haven't

record. getting two inches, and so that's pretty significant. also for santa rosa, this is the fifth wettest may on record getting over four unless of rain. as you see a little more rain in the forecast, you may only add a little more to that, staying in those rankings as we go into the end of the month. that's a live look outside in palo alto, you get out the door, heading up to highway 101. we'll see those temperatures at 54 degrees in the next hour, then a nice little warm-up as we go through the morning. by noon we're at 69 degrees, going into the weekend, we're going to see our skies clearing but still some unsettled weather with a chance of showers and maybe even some storms, mostly staying over the sierra, could make it into parts of the central valley and then also a slight rain chance going into sunday. scattered showers possible. that's something we will have to watch especially as a lot of people make outdoor plans. it looks like we can see

additional rainfall totals, that's maybe a quarter inch of rain with higher chances actually being farther to the south. the south bay as well as the santa cruz mountains, in the forecast, it will be cooling off for the weekend. the next week we are heating up once again into the mid and upper 70s, mike, you are tracking the roads, how are things looking? >> it's a little calm. there was a crash at westbound 80. before you get to the curve, no problems, though, the crash issue out of landon, no injuries, we are showing a little build in the area as well. the rest of costa county, all smooth getting into oakland and alameda counties. we have a crash at 92. anywhere south of there. in towards the san mateo bridge, it should be okay. >> that crash quickly moves to the shoulder as well. back to you. >> thanks, mike. coming up next, how the bay area's own tom hanks is celebrating care givers. >> people taking care of loved ones coping with debill talting

"today in the bay" pete suratos joins you live in marin this morning. we know this name well in the bay area. he actually met with osama bin laden. >> reporter: yeah, that's right this story capturing a lot of headlines nearly two decades ago. we know marin nateer john walker lindh has been released from that prison in indiana he had served nearly 18 years out of a 20-year prison term. he became known as the mental ban after being captured during the invasion in 2001 months after the 9/11 terrorist

attacks. he did fight for the taliban and even then osama bin laden at some point during all this u.s. intelligent assessments indicate he was abdicating serving his time at a federal prison in india with nbc news learning an internal memo had been circulating warning he remains a committed jihadist. >> the problem with his release is he still holds extremist beliefs by all accounts. >> now, upon his release, lindh's use of the internet will be monitored. he is in the allowed to travel. even though he reportedly wanted to move to ireland. his parents plan to relocate him to virginia. at least as of this point it doesn't appear he will be coming back to marin any time soon. reporting live, pete suratos, for "today in the bay." it is 35:33, happening today, the san francisco man accused of kidnapping i should

say and sexually assaulting a 74-year-old woman will face a judge. we first brought you this story yesterday morning on "today in the bay." police say 47-year-old manuel ama dor dragged the woman into his home in mcclaren park two weeks ago. he then allegedly beat and raped her for hours before dunk her on a nearby sidewalk. the woman is rovg at a hospital. there is a new movement on a major housing development that is now one step closer to becoming a reality in contra costa county. but a number of residents aren't too happy about it. today we are live in brentwood. you have been talking to a thought of folks there. why are they upset? if we need the housing, why don't they want it? >> reporter: they're worried about the increased traffic and the threats we put on the infrastructure here in brentwood. we are talking about the proposed vineyard that would be built in this empty field behind me. take a look at the map we put on

your tv screen. black hall nunn partners. they want to build on 880 acre parcel of land with 80% of the homes designated for seniors. but in order for the city to accommodate this project. they need approval for the brentwood limit line. they need more than 3500 signatures on the november ballot. they got the signatures in the past week or so the opposition has formed a group called alliance for a better brentwood. you can see the alliance right there on the tv screen. they argue now is not the time for this development. brentwood needs to see how the infrastructure can handle the hundreds of other homes approved and awaiting construction. they worry about the noise and bad air quality brought on by this 20-year construction project. they are concerned about the extra stress on the fire district, which is deeply under funded and as i mentioned the

park. harm reduction coalition already serves oakland and san francisco. new this morning, more than $100 million coming to victims of wildfires sparked by pg&e power lines. the bankruptcy case approved the wildfire assistance program. they want it up and running quickly. warriors for wildfire victims argue pg&e could pay up to $250 million to help people who lost property. they say that is close to the live million they will pay in bonuses for its employees. pg&e filed for bankruptcy protection in january saying it faced up to there are 30 billion in wildfire liability. in the meantime, in bute county, pg&e announced new power grounds will be under ground in paradise. >> that city was devastated by the campfire last november. a quarter to 6:00 right now. a series of setbacks by the
