bay. one lane might be affected by a bakery. i will get more detail coming up in another few minutes. back to you. >> thank you very much. 6:00 right now. we do begin with breaking news on a story we are closely following this morning. nbc news now confirming american taliban and bay area native john walker lindh has been released from federal prison. lindz h was sentenced -- hilindh grew up -- lindh grew up in marin county. pete suros wiatos will have a l story at the bottom of the hour. we get our first look at the series of deadly tornadoes in missouri. this is from the state capital. jefferson city took a direct hit. power lines are down. emergency crews are out there. trees knocked down by this massive storm. so far no death has been reported in missouri's capital

word. >> both sides in this dispute need to take their meds and sit down and negotiate like adults, not like kids in the back of a minivan fighting. >> reporter: on the battle over financial records, a judge ruled two banks can hand over the president's documents. >> i anticipate we will see the exact same kind of decision when the house goes to enforce the request for trump's tax returns. >> reporter: it's a part of the investigations into alleged foreign influence on u.s. elections. two federal judges have now ruled that trump financial documents must be turned over to house committees. chris, laura. back to you. >> all right. thank you very much, craig. it is 6:04 right now. police investigating a deadly shooting in east oakland. it hand a little before 7:00 last night on wells street near 78th avenue. the victim has not been identified. elsewhere in oakland at about the same time, police were engaged in the standoff. police say it started about 6:00 p.m. with reports of shots fired

on foothill boulevard near 23rd avenue. they say the suspect barricaded himself in a home for more than 3 hours, then eventually surrendered. happening today, bart's board is expected to approve a fair cost for the yet to be opened various bart station in north san jose. the proposal on the table is $15 a fair for round-trip to the embarcadero stops in san francisco. it might sound like a lot of money. bart says that's what it will cost a driver to park there and take a train. it will be more affordable for lowing in riders, the opening date for the new station has been delayed several times. no word yet on when it is actually going to finally open. it is 6:05. also today, you have to get to the north bay about the future of a major corridor in the east bay. we are talking san pablo avenue near oakland and richmond. the transportation commission wants to make it safer for everyone, one of three

options includes getting rid of most on street parking, reducing auto traffic to one lane and converting the center lanes for buses only while providing a protected bike lane along the curb. tonight's meeting is at 6:30 tonight at the francis community center i should say in brooklyn. on the peninsula, talks of adding a people mover or maybe a light trail in, light rail in the heart of mountain view and it's kicking into high gear. we have been reporting the city wants to connect tech campuses like google on the west side to downtown. the proposal is to put that transit line along shore line boulevard as you see here on the map. you can go to city hall if you want to weigh in. flying the pride flag at an alameda county house. several leaders are saying no as the country gets ready to celebrate pride month next month. the decision came down following a heated debate.

some dublin residents are against it proceeding insults at the gay community. take a listen. >> i believe at the end of the day, another letter wants to be added, the letter p for pedophile. >> my ultimate goal here was to start a conversation about the lbgtq community here and how we might best serve them. >> you also heard from dublin councilman who is openly gay and brought the flag forward. he says he will continue the conversation. news out of dublin this morning. it is now one of the fastest growing cities in the united states. new this morning, the u.s. census bureau is reporting dublin is the 11,000th growing city with the population increasing nearly 5% last year alone. more than 63,000 people now call dublin home. buckeye, arizona, outside phoenix is the fastest growing city. i guess you better learn that name. as far as largest cities go, san

francisco 15, new york city is the largest and fastest growing city followed by l.a. but all large cities lost residents last year and houston is close to taking over chicago's third spot. so our populations are shifting. 6:08. happening today, graduation ceremonies continue at san jose state university. today the school of business and the college of health and human scientists will hold ceremonies. tomorrow's commencement is also there. all tolled, 6800 students are graduating. congratulations to them. >> a lot of high school graduates this weekend, too. we are hoping for good weather. >> it will be good on saturday. we also have nice weather out there. the first graduation starts at 10:00 a.m. so it's going to be beautiful. nice and cool. fought really all that warm with our high temperatures today reaching the low 70s. i think that's perfect. we will see also some mid-70s for parts of the south bay. up to 75 in mill petas.

happy on wall street. headed for more red arrows because of the trade war. the head of the faa says don't put a salen dhar date on returning the 737 max 8s, airlines are hoping for summer. the faa says not likely to fall earlier. we have been talking how poorly retailers are doing, nordstrom turned in terrible numbers. looking at the data, it looks like people buy things in three places, the grocery store, target and amazon, sometimes they do it at target. target is doing really well. facebook says it will no longer give its sales people commission for selling political ads in order to discourage the sales department using the more is better approach. we're talking legitimate ads for legit mad candidates. the redesign of the bill for har

ret tubman won't happen until 2028 at the earliest, well after president trump leaves the white house, even if he wins a second term. mnuchin says design challenges forced the delay until 2028. the "new york times" points out the trump white house has ordered nasa to send a new mission to the moon using new spaceships, part of which we haven't designed and do that by 2024. the treasury won't be able to change a bill until four years after that. the united nations is criticizing amazon, google and apple for using women's voices in their personal assistants saying it's sexist. with amazon of course it's alexa, microsoft core on the na, google doesn't have a name. it is fe fail mail n. siri, you can change it to a male voice if you wish. they didn't respond but in the past they said people prefer women's voices, studies by the air force say people listen to

of days, now moving off to the south and east. so that's a problem for vegas and parts of southern california. now as we get a live look outside, take a look at this beautiful view of the golden gate bridge. we know it's been a wet may. so let's talk about how much rain we've measured and in san francisco, at the airport, we've gotten two inches of rain, that makes at this time third wettest may on record and also for santa rosa, we're setting some records here, it looks like right now where we stand we're at fifth in the rankingsing over four -- rankings, measuring over four inches of rain. this is our forecast for dublin getting you out the door. we'll be at 53 at 7:00, throughout the day mid- to upper-60s, at 1:00, we're at 72 degrees, just perfect. we will be breezy, there will be some rain nearby the region. it looks for the most part it

stays out of the weekend. things will change on sunday as we start to see more widespread rain and snow in the sierra, that could push across the valley into the south bay as well as the east bay. so we're watching out for those rain chances late on sunday, no need to cancel the plans, it looks scattered and light. this will not be an all day washout. we are still seeing snow coming down, that's a look at north star. now our se ira, snow pack around lake tahoe are at 169% of normal. we'll have some additional white snow between now and memorial day. mostly for some of our higher elevations, another 5 to 7 inches of snow. really good to see that. spotty showers here. it will cool off. we won't stay in the upper 70s. we come down to the mid- to upper-60s for the holiday weekend. it warms up again early next week by tuesday and wednesday and when we see highs, upper 70s, especially on wednesday.

and mike it looks like the commute is a little wider right now. >> it does look like that. we have a monday holiday for schools and businesses, graduations, anywhere approaching that spring. we're looking like some folks might be planning out of the office meetings today and tomorrow, getting a head start. >> that is the morning commute, very mild, south bay, slowing. no problems for the tri-valley. 680 needs a little slowing out of pleasanton. dublin interchange is great. i checked there, only the slowing, they come down to one lane, no surprises. unfortunately you do have that slowing out of brentwood towards 580. over here towards the bay bridge. a little slowing, not only the halfway mark. slow tore richmond, a dip in berkeley as well, the backup at the bay bridge to him plaza, look at this, near me, we have these cash lanes starting to ease up the morning traffic flow. we will see another burst of traffic 45 minutes to an hour,

6:30 right now. we do begin with breaking news in the last 90 minutes or so american news reports american taliban john walker lindh has been released from federal prison. pete, this is a guy who thought, met with the taliban and osama bin laden. >> reporter: yeah, that's right. >> that story grabbing a lot of headlines. a couple decades ago. we are talking about marin county native john walker lindh he was released from a federal prison in indiana in the past couple hours, serving nearly 18 years for that 20-year prison term. he became known as the american taliban after being captured by u.s. forces during the invasion in afghanistan in 2001 months after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. he met and fought with osama bin laden at some point in all this we are learning u.s. intelligence showing he was still advocating for global

jihad, serving at that global prison in indiana. an internal memo was circulated warning he remains a committed jihadist. >> with the release he still holds extremist beliefs by all accounts. >> reporter: now lindh use of the internet will be monitored upon his release. he wanted to travel to ireland upon release. his parents plan to relocate him to virginia so at this point it appears he will not be coming back to marin any time soon. reporting live, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thanks for the latest. nbc pete williams also lanizing this story this morning. you can watch more on this on the "today" show right after "today in the bay." a major housing dwomd is one step closer to becoming a reality in the east bay. a number of residents are not too happy about it. bob. tell us why some folks are still

upset. >> reporter: well, chris, we're worried about the possibility of increased traffic and the stress this could put on the infrastructure here in brentwood. we're talking about the proposed vineyards at deer creek in this field behind me here. you look at this snap we will put on the tv screen. blackhawk nunn partners want to build on this 880 acre empty parcel of land located east of deer valley road with 80% of the homes designated for seniors, in order nor the city to accommodate this project, they need voter aproposal golf to the brentwood limit line. he tells us he is up to more than the 3500 petition signatures needed to put it on the november ballot. the opposition formed a group alliance for a better brentwood. you cannee the website on the tv screen. they argue no you is not the time for this development.

brentwood needs to first see how it's infrastructure can hand tell hundreds of other homes already approved and construction they worry about the noise and bad air quality that was brought on by this 20-year construction project. they're concerned about the extra threats on the fire district which is deeply under funded. as i mentioned, they worry about increased traffic in the area. >> this property will be developed in brentwood and antioch and after someone else. with us in brentwood, you have a history. you know what we have done there. what we will do there. if it's not us, it will be somebody else. i'm not sure what that will bring. >> our organization's goal is to make this parcel the community separator between antioch and brentwood to remain the county agricultural dry farmland until such a time we need to expand. >> reporter: blackhawk nunn has been developing here in brentwood 30 years. they say of the 880 acres 225 would remain permanent open

space. the project would send millions to the under funded fire district and build a road around heritage middle school and could supply safety improvments on deer valley and invited people to go to other developments built if town during peak hours. they say you will see the traffic is not as bad as it likely will be. now, the city of brentwood is tab lating the signatures f. the voters were to approve such a measure in november and the city gave us approval, blackhawk nunn believes it will be a few years before they start moving dirt. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." day four in the new haven district teacher's strike. the school board meeting turned contentious last night according to east bay times. at one point the superintendent reportedly walked out. parents had some less than kind words as well.

union leaders are supposed to pick up contract talks with the district today. the district says only 14% of students showed up for class yesterday. one school only at four students show up. happening today, memorial day travel officially begins, as mike says, some folks have the day off tomorrow and early release. despite high gas prices, people will hit the road in record numbers. aaa estimates 5 million he will hit the road in the golden state. airports will be busy, too, as we apply that sfo early this morning, nearly one-half million californians will fly during the holiday, a huge jump from last year. >> see how traffic is looking out there right now, mike. >> right now i froze my map clicking too many times. it's got the important part. we have the get away traffic. right now, this just popped up, a traffic alert for westbound 80

especially during the afternoon. as we can see, some off and on rain, especially for the inland areas. so i'll be keeping you up to date on that saturday is looking perfect for carnivale and parade and of course the grand parade on sunday in san francisco so there may be a few showers, but on saturday, we're going to see mostly sunny skies. we also have the bay area kidfest happening in concord. concord will be a busy spot all throughout the weekend. we got concerts and also a kidfest happening so saturday is the day to get out there and enjo it, if you are going to the sierra for the long holiday weekend, expect squall valley to have times of rain and snow, those temperatures staying on the cool side in the low-to-mid-40s. for russian river valley, it's going to be a little cool to start. then our best day of the weekend will once again be saturday. by sunday it's cooler. we will see more clouds and a slight chance of rain, santa

york has passed a bill.. that the governor is expected to sign.. that would allow the state to turn trump )s state tax returns over to congress. the taxes.. then bank records.. the accountant )s records.. president trump has resisted showing anyone any of those things. nancy pelosi says the president is trying to cover up. checking the facts.. there a number of examples of the president trying to stop unfavorable information from getting out. on top of trying to quash all those records.. we know the president wrote a check to cover payments to stephanie clifford.. . he used several explanations to describe the trump tower meeting. ..even writing a description of the meeting - that he himself had not attended. the president had several explanations for firing jim comey. mgahn says the president told him to lie about his order to fire bob mueller.
