carrie tergin, good morning to you, thank you so much for your time as i understand it, you have been going door-to-door there to assess the damage, to check on the residents there in jefferson city what are you seeing on the ground >> we are seeing a lot of devastation on the ground, a lot of trees down, power lines down, homes and apartments with roofs and walls missing, things like that it is pretty devastating and that's of course in the dark of night. there's a lot of those areas that have no power, but now as the sun is beginning to rise, we'll be assessing the situation even more. >> there were reports a short time ago that there were people who were trapped there in jefferson city is that still the case are there people trapped >> not that i'm aware of initially when the tornado first hit, it is my understanding that there were some people in some apartments that they were rescuing and getting out, but it is my understanding at this time that they have located everyone

and at this time, it sounds like the injuries are small and very thankful that there are no major injuries reported as of yet. we're very thankful because when you see the amount of devastation, it's really pretty significant, and it's a wide area of the city as well. >> this nasty twister, as i understand it, it struck in the middle of the night. how much advanced notice were you guys able to give residents there? >> actually, the warning sirens were sounding, so there was some advanced warning and in fact, there was a lot of media coverage in between that, and the warnings people were really checking on their neighbors and taking shelter and i think that's why so far we have not had reports of serious injury because people were heeding the warnings and it struck around after the 11:00 hour, right around 11:30 time

frame, so it was late at night. >> is the worst over or should folks in jefferson city brace for more >> we certainly hope so. we are dealing with flooding we had an emergency declaration yesterday due to significant flooding on the missouri river and closed the jefferson city memorial airport, so we know we're having to deal with flooding already, and now this was unexpected but everybody's come together. the jefferson city police department and fire department and public safety agencies from all around mid missouri have really converged here. all hands on deck, they are working this working the flood but now this was totally unexpected but they are all working together, and i've never seen a room working so hard to keep our community safe so we're in good hands here. we're going to do this >> our thoughts and prayers and

hidden heroes, what would it be? some time off? >> i need a vacation >> you need a vacation >> these spouses, mothers, fathers, siblings, and friend are the new front line for our nation's veterans, providing $14 billion a year in voluntary, uncompensated care senator elizabeth dole witnessed the challenges facing military care givers firsthand when her husband, bob dole, was admitted to walter reed in 2011 >> we got to know many of them very well, and they were scared. they were really worried what's going to happen when we leave the hospital >> she created the elizabeth dole foundation. >> our nation's leaders must stand with america's military care givers. >> determined to raise public awareness about the care giving crisis. >> i had been given a mission. you have seen it, go do something about it wake up, america. >> then in 2016, she launched the hidden heroes campaign to give military care givers a voice, and resources to help

them adjust to their new normal. >> every care giving story begins with an individual who raises their hand to serve our country. sometimes in the course of carrying out that duty, they fall and when that happens, their care giver, often the love of their lives is the person there to lift them up off the ground >> and we are joined now by senator elizabeth dole who started this good work good morning, senator. >> wonderful to be with you in indianapolis. >> tell the story of how you discovered this need. >> well, you know, my husband bob was hospitalized at walter reed medical center in 2010. and he was there for almost 11 months and i got to know all of these young care givers, their spouses, mothers, dads, sisters, taking care of the wounded warriors and it was incredible what i saw i mean, they were really suffering.

they had no idea where to turn for help their worlds were turned upside down really, and so my heart went out to them, and you know, when you see something like that, you're compelled to go do something about it, and so that's when i started the foundation, and we were able to get wonderful research, two years with the rand study, which indicated there are 5 1/2 million care givers caring for the wounded at home. >> the term care givers would make some people think of doctors and professionals and they're technicians, but care givers in this parlance is about families, like you said. >> that's right. these are the young spouses, the mothers, the dads, the siblings, caring for the wounded warriors. >> we have bright kids, they're part of it as well. >> that's right. absolutely. >> senator dole, if we had one thing that we could say people could do because we have good hearted people watching and they're going to want to put

their arms around these care givers, what's the need, how can they help? >> you know, the small acts of kindness can nmake a real difference for example, go help mow a lawn. take a good dinner over to the family take the children out for an event or sit with the wounded warrior and let the care giver get a little respite i think it can make a lot of difference if we just go to hidden heroes.org and find a lot of ideas for what can be done. >> so much of what you do with the foundation is connecting those people, number one that have a need and also have an ability in order to help sometimes it's part of being part of a car pool so they can get to the community college on time. >> it's so important that we alert america. it's like america is going to sleep to this, to think they're 5 1/2 million care givers, that need help. in many instances, bathing, feeding, dressing the wounded, they're providing medication,

medical injections, they're trying to prevent triggers that set off an emotional response that can last for days, and they're handling all of the household functions and most of them are raising children. there's a desperate need here. >> i'm never going to interrupt senator elizabeth dole for the rest of my life. i was just talking to a couple here celebrating their 38th wedding anniversary and the wounded veteran cannot come into the room because it would set off too many complications from what he suffers, so that's the type of burden that a lot of these families are facing. >> let me give you an example, steph smith from georgia is one of my care givers fellows, we have fellows from all 50 states who are chosen each year steph's husband tom has post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury, and steph says, you know, tom is constantly talking about how to commit suicide he is talking about it he's looking for ways to do it and at one point, he did make an attempt. on the way to the hospital, he

was pleading with staff, he said please just let me go. i have already died in iraq, and then there was a bad fire in their house, and she said i was thinking about, yes, where are we going to sleep tonight, and is the insurance going to cover all of this damage, but primarily i was thinking is this going to set off suicidal ideation in tom, that's what they're dealing with in many cases. >> i imagine that kind of story being repeated again and again we have 5 1/2 million care givers, our nation's veterans need them, and we need to support the care givers and wrap our arms around them senator dole, thank you for starting this. >> absolutely, my privilege. >> we're going to continue it, for the moment, we'll send it to al, we've had a little bit of weather here al, what do you see, i hope you have sunshine coming. >> we don't have sunshine, but the skies are brightening and finally, things are clearing up. i think we're going to get our concert in with sheryl crow. take a look. you can see how wet it is here,

live at the indianapolis motor speedway the crowd is ready because sheryl crow is going to take the stage in a moment. through our work with the elizabeth dole foundation, tom and i have been meeting men and women and children supporting military veterans right here at home while they often don't ask for help, it doesn't mean they don't really need it as well we are shining a light on them, sharing their inspirational and moving stories stories of unconditional love, of courage and triumph and yes, sometimes heart ache and pain as well >> for many veterans, once they return from the front lines, another battle awaits them at home beside them, fighting with them, and for them, spouses, children, families, these are the hidden heroes joe dorsey, a purple heart recipient was injured in an ied explosion while serving in iraq in 2004. he came home with shrapnel wounds, head and neck injuries,

and ptsd. >> they come home, welcome home parade, a lot of fanfare that goes along with it and life goes on for a lot of veterans and spouses, you're kind of left with those hidden moments and hidden experiences that maybe you don't share with everyone. a public schoolteacher, andrea sometimes uses her sick days to care for her husband as he continues to cope with the visible and invisible wounds of war. >> the world goes on whether you're having a tough day or whether you're not, so when you decide that you don't have any other choice, you have to keep going. i have to just take on these challenges as they come, and i am strong enough to do this and if there's going to be a military care giver, then i'm going to be the best one that i ever could be. >> her husband is in awe of his wife, calling andrea his rock as she picks him up on his toughest days. >> for her to stand by my side and be as supportive as she has, it means more than anybody will ever know. >> just a few weeks after her

husband andrew's fourth deployment to afghanistan, amy jenkins got a call she will never forget >> the only words i heard were his broken voice and it said, hey, baby, i'm alive but. >> that was heart wrenching. heart wrenching. >> an enemy attack left andrew with a traumatic brain injury. his condition forever changing their lives. >> all of the deployments before that had taken little pieces but this one took -- it took his spunk, and i miss him. i've had to learn, i have to fall in love with him all over again. >> amy doesn't have to look far to find support in taking care of her husband their three children have become care givers, too >> my children encompass what it means to love without boundaries when they notice that i am stressed, they will try to pick

up the slack there is nothing that my children would not do for their father. >> her husband knows how lucky he is to have them by his side. >> i owe her my life i do the amount of stuff i've put her and the kids through, not just through deployments, but through the after math of deployments and all the demons that you face, and all the struggles. >> so make sure, eat healthy today. >> robert greer senior served in the air force in the korean and vietnam wars, reversing roles, his son robert jr. became the primary care giver for his 86-year-old dad when his late mother was diagnosed with alzheimer's. for military care givers, there are no days off. >> it is a labor of love it's almost like having children it's the hardest job you'll ever love, you know there's constantly curve balls that happen with us. >> his father is eternally grateful for his son's selflessness.

>> son, i love you you mean tremendous to me. thank you. >> wouldn't have it any other way. >> thank you >> once strangers with familiar stories, now finding comfort in one another. >> and we are so happy and honored to have andrew, dorsey, rob greer, and amy jenkins with us now guys, good morning. >> good morning. >> a lot of tears. it's so emotional. i mean, andrea, it's really as tom has said before and i think it's so profound, this is an act of love. >> absolutely, it's a great service, and i'm just honored and happy to do it >> do you think of yourself as a care giver >> not really. i think i, you know, i just do what anyone would do if you love someone and you want what's best for them you step up and do what needs to be done. >> you have like nine full-time jobs, you are a teacher a homemaker, you've got kids, how do you get through just the nuts

and bolts of a day that has hundreds and hundreds of duties? >> i think you just try your best, you put a smile on and you find the good in the situation, and you do what all of us do, we just keep going. >> amy, one of the things that care givers say a lot is that it can be isolating and that you can feel very alone. have you gone through that yourself >> absolutely. the most powerful words i've ever heard are me too and that's what i've gotten with this fellowship through elizabeth dole foundation is me too. >> there's something about it, right, rob, when you have that connection that you realize that you're in your own army, the army of care givers, reaching out and taking care of our veterans who we so treasure. >> absolutely. it's just a treasured resource that i wish all care givers could have but this is part of it we're only three people out of over 5 1/2 million care givers so it would be fantastic to, if

you guys could take this on the road and see those other stories of people because, you know, there's millions of people out there. >> what other raceways, daytona. the connection that you talk about is just so key no one wants to be going through a tough time alone, and you can meet people, of course, from across the country but there's also folks that literally live just a couple of corners away from where you are i think that's key also, the work of hidden hoes is making sure that those people who have something they can contribute, be it their expertise at a job that they have or as elizabeth dole here says, a kid with a lawn mower can make a big difference in somebody's life on every other saturday. >> that's difficult for care givers we find it difficult to ask for help so if people could offer that help in their area of expertise, that would be fantastic. >> what's just one thing, a s p simple thing that you could get

from the elizabeth dole foundation, if you could have next tuesday, boy you'd really like to look forward to blank, what would that be in your life as a care giver? >> that's a tough question >> boy, i don't know, i don't have a good answer. >> a break >> a break >> yes >> we heard that a lot yesterday. >> over and over again >> a wife or a girlfriend or grandparents were saying, boy, i would like to have an afternoon off. >> but there are resources that can help it's just getting to those resources. >> what's it been like amy, not only are you a care giver, you're a wife, too, and your kids, we talked about it, they step up and carry that burden as well, and it's really, it's the whole family is really transformed when you're caring for one of our wounded heroes. >> i think it's so important to also be his wife but sometimes it's hard because there's nothing sexy about here, honey, take your medicine you have to love fiercely but

also care for them >> what about you, andrea, what have you learned that you can share. there's got to be care givers who are watching right now, and hearing those powerful words that you said, me, too i'm there too, and practical needs, we kind of talked about it, but let's say you're home and you're thinking, okay, i got a neighbor, they might be afraid sometimes i think we're afraid to reach out we're afraid to say do you need help, we don't want to be presumptuous how would you advise people to approach someone in their community? >> that's a hard question because we're military children, many of us, and it's like, okay, get out of the way, i got this so just know that you don't have to do it all you don't have to do it all. >> there's the visible wounds that anybody could see because there's a wheelchair or there's a ramp in the house or a special

vehicle but there's also, i met two of the husbands here and if i saw them at a drugstore, i wouldn't think they were any brand of a wounded veteran that's come back that needs a specific type of care. >> right >> that must be one of the added burdens because it just looks so normal and yet it's far from that. >> right he looks healthy. >> right >> i hope people are looking closely after our time together and i hope we're able to shine a light, but this work is just beginning. hiddenheroes.org, elizabeth dole would kill me if i didn't say that early and often because there are a lot of resources that are out there. we're going to take a turn and we're going to have some fun okay, i see that the clouds have parted i think we're going to get a concert. are you guys ready to have a little fun out there. >> yes. >> we're going to do that. for the moment, we'll send it over to al and see what's what. >> thank you, savannah the clouds are starting to part.
