4:00 pm
damian trujillo: hello and welcome to, "comunidad del valle." i'm damian trujillo, and today, youth mariachi competition. plus the san francisco international arts festival on your "comunidad del valle." male announcer: nbc bay area presents "comunidad del valle" with damian trujillo. damian: we begin today with the preservation of our waterways. aida fairman is with the city of los altos here to speak on behalf of watershed watch and the importance of keeping our waterways clean. welcome to the show. aida fairman: thank you so much, damian, for this opportunity. damian: thank you. now we--i want to show a video because we have a video of a car wash. and tell us why this is significant, the video that we're watching here of the car wash. aida: yeah, it's very important that the residents take their cars to be washed at a carwashes to-- car washes because the water from that--
4:01 pm
from the carwashes gets treated in the sanitized sewer system. but if they wash their cars on paved areas like parking lots, driveways that are impermeable, the water would just flow and pick up with it dirt, metals, and other pollutants that go into the storm drain system. damian: and so, this is something i didn't think about because if i'm washing my car on my driveway and i'm wiping the greasy wheels on my car, that grease has got to go somewhere, that's what you're saying. aida: yes, that would be going into the storm drain system that has no filtration or treatment. and the water, these pollutants would end up in the local creeks and the san francisco bay. and this has impact to the flora and fauna. damian: you've--your agency has been very proactive in getting the word out. did something happen, are things getting worse? why are we so much more, i should say, involved with preserving the waterways? aida: yes, we want to be proactive to help the environment now and in the future because even though
4:02 pm
people think that just a little bit of pollutants and a small amount gets into the local creeks and the san francisco bay, they start to accumulate and impact the aquatic life and the water quality. damian: and so, you have a special deal with one of the local carwashes here because, again, you want people to not wash their cars in the driveway because of where the remnants goes. so, you have a deal with one of the local carwash companies. aida: yes, watershed watch has partnership with three partners at seven locations in the south bay. there's some upcoming events. the first one would be may 29, that one is going to be held from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. at the delta queen classic carwash. the second one is going to be held on june 12, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the montague premiere carwash. the third on is on june 29--on june 19 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the capital premiere carwash. and the fourth one, it's on june 26 from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.
4:03 pm
at the robert's field classic carwash. damian: and so, if you go to those, you get a discount card. aida: fifty percent discount on those special events. it's a two-hour special event at each location. but also the residents can print out a watershed watch discount card that they can use all year round for discounts at various carwash locations. damian: talk about why it's important for these carwash companies to say, "yes, we want to partner with you and give you this deal." aida: yes, it's very important that they-- the partnership, and so, all of us together, we can do our part and encourage the residents to go wash their cars there instead of in their driveways or on permeable surfaces because they contaminate the local creeks and the san francisco bay. so, i think if all of us do our part, we can together help the environment for today and the future generations. damian: yeah. i've asked all the questions.
4:04 pm
i'm sure there's something that you want to say that make sure you get across, what is that? aida: yeah, in addition to car washing, there are other activities out there that can also be a threat to the water quality in the local creeks. for example, power washing of buildings and paved areas, you know. and also the mobile cleaners, for example, the ones cleaning-- carpet cleaning, or steam cleaning, or pet care service, they also need to be especially careful to cover the storm drains to protect the storm drain system. also, if you're hiring a mobile cleaner, the best thing to do is to go to the website of basmaa, that stands for bay area storm water agencies association, and their website is www.basmaa.org, basmaa.org. and you'll find a list of mobile cleaning companies that have
4:05 pm
been trained with adequate cleaning methods that are good for the environment, so that's very important. they will know that only water, you know, from storm water is allowed in the system. damian: that's a-- it's a very important issue. i mean, that's why you're here, and it's more important than i realized. there is a website for more information on mywaterwatch-- watershedwatch.org, and also the 1-800 number for more information to find out more about the carwashes and everything that they have taught. well, thank you for educating us here on the show, appreciate it. aida: thank you so much, damian, for this opportunity. have a great day. damian: thank you, you too. and up next here on, "comunidad del valle," the san francisco international latino arts festival, stick with us. it's a revolution in sleep. the sleep number 360 smart bed is on sale now during our memorial day sale. it senses your movement, and automatically adjusts to keep you both comfortable. it even helps with this. so you wake up ready to hit the ground running. only at a sleep number store. save $1,000 on the new queen sleep number 360

4:07 pm
theater, music, and dance performances in the fort mason center for the arts and culture in san francisco. damian: mm-hmm, so they're coming from where? i mean, when we're talking about international, what are we talking about? alba: yeah, we have 50-- this year, we have 50 performances from companies from the bay area and also 13 companies from all over the world, including czech republic, spain, argentina, taiwan, japan, and much more. damian: well, i mean, you come to san francisco and nobody speaks english, everybody is from somewhere else, right? and so, do you think that's what attracts all these companies from-- alba: yeah, i mean, i think it's really important to provide and to show the great diversity that we have in this country and in this city. and as you can see it with all the performances from all over the world. damian: when you--when you're there at the festival, do you see other performers and you say, "oh, that's-- i didn't know that they did that in the czech republic.
4:08 pm
i'm going to make note of that." do you learn from each other? do they learn from you and you learn from them? alba: yeah, yeah, sure. i mean, this is a festival for people that love these kind of events, like dance and theater and music, but also for the audience that they are not used to these kind of events. so, i think it's really-- it's really nice because you can see all different kind of things in a great environment, the fort mason center. it's a really good space and it's for family, public, family audiences and also for everybody, you know? damian: so you--the guests, those who go to the fort mason center, they're going to learn something, but do the performers learn something from each other as well just by watching-- alba: of course. i mean, yeah, of course. i mean, every artist, i think that they can have a lot of ideas and know, and know and learn a lot because, yeah, this is what human does, right? we learn a lot to see each other.
4:09 pm
damian: when--i bring up the czech republic because they're one of the guests, but what do you want them to go back to the czech republic with? feeling what or knowing what or learning what from what we had to offer at the festival? alba: i think that the good point of the festival is the diversity and the multiculturalism. and i think that it would be nice if they could go back to the czech republic with a good feeling, with a good feeling of the audience and of the rest of the artists, you know? i think it's--yeah. damian: and the same thing, i'm asking all the questions, but i'm sure there's something that you want to get across. what do you want our viewers to know? alba: yeah, i mean, i think this-- the theme of this year, it's important. i mean, it's the path to democracy. and i think it's an important theme and it's a serious theme because lately the democracy in this country and in all over the world has been going down a little bit, so it's--what we want to do is encourage and see what are
4:10 pm
the actions and the steps that people are doing all over the world to get it back, you know? and even though it's a serious message, we also think that it's important to have a little bit of humor through it so you can digest it better. and we have also the-- some comedy shows and, well, a lot of different kind of shows. so yeah, so i think it's important to get the message, but also have fun. you know, it gets-- damian: when you have guests here from spain or from other parts of europe maybe, do you see that they're amazed or surprised by the diversity of the bay area, the diversity of san francisco? alba: i think so, i think so. yeah, i did it myself when i came, so yeah. it's really nice because you can learn a lot and it's--yeah. damian: the fact that you can go to the golden gate bridge and you're going to hear ten different languages maybe. i mean, that's what makes us so unique. alba: yeah, yeah. damian: all right, and once again, so it involves dancers and singers, what else?
4:11 pm
what else is-- alba: it's theater, dance, performing art, yeah, and music. so yeah, we have--as i said, we bring the international artists that they have never performed here before. so, i think it's kind of big deal because they don't have representation in the us. and also the local artists to promote them, to promote their work, that it's really important. damian: awesome. well, it's happening at the fort mason center, it's the international arts festival of san francisco. there are the dates, may 23 to june 2, fort mason. there's a web address for more information. this really is at the fort mason center. well, thank you so much for your work and for sharing this with us. thank you. and up next here on "comunidad del valle," youth competition for mariachi, stay with us.

♪ damian: well, they're not youth, but that's what they aspire to be. that's the mariachi cobre, and we're talking about youth competition for mariachis on "comunidad del valle." with me to tell us all about it are two community legends, kathy napoli and shirley trevino. wow, what an honor. where have you all been? let's start with you, kathy, where have you been? we haven't seen you in a couple of decades it seems. kathy napoli: well, not that long, but since i last saw you, my children have had children, so i'm a grandma five times. and i earned a law degree, so i've been very busy. damian: wow. kathy: never slowing down. damian: you're still--you said that--you mentioned that you were active with your native american family. kathy: yes, my family are native american from northern california, susanville. my father was maidu, and so i serve on an economic board and their constitution committee. damian: we need somebody to rattle the cages in san jose.

can you come back and--are you-- are you done with that? kathy: i'm never done. damian: shirley, talk about rattling cages, how are you doing? we haven't seen you in a while. shirley trevino: i'm doing fine, and thank you for having us on the program today. damian: thank you. well, talk about, again, what have you been up to? still active? shirley: well, i left gilroy, the santa clara county area, and moved over to san juan bautista. and involved with the league of united latin american citizens, luvac. and i'm involved with a group called las comadres that many of them are--worked with the teatro campesino. and so, we meet every saturday, and i'm still involved in politics, and mover and shaker in the community. damian: for 60 years now, how many? i don't want to date you, but-- shirley: since i was-- since i was ten. damian: and very active with the united farm workers and-- shirley: exactly, exactly, yes. i just--i was supposed to speak at the breakfast in gilroy and my son passed away. so, they read my speech and everyone was in tears.

damian: oh, i bet, i bet. well, it's an honor. again, two community legends here on "comunidad del valle." and you're putting together this youth mariachi competition. tell us about it and why we're so excited about it. kathy: well, i'm very excited because i joined the morgan hill historical society, and our community is represented by about 35% of the population. and i've been on the board about four years, and we really don't have any events that welcome the latino community here, so this will be the first. and i've always supported youth as the president of the alum rock educational foundation and as a former teacher. so, this all fits to support these young people so that they can succeed. as you know, they get a lot of confidence in performing and they can move on to other choices. it teaches them discipline, teaches them teamwork, and you know, it really gets them out in the community to be extroverts and speak up for the community. damian: no, i lived in morgan hill for nine years with the family, and yeah, there aren't events like this,
4:17 pm
and they are needed. what can you share about the event, shirley? shirley: well, i think that the important thing is that the historical society has made a commitment to participate and assist us in this venture because they're offering their property that they have on monterey road. and we felt that--kathy contacted us to help us on the committee, and we thought that it was important to support the youth. when i was in gilroy, i supported a mariachi group that would practice in our hotel, and often they needed instruments, support, uniforms. and so, we thought by having this competition, we could give them money to help support that--those little expenses that they have that their parents can't afford. and we also wanted to get the parents involved and show our support for this cultural event. and the historical society of morgan hill has never had
4:18 pm
an event like this on their property, so we think it's really important to stress that. damian: yeah, i mean, i know some of the young mariachis down in gilroy and morgan hill, and they're very good. they played for my girls when they dance with los mestizos. they dance with my girls as well. and so, this is going to be a strict competition. tell us about the who's in, who's out, and what the rules are. kathy: well, we have four groups so far, and the event is going to be july 20. and the performance is a competition, will be from 11 to 12:30. we already have our judges, we already have our forms, and we really are committed to supporting the young people. so, 16 years and younger because once you're in high school, you're able to have those opportunities there. but the elementary school, the junior high schools don't have that support. so, this is our way to encourage more. when i was the president of the alum rock educational foundation, there were many mariachi groups there at the schools. but because of budget cuts, that's just not possible. so, this is a way for us in morgan hill to support our youth
4:19 pm
and the mariachis that are in san jose, morgan hill, san martin, and gilroy. damian: you're still taking more signups? kathy: yes, we are. it's going to happen in july, so there's still time to sign up. damian: what's that like, shirley, to see chavalitos who maybe were born here and they're taking up the guitaro and they're taking up the trumpet, the violin, and they want to continue that tradition? shirley: well, i think it's important because they're sharing our culture not only with our-- within our own community, but in the broader community. and i think that they-- the instruments that they play, the things that they learn, the way they perform, and the teamwork that they have is a great opportunity for them to continue to-- in their educational endeavors, it makes their commitment to education and learning instruments that, you know, it's just unparalleled with other things. and i'd just like to mention the groups right now that are going to be performing. it's mariachi herencia mexicana. damian: we know them. shirley: mariachi orgullo mexicano.
