where teachers and the district are still talking at this hour. >> the teachers just came out and gave us a briefing about the negotiations and telling us they have now been willing to tell us their demands from the original 10% raise that they were asking for to accepting a 3.2% cost of living adjustment. it's not a done deal yet. they are going back into the negotiating room, and in the meantime all of these teachers have been out here all day and they have been picketing. what they have been told though is that for now they should plan not to be mighty teachers ♪ >> reporter: drumming up support for a pay raise, more than 60 striking teachers walked the picket line today. while their union negotiates with the new haven unified school district for a pay increase. the district is offering a one-time bonus and 1% raise. in a statement, the district says any additional increase would require significant cuts

that would jeopardize student safety. this second grade teacher at the a barker isn't buying it. >> they have not made any cuts to strast costs. >> the union city and south hayward teachers walked out of classrooms last monday forcing the teachers to cover classes for 11,000 students including those at james logan high school committee today some parents joined the picket lines concerned that the lingering strike cld not taking this as a vacation. this is serious for them as well, especially our seniors who have their transscripts pending for their admissions to their university. >> reporter: last night tensions escalated when district negotiators left the bargaining table and teacher parking lot. many chanting shame. but hours after negotiates today, teachers say they have new hope about ending the

strike. >> we're hoping that there's going to be some kind of agreement. hopefully maybe tonight, and it's great that they are having a conversation now. >> reporter: now the teachers say that they do plan to stay out here as long as the negotiating is continuing, even if it's well into the night. so far today's negotiates have been going on for 11 hours, but, again, just minutes ago, the union came out and told the members that they should plan not to be in the marianne favro, nbc bay area news >> thank you. we will stay on this story throughout the night and into tomorrow. for most of us tomorrow means back to school and back to work and maybe back to normal. this was a strange memorial day weekend. we saw ranges, wind and even some hail, but it's all coming to an end. here's a beautiful live look in san francisco. let's bring in our meteorologist

to be away. nbc bay area's sam brock has more on news of the big cat and how folks runner inned of there. >> reporter: neighbors there are just appreciative that the alou family was trying to get the family out. this happened ten minutes away from downtown redwood continue. anthony alou was returning from softball that night and as you mentioned he saw what he thought was a big cat in his driveway. turns out that was no cat and because animal control was closed at 10:00 last night he posted that video on next door and facebook. at this only on oak view deer dallied about. anthony alou and his wife liz are used to some visitors. >> occasionally a raccoon. we've even seen a skunk around the area, but something like this, like a mountain lion. no, never seen it. >> the chants ce encounter had u a little unsettled for his wife, his dog, his neighbors. >> it looked like a sports bike

to me. it looks like a big cat, and when i looked at the video and saw its paws, i was like that thing was not small. >> reporter: about those paws, the paws were no less than this big. >> reporter: that's a rough size estimates. residents who live nearby have seen or heard what they can do. >> opened the door and a mountain lion had a cat in its mouth and heard neck break. >> reporter: they believe mountain lions have killed several deer on his lawn and appreciated the heads up. >> definitely. i used to go out of my house without turning the lights on. i now turn the lights on and i jiggle my keys because i don't want to startle. you see the mountain lion just runs away. >> reporter: it ran away into his backyard, and from there who knows. >> i spent the night throwing golf balls back there to see if i could hear it. i know there's lots of kids and lots of small dogs. >> reporter: he said he did end

up hearing back from a deputy from the san mateo county sheriff's department asking if he needed any help but at that point, raj and jess, the mountain lion had gone. this is four days ago. not so far been another sighting since. reporting live from downtown red wing city, sam brock. >> thanks, sam. search abd rescue crews have found a hiker who was missing at alum rock park. just after 2:00 a group of hikers reported that they couldn't find his friend. still unclear how that man separated from the group. san jose police are also sorting it out, the reports that someone may have shot at the group. now we have a crew at the scene to find out what's happening there. more on this story on our 11:00 newscast. a nerve racking scene at the westfield mall in san francisco this evening. a pair of security scares. about two hours ago a man inside the mall was swinging something

cemetery was followed by an outtoor mass. more coverage in the next half hour. known for one of the most infamous plays in baseball history and so much so he was shunned by fans for years. for bull buckner his life story stretches all the way from napa to boston and today he died at the age of 69. terry mweeney joins us from oakland this evening. an amazing career, but for years he had to deal with that error in the world series. >> reporter: yeah, and quite interestingly the umpire in the right field line that night was san francisco native ed montague. he watched buckner who was born in vallejo muff that ball. the boston media came down on buckner like you wouldn't believe and he resented them for decades and then finally, one day, all was forgiven. >> little roller up along first, behind the bag. >> reporter: it's one of the most famous plays in world sires

the thieves claim they didn't steal anything. minutes later the camera caught them running out of the store and handing the beef off to someone else. >> no holiday for san francisco's police chief. he's fighting for his job. chief bill scott on the hot controversial police raid on a journalist's home. nbc bay area's mark matthews spoke with the chief and mayor today. does she still have faith in his ability to lead this department? >> police chief bill scott says it will be theaccountability tht the investigation. >> there are issues in this investigation. those issues have to be addressed. >> the investigate will be into what led to the police search warrant raid on the home of freelance journalist brian carmody. >> to restore the public trust because of the way that this investigation has been handled so far. >> reporter: police are looking for evidence of who leaked a police report on the death of public defender jeff adacci. california law protects journalist from search warrants that are aimed at revealing

sources and the outcry over the violation of that law has pushed the mayor to call for this investigation. the head of the police union is calling for chief scott to resign. initial chief scott said the raid on the journalist's home was legal, but this past friday he apologized and said mistakes were made. today the mayor was asked if she had faith in them. >> i think at this point my goal is to focus on trust by providi outside entity for the purpose of dealing with this particular issue so thank you all so much. >> thank you. >> reporter: nbc bay area has had a longtime relationship with brian carmody in this case. we brought video from him that included the police report on adacci. i asked chief scott if he knew of the raid on carmody's home before it took place and if the two judges who signed the swarnd new that he was journalist with the press pass. >> that will all come out in an independent investigation.

>> >> a deadly crash in the east bay brought traffic to a crawl for hours this. happened on walnut creek today just before noon on 680 when a porsche and jeep collided. the driver in the porsche died. there was debris scattered all over. >> the porsche was going the opposite way of traffic and the jeaive traffic. i don't know around or what was the cause of the accident. just a big crash. >> repor chp is still trying to figure out exactly what happened but it does not appear that alcohol was a factor. a daring high-speed chase through contra costa county ends with a crash and three teens arrested. it started with an armed robbery at a gas station last night. police in lafayette spotted the suspect's car and chased it along 24 and then highway 4. the teens ultimately crashed into another car exiting highway

4 in antioch. one person was hurt. they found masks, guns and cash in the car. >> an alarm number of deadly accidents and duis. the chp says so far at least 21 people have been killed in car crashes statewide this memorial day weekend and half of those people were not wearing seat belts. >> they important to remember, that you know, people need seat belts. we've improved from what we used to be in the past but we're still having a lot of people not wearing the seat belts. >> wear the seat belts. as for drunk driving, more than 1,000 dui arrests so far. >> nba's tipoff is thursday. tomorrow the warriors leave for toronto, and we now know they won't be taking kevin durant. still injured, comb steve kerr the team hasn't decided if k.d. will travel to toronto which means he's likely to miss game two in toronto on sunday. now in better news, demarcus cousins practiced with the team today and is listed as questionable for game one.

weather back. >> average weather would be nice. i think we can get there tomorrow and then maybe a taste of summer making a comeback finally in your seven-day forecast. let's show you fremont. a pretty view for you. stars and stripes on this memorial day as you see the low clouds above a cool evening, a little breeze out there. 57 degrees in free month. now later tonight looking at some low 50s surrounded fremont and san jose and with the low clouds may see a few mist just early in the morning and then tomorrow more sunshine, and highs back in the 70s. so finally near average temperatures around san jose. 75 degrees. still a little bit on the cool side from half moon bay and san francisco and oakland. ukiah up to about 82 t.78 in santa rosa and also antioch tomorrow close to 80 degrees. so this is the pattern shift that we're finally going see as this area of low pressure that brought all the weird weather yesterday starts to move out. we will see warmer temperatures for the middle part of the week but look closely here like

clockwork wednesday, thursday and friday afternoon basically from 2:00 to 5:00 and the peak heating of the day. notice how the showers are flaring up. around the north bay higher hills thursday afternoon into friday so that's something we'll have to watch as high pressure is not quite over northern california just yet to prevent some of these afternoon showers neither mountains from firing. we'll be watching that closely as we head towards the weekend. notice how this high strengthens towards northern california sunday into monday and shower chances for the mountains start to shut down and temperatures are set to climb as you see right there. that seven-day forecast running at the bottom of the screen and full screen. san francisco should be into the 70s by the weekend, again, mostly sunny skies and warm temperatures. in the locations we'll see 70s for the west of the week notice 70s and low 80s and there's a potential that we could see 90s for a few spots next week. coming at 8:45, ahese mountain may bring any measurable rain into the bay area for the end of

ld case. today marks 25 years since 14-year-old jenny lynn was stabbed to death in her castro valley home. she had just school. lynn is seen here in a video taken just weeks before her 1994 murder. her parents who keep jenny's memory alive through memorials and a musical foundation have opinion encouraged by recent bay area cold cases solved through dna testing. technology is allowing them to revisit evidence found at the crime scene. someone stole a pup from a pet store in east bay, and she was caught on surveillance camera. >> now this happened at the pet food express in lafayette. nbc bay area's jodi hernandez has more. >> my heart dropped. oh, my god, did she really tyke iris. >> reporter: julie bainbridge

skibs what s describes what she realized that one of the puppies her rescue gr was stopped. >> a woman was shown carrying iris the puppy after grabbing her when no one was look. it appears she may also he grabbed a leash from the shore shelves before slipping out the back floor. >> when i seen the video it was shocking, you know, i was scared for iry, first of all, because she was so sneaky about it. >> someone that would steal a pet is probably not safe. >> reporter: michael levy is angry and worried. the store prides itself on helping rescue groups finding animals good homes. they are offering a $2,500 reward. >> we want iris found back to the rescue and iris in the right home. >> the folks at the animal rescue definitely want iris back with her puppy pals. they are worried she's not safe. >> we don't know if this woman is taking care of her.

area news... president trump )s trip to japan is ove right now in a special primetime edition of nbc bay area news, president trump's trip to japan over, and while there were no big policy announcements, there was no shortage of eye-opening statements as well. now the trip lasted four days, and tonight there are big questions about what was actually accomplished.

>> among biggest issues, the differences between the president and the japanese prime minister on issues like north korea and trade. here's nbc's dan schenamen. >> reporter: president trump wrapping up his trip to japan, inspecting a japanese ship with prime minister abe and stopping at the ""uss wasp"" where he marked memorial day with america's military. >> as president i have no higher honor than serving as your co and women of the american armed forces. >> reporter: a highlight of the president's day in japan becoming the first world leader to meet with the new emperor. the president's visit also showcased the sharp disagreements with the host country on north korea. p japan's prime minister called north korea's leader kim jong-un a violation of u.n. resolutions and while the president's own national security adviser agrees with the prime minister. >> i view it differently. i view it as a man, perhaps he wants to get attention, and perhaps not.

mark this memorial day has turned into somethingtehundreds families responded by telling their own harrowing here's nbc's tom costello. >> reporter: it started with an army tweet asking about the value of military service. >> give to others and protect ones that i love and to better myself as a man and warrior. >> reporter: but that single tweet has drawn more than 10,000 responses, many very dark, including i became addicted to heroin, ptsd, depression anxiety, nightmares. can't keep a job and have difficulty interacting with people. >> this is the table that i sat at when i tried to end my own life. >> you were going to kill yourself right here? >> yes. >> reporter: army veteran eric donohoe survived three ied explosions in iraq. he returned home with a brain injury and ptsd. >> i just decided that everybody would be better without me and i grabbed my glock, sat down and

put my glock in my mouth and tried to pull the trigger, and the thing that stopped me was the realization that my family would have to live here in the house. >> reporter: there are currently 19 million veterans, 20 of them die by suicide every single day. one and a half times the civilian rate. tammy duckworth who lost both legs in iraq is now a senator fighting for veteran access to better he can sglaer the better healthcare. >> there are not enough mental health professionals. >> the army took note posting a crisis hotline number and tweeting your scories are real. they matter. we have to take care of those who came back home with scars we can't see. >> every veteran has a story to tell, and that story is a part of our history and has value. >> reporter: on this memorial day a reminder of the sacrifice that veterans continue to live with every day. tom costello nbc news, carmel, indiana.

>> calls for change at mt. everest tonight after another climber today. american lawyer christopher cullish died on his way down from the summit. this is the 13th death on everest since january. experts say because of the long lines, literally climb remembers spending too much time in the so-called death zone where oxygen is limited. nepal's government issued a record 381 permits this year. critics worry too many climbers are inexperienced and say the way the summit is accessed needs to be changed. >> there's so many people who want to do it and i think maybe there should be a limit as to how many people go up each day because you only have a limited supply of objection jen and if you're tired you're tired. >> 300 people have died since people first started scaling mt. everest in 1953. also learning more about the sacramento man killed by a shark over the weekend. 65-year-old thomas smiley, a recently retired optometrist,

was swimming at a beach there in maui. his friends said smiley loved swimming and visited hawaii quite on. you can see some of the rescue footage here. warnings are now posted at that beach where the shark attack happened. this is the first deadly shark attack in mauy in four years. >> in san jose, an old building may be the key to solving a very modern day housing problem for college students. scott budman says that building could be turned into nearby and affordable hassing for nearby sjsu? >> reporter: there are already dozens of students walking and scooting nearby, but soon they might be even closer to home thanks to a city recommendation that the alfred e. alquist building on san antonio between second and third streets be taken over by san jose state university. >> students struggle. >> reporter: a welcome development students tell us for a student helped in by a housing

day -- i tochi sentiment for fallen soldiers.. one penny means a lot. on this memorial day and every year moving forward it's a sentiment for fallen stories. damian trujillo joins us with some moving >> reporter: amid the bagpipes and the patriotic colors, little max mcgee walked from headstone to headstone pennies in hand saluting every soldier who lay before him. >> we lay a penny on each headstone so when their families come or whoever comes to visit them knows someone came to pay respects. >> reporter: among those remembered was sean walsh of san jose, an mp with the national guard who left home of becoming a police dram canine handler, a dream cut shot in afghanistan. >> for me the void is very big. but i'm blessed that his friends never forgot him and i'm bless that had a country never forgot.

clear out the skies before the high clouds approach and and low 50s will be warming e back into the 70s and a few areas up to areaser in santa rosa and antioch tomorrow could actually get close to 80 degrees. 75 in the forecast for san jose and a sign of things to come as seven-day forecast probably is getting your attention there. if you look off by the nbc logo. it will be warming up early next week. 70s around a the tri-valley an 180 in antioch. bayside temperatures still mainly in the 60s and low 7 as around redwood city and palo alto and mid-60s. closer to downtown san francisco. temperatures mostly in the 70s and climbing to 82 to ukiah tomorrow. one thing to watch. we're talking about this warming trend, but if you're on the hills of the north bay maybe the diablo range or santa cruz mountains. watch what happens wednesday afternoon. thursday afternoon, especially there around the north bay higher hills north of napa county and, again, friday afternoon. we have a little upper level

system that's going to add to a little bit of instability and daytime heating. there's a chance we could be seeing showers over the hill tops and the futurecast kind of picks that up around the north bay hills, diablo range and santa cruz mountains. if you zoom down, you can see any rain from these showers are limited and it looks like most should be contained to the higher hills. it's going to be an interesting forecast because we're talking about warmer temperatures, but especially thursday and friday, stay tuned. we might have to watch for the showers has we drift away from the higher hill tops of the north bay towards the evening. so that's the up thing to watch in terms of potential for some hilltop showers. strong thunderstorms build back and that's why the forecast on the bottom of the screen going on bit of a roller coaster ride and this sunday and monday we think it's likely that we'll see temperatures climbing into the 880s and 90s for the valleys, so a slow steady warmup for san francisco should be closer to 70
