even the construction crews on holiday. back to you. thanks, mike. 5:01. breaking news to tell you about out of dayton, ohio. daylight is finally revealing some of the damage left behind after tornados and severe weather hit the state. tens of thousands of people without power this morning. this is more video of that damage coming into our newsroom. the weather service issued 36 tornados over the weekend. authorities confirm at least seven people hurt. so far no tkaebts are reported. people who survived the storm are happy things weren't worse. one person who rode out the storm, got home just in time to keep his pets safe. >> i'm glad i got home to get them. at the end of the day, i would have been worse. i have no car now. no home. and i've been working really hard to get all of this. >> that is tough there.

some people were able to catch video as they struck overnight. this morning president trump heading back to washington after stirring up controversy with his remarks on north korea and joe biden. welcome back, tracie. >> reporter: hey there. thank you, laura. good morning, everyone. so the president overseas disagreeing with one of his own top aides, national security adviser siding with a dictator. we will tell you all about that. but we begin with this controversial comment overnight. president trump speaking to u.s. troops overnight before losing japan. >> shielding our nation from dangerous weapons. >> reporter: this after he disagreed with japan and his own national security adviser on whether north korea's missile test violate international security agreements. >> i view it differently. i view it as a man that perhaps he wants to get attention and perhaps not. who knows?

popular climb a lot safer for everyone. yosemite national park started issuing permits in the interest of safety. only 300 people can climb per day. that means 66% fewer climbers are up on that mountain at any given time. but the statistics for the accidents are just about the same. if you look at your screen there, 38 major incidents before the lottery. and then after the lottery when there were 66% hikers there were 35 major incidents. all of this appearing in the journal of environmental medicine. overcrowding seems to be a major factor on the everest. if you look at this line of climbers on the world's tallest mountain, it is just a log jam. eleven climbers died in the last 11 days. experts say it is because they are spending too much time in the zone where there isn't enough oxygen and they are working through their supplies

before they can make it out of the death zone. we talk with a climber who used a less traveled route. >> i was heartbroken when i found out what happened. i feel so bad for the families and all the climbers who got stuck in the mess that day. >> another man who died, this man from colorado. there was a narrow climbing window. there were about 400 climbers and sherpas that were permitted. so a lot of folks saying there's just too much. >> there's so many people. >> right. >> trying to go up. >> when there's not enough oxygen, it has the effect on the body and the muscles and the brain and the lungs. it seems like a horrible way to go, too. >> thanks, kris. >> 5:07 for you right now. we were talking about the decriminalizing of psychedelic mushrooms.

pete surat rat toes live with a look at what people to decide >> reporter: there will be a public hearing later tonight in oakland. as i was saying not too long ago, we are still a ways away from any type of mushroom shops popping everywhere like we see with cannabis shops. oakland public safety hearing committee will discuss the possibility of decriminalizing psychedelic mushrooms. they come from plants or fungi, not lsd oreck stacy. the benefits of the mushrooms is it is helpful for ptsd. some researchers caution using them outside of clinically

researched trials. the department saying they have only make about a dozen or less when it comes to possession of psychedelic drugs. there is concern when it comes to driving under the influence of these mushrooms. the vote will go to full city council as early as next week. live in oakland, pete suratos, "today in the bay". >> there will be many concerns, pete. thank you. a live look for you at palo alto this morning. if you live in the city, you could be shelling out more to pay for the city's salary. they are expected to raise most fees 7% to give workers a raise. it would apply to renting space at recreation facilities and building permits as well. the city is trying to recover costs to higher salaries.

work. instead, they will picket at the school and district headquarters behind me after another day of negotiations. you mentioned all day long and unfortunately still no agreement. last night the teachers' union posted on facebook page their frustration that the district negotiators will not be able to meet until 3:00 tomorrow afternoon. and i just heard from the district. they say they can't meet today because their team will be at schools supporting students during the strike and because of a school board meeting later tonight. the district and teachers have budged slightly in their demands. you'll recall the teachers' union was asking for a 10% raise for this year and the next. take a look at your tv screen. this is what they are now asking for. 3.7% raise this year and 3.26% raise next year. that's just over 7% when you add it all up. the district offer right now, they are still offering a 3% one-time bonus for this year and then a 2% raise next year.

pride flag would fly all month at city hall. dublin narrowly voted against the plan. walnut creek approved the same move lawmakers are joining the call to stop horse racing at one southern california racetrack. senator dianne feinstein is pushing for a moratorium on racing at santa anita. three horses have died in the past nine days and 26 have been euthanized since last december. experts blame the wet weather for creating hazardous conditions at the racetrack 5:44. a 4-year-old boy is in a san diego hospital after a possible mountain lion attack that happened yesterday a half a mile from trail head in a canyon north of miramesa. there is still no update on his condition. right now authorities are only saying some kind of big cat attacked, and it may have been a bobcat. neighbors tell us signs nearby warn about recent mountain lion

fix the 199 4 bi4 bill. so the you is like little directed at joe biden, though bernie sand ertz also voted for the crime bill. if you talk crime in the 1990s, you have to consider the attacks on the central park five. a group of young african-american men wrongly convicted of a brutal rape. trump took out a full page newspaper ad calling for the return of the death penalty. even after someone else confessed and submitted dna evidence and the young men were released, trump said he still considered the five guilty. polls show mr. trump has very little support from african-american voters. and the central park five is part of that. what is the purpose of this line of attack? well, there are two ways to beat an opponent in a race. get people to vote for you or get people to not vote at all.

skies and also warmer temperatures. what that is going to mean is looking up ahead over the next several days it will get even warmer. so we are finally tracking spring weather around the bay area. microclimate highs for today, 78 in gilroy. 76 in morgan hill. 75 in san jose. check out the difference in temperatures in the east bay and the tri-valley. oakland, 68 degrees. we warm up into the upper 70s in walnut creek. and low 80s through antioch. 6 in san mateo. if you're going to be in the city, light breezy conditions in the afternoon. north bay, 78 for santa rosa. 74 for novato. and even in terms of your pollen report. we are still doing okay, though. showers help clear out a lot of pollen in the area. that is the plus side of showers. but grass is still moderate. take the allergy medication on the road. here's the setup for our forecast. we've got the high pressure building in.

tomorrow it will be a little bit warmer. we will keep this pattern for the coastal areas. no noticeable changes in terms of the next four days for san francisco. but into the weekend, san francisco will also be warming up. however, you'll notice more of a warmup in inland areas. and, again, as we head towards thursday and friday, we're watching for a short wave trough that will dip down. it will be a chance of seeing showers for the mountain areas in napa, sonoma, maybe even the sierra and higher regions. it will not do much. it will increase cloud cover. a big warmup in the upper 80s and low 90s. it looks like it is looking good over here. just starting to build. we are restoring the flow for the workday. for most places, it is a typical pattern easing into's commute. we are looking at an issue in the tri-valley. it's there.

miles canyon, mission and 680. use mission down and around if you're out of fremont. just outside city limits there is a carr fire. you do see slowing from 680 where there is a build. take down to mission and then back up again. it's a little bit longer. again, the carr fire may have at least one lane blocked. fire crews were out there earlier. just past the dublin interchange. sensors looking just fine. a volume of traffic starting to build. just past the interchange, a crash. a spinout reported there on the shoulder. i think the driver just pulled over to help out. not involved in the crash. a slower drive down the upper east shore freeway. the backup got severe early on. now easing back in as a lot of folks were trying to get off a little bit early, checking on some of the buildup from the weekend. pass transit, a great option.

because the shark just swam on by. they can range in size from 13 to 20 feet long. quite the view there from their boat. new insight from the hiker that was lost for 17 days in dense forest in hawaii. rescuers found amanda eller badly injured. she had a fractured leg, burns and skin infection. it all happened on the island of maui. on friday, rescuers were on their last 10 minutes of fuel when they finally spotted her. the 35-year-old had hiked a three-mile trail before, but this time she left her cell phone in the car. . >> there were times of fear and loss and wanting to give up. and it did come down to life and death, and i had to choose. and i chose life. i wasn't going to take the easy way out. >> she survived, she says, by eating berries, drinking river
