accordingly. plan for pleasant 70s and even a couple low 80s in the tri-valley this afternoon. breezy conditions along the coastline. 65 degrees in san francisco. 75 in san jose. 78 in through concord. and this is just the beginning of a warmup. all right, mike, how are the roads. >> we're looking pretty good. bay bridge toll plaza had a big backup easing up. part of it may be there was a fender-bender reported somewhere along the maze approach in towards the toll plaza itself. we're tracking that. i'm marking it. no major backups. we have a little build as well. see the slowing out of richmond, the merge and the racetrack, golden gate field. a little farther down for west 80, there may be an issue. someone may be on the university overcrossing causing a distraction. so we're checking that. the rest of the bay moves smoothly. niles canyon, you may not want to take that because of an earlier car fire. the rest of the tri-valley moving well. back to you. thanks, mike.

new this morning, president trump is heading back to washington. that is stirring up controversy in japan with his comments on joe biden. tracie potts joins us live on capitol hill with more. tracie? >> reporter: hi, laura. good morning, everyone. we'll show you all of that. but we begin this morning with the president's controversial remarks that happened overnight. president trump speaking to u.s. troops overnight before leaving japan. >> together you are advancing freedom on the high seas, shielding our nation from dangerous weapons. >> reporter: this after he disagreed with japan and his own national security adviser on whether north korea's missile tests violate international security agreements. >> i view it differently. i view its a man, perhaps he wants to get attention, and perhaps not. who knows? >> reporter: the president emphasized our up side-down trade balance with japan. and he's catching heat back home for siding with north korea's

and possible tornados slammed the state. tens of thousands of people are without power right now. and the weather service issued 36 tornado warnings last night across the region. authorities confirming at least seven people are hurt. so far no deaths to report. people who survived that storm are happy things weren't worse. one person who rode out the storm got in home just in time to keep his pet safe. >> i'm glad i was able to get home to them. at the end of the day i would have been worse. but i have no car now, no home. and i just -- i've been working really hard to get all of this. >> tough for so many people right now. some people are able to catch video of the tornados as they struck overnight. mt. everest is known for being a difficult climb for experienced mountaineers. but experts say climbers are dying not because they lack

skills but they lack oxygen. it is extending to other climbs like even yosemite's half dome. >> we heard there was an 11th day, we thought of half dome and how they tried to make that popular climb safer. the national park started issuing permits in the interest of safety. only 300 climbers per day. that means 66% fewer hikers. it was 38 major incidents before the lottery. 35 major incidents after the lotte lottery. crowding seems to be major. yo can see the people on the tallest mountain. some say it is because the log jam is forcing people to stay in the position where they are depleting their oxygen supplies before they can make it out of

the so-called death zone. a climber from berkeley summited mt. everest but from the less crowded route of tibet. >> it was heartbreaking when i found out what happened. i feel so balancedly for the families and just all the climbers month got stuck in the mess that day. >> the latest climber was this man, 62-year-old chris coolish of colorado. he was an experienced climber. there was bad weather and nepal permitted nearly 400 climbers and sherpas, which is a record for mt. everest. laura. pretty amazing. happening today, oakland set to discuss the possibility of decriminalizing psychedelic mushrooms after being voted to legalize so-called magic mushrooms. live from oakland with the details is pete suratos.

pete? >> reporter: the public hearing tonight in oakland. we are still quite a ways of seeing any mushroom shops popping up around the bay area or oakland for that matter. the issue is regarding decriminalization, not the legalization of these mushrooms. oakland city council public safety committee will discuss this issue. it would apply to psych dell eubgs from plants or fungi, not lsd or ecstasy. they tout it as that inner for ptsd and depression. some researchers caution using the mushrooms out of clinically research trials. alameda county sheriff's office weighed in saying there aren't as much concerns with mushrooms.

only a dozen arrests a year. there is concern when it comes to driving under the influence of these mushrooms. after tonight, it will go to a vote with the city of oakland city council. it could happen as early as next week. pete suratos for "today in the bay". thanks a lot, pete. berkeley leaders debate an ordinance allowing city workers to clear homeless people's property from sidewalks. the city started enforcing that in february. it is designed to keep sidewalks clear during regular hours and limit personal objects on busy ro walkways. council members debate a moratorium until they can come up with a more coordinated response. a live look at polo alto.

they go raise fees 7.5% to give raises. and raising renting space at recreational facilities, to building permits. changes are expected to go into effect in july 6:10. there are amazing things going on in oakland. a's had their largest crowd of the season yesterday as they beat the angels 8-5. matt chapman hit a key home run in the 7th as they won their 10th game in a row. really nice streak. this is the longest winning streak in 13 years. keep it going. >> keep it going, vianey. like you. a lot of people love when the teams are winning. a lot of people love you when you forecast -- >> nice weather. yeah. we heard it on sunday when it was raining and people wanted to hang out with family and

indy winner will ring the bell. the longest losing streak weekly since 2011. first american is a mortgage company. it has revealed late friday that first american allowed hundreds of millions of financial records to be exposed on the internet. the company said it was a design defe defect. security experts as many as 850 million records were exposed. the "new york times" says the federal trade commission will hold off on fining facebook billions of dollars until all five people can determine how much the penalty should be. it could be $5 billion for violating people's privacy. but there is a split on the five-person board of commissioners. the "times" said the three republicans say the fine is big enough. the two democrats want further penalties. the board chairman wants them all to agree before moving

they are leftover clouds. it is not going to produce any rain. as we begin to see the sun pop out, our temperatures will warm up with it. in san jose, 55 degrees. expect a pleasant afternoon. a look at satellite radar. not a lot going on. the city that affected us with the cooler temperatures made its exit. now we have high pressure rolling on in. microclimate highs for today will be comfortable and more normal for this time of year. 75 in san jose. 68 in oakland. 80 in ukiah. warmer in the north bay and interior valleys. breezy along the coastline. overall, though, you can expect to see a good spread of temperatures. we're talking 60s for the bay and the coast. 70s further inland. san mateo, 68 degrees. hanging out in san francisco. again, expect to keep that cloud cover early on. and once the clouds part, the sun will dominate.

banning abortion after a fetal heartbeat can be detected. they would join alabama, georgia and other states that already have restrictive abortion bills honoring san francisco's former mayor ed lee. city officials will donate a book to the san francisco public library. it is dedicated to lee's accomplishments. the mayor's widow, anita lee, will attend. marilee died after suffering a heart attack more than a year ago. new this morning, one bay area war veteran has berkeley native kamal bell to thank for helping him move back in. >> the comedian tweeted out this that enough money was raised for leonard powell to move back. in to 17, the senior citizen said he was forced from his home after he was unable to pay for city required repairs. he eventually ended up with a

>> thank you very much, mike. 6:3. another day of negotiations and still no agreement for teachers in hayward and union city. "today in the bay" bob redell outside the hayward unified school district. >> reporter: we expect picketing outside district headquarters and other schools in the new haven school district here in union city and hayward. this is the ninth day of the strike. sit unlikely there will be a deal made today even after the long day yesterday of negotiations that fell apart. the teachers union posted on their facebook page their frustration that they say negotiators were not be able to meet until 3:00 tomorrow. no meeting today. the district and teachers have

budged in their demands. the teachers' union was asking for a 10% raise this year and the next. they are asking for 3.7% raise this year. 3.26% next year. that is around 7% total if you add it up. the district is offering a 3% one-time bonus for this year and now a 2% raise for next year. that's up from 1%. and an additional $1 million comes in revenue, the district would add half percent to that raise and 1% if they get $2 million in new revenue. the schools are open but attendance has been dwindling down as far as the attendance rate goes. most of the classes are enrichment classes, not actual class instruction.

testimony this morning resumes following a four-day break in the deadly ghost ship warehouse fire. almena and harris face 36 counts of manslaughter, one for each person who died. one month ago the trial got under way. it could last several more weeks if not longer. the prosecution is still in the midst of presenting witnesses. survivors providing emotional accounts to conclude last week's testimony. 6:34 right now. in a few hours, oakland's mayor libby schaaf will talk about her push to fix potholes across the city. earlier this month they used $100 million to repave roads. it is being ranked as having some of the worst roads in the bay area. we told you about a group calling themselves the pothole vigilantes. they have repaired roads in the middle of the night even though the city doesn't want them to a reward is being offered in an unusual shoplifting incident caught on camera.

pushing for a mortatorium on racing at santa anita. 26 horses have been euthanized since last december. 6:43. a had-year-old boy is in a san diego hospital after a possible mountain lion attack. it happened a half mile from the trail head in a canyon north of mira mesa. he was rushed to the hospital. right now authorities are saying some kind of big cat attacked, and it may have been a bobcat. signs nearby warn about recent mountain lion sightings. video of a mountain lion caught on security camera outside a peninsula home. take a look at it. the animal runs back by that back door as you saw right there. it happened in emerald hills of redwood city last week. we don't know if the cat is still in the same area. scary there.

one san francisco senator wants to keep bars open longer. >> a bill would extend last call from 2:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. is getting a fair shot. former governor brown vetoed the same measure last year. now state senator scott wiener hops to get support from governor newsom. the hope is newsom, one-time restaurant owner himself, likes the taste of the bill. it would allow 10 cities, including san francisco, oakland and l.a. to decide on new closing times. >> 6:44 right now. the president is on his way back to the united states after a weekend trip in japan scott mcgrew joins us. he visited u.s. sailors and marines. >> aboard one of the ships. docked at the u.s. navy base. he spoke to marines of the uss wasp. two fought against the japanese in the second world war.

the modern relationship between the u.s. and japan has never been stronger. video here of the president and first lady leaving a blustery tokyo boarding air force one. they will continue to alaska and on to washington, d.c. the president is tweeting while he goes. last night he said anyone associated with the 1994 crime bill will not have a chance of being elected. in particular, african-americans will not be able to vote for you. i, on the other hand, was responsible for the criminal justice reform, which had tremendous support, and helped fix the bad 1994 bill. now, that word you in there is likely directed at joe biden. pretty standard for the 94 crime bill as well. if you talk crime in the '90s, consider donald trump's attack on the central park five. a group of young african-americans wrongly convicted of a brutal rape. trump even took out a full-page newspaper ad calling for the

this was at a dead stop. i hit a couple computer buttons and the screen refreshed. it was my issue, not the san mateo bridge's issue. look at the westbound volume. we are slowing out of hayward. gradual build in the south bay, standard through san jose with that push. i want to call out mountain view, north 101 toward the 85 merge. an issue as far as the volume of traffic. somewhere at the start of the overcrossing. we are tracking that. it could be a factor especially handsing the slowdown. that would be on 85 where we don't see a problem. nice san jose build. 87 and 101, early burst. smoothed out now. good news over here, niles canyon road, earlier carr fire and fire crews have all cleared from the area. so no more problem between mission and 680. 680 itself, the castro valley y.
