nights and a quiet time on a saturday morning. thanks so much for joining us. i'm garvin thomas. vianey arana is here as usual with a look at your microclimate forecast. and really microclimate today. >> yeah, did you see how it is a little gray in san jose? we're noticing the cloud cover. but look at the fog, golden gate bridge, where is it? you see that very much and eventually we'll get some of that to burn off. it will be lingering a lot longer for the coastline. so will the fog. but eventually once we do get good clearing we'll start to warm up. i want to show you how far this extends. half moon bay as well, even creeping in through hayward and pats of sunnyvale. and take a look at your temperature trend. once the clouds clear out, we'll make way for sunshine. by 2:00, we will be warming up into the 80s.

this will lead us into a bit of a drying trend and i'm tracking 90s into next week. that's in about 15 minutes. >> summer is finally around the corner. vianey, thank you very much. well, it has the feel of an election night. high profile candidates taking the stage with plenty of cheers and promises. the road to the white house coming right through the bay area this weekend. san francisco is hosting the state's democratic convention and many of the presidential candidates seizing the opportunity to make their pitch. among the candidates, beto o'rourke, senators kamala harris and elizabeth warren. sam brock was tracking their every step and listening to their every word. >> reporter: presidential candidates are canvassing san francisco and some voters are seeing them with fresh eyes. >> this is my first time voting. i'm very excited. i'm here to see beto. >> reporter: or maybe they are feeling historic diversity could

translate to historic change. >> we have an lgbt candidate, a latino, five, six women running. so i mean i'm just excited. >> reporter: on this night, two of those women, kamala harris and elizabeth warren, were warming up crowds on either side of the bay. >> today a minimum wage job in america will not keep a mama and a baby out of poverty. that is wrong and that is why i'm in this fight. >> we will not stop fighting until every woman and the right and ability to make a decision about her own life and her own body. >> reporter: senator kamala harris's comments coming at a time when threats to abortion rights figure to play a critical role in the democratic platform. mending a torn country is also a priority, something congressman beto o'rourke touched upon after arriving in his minivan. >> what is the one thing you're trying to communicate to california voters 1234.

>> if we're going to meet the challenge of climate, economy, health care, we need somebody who can bring people together and make the democracy work for everyone. >> reporter: with hundreds lined up to see household names, it is ultimately the messages that they deliver that will come under the microscope as democrats audition for the party's next leader. sam brock, nbc bay area news. and late last night, eric swalwell took the stage at an lgbtq event in san francisco. the east bay congressman also running for president. this event hosted by equality california, and the lgbtq caucus. a little bit more now about the convention. it is going to be an intense 48 hours. 14 presidential hopefuls are trying to win support from their own party. all will be speaking at the democratic state convention this weekend, each candidate will have just seven minutes to connect with a critical crowd. >> i think that it will come

down to how you they will perform in the midwest and whether they will win. >> i'm looking for someone who can bring people together and unite, someone who is focused on education, health care and mental health and housing. >> candidates who win support from delegates will win volunteers. thousands of delegates attending the convention say they are ready to lead a ground game for the candidate that they choose to support. now to the republican side and no big surprise that president trump is indeed running for re-election. he tweeted out that he will hold his campaign kickoff event on june 18th in orlando. he will be joined by first lady melania and along with vice president mike pence and his wife karen pence. president trump is the only incumbent to ever file re-election paperwork on the day he was inaugurated. since then, he has repeatedly talked about running again and confirmed that pence would again be his running mate.

the mayor of virginia beach calls it the most devastating day in the history of the coastal city. a gunman who was a long time employee of the city opened fire on his colleagues at the government complex. he was eventually killed after an exchange of gunfire with officers. now, plenty of questions remain as to why this happened. police officers used patrol cars for cover and called in armored personnel carriers to secure the buildings. among the 13 killed was a police officer, six people were injured by gunfire, the shooter has been identified by federal authorities as dewayne craddock. >> folks who work in that building, i have a number of officers right now who have been through what best can be described as a warzone. their lives will be changed. >> the shooter legally purchased several firearms recently. the virginia beach police chief said he was using a .45 caliber

hand gun with high capacity magazines with a sound suppresser. a student reported seeing another student carrying this gun at santa rose high. the school locked down for hours. officers tracked down the 15-year-old suspect in a neighborhood next to the school. they also found the pellet gun in the trash at a nearby mcdonald's. a student tweeted out this video of seniors who were stuck in the gym during the lockdown. it was a tense day on campus in the south bay. yesterday several students at say czar chavez elementary got sick after eating expired candy. parents were called to the school. the six children went home, two taken by their parents to the doctor. >> very scary. i don't know what happened to him. >> the students say the expired

san francisco from san bruno mountain let's take a peek outside. 7:10 on saturday morning. you are looking at san francisco from san bruno mountain. as you see, there is a good marine layer of fog there this morning. but vianey promises you will that we will have sunshine in the forecast. it is called the cure-all for many ailments, from insomnia to arthritis to chronic pain. cbd is soaring in popularity. and even though it won't get you high, critics say it still needs

to be regulated. yesterday the fda held its first public hearing on the booming industry. janelle wang has the highlights. >> reporter: cbd, modern day cure-all or snake oil? safe for lotions, coffee or even ben sand jand jerrys or should closely rely lated? just a couple of the questions raised today. >> overregulation will drive consumers to the black market. >> reporter: the cannabis extract has doctors urging caution. >> we are rapidly getting behind the curve in terms of what is happening in the real world and what patients are utes lilizing. >> reporter: over 100 speakers took to the podium and one thing was for certain, there is lots of confusion. first of all there are the laws that say it is legal but it can't be added to food or dietary supplements.

welcome back to the broadcast. 7:15 is the time. 59 degrees right now in santa rosa. foggy at the golden gate bridge. our next story takes place not far from the bridge in san francisco. and it is not about the house, it is the land. a decaying unlivable shack will cost you a couple million in san francisco. this house is a century old hasn't been lived in for at least a decade, but it sits on a prime piece of real estate. icing on the cake, a pre-approved permit to demolish it. the house is believed to be an historic earthquake shack protected by the city, but turns out that wasn't the case. so the new owner can tear it

>> and cloudy conditions. >> so if you are waking up saying i guess i'll stay in bed today -- no. >> that is the mike yoe climader you. the coastline tends to be a little slower it clear and that is what we will see today. so hanging out in san francisco or half moon bay, expect the fog to dochl nature the first half of date. definitely seeing cooler temperatures as you head out the door. but metrologically speaking, today is the first day of summer. officially it isn't until june 22 1, but we'll get a preview. and we have the low clouds which means that we also have limited visibility. fog in santa rose, down to about a quarter of a mile. and check out santa cruz down to about four miles. so highway 17 can get tricky and again, it will be a little slower to burn for the coastal areas and beaches. so not the best beach morning, but maybe in to the afternoon it will get a little better around

the coastline. so hour by hour, i want to show you this because we've been tracking that system that is bringing rain to far northern california near eureka and sacramento. but also the system that will move in through lake tahoe. so the window it to leave is ri now because then we get the system that moves in with rain and another round of showers again tomorrow evening with a chance of seeing some storms pop up again for the mountains. overall though, bay area wouldn't be affected by that system aside from the cloud cover. we'll be seeing another foggy start early tomorrow and another foggy start early monday morning as well into your workweek. but as far as the temperatures go again, just travel a little further inland and you will get all of that sunshine and the temperatures will be warming up into the 80s. 82 in san jose. milpit milpitas, 82. concord a high of 86.

oakland, 74 degrees. so if you want to stay in the cooler zone, you will want to remain in half moon bay. only upper 50s, low 60s. san francisco will keep its chill factor especially if you will be there through the evening hours because that cloud cover and the fog will make its return tonight and early tomorrow morning. in a vat t novato, 80. and so again, it will remain cry through about 12:00 and then we see the chance of the thunderstorms really start to pop up. and when you see lightning, remember to head indoors. safety first. so travel will be okay the next couple of hours and then it will get a little tricky. it will dry out again tomorrow morning and then another round of showers for tomorrow. but for san francisco, 61 into sunday. and then monday and tuesday, this is when we start seeing the preview of summer. we get high pressure that rolls in, and it will dry us out and warm us up, we are talking 70

good saturday morning, everyone. june 1, 2019. a live picture for you from down ton san jose. skies a little gray, but it will clear up and be a nice day. i'm garvin thomas. vianey is keeping an eye on the forecast. everyone wanting to know where am i going to have fun this weekend. >> it is a very whacky may. so june will stabilize us i hope. woodside, notice up above we have clear skies and then you see the fog and clouds off in the distance there. the low clouds hanging out. but don't worry, if you do want to get away from the coastline because it is a little too cloudily for you, once you make your way inland, here are the temperatures you can look forward to. so we will be climbing into the low to mid-80s for the south bay, a little further into the interior valley, concord, tri-valley area, we're talking upper 80s. and into oakland, east bay area,

pride month kicks off today. and one city in the east bay is already flying the flag. richmond raised its rainbow flag in front of city hall as a show of support. not being expressed by everyone. last week we told you that dublin city council voted down flying the flag. antioch postponed its decision for two weeks. the state's top teacher tried to break a logjam because the new haven school district and striking teacher, but he didn't have any luck. yesterday marked day nine of the strike. key issue you is salary. the district had offered a 3% one time bonus for the school year with more next year. the teachers asked for 3.7% with more next year. we're told there was some movement, but still no agreement. the family of a man who died after sheriff deputies tased and pepper sprayed him is suing san mateo county.

last october the man was killed in a confrontation with deputies who tried to stop him for jay walking. the man who has a history of mental illness was unarmed. the d.a. declined to file charges against the deputies and the man's sister says this is a human rights situation. >> it should not be that human being can be killed, can be violently killed, can be tortured to death with absolute impunity. that is why we will continue to fight. >> an internal review is ongoing. keeping up with the kardashians, all wait to death row. kim kardashian made a visit to san quentin. the reality star met with kevin cooper, an inmate, for about two hours. she tweeted this picture. kardashian is an apprentice with a bay area organization that focuses on criminal justice reform. cooper was convicted of killing a couple and their two children

and sentenced to death. cooper has maintained his innocence, insisting that he was framed. back in october kardashian tweeted governor brown asking him to add cooper to his, quote, legacy of smart fair thoughtful criminal justice reform. we have more door issues for muni. doors that are randomly opening and closing. in the last seven months, riders have got caught in closing doors on four separate occasions. muni is investigating a door that opened on a crowded train two weeks ago, it opened because of a loose wire. muni will now inspect the wire connections of nearly 150 cars over the next five days. many residents are sick of hearing this sound and it may lead to a lawsuit. the city is considering suing union pacific railroad over late night freight train noise.

the mayor and multiple city council members are urging the city attorney to look into a lawsuit. they say the train schedule as changed and is disruptive to people living downtown. what is happening in the water? a troubled number of gray whales washing ashore. and now the feds are declaring it a national emergency. 70 gray whales dead off the coast of california, oregon, washington and alaska just this year. the most in nearly 20 years. here is a man of all the whales we've seen here from the peninsula up to pt. reyes and even inside the bay. half were struck by ships, others died from malnourishment nourishment. still ahead, will kd play? we have the latest on on kevin durant's injury and the warriors latest time table for his return to the nba finals.

showcasing a lot of the cloud cover. but we're still monitoring the trough sparking some thunderstorms just north of us. and it will continue to bring the chance of rain to the sierra. so if you have plans to travel up to the sierra, keep in mind that your window for seeing no rain is pretty much right now through about 12:00. because once we head toward the afternoon, the thoorms will thu will be popping up and temperatures in the 60s. and we keep the rain all day in through tonight. and then we get a little break tomorrow morning and then we continue to see the rain tomorrow evening. so that travel window is closing this on you. so make sure to check those travel conditions before you head out. if you will be staying here locally, you don't have to worry about the rain further inland. look at the south bay, temperatures will be climbing into the 80s for today. 82 in san jose. 84 through morgan hill. and we get a good variation of temperatures through the east bay. oakland 74, but if you travel just a little bit further inland through concord, we're talking

about a 10 degree difference for concord. 86. again, the coastline will be slow to clear. we'll get partial clearing from all the fog and cloud cover, but because we're seeing the cloud cover, it will keep the temperatures at bay from heating up. so we'll stay on the cooler sidsid side. san francisco will stay in the mid-60s. santa rose, 79. novato 80. and this will set us up for a preview of what we can expect looking ahead toward summerlike temperatures. we will wake up with the morning fog tomorrow. 61 because of all the cloud cover. but as we head toward monday, the low that has been keeping the temperatures cooler will make its exit and now high pressure will come in and as we head toward monday and tuesday, it will certainly warm us up to a little bit more junelike around here. 70 in san francisco expected on tuesday. and then the high pressure will

welcome back. it is time for our clear the shelters segment with our friends from pets in need. martha is here with venice. tell us about venice and her many litter. >> many siblings. she is a cattle dog mix, about 14 weeks old. and she has 11 other siblings that are living with us right now. >> where did venice come from? >> she came from the central valley. beyond that, i don't know. but i know that she has 12 all together. >> and obviously venice is

pretty chill right now. >> she is pretty chill. doesn't mean the others are. they are puppies and they will be large puppies. and they will turn into large dogs. she is very cool. she is chill. probably my favorite of the twef12 because she is more mellow. but she are all wonderful dogs. i think they will need a little bit of spatce, but they can go into any home. >> and you guys have some success. >> yes, a record breaker. we have done 158 adoptions in redwood city alone, which is our record. >> in just one month? >> just one month. >> the month of may, 158 adoption. >> total for both locations, about 220. so that is 220 adoptions, lives saved. and if you had don't a dog, you are actually saving two lives because you are opening up a room for us to rescue another.
