7:13 am
i had the white house chief of staff on this morning. they really can't articulate exactly what they want mexico to do other than seal your southern border better. there is no carrot offerings here, if you will. it is being universally panned among even immigration hawks, if you will. they think the president has gone too far in the treatment of mexico. politically, he has invited a huge problem for republicans in texas and arizona. it is important to his economy. he doesn't care about offending california. >> harris ranks third according to the latest polls. given her presence and speech at the state party convention, is this the opportunity to move up, for is the field just too cluttered? >> i don't know if the field is -- i suspect the field is too
7:14 am
cluttered right now. i don't think that these are moments that she can use, or any candidate is going to be able to use right now to distinguish themselves. i think it is quite difficult to maneuver right now. but she will have a couple of debates. i think the debates are a better place to sort of carve out a space in this campaign a little bit. look, i do think she is still looking to carve out a place that you sort of know exactly what she's trying to do. i think she is trying to be the bridge between the progressive wing and establishment wing. but she has not been able to find a voice that articulates that very well. in california, it was a reminder of her political strength out there. but i still think she needs more time on the table outside california to distinguish herself >> the san francisco-based speaker of the house pelosi continues to hold the line by house democrats.
7:15 am
in light of mueller's near directive for congress last wednesday, do you think maybe this new information will force pelosi to change her strategy? >> larry, she's going to do this by the vote count, pure and simple. and right now the vote count says no impeachment. it's very possible when they come back from memorial recess, they're on the second week. they will be back a week from monday. if it is suddenly 150 democrats instead of 50 calling for impeachment, i think you will hear her voice change. the biggest problem is this debate looks purely political. either they are not going to do it to focus 2020 or waiting until they have a political consensus from the public to start the process. either way i think they have gone trapped in the viewing impeachment through a political prism. >> always wonderful insight. love hearing your point of view on all of this. we will see you a bit later. thanks, chuck. >> all right. >> be sure to join chuck for
