and dear to prince charles' heart. an issue where he and the president don't see eye to eye. a possible tension point. that said, president trump is a fan of the queen. he has enjoyed his previous visits. this is his first official state visit, which means the queen is formally hosting the trump family. but he has been to the uk for a working visit in the past and me so far, we have seen no breaches of protocol. meghan markle is home with her young infant son archie, he and prince harry just had a baby. president trump was asked in an interview about the comments that markle made prior to him becoming elected. president trump called her

nasty. he hopes she's doing well. she's married into that royal family. there are some interesting points to watch here on the royal side. as president trump gets ready for a day of real pomp and pageantry, this is what he likes best. the centerpiece of today's visit will be a state banquet later on tonight. savannah. >> hallie, stand by there. we await some of the formal welcomes that are about to happen at buckingham palace. the president having just walked inside, greeted by the queen and prince charles and camilla. let's go the keir simmons. he's just outside buckingham palace, keir, you're a local, how is this visit being received? >> savannah, there were cheers outside buckingham palace here as marines one swooped down behind buckingham palace.

the royal standard flying over buckingham palace that the queen is in residence. an entourage of the royal family that will meet the president. these state visits are about the royal family. this is a diplomatic dance that will be done in the coming days. first, though, we're waiting for the president to inspect the guards, who are at the back of buckingham palace there. some changes to this state visit. normally that inspection would take place at the front of the palace, it's happening at the bah back because perhaps of security reasons. no american president has done that gnd again perhaps for security reasons. president obama were afforded a state visit like this. they didn't chose to ride

through the mile in that way. of course, president trump won't be staying here at buckingham palace because of renovation work. half a billion dollars of renovation work. the president might want to inspect that and give his views. throughout the day we'll see him have an informal lunch including with prince harry, which will be an interesting interaction given those press reports of the comments from the president about meghan. then, he'll go to westminster b abbey scene of so many events here. the wedding of charles and diaae all those decades ago. he'll lay a wreath at the tomb of an unknown warrior. there will be an afternoon tea with charles and camilla. again, as hallie was saying, that will be an interesting

interaction given that prince charles and trump are around the same age but hold different views. prince charles believes climate change is a real threat. conversations may come up but the british royal family in the end are professional diplomats. this trip is all about the diplomacy. all about britain putting his best foot forward. in the background, you can hear the 82-gun salute for the president's arrival more than the normal 41 guns salute because it's for the queen's coronation and for this state's visit as the president might like to say, a huge gun salute. >> yeah, we hear them right there. the president of course is coming to london at a time of internal turmoil there with the prime minister may, i believe this is her last week in office. she was forced to step down over brexit and we see him in some of the interviews that he did in
4:24 am
the lead-up to this visit, dabbling a bit in british politics. >> reporter: some eyebrows, but to be honest that's not to be -- that's not unexpected. no one here expected that president trump would arrive not engaging in politics. this state visit is about the british royal family. he'll visit with prime minister theresa may tomorrow. therere reports of some back and forth between downing street and the president entourage over whether president trump will meet with nigel farage, the politician who leads that campaign. this is a time of political turmoil here in the uk, a very, very difficult time, but i suppose you could say in a sense
4:25 am
that's what the british royal family, they stand above the politics, they're the constitutional monarchy and the hope will be and i suspect that this will be the case even if there are some faux pas as we go along, but ultimately this will be seen as a successful trip. >> the images show the president's adult children are here, i can trembers of the tru family are there and we're starting to see some of that royal rollout you've been telling us about as we see the traffic of the er ceremonial st visit. gathered there on the balcony to witness it. hallie, what would you say the president's goal here? i mean, obviously, often spoken about the u.s.'s special relationship with britain. what's the state of that relationship right now. i know the president has been talking about getting a trade

deal with the uk? >> reporter: that's right. both the president and prime minister may have talked about what a close and important bond that both of these countries have. as we look at that balcony trip. treasury secretary steve mnuchin is here. the president trump may deliver a stern message to may. over the chinese company huawei. a sticking point between these two nations. on national security perspective and diplomatic perspective as well. the united states wants the uk to do less business with the chinese company awei. more broadly when you talk about trade, real question marks. this remarkable moment of extraordinary political chaos in the uk. at the end of this week, theresa may will no longer be the leader of toris. it's much more of a caretaker

role. after friday, loses all the power and authority that she's had. one of her last acts in office will be this meeting with president trump, series of events this week. this is such a critical time for the president to be here. he wants a bilateral trade deal between the u.s. and uk. until the uk can work its own deal with the eu, there will be real question marks about whether and when president trump will be able to get that done. he'll have to hold off uk hits that october 31st deadline. to make a deal with eu for brexit or get out with no deal. >> over to keir, who's got his eyes on the politics. how is the state visit being received over there? this is the first time he's been given the honor of a state
4:28 am
visit, on the left of our screens there, we can see what that means at buckingham palace right there. the royal guard assembled in all of its finery. what does it mean not just in terms of th relationship? >> it's suc answer. i'd answer it like this, the country ukpolitically. as you can imagine it's veryngn there are certainlyan opposed t visit. there are also many british people who believe it's a good idea. after all in the end, the uk sits in a unique position as an island in the atlantic, off of europe, looking to america with all the history between the two countries. whether a trade deal can be done between britain and the u.s., i
4:29 am
mean, that depends on so many factors. negotiations continuing between britain and europe because europe's deal with britain as part of the european union makes it impossible for an independent trade deal to be done. so, so many question marks. i think in terms of the mayor of london, sadiq khan and thateen q khan is a politician, there are many voters in london who don't like president trump and so politically, from his point of view, it's advantages you to get into an argument with the president of that nature and perhaps president trump thinks it's politically advantages you to him. who knows. but crucially as we watch these pictures of the pomp and ceremony outside of buckingham palace, the idea will be to try
