boston and st. louis. it begins in 30 minutes. a tremendous loss a mother died after slipping and falling over a water fall at lake tahoe. we're hearing from her children. >> the mother had just opened a new business. >> that's right. her children say she dreamed all of her life of opening her own skin care salon. she did just that. her children made this sign. tonight they say they are so grateful and proud of all she accomplished. >> she knows so much about life and love and how to treat people. >> she had these eyes you get lost in. >> they dwib their mother thought them all they know. >> we're all out doors. we love nature and care about animals and plants and the world.

>> at 35, she died on friday. visiting one of the places she loved most. emerald bay. the east bay woman was sitting in a pool of water and slipped and was swept over the water falls. >> i think of all the places she could have possibly gone. that was the place. she loved it there. >> her children say they take comfort in knowing their mother died in a place where she felt at home. they say she'll always be with them. >> we all know we have her. she's everywhere now. she gets to be everything. >> her children tell me she was in tahoe on friday. the to celebrate a friends birthday visiting those water falls that she loved so much. they say they will continue on maintaining the values she taught them. >> our thoughts are with the

family. the woman accused of a wild hit and run chase last week in san francisco appeared in court today for the first time. she injured four people including one critically. she game before a judge and pleaded not guilty to 18 charges including evading police. and multiple charges of assault leading to serious bodily injury. one pedestrian was pinned against scaffolding and another quote tossed like a rag doll. a judge denied bail after her attorney says she suffers from mental illness. >> she was diagnosed with by-polar disorder. depression and the slew of other disorders. since a teenager. and she has been off medication. >> the next court date is next week. one bit of news the pedestrian is out of a coma and recovering. >> we have details on the explosion that rattled nerves in over the week. this isn't the first time the

company has been under investigation. according to cal osha there have been two previous investigations at the company. air products and chemicals. those were at the l.a. location. on saturday this is what you're looking at. lt fire and explosion. on norman avenue. while filling up a high troe general tanker workers discovered a leak. nobody was hurt. >> a hump back whale is drawing big crowds. she's been there for a week now. tonight we learn more about her. we have been talking with scientists and you have learned why they think she's here in the first place. >> they believe this whale is ailing maybe injured or sick. but here resting in this lagoon. he's been here for a week. we have been seeing her come to the surface about every 60 seconds or so. >> you get the best view of the whale from here.

up in the air. dozens of people have come out to the bay this afternoon to catch a water line glimpse of the animal. >> it's amazing. >> researchers say the whale is an adult but under sized because she is so skinny. >> we have gone out in a boat and gotten close to it. it doesn't have the normal fat and blubber layer. >> bill has been studying hump backs in the bay since 2016. ever since the animals started coming in to feed on fish. this whale is not feeding. >> it's coming to a very restricted protected area. very calm waters. where it's resting. and that's something we have not seen before. >> this year we have seen large in your opinions of gray whales wash up dead on the west coach beaches. 70 of them so far. like this hump back most have been malnourished. they believe there's a connection. >> we're seeing food sources

abundant and disappearing. that is increasing over time. >> obviously changes in the climate are impacting the ocean food supply. but scientists need is to collect data over a long period of time. to better understand what's happening. >> hopefully through awareness and people understanding what the issues are in the ocean that we can raise funds to better understand what's going on. >> yesterday spectators were treated to the site of the whale breeching jumpily nearly out of the water and coming down with a thunder boom. a couple theories, she could be trying to create a sound to send a signal or could be trying to dislodge crustaceans or parasites that are bothering her. thank you. a deadly shooting in walnut creek prompted a lot of questions. did police officers cross the line? last night around 5 a man named miles threatened his own family and a neighbor. with a crowbar.

this was on orchard lane. near 680 and south main. officers fired bean bag rounds at the man. which had no effect. two offices fired handguns which continued and he continued to charge at them. >> i don't know whether he was charging them or trying to get -- he was running towards them. and they say stop. and bing bing. three or four shots. >> the man later died at the hospital. police say there's body cam footage of what happened and it will be released. >> three people shot one fatally at a gas station in fair field. details are limited. with know it happened around midnight on north texas street. gunfire erupted leaving one person dead. another person in critical condition. a thrd person walked into a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries. that person was arrested for murder and attempted murder. >> the city of san francisco

might shell out big bucks to a mother of a man shot kp killed by police. a settlement in the death of woods. from december 2015. if approved the city will play his mother $400,000. woods death led to community out rage and black lives movement. he was armed with a knife and under the influence. he was walking away when they shot him. the city attorney office says quote in this case the officers response to the risky situation was consistent with training and with the law. the settlement allows us to reach a resolution without trial. >> school is almost out. that strike continues in the east bay. still no deal for the teachers at the new haven school district. some say there's a lack of urgency on the district part. a teachers have been off the job in hayward skb union city. since may 20. today teachers from oakland join the protest. teachers went on strike earlier this year.

new haven unified has more money in the budget than oakland. where's the solution? >> there's no urgency by the school district. no negotiations during the first four and a half days of the strike. they understood the urnl si to settle the strike and get the kids in school. this school board is out to lunch. >> a time is of the essence. high school students take the final exams next week. >> apple fans will have to say good-bye to a long time staple of the iphone universe. they are getting new gadgets and software. the company showed it off today kicking off the annual world word developer conference. we're at the conference in san jose with the highlights and the big headline. >> most of the talk ahead of today was about setting i tunes aside and to be honest most of the talk was right. apple is moving towards the mobile world with a big help of healthcare and brand new hardware.

san jose is reminding everyone it's time to start watching out for illegal fire works. firefighters turned on the reporting tool. report directly to police from a computer or phone. firefighters say people can take a photograph or video of the illegal display and up load the image directly onto the city web site. >> we hope the picture shows us the person that's delivering the fire works.

not the fire works in the sky. and you report the person who set it off. >> fire officials say the tool has been updated to prevent people from being falsely accused and fined. something that's been an issue in the past. >> someone in san francisco believes joe biden cannot win the next election. and they're willing to break the law to make sure you know it. taic a look. not your usual campaign sign. an exit sign on 101. someone spray painted the message. biden can't win michigan. analyst believe winning michigan will be crucial to winning the presidential race. >> it's hard enough to live on the street. for those who are members of the lgbtq community there's an additional set of dangers that come with being homeless. san jose in response is opening a new kind of shelter specifically to address those dangers. we took a tour of the new haven

inn. tell us about it. >> not only is the first shelter of its kind here. it's the second shelter of its kind in the united nation. it's located a couple of miles away from downtown san jose. and clients can stay here for up to three months possibly even longer. >> reporter: chris miller went from living under bridges to getting a good night sleep. >> i have been to most shelters in the south bay area. and i have never felt safer. >> that changed when he moved into this shelter in san jose. which is built specifically to help homeless in the lgbtq community. >> it's safe haven. a place why you don't fear violence or persecution. because of your path and sexual preference. >> it provide more than a bed and food. clients receive counselling and help finding jobs. since the numbers show 30% of all the homeless in the county

identify as lgbtq. >> many of them are finding themselves homeless after coming out. to family members and being rejected. >> aapproved the shelter after hearing troubling stories from homeless members of the lgbtq community. >> they struggle with violence and other issues. at regular shelters. >> as for chris he already has a place to live lined up. and for the first time in a long time, feels supported. >> you're respected and treated as a person. from the moment you walk in here. that's all the difference. >> skip is pulling its dockless scooters out of san francisco. for now. one of two companies licensed to operate in the city. and operates in washington d.c. here's why. skip is suspending service. one of the scooters in dc caught fire last week.

passing by. just really a nice afternoon. but it was warmer right now 85. humidity 38%. that air is dry. as it's moving in which will increase our fire danger certain lu as we head throughout the week. you have a nice evening coming your way. dropping to the 70s. and then eventually 60s moving in by 9:00 and 10:00. if you thought it was too hot hold on. tomorrow things get hotter. we have an area of high pressure building in. that will bring the warm air. the first 90s we have seen this year. so it's kind of all of a sudden coming up fast. after all that may rain and cool temperatures. we had 70s in certainly no 90s. the first average 90 degree day is may 11. we are behind. as it creeps in tomorrow it might get uncomfortable. the good thing about this warm air it's going to be dry. there will be less in the way of

fog than we have been used to. nice easy start. temperatures in the upper 50s and low 60s from the south bay. we could have a little bit of patchy fog near the san francisco coast. possibly towards santa cruz. otherwise you'll have the sunglasses on tomorrow. we hit the afternoon, temperatures will warm up and fast. down in the south bay i put 90s back on the board. we're in the low 90s over to san jose. some of the hottest weather inland. where the tucked away from ocean breeze. you can see how the numbers spike up. 93 concord. not so bad in oakland. you get a bay breeze 78. peninsula 85. san mateo a warm 80. san francisco you want the warm spot head to the mission. 72 degrees. over to the marina 66. and across napa county the

the discrimination trial under way in the case against wine country chef. thomas keller. an employee claims she was denied a job transfer and let go because she was pregnant. then in 2016 she wanted to transfer to kelers restaurant. in napa valley. she says management asked her how long she planned to take for maternity leave and within a week she was told there was no position for her there. she's seeking $5 million in damages. they haven't issued a statement. >> tense moments involving a bear in a napa neighborhood. spotted on cooper court near the shopping center. last friday. the bear scrambled up the tree and got comfortable on the high branchs. firefighters used a ladder and tranquilize it. it fell from the tree. onto a shed down below. but the bear was not hurt.
