bit. you know, you lose not everything, but you're losing a lot. >> reporter: in pine bluff, arkansas, evacuation orders are in effect. this neighborhood is devastated. several dozen homes are underwater and the river is expected to crest here wednesday. >> a lot of people had time to get a lot of belongings out. nobody realized it was going to be this significant. >> reporter: it's been a slow motion disaster? >> it has. >> reporter: it's been a devastating year mid-western rivers have flooded several times since march causing billions of dollars in damage to farmland, homes, and businesses in illinois today volunteers are fighting to hold back the mississippi river. >> that's a lot of water that we haven't seen since 1993. this is now our second most severe flood on record. >> reporter: the town has battled floodwaters for week. >> they are canceling one by one. >> reporter: alison runs a bed and breakfast and says her business is down 80%. >> i just can't imagine it's not going to get worse

i hate to say it, but when it peaks, i hope it goes down fast for a lot of people's sake >> reporter: back here in arkansas, it is a beautiful sunrise. it is revealing very difficult scenes for many folks here this is a slow motion disaster with no end in sight vice president pence is scheduled to tour parts of flood-ravaged oklahoma later today. >> you look at these pictures from high above in pine bluff, arkansas, your heart goes out to the folks there. now to some disturbing new information in the case of a connecticut mother of five who disappeared more than a week ago. court documents from the arrest of her estranged husband and his girlfriend reveal items containing traces of the woman's blood have been recovered. kristen dahlgren has the latest on this. >> reporter: good morning. the search is expected it continue as this case takes that grim turn. police say they believe the mother of five was a victim of a

serious physical assault this morning chilling new details coming to light in the case of a missing mother of five as the search continues for 50-year-old jennifer dulos, her estranged husband fotis dulos and his girlfriend are charged in her disappearance they are accused of tampering with or fabricating physical evidence and hindering prosecution. >> more charges are coming. >> reporter: according to the arrest warrants officers investigating the disappearance searched jennifer dulos' home and observed multiple stains on the garage floor which tested positive for blood multiple areas of blood spatter, an evidence of attempts to clean the crime scene. according to investigators, cell phone tracking data shows that on the night of jennifer's disappearance the defendants traveled together to the state capital hartford stopping at 30 different locations.

multiple surveillance cameras caught individuals matching the defendants dumping trash bags containing items, including clothing and a sponge according to the warrants. those items found to contain jennifer dulos' blood. jennifer dulos was last seen dropping off her children at school may 24th. her suv was found near a park in new canaan which has been heavily searched. the bond for the defendants set at $500,000. the prosecutor requesting both surrender their passports and submit to gps monitoring this morning dulos remains in custody while troconis posted pond monday afternoon. now, the defendants did not enter pleas. their attorneys declined our request for comment. this morning a town-wide alert has gone out asking for any security footage that shows the roads around here. authorities hoping that will

give them more clues, guys. >> big developments there. thank you. now to a mystery in paradise that has the family of a texas couple searching for answers this morning the pair dying while on vacation in fiji after apparently coming down with an unknown illness nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer has that story for us good morning. >> david and michelle paul were on a dream vacation half a world away, but "the associated press" reports the fort worth couple suddenly died unexpectedly with authorities in the south pacific country saying an unidentified illness was responsible. their family back here in the u.s. now coping with the tragic loss >> reporter: family and friends of michelle and david paul say the couple had been planning their dream vacation to fiji for some time. >> they were very excited. they have never been in this place. >> reporter: michelle a former student athlete and david an air force veteran apparently falling ill just one day before they were expected to return home to

fort worth, texas. michelle's father, mark, telling nbc news his daughter contacted him to say the couple wasn't feeling well and planned to go to a local clinic. >> then the next day they decided to go to the hospital. both of them are experiencing the same kinds of sickness. >> reporter: despite medical care, their conditions worsened, dying a few days apart. >> nobody tell me what was the cause of the death and that's very hard for me. >> reporter: a u.s. state department spokesperson confirming the couples death to nbc news saying they are closely monitoring local authorities' investigation into the cause of death. news of the tragedy shocking friends and family back at home. the pair leaving behind their 2-year-old son and david paul's daughter from a previous relationship. >> people call my wife she cries very hard.

forecast. >> i wish we had better news for our friends in the plains and the mississippi river valley, but we don't strong storms firing up texas into oklahoma. we have a risk of severe weather today from texas all the way to minnesota. we are talking about 60 million people luckily, the tornado threat it low. we have damaging winds, hail, heavy rain tomorrow. it stretches from illinois into the mid-atlantic 22 million people. and we can't rule out tornados here is the problem. we have got this tropical disturbance in the gulf. it's going to meander. it's weak, but it enhances the moisture flow into the gulf. as that happens we are going to looking a heavy rain, moderate risk of flooding from texas to louisiana. the heaviest rain is going to be in the gulf, more rain from missouri, oklahoma, and arkansas i wish we had better news, but this is pretty bad we are talking about upwards of ten inches of rain through the gulf but look into the mississippi river valley the arkansas river, the missouri river, the mississippi river looking at anywhere from two to five inches of rain by the time we get to friday that is not good news for those river levels we will get to your local forecast coming up in the next

in a written statement the boy's mother said to him, quote, god will judge you some day and i have peace with that i am done with you. now to the latest in the college admissions scandal lawyers representing more than a dozen parents, including lori loughlin, packed a courtroom yesterday and revealed part of their strategy suggesting their money was intended for charity, not a bribe. of the 33 parents charged, half have taken plea deals. 19 others still fighting charges. also this morning a 17-year-old girl recovering from severe injuries after she was attacked by a shark at a north carolina state park. officials are crediting her survive to the heroic actions of her father nbc's kerry sanders is on atlantic beach for us. kerry, good morning. >> reporter: that is correct the 17-year-old is likely alive because of the heroics of her father he is a paramedic and former

marine who took on the shark that grabbed his daughter in its jaws with its fist, repeatedly punching experts believe this was a bull shark. one of the top three most aggressive sharks in the ocean the devastating 911 call. >> there has been a shark attack there is somebody in the water bleeding. >> reporter: the victim 17-year-old paige winter. >> her leg is almost gone. she needs probably life-flighted out. i don't know if she is going to make it, man. she's in bad shape >> reporter: the high school junior made it and now says she is grateful to be alive. the attack happening on sunday in waist-deep waters off the north carolina coast her father a paramedic, swimming by her side, is being hailed a hero for fighting off the shark, punching the predator repeatedly until it let go. his quick actions helping save her life. >> i'm sure they did 100%. >> reporter: the scene not an easy one to witness. >> she was responsive and

talking. obviously, in a lot of pain. >> reporter: doctors were forced to amputate paige's left leg above the knee she suffered other serious injuries in the unprovoked shark attack, yet her spirits remain high she released a statement from her hospital bed saying in part, although i have extensive injuries, including an amputated leg and damage to my hands, i will be okay i know i have a long road to recovery, which includes additional surgeries i will continue to stay positive and be thankful that it was not worse. experts say shark attacks remain rare in 2018, there were 66 recorded attacks worldwide, down from 84 in 2017. this season has already seen a fatal shark attack in maui where a 65-year-old man died despite losing her leg, paige is not blaming the shark. her mother posting on social media that paige still has her

sense of humor, saying she wants everyone to know that sharks are still good people. >> good to hear that paige is having a positive attitude about this, kerry. it looks like people are lending her and her family a hand as well online. what more do we know about that? >> reporter: well, absolutely, craig. first of all, recovery, it is a very long road a prosthetic leg can cost upwards of $50,000 lifetime medical costs can exceed $500,000. so the family's friends have set up a gofundme page for paige to help her out through all of this remember, this happened here at a state park because governments are indemnified, if they were to sue it's likely there would be nobody ultimately to pay for any sort of negligence it's really falling on the help of so many who have started to help out paige in what will be a very, very long journey for her. >> i would guess that gofundme page is probably going to climb.

good morning. 8:56. i'm kris sanchez. a health alert for parents and children who attend one south bay school. about a dozen students went home sick yesterday from morgan hill nordstrom's elementary school after getting violently ill. health experts say they think it is the norovirus. the school brought in cleaning crews and bleached one classroom and seven other rooms, including the front office.
