4:30 pm
stanley cup final on nbc bay area. the game in boston starts at 5:00. we begin with the warriors drama involving one of the team's investors. the nba took swift action. mark stevens, who you see in the blue shirt right there, in the middle, you can see him shove kyle lowery and yell obscenitied at him. he's now banned from all nba games for one year and fined $500,000. >> his ownership stake in the warriors is approximately $250 million. let's begin with christy smith at the oracle. >> reporter: today, there was a lot of support for kyle lowery, and how he handled himself in a difficult situation. he said he was shoved and cursed at, and only learned later it was the warsriors co-owner.
4:31 pm
kyle lowery landed in the seats, trying to save a ball. >> a guy like that showing his true class and he shouldn't be a part of our league. it's just no place for that. >> reporter: lowery says he was furious but kept his school. he said stevens cursed at him, too. the nba banned stevens from games and team events for a year and fined him $500,000. what is's fair is fair, right? it sounded like the league suspended him. it seems to me it was the right move. >> reporter: the warriors announced they would not allow him to attend all team events and apologized for what it called misconduct. coach steve kerr said he had not seen the play, only the commotion afterwards and added this. >> i will also personally apologize to kyle and to the raptors. >> reporter: steph curry had this reaction.
4:32 pm
>> credit kyle the way he handled it. >> reporter: stevens owns a minority stake in the team and is a well known venture capitalist. lowery said he was just focused more on the performance on the court. >> it sucks this has to take the front page of the finals. it's been a fun finals. it's been a competitive finals. >> reporter: curry went on to say that you certainly don't want to see something like this happen in a game. but he also said he didn't think it was reflective of how the organization the warriors handled business. reporting live, christy smith, nbc bay area news. >> thank you, christy. this has exploded into a league wide story. superstar lebron james took to instagram saying there was absolutely no place in the game for this kind of behavior, especially coming from a part owner. and stated --
4:33 pm
>> so who exactly is mark stevens? before today, he lived a relatively quiet life. but not any more. he's a billionaire, he owns a little less than 10% of the warriors. his buy-in was $250 million. now, the usc and harvard grad was a managing partner at sequoia capital what he invested in google, paypal and linked in. and served on the board of nvidia. stevens now works at his family firm. here are the offices here on the peninsula. forbes estimates his real net worth at $2.3 billion. his actions last night and the league's response late today speaks volumes. sam brock joins us in oakland where the nba commissioner is also at an event where you are,
4:34 pm
sam. >> reporter: raj, you mentioned lebron james. he said in that instagram post that he is fearful of privilege, or at least the perception of privilege. if there weren't swift action taken. but obviously there was. minutes ago, some of the most powerful people in the nba universe were on stage behind me, including adam silver, the commissioner, the executive director of the nba players association and the president of the warriors. none of them on stage addressed this incident. they're here for an nba care learn and play center unveiled here in oakland. but they did delve into the idea that the warriors have driven growth, expansion, and class in the nba with what they've done on and off the court here in oakland. so of course what happened with mr. stevens and kyle lowery, when he goes into the stands last night and he's shoved and on scene words and gestures were made, that required immediate action according to the nba, which came down with its
4:35 pm
decision today. here's what adam silver said. >> anyone who is part of an nba team or part of our organization should be held to a higher standard. >> reporter: to follow up on this, i asked adam silver how did this mesh or not mesh with what the warriors have done with what your message was to 215 countries around the world about class and how the warriors responded. he said the warriors responded exactly the right way, that an investor made a horrible mistake and punished swiftly. those were his responses. i'm about to interview the guy responsible for what kind of punishment will receive. in this case, $500,000 and one-year ban to all warriors team activities, period. much more on that coming up at 8:00. reporting live, sam brock, nbc bay area news. >> thanks, sam. the biggest issue facing the warriors, the players, is

4:37 pm
defensible space around their property. >> firefighters urge everybody to use caution while outdoors. with fire season now here, a bay area company is giving the public a glimpse of what can make things safer for homeowners in the future. a fire resistant home, using a lot of metal instead of wood. robert? >> reporter: that's right. we're here up on this hill to give you a view of this sprawling 6,000 square foot frame. at first glance, it's hard to believe it's supposed to be a home because of all the metal, but that's the appeal here in wildfire country. metal doesn't burn. the framework is visually impressive inside as it is outside. they invited city officials and fire agencies to see what it called fire resistant
4:38 pm
innovation. >> california has so much fire hazards, and this is one of the solutions. >> reporter: cal fire says the concept still needs testing, but called it encouraging. >> we absolutely have to change our build environment to make california safer and more resilient. >> reporter: they want to get the price for frame to $300 per square foot. the steel structure is appealing says one realtor. >> so it would be fire retardant and have the insurance -- the insurance would be a lot less than a wood frame for the fire. >> reporter: another factor, getting workers used to steel. >> it's doable. >> reporter: what is the biggest obstacle? >> finding the workers or training them. >> reporter: the big appeal is safety. but the problem will be cost. since it still cost about 50% more to use steel than wood. but they say they learned a lot
4:39 pm
from build thing prototype and hopes to have the cost problem solved by the end of the year. >> robert, thank you. we have a follow up to a story from last night at 11:00. the search for a dwgunman continues in santa rosa. police say a fight broke out at a soccer game, someone got out and fired at least ten shots. the bullets hit four different people, including an 11-year-old and one of the soccer coaches. everyone thankfully is expected to survive. police say the shooting might have been gang related. in the south bay now, a deadly shooting in san jose. here's what we know. a little after midnight, a police officer heard shots fired near mcguiness avenue and story road. an officer arrived to find a man dead in a car. streets were closed in this area, until about 8:00 this

4:44 pm

you got outside to emjoy it. i do not have a fogood feeling about the weekend. we will see the fire danger increase. we've seen a major change for part of that weekend. we'll explain that coming up. let's get you outside to walnut creek. as mentioned, it was magnificent out there. lots of blue sky, currently 78 degrees. big departure from the mid 90s from the past couple of days. tonight, we have 60s, moving on in is that nice ocean breeze. you can get some of that nice air movement in under mostly clear skies. i don't see any problems for tomorrow morning. temperatures in the 50s for the south bay. some patchy fog near san francisco, not too thick and more 50s for the east bay. numbers only warm up a couple of degrees for tomorrow. that will leave us through san jose at 76. a little breezy, winds out of the northwest at 19.
4:48 pm
we are remaining here out of the 90s, through about i don't thinthin think -- through antioch and walnut creek. san francisco, cool 60s from the mission to the outer sunset. for napa, sonoma countcounties, 80s. tomorrow is the day to get outside. once we get to the weekend, by all accounts, it's looking like some very hot and dangerous weather moving in and increased fire danger. the big change is the cool air we're dealing with, moving off towards the east and a strong area of high pressure building in. that's not only going to bring the heat but now it also looks like a dry, breezy wind that will increase the fire danger. originally, it looked like on sunday it could see humidity. now we've seen a change in the wind in the other direction. you can see in san francisco, we're going up to a much warmer
4:49 pm
