the news starts right now. thanks so much for joining us. >> we're on with a special edition of nbc bay area news because of tonight's stanley cup final game. we start with breaking news out of the east game, a plane crash out of the delta a little more than two hours ago. a live look at our crew that just arrived on the scene. we learned the plane was a single engine piper. a dive team has been call today the scene. firefighters have found wreckage in the water and are searching for passengers. we'll bring you the latest as it comes in. the other top story, we are under a heat advisory. >> high fire advisory has fire crews on high alert today. >> a possible cause for a grass

fire in the south bay, but first let's check with rob. >> record breaking day for temperatures. something we haven't seen in term of 90-degree temperatures. san francisco, we haven't been there since september 2017 and we tied record high in san francisco both sfo and oakland airports breaking records. 95 today, 96 in santa rosa and it is still warm outside. check out san francisco where temperatures are still in the low 80s and the stage is set as we head towards tomorrow morning for a very quick warm up where the east bay valleys and areas south of san jose as early as lunchtime, we could see some upper 90s. so, another heat advisory posted tomorrow where it's out toward the tri-valley, concord. we'll let you know how much

longer this heat will stick around in about 12 minutes. let's get to nbc bay area where fire crews are still battling a grass fire. they have been for hours. you were talking about maybe information on the cause of the fire. >> reporter: indeed, we're on the site of a gun range just off malik road. this is the malik fire. and this firefighters say is the origin. you can see a huge char area on the hillside. it extend today the other side of that ridge. let's show video we just shot a few minutes -- bulldozers and they have heavy equipment at this hour. they are working to get the fire completely knocked down. the latest information is it is about 70% contained and it has spread to total of 210 acres. the first calls for for a grass fire just off highway 101. came in about 2:30 this

afternoon. cal fire put out a call for mutual aide. firefighters came from all over. they attacked from the air and ground as quickly as they could. the grass is bone dry here. it was hot and it was windy. one possibility they are investigating is whether or not the fire was started possibly by air rounds from the firing range. >> it started in a range area. the area was active with shooters at the time. however, there's a number of thungs that may have caused the incident -- that may have caused the fire. so, we'll be doing a thorough investigation to rule out potential causes to get to an actual cause. >> reporter: and indeed we're told that investigation started immediately. there are a number of firefighters on the area as they try to investigate and pin down what the cause was. but they're looking at that as a potential cause being the gun range here and the active firing at that range at the time. also we're told a number of firefighters will be here overnight to keep an eye on

this, make sure it does not get out of hand and try and get full containment. for now we are live near morgan hill. >> thank you, roz, for that update now. now for the fire burning in yolo county. good new, it's moving away from homes and firefighters are making progress. the fire is 20% contained. it grew by 100 acres overnight and burned 2,200 acres. it started yesterday afternoon near rumsee. the 140 people living on county road 41 have been evacuated. some of them came back to the area today to check on things, and they were reassured by what they saw. >> i saw when it started yesterday at 2:30 and i knew it was going to be bad. next thing you know, they evacuated us and we were on our way. this is much better. yesterday was really bad. >> smoke is drifted into parts of the bay area. the cause is unclear.

tense moments in marin county today and record heat in san francisco. >> reporter: the fire here thankfully was contained to less than an ache e but there were about a thousand pg&e customers without power for a couple hours. that was done as a safety precaution. in video posted on social media by the marin county fire department you can see burning brush around a power poll. witnesses say the smoke could be seen for miles. >> we could see down from the road, we could see a bunch of smo spoke rising from quite a distance, couple miles. >> the hotter and dryer the weather is, the more chance of catastrophic fire. we're lucky right now it's early in the season and moisture is lower than it could be so we're

able to catch this fire. >> reporter: in san francisco, temperatures reached into the low 90s in some parts of the city. cooling stations were available with air conditioning, but lots of people chose to stay outdoors. delores park is usually a space for people to soak up the sun, but we saw lots of people sneaking under the palm trees where it was a few degrees cooler. that fire is still under investigation. i'm sergio quinta na. thank you very much. customers in butte county have their power back on. the campfire started in butte county, so pg&e turned off the power to keep something similar from happening again this time. the power has been restored in other counties as well. giants fans going to today's game against the dodgers had to deal with the heat.

take the deal which includes two bonuses tote lg 4% and a provision for more money depending on the district's revenue. teachers began their strike may 20th. two teams of negotiators spent roughly 200 hours at the table coming up with this proposal. teachers are expected back in the classrooms tomorrow morning for the last week of school. how democrats have a busy week in their investigation in mueller's report. though president trump has declared it over, lawmakers have three straight days of hearings on the matter. >> no obstruction. no crime. >> president trump has declared the russia investigation case closed, but democrats have not closed the book. on monday the house judiciary committee will hold a hearing on possible presidential obstruction and other crimes as 61 house lawmakers push for impeachment.

afternoon at a sun california amusement park. smoke from a brush fire forced evacuation to six flags amusement park and the nearby hurricane harbor water park. this is video of social media of people rushing away from the huge cloud of spoke heading their way. the so-called sky fire started around noon today in valencia. the fire quickly spread to about 40 acres and park officials decided smoke was too thick for people nearby. to dramatic footage of a crane that came crashing down on an apartment building in dallas today. >> oh, my god. >> see it out there in the distance? it happened during severe weather, specifically strong wind gusts, up to 70-miles-per-hour. people say one person is dead, more are injuried.

you can see the crash ripped a large gash into the side of an apartment building. the force was so powerful that several floors of a parking structure collapsed. new tonight search crews have found the remain of a missing texas police chief. chris reed was on a fishing boat with his wife when it was hit by a large wake on friday knocking reed into the water. coast guard and about 25 agencies joined in the search which covers 650 miles and lasted nearly 40 hours. his body was found today in a houston channel. >> we are deeply saddened by this devastating loss for chris's family, for our police department, for our community, and our heart felt condolences go out to chris and his family. >> reed was a retired army paratrooper and former city manager. many of the searchers knew him, considered it a personal mission to find his body.

his wife, though, was not injured. american airlines have grounded all boeing 737 max planes until september 3rd. the grounding was initially planned until august 19th. that means american will continue to cancel a total of 115 flights per day. the planes were grounded worldwide in mid-march following two deadly crashes. southwest and united will reopen the flights in august. boeing is working on upgrading the aircraft. we are following a developing story out of the mediterranean. a search operation has failed to find a passenger that fell off a cruise ship there. the search has been called off. the passenger fell overboard early saturday as that ship travelled near france. i want you to take a look at the new video. a 19th century sailboat is under water in germany. there's more to the story. the boat sunk after colliding

with a container ship near h hamburg. the crash happened yesterday injuring five people. the boat was recently restored. a 97-year-old veteran parachuted out of a plane today in france. he was commemorated the 75th anniversary of d-day. the military paratroopers came from all across europe and united states. they parachuted above the large crowd of observers. the jump concluded a week of events. a martinez man who stormed the beaches was there for the event all in commemoration of the invasion of normandy 75 years ago. jimmy carter returns to teaching sunday school three weeks after breaking his hip. here we see the former president sitting down for this church

what a day to escape from alcatraz. some of the best athletes around the world tried their best to do it. the annual triathlon saw athletes swim a mile and a half. there they go, from alcatraz island to shore. >> the air was hot, but the water is going to be cold. >> it's a little refreshing. from there they rode 18 miles on a bike followed by an 8-mile run through san francisco -- yeah, i would have been done a long time ago. ben kanuti was the top finishing

san matteo might be the same or trending cooler, but the tri-valley, east bay, hottest day is tomorrow. san matteo, we haven't seen in a long time, we broke record highs into the 90s. downtown tied a record, sfo, oakland, both. san francisco first time into the 90s since 2017 and what an event that was. september 1st and 2nd of 2017 we had an all-time record high of 106 degrees in san francisco, 102 the following day. that was the all-time record. thankfully nowhere near that territory today. tomorrow probably not getting there, but look at how nice it is right now. we've got a gorgeous sun set right now with warm temperatures. 80 in san francisco after a high of 91 degrees. 25 degrees above average today in san francisco. 88 degrees in dublin. we've got partly cloudy skies after a high of 93.

so, one thing to watch tomorrow, air quality. the second spare the air day. this time inland east bay and south bay. we'll see maybe on tuesday we might see one more issued for the inland east bay in terms of air quality. what's making for the beautiful sun set are the high clouds. you probably noticed that today. moving across the bay area. we'll continue to toss a few clouds our way but there's nothing really moisture-wise to block out the sun for tomorrow. future cast shows a few high clouds passing by at times. as we go through monday you can see it there in the future cast but nothing really limiting the heating of the day. we'll see a little bit of smoke in the north bay, maybe passing high clouds, but the stage set for another hot day tomorrow. here we'll call them, quote, low

temperatures as we start with the 60s. warm start to the morning, temperatures rising quickly, and 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. tomorrow, heat advisory which includes san francisco, inland valley. temperatures into the 90s and unfortunately triple digits on the map. south of san jose we could see temperatures approaches 105 temperatures. pittsburgh and concord are hottest temperatures. you saw oakland and hayward into the low 90s. peninsula tomorrow, san matteo was 92 degrees today. looks similar tomorrow. you can see downtown san francisco, upper 80s, close to 90 for one more day before cooler air arrives. so, now we're going to jump ahead to the tuesday forecast. notice by the afternoon how we

the peer review panel, the final step in getting the building back open. >> once the peer review panel is set aside with the efforts and results, then opening will begin. >> reporter: but the investigative unit has learned recent inspections may explain the delay. those inspections show more than 50 types of welded inspections. those recent inspections found what are being call weld defects in steel inconsistencies this time in the so-called jumbo columns that hold up the structure. the worry is it resembles the cracks that forced the shutdown. tests on the steel of the jumbo columns found it was low in toughness. >> that was one of the reasons there was a failure on the structure to begin with. >> reporter: toughness is what makes it not crack.

the agency that is overseeing the peer review process. he says while steel is never perfect, there are big questions about whether flaws in steel could weaken critical areas. >> that's what they're doing right now, looking at the whole structure to see if there's places to have concern. >> reporter: while the terminal's director wouldn't talk in detail, he does say he isn't worried about the new finding. >> so far what is being discovered is no concern to the designer or peer review panel. >> reporter: all this means we're left waiting until the designer and panel says it's safe to reopen the multi-billion dollar building. jackson vander beckon, nbc news. still to come, a plane crash in the delta. we're on the scene gathering new information. >> and another crash, this one involving a car in the south bay, impacting drivers tonight. the closure in place because of the crash.

we continue to follow breaking news out of the east bay, a plane crashed into the water in antioch. a dramatic search in the east bay tonight. >> the plane went down in the delta in antioch about three hours ago now. >> that's right. here's a look at the scene of the crash. we've learned the plane was a single engine piper. a dive team has been called to help with the search and rescue. firefighters say they've found wreckage in the water. they're searching for passengers now. this is a new picture of pittsburgh police officers helping with the search. we will bring you the latest at 11:00. >> you probably felt it earlier today when you were outside, the weather. >> that's right. a heat advisory is in effect. this is a live look at san francisco. >> wow. >> gorgeous sunset. we just can't stop oohing and ahhing at it. rob is tracking the record breaking temperatures. >> yeah, even though the

temperatures are cooling off, it's nice to be outside in the evening. we've had highs in most of the peninsula we haven't seen since 2017. good enough to tie a record in downtown san francisco and breaking records in sfo and oakland airports. you see mid-90s today in santa rosa. right now san jose 85 degrees and you saw the sunset in san francisco where we're still hanging on to 80 degree temperatures outside here after 8:00. the stage will be set tomorrow morning, starting with 60s or 70s. you may not need a jacket as early as 7:00 in the morning. another heat advisory tomorrow. east bay valley, south bay too could see highs hotter than today. in addition another spare the air day where air quality will get a little worse. we'll let you know how long the air quality issue, fire danger, and heat will be sticking around

in the forecast coming up in 15 minutes. thank you so much. the brush fire burning north of morgan hill is now 70% contained. the so-called malik fire started about 2:00 this afternoon. the firefighters now have a handle on the flames. they expect to be on the scene overnight getting full containment and watching out for hotspots. the fire burned 210 acres, did not damage any homes or cause any evacuations. gun fur from a nearby shooting range is being investigated as a possible cause. hi fire danger and temperatures are being felt across the north bay. the threat of wild fires prompt prompted pg&e to cut services. christie smith has more from napa county. >> that's what really brought us out. >> reporter: the hot weather got people out to lake barry to cool

off. but high fire danger did not go unnoticed. >> it really is scary. just be safe, be cautious what you do, where you go. >> our power was off yesterday from about 6:00 in the morning to early evening. it was turned off by pg&e. >> this lady is staying in the neighborhood. she's relieved the power is back on, but it's only june. >> we're considering this our new normal unfortunately. >> reporter: yesterday, people here used generators as pg&e cut power to 1,700 customers to prevent wild fires. the utility equipment was blamed in last year's deadly campfire. and two fires broke out yesterday, one in the county. >> that one's closer, so i don't know if we're getting the smoke from that fire or the yolo

county fire or both. >> this lady wants the utility to do more. losing power is tough and gas is tough. >> we try to make sure we fill up the gas cans for the generator and we have food that we can eat without power, without a microwave, without a stove. >> reporter: christie smith, nbc bay area news. the sand fire burning in okay yolo county is moving away from homes. firefighters making good problem there. that fire is now 20% contained. it's burned more than 2,200 acres. this is the one that started yesterday afternoon northeast of lake barry. the cause of that fire is unclear. a warehouse party in san jose ended with gunfire early this morning. you can see people coming out with their hands up in the air. police say they know at least two men were shot. they drove themselves to the

hospital. not clear how many people in total were shot. >> beware of road closures in the south bay after a car crash fok hadded down a power pole. firefighters say that driver was trapped after crashing that car. crews were able to remove the driver from the car, get him to the hospital, pg&e secured the electrical line, but the downed line caused the road closure. the road is expected to remain closed until 8:00 tomorrow morning. the new haven school district teacher strike is over. the union just announced a tentative agreement has been ratified. 6 # 0% of members voted to take the deal which includes a 4% bonus and a provision for more money depending on the district's revenue. teacher's began that strike may 20th and spent more than 200 hours in the bargaining table. teachers expected back in their

the 60s. and during the day tomorrow, from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., another heat advisory. the includes the population centers, bay area, san francisco, oakland, east bay, you saw the update occur inland for the heat advisory to extend up and down into the san joaquin valley as well where there's an excessive heat warning. this is from central california to northern california hot temperatures. we think temperatures tomorrow, san jose and the tri-valley temperatures coming close to 100 if not above that. low 90s again in the east valley. san francisco could once again get close to record territory with upper 80s, maybe close to 90 south of downtown and north bay temperatures in the 90s to near 100 degrees. here we jump to tuesday's forecast, another warm start to the morning but notice the
