creating the second largest u.s. and defense aerospace company. wow, finally a straight old white man gets a break! >> a big night for bryan cranston and the best of broadway as the tonys awards light up radio city music hall. early today starts right now. good morning. i'm marley hall. >> and i'm phillip mena. we begin with that breaking news. red sox legend david ortiz was shot in the dominican republic. the former red sox sluer was at the dial bar and lounge in the capital of santa domingo when some men apparently riding on a motorcycle ambushed him. police say the bullet pierced ortiz in the back and exited through his stomach. this morning he is in stable condition. police say one of his suspected assailants was captured by the crowd and is beaten up. the other escaped and is at large. tributes are pouring in. the red sox issued a statement offering all available resources

during his recovery. sports castor aaron andrews tweeted this sports illustrated cover writing boston is with you. and heisman trophy winner reggie bush is wishing him a speedy recovery. 1 person was killed and five others injured when a massive crane crashed into an apartment building and garage. this video shows the devastating aftermath inside the parking structure. a powerful storm was rolling through dallas at the time and a peak wind gust of 71 miles per hour was recorded less than 15 minutes before the crane collapsed. for more on this, we go to nbc's blaine alexander. >> oh my god the crane is falling over. oh my god. >> reporter: in dallas it's the fury of an unforgiving storm caught on camera, this crane collapsing into the side of an apartment building. officials say strong wind is likely to blame. >> that's my apartment, you know. it's done. >> reporter: tearing through homes and slietion through this

parking garage leaving cars in a cru crumpled mess. one person has been killed, six more rushed to the hospital, two with critical injuries. >> this is a really challenging situation in the sense that i cannot personally recall that we've had a crane collapse that didn't involve an already inhabited building. i don't recall ever responding to one where it's actually fallen on to an occupied building much less than occupied five-story residential high-rise building. >> reporter: many are left without homes. the latest destruction across the storm ever had ravaged south. blaine alexander, nbc news. out west strong winds and high temperatures are fueling wildfires. billowing smoke engulfed the rides at the six flags magic mountain just north of los angeles forcing the park to close early. evacuations have been ordered west of the sacramento. sand fire ignited there saturday afternoon and spread quickly. molly hunter has more on the efforts to contain the flames.

>> reporter: firefighters battling with this sand fire in northern california burning across 2,000 acres. it spread quickly through steep brush-covered hills. >> these erratic winds push the flame in a variety of directions which make it very difficult for to us figure out which direction that fire is going. >> but firefighters made progress. the blaze only growing by a hundred acres. >> i guess it's our turn. hopefully they'll put it out. >> they didn't have time to evacuate us. it was already coming through the property. >> reporter: winds gusting with temperatures hot and dry, millions under red flag warnings and mandatory evacuations are now in place. >> gets a little nerve racking but it at the same time we know those firefighters are working and without them i don't know what we'd do. >> reporter: and the towns hardest hit by the 2018 campfire, including paradise where people have just started to return home, pg&e protectively shut off power there and across northern california for nearly 18,000 customers. in southern california, the sky fire breaking out near magic mountain. families evacuating running to

their cars as smoke enguxd the park. in arizona in the tonto national forest north of phoenix, more than 7,000 acres burning, now 50% contained. the first heat wave is approaching, temperatures soaring from phoenix to las vegas and palm springs expected to hit 112 on tuesday. and with high dps, the fire risk in the west remains dangerous. molly hunter, nbc news, laurks. while president trump says it's case closed on the mueller report, democrats are just getting started. this week the house is ramping up investigations into possible obstruction of justice wit three days of hearings. the president blasted the probes in a sunday tweet storm saying in part the mueller report was a disaster for democrats. tracie potts joins us from d.c. with the latest. >> reporter: the house judiciary committee says the goal of today's hearing is to educate the public about what's in the 448 page mueller report. >> we're going to get to the

president trump. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. mexico will not face new tariffs today over immigration after days of high stakes negotiations. president trump announced an 11th-hour deal this weekend saying mexico has agreed take stronger measures to stem the flow of migrants at the border. the president also blasted a "new york times" report that suggested the trade tension didn't accomplish all that much. under the deal mexico will deploy 6,000 troops across its southern border to stop migrants from central america. but the country had already pledged 5,400 troops back in december. so what's new? an administration official says it's an expansion of mexico's commitments and if the country is unsuccessful in curbing illegal immigration, the president warned he may turn back to tariffs. st. louis blues have the worst record in the nhl on january 2nd, but now they have a chance to win their first stanley cup. to clepch it they would need a game six victory. you see thousand of fans

washington, d.c. but several people were hurt when false reports of a shooting sparked panic among attendees. police say they arrested a man for having a bb gun. officials confirming that three people were killed while traveling along highway 27 when they're vehicle slid off the road and overturned in a rising creek. the state reported over a foot of rain over the last few days. the flooding washed away dirt beds under some roads causing streets there to disappear. the same storm system brought high winds, and torrential rain across oklahoma city. areas that have already been hit hard this year were flooded yet again. the rainfall rates reached more than 1 inch per hour and the oklahoma city fire department says cruise responded to 74 calls in just three hours. let's bring in meteorologist bill karins who's tracking that weather. >> don't drive through flood roadways like that guy was

september 11th victims the 9/11 victim compensation fund is set to expire next year permanently, but there is a vote on the house floor next month. funds have already been cut in half after 5 billion of the $7.4 billion were spent. >> some disturbing news during lgbtq pride month. an 18-year-old michigan man has been arrestedin connection wit the slaying of three members of lgbtq community. devon robbins is facing three counts of murder along with assault and weapons charges. he fatally shot the three victims last month inside a home two of the alleged victims were transgender woman.her was a prosecutors say robinson targeted the victims because of their sexuality. >> a female brigadier general will make history, becoming the first woman to ever ever to lead an army infantry division. laurie jaeger will assume command of the 40th infantry division at ceremonies in california on june 29th.
