and a good monday morning to you. starting the day off hot. i'm marcus washington. >> you'll notice the red. we are in a microclimate weather alert. i know you're making plans. i want to help you with temperatures throughout the day. starting out this morning in the upper 60s. and already low 70s as we head toward the 10:00 hour. we're reaching into the mid-80s in the inland areas. san francisco will be heating up today. look at those numbers at noon. lunchtime going back inside. air-conditioning needed as temperatures reach into the upper 90s. 104 degrees as we see some of your tri-valleys, south bay, as well as the valleys in the north bay. some of us may be peaking at 105. i'll talk more about this and

what's ahead for the rest of the week. >> we still have traffic moving pretty well for the fastrak lanes. early start to the backup when we see traffic through contra costa and the maze. this could be bad timing for folks. we may not be able to recover. there is the backup at the bay bridge. all right. 5:02. back to the heat that is approaching the century mark. triple digits dangerous ingredient for wildfire. >> pete suratos live for us in concord where it is expected to

hit the triple digits. this is a great reminder for people to stay on alert because of the heat. >> reporter: yes, indeed. good morning to you, marcus. stay on alert. things will warm up across the bay area, especially here in concord. it will be heading to the triple digits. it will be hot as well as across the bay area. on social media, marin county fire department, you can see the burning brush. crews acted fast to contain it. san jose, fire investigators are thinking the gun range may have sparked the grass fire along malech road.

>> there's a number of things that may have caused the incident, that may have caused the fire. we'll be doing a thorough investigation. >> the chief said they got a break on this one. the winds are not as strong as the ridges. it is bone dry. >> all right. thank you, pete. the sand fire is still burning in yolo county. it's moving away from holmes now. crews say they are making progress. at last check it was only 20% contained and covering 2,200 acres. roughly 140 people living on county road 41 are still out of their homes as of this morning

they have mandatory evacuation orders there. the smoke from the sand fire is drifting into parts of the bay area. but the cause of the fire is unknown at this point. >> where we see the dots it indicates where it is a little bit more unhealthy to be outside, especially if you have asthma or any type of breathing problems. limit your time today. as we go through the rest of the day, drifts of smoke coming in, especially in the north bay. it gets trapped in the low valleys. and tri-valley, santa clara valley. it will be unhealthy to spend long periods of time outside. we have the high heat. we'll talk about the temperatures coming up in a few minutes. kari, thank you. 5:05. president trump is suspending plans to impose new tariffs on

mexican goods. those would have taken effect today. mexico has a new plan to crack down on migrants coming from central america. the house judiciary committee said the goal of this afternoon's hearing is to educate the public. justice department rules prevented him from indicting mr. trump some five dozen democrats or republicans say they are ready to impeach president trump now california will become the first state in the country to give full health benefits to some undocumented immigrants. it is part of governor newsom's budget proposal. it would apply to state residents between the ages of 19 and 25. they would be eligible for california medicaid as a larger effort to provide health insurance for everyone living in

the state. >> crews will be searching for a pilot after a small plane crashed into the delta near antioch. a boater saw the plane crash at 5:00 yesterday evening. it is believed to have taken off from buchanan field airport in concord and went down shortly after that. officials say the pilot was the only person on board. that person's name has not yet been released. >> turning back now to the hot weather. as kari has been telling us, it will hit triple digits in parts of the bay area today. a look at san bruno. looks can be deceiving. it is expected to hit the 90s there today. so it will be hot. people told us they made sure to lather up with spf and take frequent breaks in the shade. >> we are putting on sunscreen, wearing our sunglasses, our hat, doing everything we can to keep hydrated with water. so just doing what we can.

>> take a look at that. the fair will run another week. >> folks are just trying to enjoy some family time. >> you do what you can and still enjoy the day. just make sure you take it easy, you're paying attention. you feel tired. we do have a heat advisory in effect all across the bay area with temperatures from the bay to the coast reaching near 90 degrees. and the valleys up to 105. there will be some minor cooling as we head throughout that forecast. as you make your way out the door, we will see the temperatures rising quickly today. that will be the main story. high of 103 in morgan hill. 101 today in santa rosa.

the green. the dow is on a five-day winning streak, its longest stretch since january. . on the watch, reports on inflation, in port prices, production and consumer sentiment. american airlines is extending cancellations of boeing 737 max flights until september 3rd. american previously canceled them through august. boeing has yet to complete a certification test flight and submit a software upgrade. it will work closely with customers impacted by the cancellations. the prices at the pump continue to fall. it dropped to $2.84, 17 cents lower than a year ago. it is mostly due to lower oil prices hovering $54 a barrel. gas in the bay area close to $4 a gallon.

san francisco, up to 88 degrees. 105 in livermore, antioch and concord today. san jose, reaching 100 degrees. really hot weather today. this is the hottest weather of the week. high pressure off the coast. we're getting an offshore wind flow. as we go throughout the week, we get a little bit more of an ocean breeze heading into the middle of the week that week. that will allow for the coastal areas to cool off. as we head toward the weekend, high pressure starts to build once again as we go into saturday and sunday. our temperatures start to go up. it looks like next week is starting out really hot. so we are going to enjoy a bit of a break going into thursday through saturday. and once again it will heat up once again. plan accordingly, especially in the valleys where we reach over

you can watch it here on nbc bay area. 5:23 for you right now. a sea of people in hong kong protesting ahead of pivotal debates this week. >> organizers say more than a million people demonstrated against the planned extradition law. it would allow hong kong suspects to be sent to mainland china to face trial. it is believed to be the largest since china assumed control back in 199 7. assessing the damage left behind after a crane collapsed on an apartment building in dallas. it caused the crane to topple onto the build and a nearby parking deck. the damage inside the building. you can see cars completely smashed. residents have been evacuated to nearby shelters and are being offered assistance.

temperatures reach the century mark today. a hot one out there for you. the and good morning to you. as we begin this monday morning. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia. check out the sunrise, the city by the bay. >> beautiful. >> it makes for a beautiful sunrise. it makes for a difficult day weather-wise. >> not only is it unhealthy to breathe the smoke, but to spend time outside because of the heat. a heat advisory going up at 10:00 this morning for pretty much all the inland parts of the bay area. that includes san francisco as well. and parts of the peninsula away from the coastline. it is going to be hot. a live look at walnut creek. as you step out the door, we will reach the mid-90s already by noon. we're heading up to 105 degrees today. it will be dangerous to be out there. the weekend coming up.

mike, traffic stacking up out of oakland. >> that's pretty typical. today we were concerned because of an early disabled vehicle on the span. we had just about recovered and then this kicked in. fastrak lanes are moving. that's good. that's kind of what we expect to see as we slide toward the summertime commute pattern. slowing for contra costa county. marin, south 101, we got word that all lanes from the deadly crash. south 101. breaking news out of the south bay. a chase leading to a deadly crash in san jose. >> "today in the bay" ali wolf just got on scene. ali, we hear you just found new information out. >> reporter: yeah, kris and marcus. we just found out that the driver of a minute have van that is still out here on scene,

very, very damaged from that crash. that driver died, along with a passenger, who is in critical condition here. so one death in the mini van. one passenger in critical condition. the suspect's vehicle is blocking the on-ramp right now with the hazard lights on. that is the on-ramp to 101. there are car parts on the freeway entrance. chp just told us the driver had a passenger in the car and admitted to being under the influence of methamphetamine and was taken to the hospital as well and will be facing charges. so we have some video of the scene. we know that chp and san jose police are out here investigating at this point. this is still a very active scene. the entrance to the 101 is going to be closed as this investigation continues and also the westbound lanes of orabout buena closed as well. we know the driver admitted to using methamphetamine and had a

felony warrant out for his or her arrest. so the investigation is on going. afly wo ali wolf for "today in the bay". thank you very much, ali. the bay area fire danger is far from over with. another hot day ahead. fire crews were kept extremely busy over the weekend. here's a map showing where brush fires broke out. hundreds of acres keeping firefighters working around the clock in the heat as fire season comes under way. the malech fire started yesterday afternoon near morgan hill. crews had it 70% contained. firefighters are still working to put out the flames. the extreme heat will be on top of everyone's minds today, along with the fire danger. we'll see temperatures in the 100s, pete. >> reporter: wow, yeah. in the 100s. good morning to you, marcus. you have utility companies like pg&e taking precaution aware steps by shutting off power to some areas. they don't have any planned shutoffs today, but who knows if that could change. it did so over the weekend. due to the red flag warnings. we always hear about that this time of the year. it affected 1,700 customers near lake berryessa. the potential for wildfires for customers who live in these areas. >> we understand the need to turn it off to prevent further fires, especially with the wind

afternoon outside davis and roughly 140 people in the county were still out of their homes this morning following mandatory evacuation orders. some folks did returning to the area to check on things. they are reassured by what they say. >> i saw it started yesterday at 2:30. i knew it would be bad. they evacuated us. this is much better. yesterday was really bad. >> smoke from the sand fire is drifting over parts of the bay area. >> kari hall posting on facebook and twitter. take a look there. follow kari on facebook, twitter and instagram for the on-the-go updates. a mystery deep else in the anyone can republic. a fourth american tourist is dead after vacationing at an island resort. he is originally from the bay area.

robert wallace lived in the central valley and was born in redwood city. he was celebrating a family wedding in april when he died unexpectedly. his family told fox news that the 67-year-old got sick immediately after having a drink from the hotel mini bar at the hard rock hotel. a celebration of life will be held june 29th. wallace is the fourth american who has died in the dominican republic in the last two months. may 25, miranda warner died at the grand bahia principe. and then the days from maryland were found unresponsive in their room. baseball star david ortiz is said to be in stable condition and out of danger this morning after being ambushed by a gunman in his home country, the dominican republic. we are about to show you new

video from overnight showing the moment ortiz was shot. take a look here. this is video from a club in the anyone can republic where the gunman shot the former red sox star last night. the suspect got off a motorcycle. and you can see him walk over and shoot him point-blank from behind. the bullet passed through ortiz but did not hit a vital organ. bystanders caught up with the suspect and beat him severely. he is also in the hospital. 5:38. palo alto leaders will debate creating a specific area for overnight rv parking and restricting that kind of parking everywhere else. council members are looking at an area where a water treatment plant once sat on san antonio road. one man gave us an inside look at his home. he works as a technician and driver for uber and lyft. he said it is too expensive to

because of the heat advisory in effect. a live look at palo alto. we're starting out with upper 60s and then going into the low 90s already by noon. we'll see how high those temperatures go and a bit of a cooloff in the forecast in less than five minutes. san mateo bridge. traffic looks good. taillights in the peninsula. right now the volume right here is just great. well, with just four days until the end of the school year, teachers in union city and hayward are finally expected to return today. they announced the agreement reached friday was ratified. 60% of union members voted to take the deal. this includes two bonuses totally 40%. and a provision for more money depending on the district's revenue. they say even though it does not meet initial demands, it will do for now. >> it is the best situation now

that we have. obviously more is better. we all understand that. based on the conversation this year to this point is really a good place for us to be and continuing forward. >> this was a long strike especially for students who were trying to wrap up the school year. the strike began may 20th. and the final day of school is thursday. >> and we're learning new details about a strike planned across the state. thousands of mental health workers. we know kaiser permanente employees will not hit the picket lines today. the union says they are making progress at the bargaining table. there's still a possibility of a future strike. new details now and new outrage after the death of another horse at a santa anita racetrack. one recent death was because of a heart attack. that horse was euthanized after collapsing near the finish line. in this case the track surface was not a factor.

since december, 29 horses have died. the california horse racing board has recommended that the track suspend racing for the rest of the season, which ends june 23rd. however, santa anita has chosen to continue racing there because of the fact that the board gave the track 10 days's notice, it can suspend racing for the final three days. senator dianne feinstein called for an investigation into what's happening at that track. several people have taken to twitter expressing outrage about their decision to remain open. many saying shut it down. >> in san diego, police are investigating the death of a woman struck and killed by two police patrol cars saturday night. the officers were responding to a burglary in progress when she was hit while crossing the street. neighbors living in the area say many people don't use the crosswalks. crews are cleaning up streets in

we have these drifts of smoke coming in due to the wildfires. watch out for that. breathing problems, it will be healthy to be inside in the east bay and santa clara valley. spare the air in effect. already looking warm. we have beautiful sunrises. we have more smoke in the air. as it comes up, we will have to deal with hot temperatures. let me get you out the door in antioch. it will already be in the upper '60s. the temperatures going up fast. 9:00, we're at 80 degrees. noon, it is 93 degrees. 105 in antioch. oakland, 9 2. and 88 today in san francisco. really hot because of this large area of high pressure that's actually giving us an off-shore wind flow. as we go throughout the next couple of days, that weakens.

we get our ocean breeze back for the middle of the week and into the weekend. by sunday into monday, it will be high pressure building. our temperatures starting up and then going down. we go from the triple digits to the mid-80s by the weekend. it will feel so much better. a break from the heat before it possibly gets really hot once again. san francisco, big cooldown there. going from 88 today to 76 tomorrow. i'll be tracking that heat for you. mike, there is a new delay for mass transit. >> yeah, kari. the bart system has a minor delay. about 10 minutes. maybe a little bit less. over here, 10-minute delay between west oakland and san francisco. i just realized i have one complete work. between west oakland and san francisco.
