"today in the bay" continues right now. and a good monday morning to you. setting you up for a nice warm -- i should say hot day. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia. we have some tieups on the roadways so far. it is dangerous heat. i have a friend who is a teacher. she is taking her kids to great america today. it is supposed to be so hot. >> the waters will be good. if you're at great america, you'll stay in the water park. anything to stay cool in this heat. if you're going to be outside, sunscreen, lots of water. we just want you to take it easy. we have a heat advisory in effect that starts at 10:00 this morning, continues through 9:00 p.m. all the areas shaded in orange, which includes the south bay, into the tri-valley, as well as the delta, into the north bay valleys. even san francisco today included in that heat advisory which we don't see very often.

so i'll have a look at the timeline of the temperatures and also the slight cooling for the middle of the week now. mike, you were pointing out something at the bay bridge. . >> the fastrak lanes are moving better than they were during the 5:00 hour. i know that was only a couple of minutes technically. 10 or 15 minutes ago things were more still. that is good news at the bay bridge. that mns we're holding steady at the baze and the toll plaza. no real issues along the side of the bay. slowing building up in the north 101, san mateo. now we saw a crash icon pop up. i will check that and see what's going on. hills detail, possibly towards 3rd. southbound 880, this is a crash at stevenson boulevard partially blocking one lane. causing a little slowing through fremont. back to you. >> thanks, mike. breaking news some the south bay where a chase led to a deadly crash in south san jose.

this is a look at the scene. you can just see the violence with which that collision happened at yorba buena at the 101 overpass. ali wolf said the driver of the car was being chased up to 120 miles per hour when he crashed into a mini van. the driver of the mini van died at the scene. one passenger is critically injured. chp tells us that the suspect was wanted on a felony warrant. they also tell us that the man admitted to them to being high on meth. "today in the bay" ali wolf will have a live report coming up. 6:02. another hot day on tap. there are more concerns about the dangerous. >> dangerous heat. we're going to see temperatures in the 100s, pete. you will have to shed the jacket.

yeah. that's right, kris and marcus. good morning to you. you can feel it. it is going to warm up soon. it's not too cold. i will have to drop the coat soon enough. the heat may have contributed to some of the fires we saw over the weekend that our viewers heard about. this is from the north bay. this is posted on social media. you can see the burning brush around the power pole. they were able to contain it to less than an acre. in san jose, looking to whether shots fired at a gun range may have sparked off highway 101. a firefighter began battling from the air and it spread 200 acres. >> it started in a range area. the area was active with shooters at the time.

however, there's a number of things that may have caused the incident to -- that may have caused the fire. so we'll be doing a thorough investigation. >> reporter: this this is a preview of what to expect all season long. we'll have more in the next half hour. pete suratos for "today in the bay". >> thank you very much, pete. the sand fire is still burning in yolo county. firefighters tell us they are making progress. as of last night, it is 20% contained, having burned 2,200 acres. it started saturday afternoon outside davis. roughly 140 people living on a county road there are following mandatory evacuation orders. smoke is drifting as well.

right now we don't know what caused that fire. we do want to bring in kari hall. smoke is moving into the bay area. it is powerful enough that you might want to stayinside. . >> yeah. not only that but because of the excessive heat we'll have today. i wanted to show you the air quality. it is a spare the air alert day. the dots show current air quality. yellow is moderate. most of it is good. as we start out this morning, we will see the drifts of smoke coming in, especially in the north bay. it will be unhealth y. it can get trapped in low-lying areas and the valleys. inland east bay, santa clara valley, unhealthy health quality. we'll talk about the heat. that's coming up in three minutes. thank you, kari. crews will be searching for a pilot after a small plane crashed into the delta near antioch. a boater says they saw the plane crash 5:00 in the evening yesterday. the plane is believed to have

taken off from buchanan field in concord and crashed shortly after. the pilot was the only person on board, and that pilot's name has not been released california will be the first state in the country to give full health benefits to undocumented immigrants. it is part of the new budget proposal and is being debated by the legislature. they will be eligible for california medicaid to provide health insurance for everyone living in the state. >> on capitol hill, democrats are holding their first hearing today on the mueller report this afternoon. president was not charged. republicans say it's a big show and that this is not the appropriate way to follow-up with this mueller report. the house judiciary committee says the goal of today's hearing is to educate the public about what's in the 448-page mueller report. >> we're going to get to the truth and we're going to demonstrate that 24 president must be accountable for his own conduct. >> reporter: five dozen democrats and one republican are ready to impeach president trump now. >> impeachment does not equal president trump leaving office. >> reporter: special counsel robert mueller found he said the president obstructed his investigation into russian election interference. the justice department rules prevented him from indicting mr. trump. one republican admits he never even read the report. >> i have a concern when you put the entire power of the united states justice department behind anything. you can achieve an agenda. >> reporter: today's star

so far no injuries or deaths reported. that is dramatic. >> it is. kari, in the bay area, we are dealing with smoke from the fires spreading around the bay area. >> yeah. we will have drift of smoke today. the tri-valley will get the worst today. as we take a live look outside in dublin, as we start out with a clear and hazy sunrise. let's go throughout the day. we're reaching into the mid-80s in the south bay as well as the east bay. look at santa rosa. at 10:00, already 83 degrees. it's even hotter. from there, you will want to keep the lunch inside. we'll be in the mid to upper 90s, reaching 105 in antioch today. livermore, up to 105 as well. morgan hill, over 100. check out san francisco reaching 88. so we'll talk about the slight cooldown for mid week. mike, you have a bigger delay

weather alert due to the heat advisory in effect. at 6:13, a live look outside in san jose. a few clouds drifting by. evergreen will be about 70 degrees at 7:00. and we should normally reach 78. we will be close to our record high today already by early afternoon. so we will talk about that and what's ahead coming up in less than five minutes. parking lot riders, we're recovering from the early delay. they fixed whatever equipment there was. we'll be in recovery mode there. traffic moving smoothly. i'll show you the issues on the peninsula and the east bay coming up. good morning. i'm rahel solomon at cnbc head quart ertz.

here are today's top business headlines. the markets are coming off the best week of the year. the dow showed a five-day winning streak, the longest stretch since january. reports on inflation, import prices, retail sales, production and consumer sentiment. american airlines extended cancellations of boeing 737 max flights through september 3rd, which works out to 115 flights per day. american had previously canceled flights through mid-august. boeing has yet to complete a certification test flight. and also submit a software upgrade and new training procedures for approval. american says it will work closely with customers impacted by the cancellations. prices at the pump continue to fall. the average price dropping 90s cents to $2.84 a gallon. 17 cents lower than it was a year ago. analysts say the decline is due to lower oil prices which right now are hovering $54 a barrel. back in your area, gas is much higher, averaging close to $4 a gallon. >> yeah. went to the pump yesterday and

us a lot of hues in the sky. as we check out concord and our temperature trend, upper 60s already starting out this morning. and normally we start out the day at 55 degrees. but it is going to be very hot. and the temperatures going up fast. at 1:00, we're up to 98 degrees. and we know it doesn't stop there. we're eventually going to reach 105. napa reaching 100 degrees there. palo alto, very hot included in that heat advisory. up to 98. coastal areas will be heating up today. high pressure sits just off the coast. today will be the peak of the heat. as that moves off to the east, we get our ocean breeze back. by weekend, we see high pressure building once again. so we will see a nice start to the weekend. by sunday, early next week, it's going to get hot once again.

let's check out the seven-day forecast. look at that. 103 degrees. dangerous temperatures. make sure you're drinking lots of water even if you don't feel thirsty. cooling off into the mid-80s, which is still above normal. 84 friday. 85 saturday. san francisco will see much more of a break into the weekend. reaching in the upper 60s. mike, do you have any more good news? >> i do, kari. i gave it to you just after the commercial. bart system is in recovery mode. so the mechanical issues, the equipment problems out of the west oakland station cleared up. there may be some trains with as much as 20-minute delays. that's the max. everything is improving. they are smoothing smooth through with the hub. this is north 101, north of 680. traffic really building up.

more than a million people demonstrating against the planned extradition law. it would allow hong kong suspects to be sent to mainland china to face trial. it is believed to be the largest since china assumed control back in 1997. new this morning, crews will assess the damage left behind after a crane collapsed on an apartment building in dallas. it caused the crane to topple onto the build and a nearby parking deck. sadly, one person died, six others hurt. new video showing the damage inside the building. you can see cars completely smashed. residents have been evacuated to nearby shelters and are being offered assistance. structural engineers will also be on site to determine how to remove the crane. and 6:25 for you right now. and with broadway taking center stage, a musical some called the

hot one. we are in a microclimate weather alert. it could surpass 100 degrees in the north bay and east bay. meanwhile, the sunrise from san bruno mountain camera. it is looking gorgeous. that's because there is a little bit of smoke in the sky from the wildfires. what that means for us and when we can expect the heat to break. thanks so much. i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia. kari hall keeping us up to date on the temperatures. just a hot and dangerous one. >> the heat advisories are in effect for today. this is the we start this morning. beautiful sunrise with some clouds filtering the sun. throughout the rest of the day, willow glen will start out at 70 degrees. that's closer to our average high temperature. we go well above that with some mid-90s by early afternoon. and once again, the heat

advisory in effect. that starts at 10:00 this morning and continues through 9:00 this evening. we'll talk more about when the temperatures start to back off. mike, you have a big delay and that may be on the tracks. . >> the issue is it's bart. there was a problem at west oakland. the good news i said was a problem. it has been in recovery mode. the problem has been cleared. you may have some trains with as much as 20-minute delays. likely less than that. these folks may be headed to a delay as well. slowly to the peninsula. north 101 is still recovering. jammed from hills detail all the way up toward the peninsula. the crash is over to the shoulder. the other crash, south 880 on the shoulder. that's it for the bay. back to you. thanks, mike. 6:31 right now. we are following breaking news out of the south bay. a chase leading to a deadly crash. >> police tell us the suspect

admitted to them being high on drugs. "today in the bay" ali wolf has been on the scene. ali, what can you tell us? >> reporter: well, kris and marcus, chp says that police chase came to an end here at the off-ramp to 101 and yorba buena road. the bmw slammed into a mini van passing through this intersection at the time. two men were inside. one died here at the scene. and the other is in critical condition. chp says it all started at 3:15 at 280 when officers spotted the suspect driving erratically speeding and slowing down. they say that suspect drove onto southbound 101. officers tried to pull him over. there was a quick chase. he sped off. then he came to the off-ramp of 101, blew through a red light at this intersection where that crash happened. now, we want to take you back out here live.

the on-ramp to 101. that is the suspect's bmw with the hazard lights on. the car parts. the on-ramp is closed. chp says when they tried to catch up with the suspect, he got up and started to run. they say he also told officers he was under the influence of me methamphetamine. he had a female pattern with him. the suspect will be facing charges. and meantime the on-ramp is closed and westbound yorba buena road. ali wolf for "today in the bay". very sad way to start the morning. thank you very much, ali. well, this morning the bay area fire danger far from over. fire crews were kept extremely busy over the weekend. this is where brush fires broke out. hundreds of acres keeping the firefighters around the clock in the heat. this comes as fire seasons gets

under way. >> still burning in south san jose is the malech fire. just got an update moments ago. crews tell us it is now 85% contained. . >> the extreme heat will be on top of everyone's mind. one of the many places in contra costa county where the temperatures will hit 100 degrees. how is it feeling out there now, pete? >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus and kris. it will be a hot day as the sun is starting to peek through the city of concord. we know pg&e are taking precaution. pg&e caught off power for about a thousand customers.

same thing they did in napa. 1700 customers near lake berryessa. >> we understand the need to turn it off to prevent further fires especially with the wind that we have been having. >> we try to make sure we fill up the gas cans for the generator, that we have food, that we can eat without power. we have a microwave, a stove.

this morning we are learning a fourth american tourist is dead after vacationing at an island resort in the anyone can republic. he was originally here from the bay area. robert wallace lived in the central valley and was born in redwood city. he was celebrating a family wedding in april when he died unexpectedly. his family told fox news that the 67-year-old got sick immediately after having a drink from the hotel mini bar at the hard rock hotel. in punta cana. a celebration of life will be held june 29th. wallace is the fourth american who has died in the dominican republic in the last two months. may 25, miranda warner died at the grand bahia principe. family was told she died of respiratory failure. five days later, holmes and day

were found unresponsive in their room. a big story out of the anyone can republic. we are showing you video that may be disturbing. baseball star david ortiz is said to be in stable condition and out of danger this morning after being ambushed by a gunman in his home country, the dominican republic. security video from the club shows the gunman shooting the former red sox star. you can see him walking over and shot him point-blank from behind. the bullet passed through ortiz but did not hit a vital organ. bystanders caught up with the suspect and beat him severely. he is also in the hospital. 6:37 now. later this morning, the judge in the ghost ship warehouse fire trial is expected to make a key ruling on potential testimony. the defense wants jurors to hear from a witness who claims she overheard men claiming she started the fire in oakland. defense attorneys plan to start presenting their case today.

derrick almena and max harris each face 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter, one for each person who died in the fire. happening tonight, creating a specific area for overnight rv parking and restricting it everywhere else. council members are looking at an area where a water treatment plant once sat on san antonio road. one man gave us an inside look at his home. he works as a technician and driver for uber and lyft. he said it is too expensive to rent an apartment. now he worries about the consequences of parking where he lives. >> i'm trying to improve myself and keep this clean, and it's just one way i can stay at this moment of my life. and i have parking tickets for $68.

different times. they are pretty similar. whether or not you jog over toward 280 or take a wiggle through san mateo. if you join the team on the beam, nbc bay area wazers, we will keep in communication with you. try to get the best route. drive like a local wherever you are. >> you have your eyes on all the roads. but you have your eyes on the one road. you'll probably crank the air-conditioning. >> really hot to start out this week. the good news is as we head towards the weekend, temperatures come down some. for the inland valleys, we'll go from 103 degrees to 85. that's an improvement. and san francisco will have much cooler weather. we're going to keep the ocean breeze and see the fog returning. we'll be in the mid to upper 60s going into the weekend. if you're planning to go to the sierra, a live look at heavenly. the only thing we'll have to watch out for is rain and thunderstorms for the weekend.

a live look outside at walnut creek. our temperatures start out at about 70 degrees. quickly jump into the tphaoeubts, reaching over 100 degrees today. a slight cooldown and smoke drifting in in less than five minutes. >> san mateo bridge took my focus. on the right is your build. bart on a 10-minute delay. with just four days until the end of the school year, teachers in union city and hayward are returning to the classroom today. last night the teachers union announcing the agreement reached friday was ratified. 60ers of union members voted to take the deal. it includes two bonuses totaling 44% and provisions for more money depending on the district's revenue.

union leaders say even though it does not meet initial demands, it will do now. >> it is the best situation now that we have. obviously more is better. we all understand that. based on the conversation this year to this point is really a good place for us to be and continuing forward. >> this was a long strike especially for students who were trying to wrap up the school year. the strike began may 20th. and the final day of school is thursday. >> and we're learning new details about a strike planned across the state. by thousand says of mental health workers. we know kaiser permanente employees will not hit the picket lines today. the union says they are making progress at the bargaining table. there's still a possibility of a future strike. new details now and new outrage after the death of two more horses at santa anita racetrack.

one recent death was because of a heart attack. that horse was euthanized after collapsing near the finish line. in this case the track surface was not a factor. since december, 29 horses have died. the california horse racing board has recommended that the track suspend racing for the rest of the season, which ends june 23rd. however, santa anita has chosen to continue racing there because of the fact that the board gave the track 10 days's notice, it has the authority to suspend racing for the final three days of the season. in april, senator dianne feinstein called for an investigation into what's happening there at the track. several people have taken to twitter expressing outrage about their decision to remain open. many saying shut it down. ava lay homan is accused of driving drunk in connection to a crash that happened early yesterday morning in brentwood. a nissan sentra struck a utility pole east of adams lane. a 23-year-old woman, a passenger in the car, died at the scene.

spots but it will be very hot start to the week. we will be near record highs. napa reaching 100 degrees. even hot in san francisco. also included in that heat advisory as we reach 88 degrees. the reason why it is so hot, we have a wind flow that is blowing offshore. now we know the water temperatures are cool. gives us a cool breeze. as the high pressure starts to slide to the east, we'll get an ocean breeze by the middle of the week. that will at least allow for the beaches and the coast to cool off quite a bit with 80s inland. going into the weekend, though, we will still be on our break from the high heat. high pressure will be building once again. by sunday, into tomorrow, it will be turning hot. we still see temperatures starting up, coming down, and then starting to go back up.

yolo county. it is moving away from homes. it is covering 2,200 acres and 20% contained. 41 people still out of their homes following mandatory evacuations. smoke from the sand fire is drifting into the bay area. the cause remains unclear. developing this morning, crews will be searching for a solo flyer whose small plane crashed near antioch. a boater saw it go down 5:00 last night. authorities believe it took off from pwabuchanan. big business for a redwood city burger king. they are offering the impossible whopper. it isn't actually meat.
