first we will get to the commute. we have to talk about the weather today. another day of 100-degree temperatures in parts. >> really hot. i saw laura's post on instagram. she's in lake tahoe. still snow there. hard to believe while we are baking in the heat. a live look at san jose. starts out with a clear start. it's already in the upper 60s. let's check out sunnyvale. i need to move that down. 71 degrees. mid-90s today. it is going off the screen there. unbelievably hot today. as we go through the timeline, it will be heating up by lunchtime. we're already in the 90s. mike, you are tracking the roads. a couple of issues especially for the bridges. >> effort that. kari, my gosh, the temperatures off the chart, literally. over here we have a new issue

just across the san mateo. i will check on that for the bay shore freeway. the same two bridges. i'm hoping the speed sensors are indicating some improvement. chp has not updated the status yet. toward 92. jams up heading through union city, alvarado. it goes from red, orange, yellow. alvarado, the scene of the crash. it just went to green. this will stick around. the backup at the bay bridge. back to you. breaking news overnight, two small earthquakes that you might have felt on opposite ends of the bay area. one, a 3.5, rattled an area 20 miles south of gilroy. that happened around midnight or so. the other quake struck about the same time near the geysers. you might know that shaking is

commonly man made and not from any active quake fault. today iowa is getting a preview of the presidential showdown. both donald trump and joe biden will descend on the swing state. "today in the bay" tracie potts live in washington with more on the competitive campaigns. tracie? >> reporter: very competitive, marcus. so let's start with president trump. he descends on iowa. he will be in council bluffs today talking about renewable energy delivering on a promise about ethanol. the president has now visited iowa behind more than a dozen democrats over the weekend. he's also doing a republican fund-raiser while he's there. and for now his chief democratic rival, joe biden, is going to be spending two days in iowa starting today. he's expected to give a major speech that criticizes the president on everything from health care to china trade

policy and how that's hurt the farmers in iowa and across the middle of the country. he is now leading the poll of democrats. he was not there when 19 democrats showed up for an event there, including senator kamala harris. she has spent several days in iowa trying to drum up support in that state. of course she is from california. but she spoke sunday in cedar rapids at the democratic party's hall of fame event. and eric swalwell from the east bay, who is from iowa originally. he's a native. it doesn't seem to be helping him in the polls. one of several democrats who pulled in zero in iowa. i can tell you from, twoing in iowa, covering the caucuses there, interesting animal the way they work. the polling numbers now don't necessarily translate at all to what with we might see by the time the people of iowa vote.

today. parts of the bay area catch a break. san francisco is not as hot. you are not included in the heat advisory today. minor coastal cooling. the tri-valley is hot. dublin under an excessive heat warning today. yeah. it is going to be pretty bad. we start out hazy. this is a look at the area outlined in the excessive heat warning. anywhere in pink. that includes solano county, lake county, and then over toward the delta. also the tri-valley. as we go into today, back in the triple digits today, watching out for that. once again, the heat advisory for the rest of the bay area, except for the immediate coastline. here's the way we start in san jose. as you head out out to diridon, 71 degrees. already a mild start. at 10:00 we're at 86 degrees. then reaching into the mid-90s today. as we check out our high teurs

in the south bay reaching 9 6 in downtown san jose. gilroy 107. 102 in pittsburg. hey yard, 92. 88, san mateo. half moon bay 76. it feels better but warm in san francisco. upper 90s to 102 degrees in the north bay. the problem is we have this high pressure giving us an offshore wind flow. that moving off to the east tomorrow will give us an ocean breeze for the immediate coastline. that's going to bring the -- some areas down into the 70s and 80s. still hot inland. high pressure starts to build once again. it seems like it will be hot next week as it continues to intensify. temperatures from 100 degrees today t 90 tomorrow. 86 degrees on thursday. and friday 84.

the best day in the forecast as san francisco has big cooling going toward the end of the week. we'll be back into the 60s. you have a traffic alert >> that's right. it's not the east bay. crash out of union city looks like it has cleared. speed sensors are improving. chp cleared at the scene. south 101, traffic alert issued because three left lanes are block blocked. there's a lot of slowing heading southbound out of redwood city and woodside road. between whipple and woodside on the peninsula actually. look at that jam. choose 280 because it is clear. the short section, past the crash, things move nicely. 880 through fremont. we see this right around tesla.

degrees and everywhere across the bay area we set new records except for san jose and livermore. it was just extremely hot. today in dublin we have an excessive heat warning in effect. here's a look at our temperature trend that starts out at 70 degrees as you make your way out the door, reaching into the upper 90s by 1:00 today. we're going to see the highs over 100 degrees there again today. as we head over to mike, now you have a traffic alert. . >> yeah. it continues on the peninsula. the east bay we had a crash causing backups. it's been recovering through hayward and union city. that's the nimitz. on the peninsula, it looks like a short stretch. if you're in it, it feels like a long session of slowing redwood city to woodside road. there is a crash blocking your three left lanes. no major injuries reported in the initial report. it is causing a slowdown and distraction for the north bound side.

two small earthquakes felt on opposite ends of the bay kwraeufrplt the first 3.5 that rattled an area 20 miles south of gilroy a little before midnight. the other on the opposite end near the geysers. it was a 4.1 magnitude quake. of course in that area, the shaking is often man made and not because of any active quake fault. but we like you to know the small ones so you can count on us for the big ones. now to a follow-up. one college student is talking about how he used a popular new snapchat filter to help police bust a san mateo police officer. ethan, we are only using his first name, is talking exclusively with nbc bay area. he said he pretended to be an underaged girl online by using the gender switch feature for snapch snapchat. he sent messages back and forth on several social media apps claiming he was a 16-year-old girl. investigators say the man on the other end was a san mateo police

good tuesday morning. we're coming up on 6:42. walnut creek getting ready for an excessive heat warning today as we get another day of some dangerous temperatures. going from the low 70s to the upper 90s at 1:00. we'll talk about how high we go and some relief in the forecast coming up in less than five minutes. and we have this traffic alert for the peninsula. the crash at the center divide blocking left three lanes for the southbound direction. because it is close to the northbound side, it is causing a tkrabgz. i'll bring you alternates and the latest from chp. new this morning, eastern contra costa county, one person is in the hospital after a high-speed chase. this happened a little before 11:00 last night in oakley near

empire and hemlock. this is video showing the mangled car that struck that pole. responders had to use the jaws of life to get one driver out who was then airlifted to the hospital. a second person had minor injuries. according to the oakley police department, witnesses saw a car racing along the streets before the crash happened. while the video shows a beer bottle inside the car, police have not said if the driver was impaired. developing in southern california, a los angeles county deputy is fighting for his life after being shot in the head. he was out of uniform and not on duty. he was captured on surveillance video but still at large. the deputy is in critical condition. detectives are trying to find out whether he was targeted specifically. well, warriors in dub nation fearing the worst right now. they are waiting to see what an

north bay, up to 97 in santa rosa. napa reaching 100 degrees. we still have this offshore wind flow. slight cooling tomorrow at least for the coastal areas due to a stronger ocean breeze once the high pressure moves off to the east. going into the middle of the week, we still have some nice and refreshing breezes kicking in. but then by the end of the weekend, high pressure starts to build once again. that gives us a northerly wind and no more ocean breeze. so our temperatures are going to be heating up. we go from 100 inland to 90 on wednesday. 86 on thursday. it heats up sunday into next week. fog returns to the coastline.

the fire started. in eye few hours, san francisco supervisors will take a second vote on a proposal to close juvenile hall. the board initially approved plans to start the process of attempting to shut down the facility by the end of 2021. the second vote does not mean that it is a done deal. if approved, they will figure out what to do with the juveniles that are there now. the city and department of juvenile corrections have to approve that before any real steps can be taken to close the facility. >> also, new details in the college admissions cheating scandal. stanford university says it is working with the attorney general's office to find a worthy cause to donate what it calls tainted money collected as part of the scheme. approximately $770,000 was donated to the school's saling team, including $610,000 of prescribes to the coach. stanford is trying to find a way to redirect the funds to benefit what they call the public good.
