today friday, june 14, 2019. >> announcer: from nbc news this is "today" with savannah guthrie and hoda kotb live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. hi, everybody, good morning. nice to have you with us on a friday morning. did you hear my dad pun? that was for dads. >> i enjoyed that. thank you so much. coming up later, we head to brooklyn, me and al and carson, have some beers, sit around and talk about being dads. a lot of fun. let's get to our top story. overnight developments in the attacks on oil tankers in the middle east. we are now seeing video just released by the pentagon, the military saying this shows iran was involved. tensions are reaching new levels between the u.s. and iran. we have complete coverage. we start with nbc's chief foreign correspondent richard engel in the region. richard, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah.
7:03 am
we have seen dangerous escalations when one of the most volatile places on earth. now it seems the administration is trying to prove its case against iran. first publicly blaming iran for the attacks and then the military releasing this extraordinary video which could be the most damning evidence yet. the u.s. military released this surveillance footage which american officials tell nbc news shows iranian sailors removing an unexploded mine from the side of one of the tankers after it was attacked. the images taken by air seem to show the iranians recovering some sort of device and then leaving. it could be proof that iran was trying to hide its tracks. the japanese owner of one of the tankers said his crew spotted an iranian naval vessel in the area just before the attacks began, although he said the kind of weapons used remains unclear. the crew is saying the tanker was hit by a flying object, the
7:04 am
owner said. president trump blaming iran. >> you know they did it because you saw the boat. i guess wochblt mines didn't explode. it was them that did it. >> reporter: the attacks were so serious, the crews had to abandon ship. about half were taken aboard the "uss bainbridge ". the others were taken to iran. iran denies any involvement in the attacks. the iranian foreign minister in a tweet this morning suggesting iran's enemies, including saudi arabia, the uae, and israel, are trying to frame iran. it's the same line iran took after four tankers were attacked not far away last month. apparently by magnetically attached mines. u.s. officials said iran was almost certainly responsible for those attacks, too. the question remaining, of course, is why? why would iran attack unarmed ships in the persian gulf?
7:05 am
the trump administration has dramatically increased sanctions on iran to the point that iran's economy is truly suffering and oil analysts we have spoken to say the sanctions may have been too harsh, backing iran into a corner so iran may be lashing out. but iran, of course, says it had nothing to do with the attacks. >> thank you. let's turn to nbc news national security analyst jeremy bash. good morning to you. explain to our viewers why this is such a big deal. they may think oil tankers, they are not, you know, owned by the u.s. these aren't american flag ships. why do we care? why is this a big deal? >> this is a combustible mix. we have commercial vessels in a narrow area where american ships operate and our own navy operates. this is in fact a second front war that iran has opened against their gulf adversaries. they are fighting a land war in yemen.
7:06 am
this is an effort at naval terrorism. to choke off the commercial lifeline between the gulf arab countries and the rest of the world. it's dangerous because if any of the mine attacks are aimed at american ships, we could see the situation totally escalate and we could be at war. >> jeremy, the evidence here, the video that centcom put out, the images as well, open and shut case here, or do you want to see more? >> i think it's pretty compelling. i have never seen video like that of a state sponsor of naval terrorism covering up its attack. but, look, craig, i think in some ways this administration doesn't have strong credibility in the region in eyes of the world and they would do well to lay bare all of the evidence they have that iran was behind this attack as well as other attacks in the gulf. >> first of all, why would the iranians, or whomever is in the boats, be so obvious about it, jeremy?
7:07 am
second, how if in any way do you think the u.s. should respond? >> they are not as good as they think they are, savannah. they probably didn't realize we had a camera trained on that ship. second is, how should we respond? we should send a forceful message if iran attacks other commercial investigation there will be consequences. there should be a u.n. security council session and the entire world needs to condemn this activity immediately. >> jeremy, thank you very much. also this morning, the president is searching for his next white house press secretary after the surprise announcement that sarah huckabee sanders will be stepping down at the end of the month. nbc's peter alexander has more on that. peter, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. president trump today celebrating his 73rd birthday while at the same time saying good-bye to sarah sanders. she is moving back to arkansas. the president is urging her to run for governor there that she isn't ruling out. here as press secretary, sanders oversaw a disappearing tradition.
7:08 am
the daily white house press briefing, the last one held more than 90 days ago. sarah sanders, one of the most high-profile figures in the white house, stepping away from the mic. >> i'll try not to get emotional because i know that crying can make us look weak sometimes, right? >> reporter: the president announcing sanders' departure later this month after nearly two years as white house press secretary. >> she has done an incredible job. we have been through a lot together. she is tough, but she's good. you also have tough and bad, right? >> reporter: sanders, the face of an administration known for clashing with the press -- >> the media continues to ratchet up the verbal assault against the president and everyone in this administration. >> reporter: notably coming under fire after she made the statement about the president firing james comey. >> countless members of the fbi that are grateful for the president's decision. >> reporter: asked about that statement by robert mueller's team, sanders said it was a slip of the tongue and she had no

evidence. what's next for sanders? >> i am a mom. i have three amazing kids, and i am going to spend a little more time with them. in the meantime, i'm going to continue to be one of the most outspoken and loyal supporters of the president and his agenda. >> reporter: meanwhile, democrats zeroing in on president trump, accusing him of giving foreign governments the green light to interfere in next year's election. >> the president gave us once again evidence that he does not know right from wrong. >> that's just dangerous, appalling, unethical, unpatriotic. >> reporter: after this stunning statement from the president when asked by abc news whether he would accept information from foreign powers about his 2020 opponents or call the fbi. >> i think maybe you do both. i think you might want to listen. there is nothing wrong with listening.
7:10 am
it's not interference. they have information. i think i'd take it. if i thought there was something wrong, i'd go maybe to the fbi. the. >> reporter: trying to clarify his comments. >> if you don't look at that, how do you know if it is bad. of course you give it to the fbi or report to the attorney general or somebody like that. but of course you do that. if i don't listen, you're not going to know. thousand, if i thought anything was incorrect or badly stated, i'd report to the attorney general, the fbi, i'd report to law enforcement absolutely. >> reporter: the head of the election commission tweeting out a statement saying that it is illegal for any person to solicit, accept or receive anything of value from a foreign national in connection with a u.s. election. >> all right. peter alexander at the white house. thank you.
7:11 am
meanwhile, the democratic national committee has now named the 20 candidates who will take part in the first primary debate of the campaign later this month in miami. >> there they are. they qualified based on polling. former vice president joe biden and senators bernie sanders and elizabeth warren are polling the highest. you can see the full list at be today.com/debate. >> also, the debate is going to be taking place june 26 and 27 from miami, florida here on nbc, msnbc, telemundo you will be a one of the moderators. an nbc news exclusive.hill. a one-on-one with anita hill it has been nearly 30 years since she was thrust into the spotlight with sexual harassment allegations against supreme su cour court nominee clarence thomas.
7:12 am
hill is now speaking out about the man who led that hearing and the presidential democratic field, joe biden here is andrea mitchell. >> reporter: anita hill in her first television interview since joe biden raising uncomfortable questions about the way he chaired the clarence thomas hearing nearly three decades ago. you said the "me too" movement was delayed for decades followed by the thomas hearings in 1991 do you think joe biden changed the course of history? >> i think that in totality the hearing changed the course of history. in some ways it brought the issue forward, but in other ways, the way the hearings were conducted, set us back because it became the model i think of other people. >> reporter: biden apologized before announcing his candidacy. she doesn't think the thomas confirmation should rule him out. >> i don't think they should have disqualified him. he is perfectly capable of running for president.
7:13 am
>> reporter: nor does she equate biden with donald trump, who denied accusations of sexual assault. >> i never said that and never intended to say that and i am not sure anything i said has hurt joe biden's campaign. he is still leading in the polls. >> reporter: could you conceive of voting for joe biden if he turns out to be the democratic nominee against donald trump >> of course i could. >> reporter: hill was frustrated by the brett kavanaugh hearings. women now on the panel but somey things have not changed. did you identify with christine blasey ford? >> i definitely did identify with her because it was still that intense pressure from this group of panelists on the committee who really didn't seem to understand the issue of sexual harassment at all. >> reporter: have you had any contact with her >> i have, actually. >> reporter: her message for other women? >> i could say i really am a survivorxperience it to be
