morning with some upper 50s. we'll see our skies gradually clearing today, headed into the upper 60s in oakland, and some upper 80s for some of our inland areas. so in the valleys, expect it to be a day where we have to crank the ac back up. we'll talk more about that and mike, you found a change in the tri-valley. >> we're looking at mostly green sensors. north bay you're at speed. in the tri-valley aside from the altamont pass i saw it in the last few minutes some slowing for 84, as you are cutting through here into pleasanton, livermore and toward sunol that started from red to orange. looked like they were clearing up overnight roadwork, that is typical at this time. getting toward the bay bridge your feeder routes toward the bay bridge are pretty much at the minimum time, maximum speed and over here, highway 4, the earlier crash cleared at bailey's, in contra costa county. back to you. >> thanks so much, mike. 5:01 right now. in a few hours, cal fire is taking measures to prevent wildfires in some of its most fire-prone parts of the bay

"today in the bay's" pete suratos joins us live this morning from mill valley with a look at the details. good morning, pete. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. actually we're going to talk with business owners about emergency power also because of wildfire danger. a couple hours further north they're going to suspend burn permits in those areas. now, cal fire officials will suspend burn permits for parts of northern california so we're talking way up north, yolo county, sonoma county, as well as napa county. officials say this is the result of yet another wet winter, as we all experience and warming temperatures, drying out that grass crop which would of course increase the fire danger. when it comes to the burn permits, we're talking about banning all residential outdoor burning of landscape debris, such as branches and leaves. that suspension of the permits will kick in at 8:00 a.m. later today. over in contra costa county, the focus is on weed abatement. the county fire department telling residents to get rid of any dry brush, cardboard, trash

or trimmings that can catch on fire. they refer to that as that defensible space. the deadline was sunday so take care of that in contra costa county. for the mill valley meeting with business owners that will take place at the community center in mill valley at 10:00 a.m. we're live in mill valley, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> all right, thanks for the latest there, pete. 5:03 right now. the caldecott tunnel is finally back open this morning, following a shooting. the chp is investigating after one person was shot about 8:00 last night. the tunnel connects highway 24 from oakland to mara ga. the fourth bore was closed for several hours. no word on the victim's condition. the deadly ghostship warehouse fire trial resumes today. defendant max harris is expected to take the stand. he and derek almena face charges for the fire that killed 36 people.

harris' lawyers deny the allegations and say that he was made a scapegoat for the tragedy. cameras are not allowed inside the courtroom but we will have a reporter there and have the latest details there for you throughout the day. a major new housing development in brentwood is taking a big step forward, and the project could be in the front of voters as early as this fall. "today in the bay's" roz plater is live for us in brentwood with the latest. roz? >> reporter: good morning, marcus. we have learned that the developers behind this project have gotten more than the 3500 votes needed to put this issue on the ballot before voters. let's look at the map and show you what we're talking about here. it would be built in western brentwood on 800-acre tract of land north of balfour and east of deer valley roads, it would include 2,400 homes in a development called the venue at deer creek. 80% of the homes would be for seniors. in order for the city to

accommodate the project, voters have to move moving brentwood's urban limit line, the petition drive to get the city council to put the issue before voters. >> this property will be developed either through brentwood or antioch, either by us or somebody else. you know what we've done here and what we're going to do there. if it's not us, it will be somebody else and not sure what that will bring. >> reporter: now there is opposition to that plan. folks who are worried about the traffic congestion and the strain it would put on the infrastructure that exists already. you'll hear from the alliance for better brentwood coming up in the next half hour. here is what happens next. the city council meets next week. they could decide to put this on the ballot this november or november of 2020, or if they order a special report, that could delay the project for now. for now we're live in brentwood. i'm roz plater for "today in the

bay." 5:05. developing now, demands for a leader of hong kong to step down are growing louder. more than 2 million protesters blocked roads, walkways and train stations to protest kari lam in hong kong over the weekend. protesters are upset about an extradition bill. in response to the violent protests she suspended the bill on saturday. however demonstrators say they want the bill permanently withdrawn. the ceo of boeing is speaking out on the troubled 737 max aircraft, apologizing for the deadly crashes. dennis muilenberg says boeing made a mistake in handling the faulty cockpit warning system. he added that boeing will work on its transparency with the public and faa, this comes after two 737 jets crashed this past year, one in indonesia, the other in ethiopia, killing 349 people. the planes have been grounded since the second crash in march.

this morning, we're learning more about a whale stranded in the san francisco bay. biologists say the whale nicknamed ali is in poor health. it's been stuck for more than two weeks. she appears to be underweight with a poor skin condition and a moderate amount of whale lice. they're asking you not to approach that whale. this week it is time for some laughs. comedy central's clusterfest is just around the corner. the festival will take place next weekend in san francisco. standup comedians, podcasters and improv actor also take the stage. some headliners include amy poehler, colin joust, john mullaney and anthony gesselnink. i think i'm saying that right. >> i don't know. >> tickets start at $300 for the three-day festival. trending this morning, anyone who thinks that chivalry

right now at 5:12, as you get ready to head out the door, it is a cloudy start. that's a live look outside over san jose. let's head over to willow glen. our temperatures will be in the mid-50s as you step out the door at 7:00, and then a nice warmup as we go through the morning. at 1:00, we're at 76 degrees. we'll get a look at our slightly warmer temperatures for today, that's coming up in less than five minutes. and looking at the peninsula drive, tail lights westbound across the san mateo bridge. no problems here, but i do spy something going on for 680, coming through alamo. we'll get the latest from chp. good morning, i'm frank holland at cnbc headquarters. wall street is set to open up higher this morning. stocks slumped on friday but the dow, the nasdaq and the s&p 500 all managed to post positive gains for the week. the dow is on its longest weekly winning streak in two months. the big focus for investor this

is week is the federal reserve which begins a two-day meeting tomorrow. the fed is widely expected to signal strongly they will cut interest rates sometime this summer or this fall. target says a smaller register outage yesterday was caused by a technical glitch at its payment vendor. it was not as widespread as saturday, when registers were down at all target storesor about two hours. the retailer says that was caused by an error during regular system maintenance. target's last widespread outage was back in june of 2014. walmart launched a delivery service. delivery unlimited costs 98 bucks a year and expands on the retailer's previous efforts. before customers could have items shipped to the nearest store for free or to their home for $9.99 per order. walmart introduced free one-day shipping for orders over $35. free shipping, that will have people dancing like marcus at a festival in san francisco this weekend. >> i got to check out that

81 in san jose with palo alto reaching 78 degrees. oakland in the upper 60s and napa today reaching 84 degrees. if you're still dealing with allergies, it's probably grass or weed pollen. right now that's moderate on the scale. everything else is pretty low, and so we're also going to have a breezy wind, carrying some of the allergens in, and at least we have the ocean breeze that's going to keep it cool but it was cloudy, misting and drizzling all weekend in san francisco. we'll see more clearing as the ocean breeze and the marie layer weakens a little bit. temperatures inland going up. we'll reach into the upper 80s for today and tomorrow, nothing really big here but we'll have a little bit of a cooldown headed into thursday. we'll warm things back up again in time for the weekend, with some upper 80s inland and some low 70s in san francisco. now, mike, you have a couple of changes in the east bay. >> i do. of course the bay bridge toll plaza, we see that build as we typically would about this time.

fast track lanes moving smoothly. the metering lights should register on in the next couple of minutes, judging by the backup here, but the easy approach, you see the 880 overcrossing on the maps in the area, we still have a nice easy drive coming down on the approach through its maze, and over here, contra costa county. we don't see any slowing for highway 4. out of brentwood, discovery bay, south vassco road to 580, it's a little slow out of the altamont, typical as well. look at the green here. no problems showing up on our maps as far as the volume goes. volume builds a little bit, though, through palo alto northbound with more headlights, not as many taillights headed through the area but once you get to mountain view, you will have that cross-town traffic, 237, 280. over here coming through the tri-valley there say smooth drive. we are building again with the travel time coming through the area out of the altamont pass because now more folks are making their way in toward sunol and 680 itself at the interchange. back to you. >> all right, thanks, mike. 5:19 for you right now.

this morning an investigation is under way after a stanford student is found dead on commencement weekend. police found the undergraduate's body in one of the campus residence halls. the cause of death has not been released nor the student's identity. police say there's no safety threat to anyone on campus. it is the fourth student death at stanford that has been reported since last february. and this morning, people in indiana are waking up to tattered homes, churches and a destroyed high school. this is new drone video showing apartment roofs torn off, after tornadoes hit the central part of the state. so far, the national weather service has confirmed nine total tornadoes touching down. the northern texas intense storm ripped through neighborhoods there as well, tearing up trees and uprooting them as well. both areas say the cleanup crews are already working. so far, no injuries have been reported. cities in argentina are slowly regaining power after

suffering a massive country-wide blackout. tens of millions of people were left in the dark yesterday. the neighboring areas of uruguay and paraguay went out power as well. argentina's news agency says most of the power is restored, however energy experts say they're still determining the cause of the widespread blackout. look here in north carolina an 8-year-old boy recovering from a shark attack. he was swimming along the coast yesterday when that shark bit him in his leg. authorities say the paramedics rushed to the boy and rushed him to the hospital and treated those wounds. thankfully he is expected to make a full recovery. he is now the third person to suffer a shark bite in that area this month. 5:24 for you right now. the mayor and police chief in phoenix expressing outrage after a confrontation with officers all caught on camera. >> we need to warn you some of the images you're about to see are disturbing. >> get out of the [ bleep ] car! >> investigators say the

confrontation happened in may. police say it started after a girl stole a doll from a nearby dollar store. video showed officers appeared to kick and push a handcuffed man believed to be the child's father. police are also shown handcuffing her pregnant mother. according to a police report, one of the officers feared the man was reaching for a weapon. the family says it now plans to sue the phoenix police department for $10 million. >> it was the scariest time of mai life. i have never been in a situation like this. >> at the end of the day, i have to take responsibility and be accountable. >> jay-z reached out offering to help the family with legal assistance. the mayor plans to hold a community meeting with the phoenix police chief tomorrow. san francisco 49ers legend joe montana's recovering this morning. >> just underwent shoulder replacement surgery. doctors are working on the same throwing shoulder responsible for so many touchdowns throughout his career. he tells "the mercury news" the hardest thing for him is to deal

"today in the bay's" pete suratos joins us live from mill valley this morning with some of the details. good morning, pete. >> reporter: yes, good morning to you laura. here in mill valley they'll discuss power shutoffs for business owners, taking place later this morning, but in just a few short hours, further north, they're going to suspend burn permits in certain areas. cal fire making that decision to

man along interstate 80. this happened shortly after 6:00 saturday night near orange drive and the old nut tree comple when offs arrived, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. his truck was nearby with several bullet holes in it. the man later died at the scene. police don't have much information about the shooter, and they're hoping witnesses will help them. >> 5:33. a major new housing development in brentwood is taking a big step forward and the project could be in front of voters as early as this fall. they ask for a special report, that could delay all of this. for now we're live in brentwood, i'm roz plater for "today in the bay." >> all right, roz, thank you. 5:34. and this morning, one man is dead and at least three others are hospitalized after a chaotic series of crashes in palo alto. this cash cam was taken by another car showing a driver driving in the wrong direction before the crash. after impact, the crash burst into flames and the wrong-way driver was killed. the other driver suffered major injuries. chp officers responded to that crash, another accident happening on the opposite side of the highway. here's what it sounded like when the two cars collided. >> when those vehicles came to rest, some of the passenger parties got out of those vehicles and as far as we know

right now, at least one passenger was struck by another vehicle on the roadway, and they're in serious condition as well. >> chp officers arrested one driver on suspicion of felony dui. there are questions this morning about employee safety at a pet boarding facility in the south bay. a woman is hurt after she was bitten by a dog. she works at the wag hotel in santa clara, and is the fifth staff member sent to the hospital. the employee says she was trying to break up a dog fight but one lashed back and bit her. it comes two days after a pit bull attacked four employees, severely injuring three of them. the latest worker is raising questions about safety protocols at wag hotels. >> another co-worker came in and wrapped my hand. thank god, because it made it stop being in pain for a while and i think it stopped the bleeding a lot as well. >> the dog is currently in the custody of the silicon valley animal control authority. gary woodland is the big winner of the u.s. open, played at pebble beach in monterey county. check it out.

valleys and again for the week with a dip toward the end of the week. here is a look at saturday and sunday's forecast, upper 80s in the valleys, and then it will be in the mid 80s on sunday. and for san francisco, we're up to 70. it looks like we'll see a little bit more sun this time around, and we'll also have slightly warmer temperatures. if you're planning to head out of town, going to yosemite, it's going to be nice, beautiful weekend. we don't have to worry about storms this weekend and we're going to see those highs in the low 70s and if you're looking closer to home in muir woods, 70 to 73 degrees as we see a mix of sun and clouds. this is a live look in squaw valley this morning, beautiful, still just a little bit of snow. if you're going there this weekend, there will be some upper 60s and low 70s and mostly sunny skies in half moon bay. we'll see at times the sun peeking out with highs reaching into the mid-60s. we'll get a look at today's temperature trend that's coming up in three minutes. >> all right, thanks, kari.

demanded money. he ran toward a nearby safeway. if you have any information, you're asked to contact police. a dramatic rescue in bodega bay. a father and three children were out canoeing yesterday afternoon. they couldn't pad toll safety and got stranded in campbell cove. rescue crews sailed out and helped pull the family from the cove. the coast guard gives the family credit for wearing life jackets but is reminding everyone to check weather conditions before hitting the water. 5:44 right now. in the sierra foothills, search crews looking for a plane that nose dived into lake toluk. the plane crashed into the water after witnesses say it hit a power line. this is a picture taken right after it happened. the sheriff's department says the pilot was the only person on board, and the plane quickly sunk after the crash. no word yet on what may have caused that crash. today marks the 25th anniversary of the infamous o.j.

simpson bronco chase. simpson led lapd on a slow chase in los angeles area in the now famous white ford bronco. he was chased and charged with the murders of his ex-wife, nicole brown simpson and her friend, ron goldman. simpson later returned to his home where he surrendered. tv helicopters followed that chase and spectors lined the streets holding signs, some reading "go o.j." it captured the attention of an estimated 95 million people. simpson was later found not guilty. he's currently living in las vegas and created a twitter account. in a video saturday simpson said he's "got a little getting even to do." he is referring to fake o.j. accounts and added that his would be official. on to developments when it comes to mexico and the u.s. it appears negotiations have taken a step forward. armed mexican soldiers could be spotted stopping cars north of the guatemalan border over the

weekend, part of the country's crackdown on migration in response to u.s. pressure. president trump threatened tariffs on mexican imports in the country if it didn't act on immigration issues. mexico is now deployed 6,000 members of its national guard to control people moving north from guatemala. 5:46. the checks and balances, president trump officially kicks off his re-election campaign tomorrow in florida, and a new interview is giving us a hint of how he'll try to win next year's election. every step of the way here on "today in the bay." >> this is a great one. jake larson is the martinez world war ii veteran. he finally returned back to the bay area from that historic trip. 96-year-old jake larson returned from normandy following the 75th anniversary of d-day. we caught up with him at his favorite spot the bagel street cafe. larson is the only survivor from his unit that stormed normandy beach during world war ii. he met the president in france, and people from all over the country who saw his story were moved. he found letters and money mailed to the bagel shop. >> even when i wake up in the morning, i'm sleeping in my own bed, and i say did this really happen to you? were you back in france celebrating d-day? it's so amazing.

if you're making your way out the door in pleasant hill headed to the b.a.r.t. station, upper 50s, grab a jacket. we'll have cool temperature togs start but warming up quickly noon at 80 degrees and mid 80s for some of our inland areas with antioch and livermore reaching 87. we'll be up to 87 in santa rosa, while san francisco stays in the upper 60s. palo alto reaches 78 degrees and 81 today in san jose. that's a live look outside in san jose. so as you're getting dressed, grab a jacket for the chilly temperatures we have this morning, but then short sleeves will be comfortable the rest of the day. you'll be putting the jacket back on if you're going to the a's game tonight, first pitch at 7:07 and we'll be in the upper 60s, a nice clear evening for heading out to the ball park and we'll have breezy winds coming in onshore. that's going to keep our s seasonable weather in place but it gets cooler as we head toward the end of the week as the winds pick up but overall, it doesn't look as extreme as the weather

we had last week even though it will be warming up today. we're in the upper 80s in the valleys and then some upper 70s by thursday, but they were going back up into the upper 80s by the weekend, and for san francisco, misty and drizzly today, but a little bit more sun over the next couple of days. and mike, you were tracking one crash with slowing for i-80. >> that's right. it's not the portion of the east shore freeway between the carquinez bridge and the bay bridge, that's aittle slowing through that area around hercules. in the north bay, west 80 looks like it may be in recovery mode between vacaville and the parkway headed toward fairfield, the earlier crash did leave one lane blocked for a while and i saw some slowing over the last few minutes. it looks like it might be clearing up so that's better news but for most of our viewers, it's not a factor unless it pulls you off of traffic building at the carquinez bridge which is always a good thing. the south bay up to the peninsula, no problems down that route, looking at san jose, i

ryan baker's case is the first involving cereal, oreo o's cereal. his friends in norway love it so they can't buy it there. he sent a $7 two-pack and paid the postal service $55 for shipping. he filled out the customs forms and was assured the cereal was on its way. however the box returned. ryan says norway's customs office assessed a $60 duty on $7 worth of cereal. ryan feels the postal clerk here who helped him send the box had given him bad advice on filling out the customs forms. so he canceled the shipment and asked for his $55 back. when the post office said no, ryan contacted us. we reached out to the postal service. it turns out the check box marked "gift" on the customs form here should have been checked, but was not. eventually the sacramento postmaster called ryan and refunded his $55 shipping fee. if you're dealing with a delivery dilemma, we deliver for you. 888-996-tips or go to
