where an officer is killed in the line of duty overnight. >> we are learning about her local ties here in the bay area. kris sanchez has more. >> she was a 26-year-old rookie that grew up in the east bay. officer tara o'sullivan was shot outside a home in sacramento where she was assigned to protect a mother moving out of a home in order to leave a domestic violence situation. that's when a man in that home shot the officer with a rifle. sacramento police say that as other officers tried to reach officer o'sullivan where she fell outside the home that suspect continued to fire at them as well. in fact, officers could not reach the officer to get her to the hospital for nearly an hour. the gunman finally surrendered overnight after an eight-hour standoff, and sacramento police just confirmed to us he's in custody and the scene is being

processed. the mother who was moving out of the home was uncertain. the acting police chief and mayor said that in her short life officer o'sullivan made clear she wanted to help her community. >> we're devastating tonight. there are no words to convey the sadness we feel or how heartbroken we are for the family of our young, brave officer. >> officer o'sullivan grew up in pleasant hill. according to concord police graduated from high school in 2011. she majored in child development in college. she graduated from the police academy in december. we know the suspect that allegedly shot the officer is now officially in custody and the scene is being processed. as we get more details about who that man is we will bring them to you as we get them into the

>> we are happy with how he's holding up. it's difficult and takes a lot of stamina to be on the witness stand, and we're going on a couple days and we are satisfied with what we are seeing today. >> harris told jurors he wished he had been upstairs to help people get out and had no idea 36 people died until he watched the news the next day. 6:07. a deadly hit-and-run in free mopped fremont yesterday. paramedics rushed the motorcyclist to the hospital but he did not survive. it's not clear if the person the car was registered to has been arrested. and then now a defense team wants the district attorney to bow out of one case. >> we are joined life from

walnut creek with the details. pete? >> reporter: contra costa county assessor wants the d.a. to recuse himself from the case but if that happens the state could take over his case. let's get into the details of this. kramer was the subject of a grand jury investigation saying he created a hostile work environment dating back to 2013. kramer says on his website he wants an opportunity to confront his accusers and three separate investigations exonerated him. if the motion is approved the state attorney general could take over that case. kramer's attorney plans to file that motion at the next court hearing in martinez set to take place on july 26th. reporting live, pete sz for today in the bay.

we want to get a check with the temperatures in the bay area. >> a nice cool start this morning and upper 50s, low 60s as you step out the door. as you make plans, maybe you are heading out to the park and enjoying some of the cooler weather, we're in the upper 50s but cloudy. we will start to see the clouds clearing out in hayward reaching near 70 degrees. enjoy it today. the winds will pick up this evening. check out the high temperatures today, and a few low 80s on the map and mostly in the 70s and 60s across the bay area. >> mostly green sensors, and there may be bits of a broken up pallet. westbound off of 880, there's a little buildup across the san

mateo bridge. we're looking at the drive across the flat section. no issues getting over on 101, and 280 almost along the peninsula drive good as well. 32 minutes now, we just broke the half hour mark from highway 4 to the backup standard at the bay bridge toll plaza. next, a video that would scare any parent. this is a close call for this little boy. this is just an innocent day at the beach. we will talk about wall street and a big ipo coming up today. lots of hugs and kisses there. it's 6:25. a return home after a long road to recovery for an east bay boy who accidentally shot himself. we will have an update on his condition.

day. we have a comfortable day ahead reach into the mid-70s by early afternoon. we're up to 78 in east san jose. for the east bay, only the early 80s. half moon bay keeps the clouds and the fog and reaching 60 degrees. palo alto seeing a high of 76. the marina district today reaching the upper 50s with breezy winds. one way you can enjoy the cooler weather, checking out the alameda county fair. that's still going on this evening. we'll be in the upper 70s. all clear skies and then cools off quickly. if you are out there this evening, bring a jacket. our weather set up changes over the next few days, and we have an area of low pressure to the

north of us producing rain across the pacific northwest. high pressure builds once again and our wind direction changes and that makes all the difference with our temperatures here during the summertime when we get an onshore wind flow, it feels cooler. that's what we have going on today. by the weekend, winds blow offshore and that's going to create more warming and our temperatures go up several more degrees. we go from the low 80s in the valleys today to the mid-80s tomorrow, not bad, and then we will have low 90s in the forecast with gusty winds. with the hot dry wind that could increase the fire danger in the hills, and that's something we have to watch throughout the weekend. by next week we are cooling it off again in the mid to upper 70s. mike, you have some odd news for silicon valley. >> yeah, putting it into context, 6:20 in the morning. we normally would see some slowing for 87, which we did in the northbound direction. that's your commute right here,

and that cleared up. also clearing, debris reported, and that's not a problem as far as chp is reporting. it's a good commute through this area. the pittsburg, almost always have in here in the morning. we're just over half an hour from highway 4 to the backup at the bay bridge toll plaza. highway 29 at the top of your screen there, that has been in place there with one lane blocked. it's a narrow roadway through that area. meanwhile, folks are squeezing through the bay bridge toll plaza. it looks like they all have a

welcome back. 6:24. this morning we are learning about the shooting of david ortiz. the lead prosecutor in the dominic republic said the former baseball player was not the intended target. the intended target was the man with ortiz the night of the shooting, and that shooting was oe orchestrated by a member of the mexican cartel. three months after a 4-year-old accidentally shot himself in the head he's back home this morning. >> this morning we are hearing

from the toddler's mother. she said the boy's survival can only be described as a miracle. he shot himself in the head with her ex-boyfriend's loaded handgun hidden under a pillow in that home. he is confind to a wheelchair and doesn't have use of his right arm but his mother said she realizes it could have been a much different outcome. >> when i was found him and i was sitting there with him during the incident, before the paramedics came, he was responsive. i said his name and he responded to him. i'm just blessed he's alive. >> look at the puppy. doctors are not ready to say if he will walk again but his mother believes he will beat the odds. sounds like a happy little boy, too. a miracle. people in the east bay can't say they are from the 510 anymore. a completely new area code is

680 also shows a pattern with slowing through pleasanton. the backup at the bay bridge and the build for the upper east shore here. back to you. >> thank you. we continue to follow breaking news out of sacramento. a rookie police officer shot and killed in the line of duty overnight. >> we learned she was responding to a domestic disturbance. kris sanchez has more on her ties to the bay area. >> the sacramento officer was a rookie who grew up in pleasant hill and was weeks away from going on patrol on her own. she was shot outside a home in sacramento where she was assigned to protect a mother who was moving out of her home to leave a domestic violence situation. a man in the home shot her with a rifle.

other officers tried to reach officer o'sullivan where she fell outside the home. the suspect continued to fire at them as well and fellow officers could not reach officer o'sullivan to get her to the hospital for almost an hour. sacramento police just confirmed in the last half hour the suspect is in custody only after a eight-hour stand off. the mother in the home was not hurt. the acting police chief and mayor said all officer o'sullivan wanted was to help her community. >> the captain shared she was always willing to help. >> she was a child development major from sacramento state, and she was committed to service and in the first graduating class of a ground-breaking program, the law enforcement candidate scholars program. >> that program meant to increase inclusiveness and eliminate bias. she grew up in pleasant hill and graduated from college park high

school in 2011 and went to diablo county college before graduating from sacramento state and the sacramento police academy in december. that academy is the same one where police officer natalie davis was from. it's not that this is increasingly happening to women police officers, and this only ill illustrates there are more women going into law enforcement. we will bring you more details as we get them, but a really difficult day for the sacramento police department and also for the east bay community of pleasant hill. >> very much so and really all officers because we will have a funeral to cover and she was just dedicated to helping others. so sad. also breaking right now, vta

workers voted down a contract that could have held off those worker strikes in the bay. we are live where the union is headquartered. what does it mean for people that use vta? >> it means a strike is more likely, marcus. we just heard from vta, and they reached out to gavin newsom's office to force a cooling-off period to force both sides back to the bargaining table, if that does not happen or if it were to fail then the union representing the workers would have to give 72 hours notice before going on strike. the local 265, they tell us they overwhelmingly voted down the last contract offer. the union has been in negotiations with the valley transit short, vta, since august. they voted down what vta says was their last, best and final

offer which included a increase over three years and a lump sum payment spread out over three years for pension benefits. vta released a statement. we were hopeful that after all these months of negotiating that atu union members would see this offer as fair and equitable. if the workers do go on strike, vta is ready to call in contract workers to drive buses, and service would be a fraction of what it is normally and light rail would shutdown since operating the trains requires a high level of skill and training. >> thank you. happening today, a standoff right now in the north bay.

police are in a standoff right now and they were responding to a minor vandalism report, and the suspect ran and locked himself into a bedroom, and they stress there's no threat to the general public. new details ae phurpemergin two deadly stabbings. police have a man in custody linked to one of the stabbings. neighbors that don't want to be identified say deputies sent several hours at this house yesterday, and they say the suspect, malik dosouqi, lives there with his parents. >> within the last three years, though, he's been a little weird. we always used to wave at each other and in the last couple years he would walk his dog and stop here and stare at us.

>> the suspect is accused of stabbing to death john pekipaki on tuesday night, and now officers are looking at a connection to a stabbing death of a taxi driver in the same remote area on monday night. one plan originally called for 2 million feet of office space and then city leaders held a public hearing to stop building offices and they want to add more housing and retail areas. office space would only create more workers which would make the already existing housing crisis worse. happening today the nba draft, the best college and international players will gather in new york city to find out where their nba careers will begin. this year's hot player, zion williams you see there from duke, he's expected to go to the pelicans as the first overall

the case. they plan to make that request at a later court in martinez. if that happens the state attorney general could take over the case. he says he welcomes the opportunity to confront his accusers and that three separate investigations exonerate him. it's a quarter to 7:00, and happening today a controversial state bill heads to the state capital. it would allow medical waivers for parents that don't want to vaccinate their children while cracking down on doctors that inappropriately issue them. the legislation now says it would allow for those reviews only with schools with immunization rates at 95%. pg & e is taking drastic steps for safety reasons. they are trying to pinpoint

a meeting yesterday between the republicans and democrats saying they were further apart than when they started. a u.s. drone shot down, and the u.s. says it was a surveillance drone unarmed and over international waters. president trump will be interviewed on telemundo tonight, and he has had a poor relationship with latinos when he said in his 2016 about latinos.

reaching the upper 70s and 78 degrees in cupertino, checking out the east bay with only a few low 80s here and oakland staying in the upper 60s. we'll be in the low 60s in half moon bay. redwood city reaching 73. and daly city reaching 62. we will see some upper 70s in much of the north bay today. if you are headed out to the a's game this evening we will be at about 63 degrees, so an extra layer or two needed because it's going to be breezy and cool out there. blowing around in all that wind, grass and weed pollen. mostly grass, ragweed and pine are the top allergens right now. heading into the weekend, high pressure builds once again and

then when we get that wind flow, those winds will heat things up across the bay area. we don't get our natural air-conditioning from the ocean breeze then. expect that saturday and sunday, and then changes next week. looking at the forecast, look at the drastic changes we will have from the 80s today and to the 90s on sunday and then mid-70s by next wednesday. that's a nice cooling change. you are seeing slowing now, mike, through the south bay. >> the reason i call it the south is because north is looking good considering the commute. hayward, yes, we see the build near the san mateo bridge. that's not bad. northbound 101 slowing up towards middle field where we have your left lanes blocked by a disabled vehicle. we are seeing the slowing and the build off of westbound 237, and we tracked that.

welcome back. before you head out the door it's 6:56. here's the top stories we are can you having here on "today in the bay." >> a police officer shot and killed in the line of duty while responding to a domestic disturbance. tara o'sullivan graduated from the sacramento police academy six months ago. she was weeks away from going on patrol on her own. the suspect shot at other officers, however nobody else was hurt. also breaking right now, vta workers voted down a contract that could have headed off a workers strike. here's a live look where the union is headquartered.

they overwhelmingly voted down the latest offer from vta by a 9 to 1 margin. if the workers do go on strike they will still have to give 72 hours notice. the state could also order a cooling-off period to force both sides back into negotiations. a deadly hit-and-run in fremont is under investigation. it's a story we first told you about. fremont police say a driver hit a motorcyclist and ran away on foot and left the victim in the road. the paramedics rushed the motorcyclists to the hospital but he did not survive. happening today the bay area is back front and center on wall street. we showed it to you live at 6:30. the messaging service is expected to start selling at $26 a share, making the company worth $16 million.

grocery outlet has more than 300 stores across the country. jeff bezos is giving more insight into the company's lunar plans. he says he is building a spacecraft that will be powered with fuel harvested from the moon. he unveiled this last month. while speaking at the space summit yesterday, he said the device is powered by an engine that uses oxygen and hydrogen as the two fuel sources. >> we know one day we will be resraouli resraor refuelling that vehicle on the surface of the moon from repellants made from the moon. >> he previously said it fits nasa's plan to return astronauts
