as a preview of round two, with ten new candidates a 21-year-old woman is dead after an encounter with sharks while vacationing in the bahamas. the faa has discovered another problem with the boeing 737 max. "early today" starts right now >> good thursday morning >> the nation has now got on the hear from ten of the democratic candidates some well-known faces and many lesser known presidential hopefuls took the debate stage and made themselves heard. >> do you have a plan to deal with mitch mcconnell >> i do. short of a democratic majority in the senate, you better understand the fight still goes on [ speaking foreign language >> that image of oscar and his daughter is heartbreaking.

favor of a government-run plan just a show of hands to start out with >> reporter: so interesting, you can see there were a variety of responses there from the candidates some think that washington should go all in and make sure that everyone has health care. others said that if you already have private insurance, let's stick with that and only change what needs to be changed internationally on iran. another hand raised where candidates were asked would you go back with the iran nuclear deal that president trump has abandoned. everyone said yes except for cory booker. cory booker said he would like to take the opportunity to get a better deal. in the midst of all this turmoil that's going on right now with iran afghanistan was another area where we saw a couple of the candidates clash time -- tim lyon and tulsi
4:04 am
gabbert whether or not we should stay in fight in afghanistan there was sort of an overall theme about america not working for working families, and there was a lot of talk about whether big corporations are getting away with too much, whether it was the economy or health care and health insurance now, president trump apparently was watching he tweeted one word -- boring. back to you. >> on his way to the g20 on air force one. thank you, tracy let's bring in a former adviser to hillary clinton who helped secretary clinton prepare for debates in 2016. so somebody familiar in this room we all know the goal for all the candidates was to stand out, break apart, especially for the

lesser known candidates. who accomplished that the most >> well, to start, not to be of the debate is to help educate the democratic party and really the american voter on who these folks are, what they stand for, what they want to do and that very much happened, and nbc, msnbc and telemunldo deserve a great deal of credit this is not easy to put together, and the moderators kept it going. i think the very first moment of the debate might have been the most important in a sense, in that, that group photo just encapsulated where we are at the moment we have never seen more than one woman on a debate stage. there were five people of coloa. this just shows how wide and broad the democratic party is. and i think if i were donald trump and i was watching tonight, i would be a little worried, because there were a couple of presidents on that stage, and will be a couple more tomorrow night i think in terms of winners an'e
4:06 am
people that. but i'll take a shot elizabeth warren was declared a winner because she did tonight what she did every day just going out there and she has a plan for everything. she clearly had a debate plan and it worked. i think joe biden won, even though he wasn't there, because no one said a peep about him no one attacked him. on the losing side, i don't think beto o'rourke had a marly good night he just didn't seem very high energy he was the focus of attack on a few people and i think donald trump was a loser, because he should be looking at this field as a danger and then looking ahead to tomorrow night, i would say, you know, bernie sanders needed elizabeth warren to take a little more heat than she did tonight, because joe biden and elizabet voters. he needs them back, and i think he's going to be a littlfety, bd warren in absten cha >> trump did escape largely

unscathed. but senator klobuchar did have this to say. >> i would make sure if there's any possibility of a conflict and we're having this debate in congress right now, that he comes to congress for an authorization of military force. i would do that. and this president is literally, every single day, ten minutes away from going to war, one tweet away from going to war and i don't think we should conduct foreign policy -- >> your time is up >> we know the president thought that whole thing was boring. but i wanted to get your reaction to that jab there >> it was interesting on the whole. he came up a lot less than i would have thought in part because one of the reasons that joe biden is leading close to 40% of the field is that he has shown that people believe he has the attributes to go toe to toe with trump. i would have thought that more people would have done what amy
4:08 am
klobuchar did tonight, which is to shohei, i can also go toe to toe. shot not by name calling, but making an important about going to war and getting congress' approval and authorization. so it was interesting watching the ten of them on the question of impeachment, and what they would do as president if donald trump were a private citizen they were kind of all over the board. it was interesting to see that there was no single, coherent approach and i don't know what's right and what's wrong it will be because joe biden has been going trumpread and butter on >> andwill be the case so is that mostly what you'll be looking for tonight, and given tonight, do these candidates on night two have more of an advantage because they were able to watch and dissect what happened last night? >> they do when i looked at the first of the 20 people laid out, i don't

think anyone got an assignment that was bad for them. elizabeth warren got a great one, and she was the leadoff, she was first night, she doesn't worry too much about being attacked or attacking, which is a positive experience. the people going tomorrow night definitely have the advantage. there are a lot of campaign prep teams who are as surprised as some of us about what happened and trying to figure out what to do but the best teams and the best candidates have a plan thti they have 24 hours to fine tune of it. but we might see more of the same i do think bernie is probably going to be a little frisky. >> i can imagine so. thank you for your perspectives. tune in for round two tonight as the ten candidates take the stage right here on nbc. immigration was front and center on the debate stage last night with candidates making several references to a haunting
