good morning, everybody. welcome to "today" on this thursday morning from miami and new york craig, good morning, night one is done. but we're really just getting started. round two is tonight. >> good to see you, my friend. a lot of folks, more bleary eyed than usual after staying up last night to watch that first batch of democratic contenders. >> no question about it, yours truly included that's our top story the first group of democratic hopefuls sharing the stage for the first time, introducing themselves and their ideas to voters we are going to break it down with chuck todd. but first, let's go to nbc's peter alexander, down on the floor of the debate hall with highlights >> reporter: it was a fight for time as much as anything else for these democrats. elizabeth warren, and cory booker among those setting the tone last night. julian castro having a good performance, introducing himself to millions of americans for the democrats it was a chance to come up with the best formula to defeat donald trump and to address the challenges

facing all americans and they're off, the first ten democrats looking to the white house saving their sharpest jabs for the man they want to defeat. >> the biggest threat to the security of the united states is donald trump, and there's no question. >> i don't think we should conduct foreign policy -- >> your time is up. >> in our bathrobe at 5:00 in the morning. >> on january 20, 2021 we'll say adios to president trump. >> reporter: the debate strikingly substantive on plans to overhaul the economy -- >> when you've got an economy that does great for those with money and isn't doing great for everyone else that is corruption, pure and simple. we need to call it out we need to attack it head on. >> it's about time that we have an economy that works for everybody, not just the wealthiest in our nation. >> reporter: on health care, two candidates, senator elizabeth warren and new york city mayor bill de blasio coming out in favor of eliminating private insurance in favor of a medicare for all system

on immigration, the contenders reacting to the searing photo of a father and his young daughter lying dead as they try to enter the u.s. >> watching that image of that man and his daughter is heartbreaking. it should also piss us all off. >> reporter: the sharpest exchange between two texans former housing secretary julian castro and beto o'rourke over whether to decriminalize illegal crossings. >> ensure we don't criminalize those who are seeking asylum and refuge in this country, if you are fleeing desperation, then i want to make sure - >> i'm still talking about everybody else. >> reporter: o'rourke and senator cory booker at times speaking spanish to emphasize the importance of latino voters. [ speaking spanish ] the debate also marking the first in history with more than one woman on the presidential stage. >> i just want to say there's three women up here that have

fought pretty hard for a woman's right to choose. >> reporter: the candidates arguing r stri gun laws. >> we can't treat this as an across the board problem we have to treat it like a public health emergency. >> reporter: and pushing for an aggressive approach to combat climate change. >> donald trump is simply wrong. he says wind turbines cause cancer we know they cause jobs. >> reporter: all of the contenders ask what they view as the greatest geopolitical threat. >> our existential threat is climate change. >> climate change. >> nuclear proliferation and climate change. >> china and climate change. >> russia because they're trying to undermine our democracy and they've been doing a pretty damn good job of it. >> reporter: during a night heavy on policy with some technical interruptions, one viewer was unimpressed president trump aboard "air force one" tweeting, "boring." so now they head into night two where center stage will be the former vice president, the front runner joe biden

notably his name was not mentioned once by those ten connects last night but this evening there will be four of the top six democrats on stage, biden will be flanked by kamala harris, bernie sanders and pete buttigieg. >> chuck todd is with me host of "meet the press. last night, chuck, it was lively the gloves weren't totally off but they were ready to mix it up with each other. >> they were one of the wild cards i thought going into this debate was the dichotomy between those who knew they would have a second or third debate to go to and those who thought it was their one and only opportunity i saw -- i want to be careful how many we single out here. i saw some of these one percenters who realized, you know what, i bettedo something now if i want to get on this stage again. i don't want to say desperation, but there was a little janis joplin in them. freedom is nothing left to lose attitude >> the pressure was on it potentially is a make or break for so many of these candidates lingering at the

bottom of the polls. >> the other thing i was reminded of, both watching the debate, one hour, and participating in it, is those that have been familiar in politics and have done this before you could see -- particularly the mayor of new york city, somebody who's -- bill de blasio looked, for better or worse when you're the mayor of new york city, you deal day to day with press, you can banter boy, his comfort of being a little interruptive, it rattled a couple other candidates who had never done this before >> if you're watching last night those ten candidates is that in your view from a policy perspective is that a snapshot of where the democratic party is right now? >> if you look at last night in isolation, i would say no. ask me again after tonight last night i would say it leaned farther to the left in totality than maybe where the party is. we're going to find out tonight. but if you look that cory booker who i would have said tries to straddle the two wings he sounded a little farther to the

left than he has on some issues. he moved in that direction amy klobuchar, the one moderate sort of staking out that sort of mainstream centerist lane here tonight joe biden, even kamala harris, i'll be curious to see if she's going to try to straddle the two lanes, pete buttigieg with his own challenges tonight but the same thing after tonight you'll see the party is a little -- there's a wider ideological spectrum. >> the big question tonight, joe biden, the former vice president, he comes in leading substantially in every poll. do you think the candidates are going to come out there and be swinging because they think they've got to take him down a notch? >> you know, you've got to be careful if you swing too hard. nobody likes -- especially right now in our first debate, you don't want to be overly negative but given what we saw last night and the comfort that they had in mixing it up i think you are going to see -- i think you're going to see some candidates look at what particularly some of the wings did and try to emulate that strategy.

inevitably the agenda revolves around the president himself president trump arriving in osaka in a rainstorm this morning as dark clouds loom around the world, including the iran crisis. before heading overseas the president talking tough. >> and we're going to be meeting with a lot of different countries, many of whom have been taking advantage of the united states but not so much anymore. >> reporter: mr. trump bristling at questions whether he would warn russian president vladimir putin. osaka marks the first time mr. trump and mr. few tin will be face to face since special counsel robert mueller concluded his investigation into russian meddling days before mueller will testify publicly president trump picking a fight with india for setting high import tariffs, unacceptable he tweeted, he'll meet the prime minister this weekend. the president's packed schedule begins with japan's prime

minister abe, perhaps his closest ally on the world stage, north korea expected to be a key talking point. the president later sits down with president putin, iran, north korea, venezuela all likely to come up. and his meeting with president xi of china will be crucial, will it help ease the u.s./china trade dispute? iran will be central to conversations with leaders from saudi arabia to turkey to europe, the president promising no end to the tough sanctions on iran. >> iran can do whatever they want it's just fine i have plenty of time. but they have a country that's in economic distress it's an economic disaster right now. >> reporter: this promising to be another tough few days for international diplomacy. already a flurry of diplomacy, the leader of south korea and of china meeting in osaka saying they believe north korea does

still want to negotiate and is committed to denuclearization and reports too craig that president trump and president xi of china are set to announce some kind of a deal on trade that would delay those tariffs but of course this is the g20 and this is president trump, craig, anything can happen. >> keir simmons in osaka, japan, thank you. back to a major topic during last night's debate, immigration and this morning we're getting a firsthand look at that border patrol station accused of keeping migrant children in "appalling conditions. nbc's gabe gutierrez is there. gabe, good morning >> savannah, good morning. immigration attorneys who toured the facility last week described unsanitary conditions. the border patrol is pushing back during a tour, we noticed improvements but we also learned overcrowding at this facility was much worse than we first thought. we want to warn you some of the images in this story are disturbing this morning immigrant advocates are asking a federal judge to

issue an emergency order requiring immediate inspections at border detention facilities the court filing comes just days after reports of filthy and overcrowded conditions at this border patrol station in clint, texas. >> cbp officials are letting us inside for the first time. no cameras allowed. just pen and paper >> reporter: they tell us this facility is set to hold 106 migrants but a month and a half ago there were almost 700 children here. now it's much less crowded and agents showed us it was stocke with supplies and food the children we saw appeared to be clean and were watched by monitors and meanwhile there's gridlock in congress over emergency aid for the border the house approved $4.5 billion. the senate passed a different version of the bill but now lawmakers can't agree on specifics. the president wants changes to asylum laws. >> if we had the right laws that the democrats are not letting us have, those people, they wouldn't be coming up, they wouldn't be trying >> the president continues to

blame democrats but the real problem is the president. >> reporter: fueling the raging immigration debate this heartbreaking image of oscar ramirez and his 20 month-year-old daughter drowning as they tried to swim across the rio grand. >> i hope that picture alone will catalyze this congress, this senate, this system to do something. >> reporter: this is home video of their family. mother tanya watched in horror as the water swept her husband and daughter away. oscar's mother in el salvador is devastated >> this is actually where we found -- >> reporter: captain chris menendez with the water rescue team says they've seen seven drownings in the last month. >> why do you think that is? >> seems to be an influx of

people trying to come across. >> reporter: now during our tour of the border patrol station here, we were not allowed to speak to any of the children we saw children in nine cells in a central processing area. they were allowed to come out one at a time to use showers, the restroom and a phone i did notice one older girl crying as she returned to her cell that was the only incident of a child in distress. now, savannah what struck me is how in the world they were able to cram 700 children at one point into this border patrol station. >> gabe, i read your report when you just came out of there, and when you said 700 people in a place that was supposed to hold about 100, if i had that right, i was shocked myself thank you very much, appreciate your reporting. >> and breaking overnight police in utah may have a lead in the case of that missing college student who has not been seen since she took a lyft ride from the salt lake city airport nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer has the latest. what do we know? >> reporter: police have been working around the clock to

develop new leads and overnight officers served a search warrant on a home in salt lake city, authorities still searching for clues as to why mackenzie has gone off the grid. overnight a possible break in the case of missing utah college student mackenzie lueck. >> we have served a search warrant on this home. >> reporter: salt lake city police raiding this home near the park where lueck was last seen outside the house, police setting up a mobile command center crime scene technicians scouring the house for hours. detectives appearing to pay close attention to an unattached garage near the back of the property a vehicle was also reportedly towed from the scene neighbors surprised. >> there was all the detective cars and then later six or seven marked cars came in. that's when we kind of knew something was wrong. >> reporter: the 23-year-old university of utah student has now been missing ten days. she returned to salt lake city

from her grandmother's funeral in california. her last communication a text to her mother telling her she landed safely. police releasing the last known photos of lueck from the airport where surveillance cameras caught her exiting the plane, waiting for her luggage and leaving the terminal according to the police lueck took a lyft to this park several miles from her home where she was dropped off just before 3:00 in the morning investigators believe another car was waiting. >> the lead we developed led us here >> reporter: the home a seven minute ride from the park where she was dropped off. >> i said hi a couple times, but never a response. >> reporter: neighbors say the man who lives there keeps to himself. >> this is a friendly block and everybody knows everybody. but we really didn't know him. very reclusive and not super neighborly >> reporter: police have not named any suspects in the case

democratic debate. that's the top of our headlines this morning all ten candidates arrived last night and they agreed on one thing, saying the economy under president trump is benefiting the rich but they didn't always see eye to eye on issues like immigration, foreign policy and health care. the contenders spent most of their time introducing themselves to voters and their ideas as well. ten more hopefuls will take the stage tonight for the second part of this two-night event. a former university of southern california gynecologist was arrested on wednesday, accused of sexual misconduct involving students george tyndall is charged with sexually assaulting 16 young women under the guise of medical exams, the charges come after an 18 month long investigation, hundreds of other women have come forward to blame tyndall saying they were also abused he's maintained innocence and according to his lawyers remains adamant he will be totally exonerated. the federal aviation administration has identified a new potential risk in the boeing 737 max software update that the company must address before the grounded jet can return to service. the problem with the plane's was discovered during a

simulator test last week the new issue means boeing will not conduct the test flight until july 8th at the earliest the jets were grounded in march in the wake of those two deadly crashes within five months. we're learning more about the young american who was killed in a terrifying shark attack in the bahamas, an incident raising red flags for beach goers here in the united states as well as we head into this 4th of july kerry sanders has more on that this morning kerry, good morning. >> reporter: craig, we now know the woman who died here was a 21-year-old from torrance, california vacationing with her family authorities say she was just offshore snorkeling when she was attacked by multiple sharks. a day of fun in paradise quickly turning to terror for a california family. 21-year-old jordan lindsay was snorkeling with her mother when police say she was attacked by

up to three sharks her right arm was torn off, and she was bitten multiple times by the sharks she was rushed to the local hospital where she died from her wounds overnight jordan's father telling nbc news the attack happened so fast my wife tried her best to get her up to the shore, but unfortunately jordan lost too much blood we are still all in shock. officials say the family had been swimming at a popular snorkeling spot near rose island, a tiny stretch of land just miles northeast of nassau when the attack occurred this attack, similar to another incident in the bahamas two years ago, tiffany johnson of north carolina lost her arm in that attack. >> he had my whole arm in his mouth and fear just gripped me. >> reporter: she talked to me last year on her first visit back to the bahamas. >> to be back where your life changed so dramatically, what's it like? >> i got really emotional

thinking about this is where it was supposed to end for me. >> reporter: there's been a surge of attacks along the east coast in recent weeks. >> we're on the ocean isle beach. there's a shark attack >> there's somebody in the water bleeding. >> reporter: including three along the north carolina shore this month alone. >> it was like a lot of pressure on my foot and it kind of like tugged me down >> reporter: all of it as more swimmers are heading to the beach as summer kicks in. >> kerry, what more do we know about the victim here, jordan lindsay? >> reporter: well, that she was a student at loyola merry mount university, much loved and not only somebody who was much loved but somebody who so there is a page set up to help raise money for her funeral and to bring her body back to the united states. but also to support something that she cared about so much

called the gentle barn her father saying about that support, that rescue center, that she was so caring she loved all animals. it's ironic she would die getting attacked by a shark. >> kerry sanders for us there, kerry, thank you and you were just down in the bahamas shooting a story. >> earlier this week we were working on something, and we went diving with sharks and it was under a controlled situation. it reminds you these are wild animals and unfortunately they can mistake us for food. but, you know, still, it's a tragedy. didn't see this coming. >> what are we looking at on the map here >> we're looking at strong storms firing up in the plains today. got a severe thunderstorm watch right now for the eastern dakotas, onto much of central minnesota. that risk is across six states today, storm hazards, tornados possible for up to 10 million people for tomorrow the northern plains under the gun, tornado risk low

that story here's the thing, though, and after the stonewall riot story yesterday we talked a little bit about this, there have been a lot of advancements but there's still a great deal of work to be done with regards to the lgbtq community. >> that's right. one thing we always have to remember, and i always tell people this, lesbian, gay, bisexual youth are five times more likely to attempt suicide than their straight peers. the thing we hear over and over again is the power of visibility every one of those young people we talked to referred to someone on tv, someone in the movies, a youtube influencer, or someone in their own community, a neighbor or a teacher. that visibility gives them the strength to come out themselves and know it's going to be okay. >> even you sharing your own story, you can imagine somebody is watching you. >> i grew up in a small town, population hovered around a thousand so coming out in the late '90s there wasn't an option, i went to college at northwestern and that's when i started to see other people my age out and proud. >> made a difference. >> made a huge difference. >> made it easier for me to tell my family.
