>> viva las vegas. headlines overseas. top story. president trump's wide ranging news conference hours ago and an extraordinary offer to meet the north korean dictator kim jong-un in the demilitarized zone between north and south korea tomorrow. kristin welker is traveling with the president. she was at the news conference in japan. kristin, good morning. >> reporter: peter, good morning to you from osaka. this is a diplomatic cliffhanger. will kim jong-un accept president trump's invitation to meet him at the dmz? the president building suspense with that freewheeling news conference that lasted more than an hour overnight, all coming on the heels of critical foreign policy talks. this morning president trump touching down in south korea after unleashing this extraordinary tweet. if chairman kim of north korea sees this, i would meet him at

the border dmz just to shake his hand and say hello. during an overnight news conference the president was pressed on whether the meeting will actually take place. >> spoke with the people. kim jong-un was very receptive. he responded and so we'll see because tomorrow we're going to the dmz. i said while i'm there, i'll shake his hand. >> reporter: even saying he would be willing to walk across the border into north korea, but what if kim doesn't show up. >> of course i know that. if he doesn't, people will say, he was stood up by chairman kim. >> reporter: if the two meet it would be the first time u.s. and north korean leaders would come face to face at the dmz and mark the third meeting between the two men. their last summit ended abruptly with no deal. >> we won't call it eye summit, we'll call it a handshake if it does happen. >> reporter: it all caps the high stakes foreign policy talks

at the g20 summit where president trump announced overnight that talks have resumed between the u.s. and china hitting the pause button on a trade war that had global markets on edge. and on russia, president trump was pressed on this moment where he smiled when he was asked if he would tell russia's president vladimir putin not to medal in the u.s. election again. >> don't medal. >> it seemed like maybe you didn't really mean it when you said yesterday, don't medal in our elections, mr. president, and then you guys both started laughing. >> you're going to have to take a look at the words, i did say it. >> reporter: but offered this explanation. >> he denies it totally. how many times can you get somebody to deny something? he has in the past denied it. he's denied it also publicly. >> reporter: and the president weighing in on the battle to replace him after senator kamala harris sparred with joe biden about his record on race. >> i thought that she was given too much credit.

he didn't do well certainly, and maybe the facts were unnecessarily on his side. i think she was given too much credit for what she did. >> reporter: what we do know about the president's trip to south korea, he's going to hold talks with that country's president and then address u.s. troops that are stationeds there before heading home on sunday. peter and shanel. >> kristin welker traveling with president trump. thank you. let's turn to jeremy bash who was in the obama administration. >> hey, guys. >> president trump tweeting inviting kim jong-un to the demilitarized zone. put this into perspective for us. the last talks broke down. since then north korea has started missile tests. what's the risk/reward? >> my possible thought is, hey, i happen to be in the neighborhood, can we get together? it looks a little bit sad, a

little bit desperate. north korea has not dismantled its nuclear program in violation of u.n. security council resolutions. i think this is a huge concession if it happens and we get very little for it. >> let's talk about vladimir putin if we can for a second. the president and putin meeting during the course of this summit. the first time they were together since robert mueller determined that the russian government was responsible for interfering in the 2016 election in a sweeping and systematic fashion. the president seemed to brush off the russians not interfering and on fake news even though they are said to kill 25 journalists since putin came to power. now he's inviting putin to commemorate the end of world war ii? >> yeah, peter, i think the president is giving a green light to russia to medal again

in our 2020 election, and in effect what we've gone with through the president, first he said no collusion, then he said collusion isn't a crime and recently he said collusion is good, i welcome it and i wouldn't tell the fbi. so when he sits next to vladimir putin and the head of russia, in a sense he says, we welcome your involvement. he sends the wrong signal. >> the president does often seem more at ease when he's with strong men than when he's with america's own allies. let me put up a picture from a couple of hours ago. 24 this is the g20 picture. that's mohamed bin salman. the two obviously engaged in a good conversation there. the president said he was very angry with the saudis and the fact that they're responsible for the death of a washington post columnist but he also praised the crown prince there even though the u.n. determined it was the crown prince and the

royal family that were behind this. does this give more ammunition to the president's critics? >> there's a little something for every autocrat. we talked about north korea, we talked about russia. he's made a huge concession to china, to xi shipping ping on the issue of trade and we're going to hold off on tariffs and sell to huawei. he knows he needs our gulf arab partners to confront iran, which is very much still a tinder box in the northeast. >> can i ask you one china question? >> yes. >> you brought up huawei. the president banned american companies from providing products to huawei. they're believed to be involved in spying not just in the u.s. but around the globe. the president seems to have backed off. he has gotten criticism. the message there? >> from the national security perspective, it's very concerning. what the president may be

saying, we may have security concerns, but you may buy your way out. if you pay us enough, we'll relax our policies. >> the democratic candidates that want to replace president trump are running hard in the battleground states. front-runner joe biden is on the defense today over the issue of bussing and race with kamala harris. we're joined live from new hampshire, the home of the nation's first primary. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the 20 democratic candidates are spanning out around the country including bernie sanders campaigning in new hampshire today. the effectiami debate are rippling. democratic presidential front-runner joe biden on the defensive friday over the issue of race. >> before i start, i'd like to say something about the debate we had last night. i never, never, never, ever

opposed voluntary bussing. and as a program that senator harris participated in and made a difference in her life. >> reporter: on stage at an event hosted by reverend jesse jackson, biden did defend his record. >> i took on the banks and red lining and trying to change the way in which neighborhoods were segregated. >> biden making his comments one day after senator kamala harris slammed him for opposing federally mandated bussing back in the 197 os. >> do you agree today that you were wrong to oppose bussing in america? >> no. >> do you agree? >> i did not oppose bussing in america. >> reporter: their discussion of bussing, segregation and civil rights picking up right where it left off. >> do you think he's racially insensitive in a way that makes him a poor fit to be president of the united states? >> i wouldn't say that. i just think he and i have a

difference of opinion. >> reporter: with the first debate behind them, on friday harris and a number of other presidential candidates visited the homestead facility for migrant children. >> you and i pay for this place. what is being done in this building is being done with our name and with our money. it is wrong. >> reporter: harris and biden are on the west coast raising money. bernie sanders will be campaigning here in new hampshire. it's still very early in this contest. safe to say a lot more americans are paying attention. 18 million people watched that debate on thursday night. that's the most for a democratic primary event ever. >> we're just getting started. thank you. also this morning, a tragic turn in the search for a missing utah college student. police say mackenzie lueck was murdered and a salt lake city man is charged with her death. just an awful story. >> good morning.

mackenzie lueck's death captured the world's attention. they traced her remains to the suspect's home. >> reporter: this morning a salt lake city man under arrest facing charges for the murder of 23-year-old university of utah student mackenzie lueck missing since last week. >> car 30 can you also send me two more units? >> reporter: ayoola ajayi surrendered. >> aggravated murder, aggravated kidnapping, obstruction of justice and desecration of a body. >> reporter: lueck was last seen alive june 17th arriving at the salt lake city airport at 2:00 a.m. police say she then took a ride on lyft, ended up at a park and left with someone an hour later. phone records show that ajayi was the last person lueck contacted. >> all communications ceased for

mackenzie at 3 a.m. on june 17th. >> reporter: meanwhile, the investigation intensified at the suspect's home. neighbors said they saw him burning something in the backyard. >> excavation of the burn area resulted in finding personal items of mackenzie lueck. other charred material was located which has now been forensically -- has been determined to be female human tissue. >> reporter: ajayi is a former member of the utah national guard and a self-published author. he met with a contractor, brian wolf, who said he had a strange request. >> when we started talking about building the secret door with the room and all that stuff. he wanted like a thumb print lock on it and sound proof. he wanted hooks on the walls. >> reporter: wolf said he had an odd feeling and turned down the job. this morning with a motive still

unknown, police say the investigation isn't over. >> and nbc news has reached out but it's still unknown if the suspect has any representation just yet. his first court appearance is set for monday but probably new details. >> kelly, thank you -- kathy, thank you very much. let's take a turn to positive news. the women's world cup in paris, team u.s.a. is flying high a day after beating the host country, 2-1. now we have nbc's kelly cobiella covering all of the action to you. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. oh, my gosh, what a match. just a complete nail biter right down to the end. this was the game everybody's been talking about way back since the start of the tournament. a huge match-up between the number one u.s. women's team and a fierce france. this morning team u.s.a. is still on top. it took just over 90 minutes to

problems. elderly, anyone with asthma problems. you want to eliminate that. temperatures are going to be very, very hot. humidity is high. minneapolis, 104 is what it's going to feel like today. wichita is 93. raleigh, 79 degrees. tomorrow we are going to get a bit of a break from the heat. temperatures dropping back down into the 80s. the humidity drops. feels like temperature still hot. 89 degrees is a little better. charleston, montgomery, alabama. 101 des moines and going into next week we will start to cool off by monday, tuesday. temperatures will be more seasonable. the heat ramps right back up as we get this to the end of the week. speaking of europe and the heat wave they have been dealing with. kelly mentioned it was the hottest day ever on record in parts of southern france with 115 degrees.

trans community. many people say it's important to get involved in festivities. the biggest event is tomorrow's parade. joe biden is scheduled to attend a fundraiser in los altos this morning. belvedere guests arriving about an hour before the candidate. the fundraiser was at the home of a longtime democratic committee fundraiser. >> i don't think he did a great job, although i think he's getting unfair criticism. >> he should have been better prepared. but he was also wonderful when talking about his son and medical care. and so he's a good guy.

stuck in flood waters. this calf trying to get out of the flood waters. everyone affected including the animals. today we're starting off the morning with our heaviest rain falling across northern north dakota. we have severe flood warnings in effect and torrential downpours. this is going to be an area we need to watch later on this afternoon for more storms to fire up and across the northeast. we have a frontal system that's going to combine with heat and humidity and storms throughout the day today. first across the upper midwest where we could see winds up to 60 to 70 miles per hour and very large hail and also in the northeast. later on this evening after 4:00, 5:00, that's where we could see large hail and damaging winds as well. it is the cold front moving to the east. it's kind of a slow process even though it looks like the storms are firing up. they won't get going until later on today. this will continue to slide to the south. we've got cool 40s and 50s,
