outdoors. this is only going to set us up for a greater warmup. i'll have a look at what you can expect going into the work week and pride tomorrow. >> thanks. 7:01 and the fire is out but there's a lot of work to be done. taking a live look in santa clara. this is where firefighters continued to douse fire at a complex that burned down yesterday. the complex was under construction, but the material fueled the fire. those flames shooting 50 feet into the air at some point. the plume of black smoke could be seen from all parts of the south bay. the heat so intense,t it caused nearby buildings to start smoking. we have the latest on the fire. >> reporter: from sky ranger you can see the flames towering dozens of feet into the air. you see the intensity. >> i could feel the heat,

development was going to look like. these are renderings described by the developer as a luxury condo with sophisticated mediterranean architecture. pride weekend is here. it all started with action with a trans march. thousands of people marching from deloris park to the tenderloin. the march is considered one of the largest trans events in the country. this year the mayor announced $2 million in funding to address issues like homelessness in the trans community. given the political climate, many people say it's important to get involved. >> what's going on now with the political cloud, it's a huge, huge issue nowadays. for me, pride means loving each other as who we are. >> often they have the parade, we like pull the shutters up and go to sonoma for the weekend. but we're staying this time.

i think it's important to just show up. >> this weekend's biggest event is tomorrow's pride parade. yesterday volunteers put some finishing touches on the 35 floats that will be in the parade. democratic presidential candidate joe biden is scheduled to attend a fundraiser in los altos this morning, this after being in san francisco last night. he later headed to belvedere to meet with supporters. guests arrived about an hour before the candidate. supporters talked about why they support biden and thursday's debate. >> i don't think he did a great job, although i think he's getting a little unfair criticism on racism. >> he should have been better prepared. he was wonderful when he was talking about his son and

medical care. >> he spent an hour with supporters before leaving belvedere. senator kamala harris is also coming to san francisco. she'll be here today for one of five fundraisers scheduled this weekend. she plans to participate in the pride parade on sunday. if you missed this week's debate, we posted several memorable moments from both nights on our website. visit nbcbayarea.com. north korea is calling it a very interesting suggestion. president trump has invited kim jong-un to meet with him at the dmz between north and south korea this weekend. the president floated the idea on twitter yesterday saying he would meet him at the border just to shake hands and say hello. the president is already in asia as he attended the g-20 summit in japan. north korea says it has not received an official proposal. if the meeting were to take place, it would be the first time the u.s. and north korean leaders had met in the dmz.

a federal judge causing a major setback for president trump's border wall. the judge blocking the administration from using $2.5 billion in military funds to build a wall along the southern border, including in parts of california. the judge issuing a permanent injunction, preventing construction from moving forward. the trump administration is expected to appeal. two people are in the hospital following a fire in contra costa county. the fire broke out yesterday at a senior apartment complex in antioch. a spokesperson saying it started in a downstairs unit and spread upstairs. witnesses say they heard some kind of an explosion. >> when i came out i seen all the smoke. i walked over where the smoke was and it was like firecrackers going off, or bullets. somebody shooting. >> it turns out that noise was an oxygen tank that exploded. the two people hurt are being treated for smoke inhalation.

and in the south bay, a driver was hurt in a fiery crash in los gatos. sky ranger was overhead. that car went over the cliff, flipping over starting a brush fire. this was right off of shannon road. that driver was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay. the fire was quickly contained. and we're all used to hearing about those potple hoho oakland. this is a sinkhole and it's getting bigger. sky ranger flying over that area yesterday evening. that sinkhole is about eight feet by ten feet. it's located on shafter avenue between 48th and 40th streets. you can see the sinkhole and the road blocked off. this is so no one gets hurt. crews are working to fix that problem. 7:07 for you right now. much more ahead here on today in the bay. got illegal fireworks? here's your chance to turn them in without facing any penalty.

taking a live look outside in walnut creek. a beautiful start to our saturday morning. 7:10 for you right now. it is that time of year. cracking down on illegal fireworks. as the fourth of july approaches, east contra costa county is hosting its first ever fireworks take back program. drop off any fireworks, no questions asked. we have the story from antioch. >> all the back fence area and side fence were burnt up. >> reporter: this man's back fence is destroyed and this grassy field is scorched after a fire ripped through the east antioch neighborhood two weeks

a new flaw has been discovered in the computer system for the boeing 737 max. regulators found a problem with the plane's ht system. more than 500 have been grounded since march. this is following two crashes overseas. it's unclear when the 737 max planes will fly again. fireworks, friends and barbecues. fourth of july is right around the corner. since the holiday falls on a thursday, it might be the perfect chance to hit the road for a long weekend. record travel is expected next week. >> we're projecting massive travel going to pick up on wednesday before the holiday. and in those larger actual areas, you're going to see travel times from two to four times longer than normal. >> they also say that more crashes can happen because drivers tend to get more distracted in traffic. it's an end of an era.

warmup. let's talk about today's forecast. we're going to be running a couple degrees warmer. this is going to put us into more seasonable temperatures. san francisco, high of 65. palo alto, 77. san jose 80. it will be a little breezy through the afternoon. that's what's going to keep our temperatures a little bit more comfortable along the coast line. santa cruz will be at 76. let's talk about the beach forecasts, i know a lot of people will be heading out this weekend and in through the week ahead with the fourth of july activities coming up. we'll keep that cloud cover by 12:00 we'll remain in the mid 60s for monterey. it won't be bright and sunny, but it will be quite comfortable and nice to hang out. again, i would just hang out on the sand. no going into the water for me. pacifica will be a little bit cooler. 60s, only mid to low 60s in through the afternoon. and cool off because by tomorrow, if you're heading to san francisco's pride parade, it starts at 10:30, the weather is

going to be fantastic. any cloud cover that we start our morning off with tomorrow will burn off by about 11:00, 12:00. right around towards the end of the parade things will start getting really sunny. the temperatures will warm up into the upper 60s. that's going to be a very pleasant afternoon. everyone goes out there, have a great time. share your photos with us, we love to share them on our social media sites. let's talk about the long range outlook. slightly warmer temperatures, cool coast, 60s and 70s. valleys will warm into the upper 80s. by wednesday and thursday we get a bit of a high pressure system that's going to warm us up. that could force our valleys to near the 90s. this could turn into a dangerous situation considering we've been giving you warnings about you're not allowed to set off fireworks. once we warm up and the winds picks up it dries us out. it brings fire danger. please don't light your own fireworks, it's not a good idea. we'll keep the breezy conditions

morning in "today in the bay." perhaps he could use a virtual assistant. bob says no. are you hiring? >> i'm not. >> reporter: the internet advertised otherwise. a scammer posted this job opening using bob's name and photo. claiming he was hiring a virtual assistant. >> it looks legit. >> reporter: tomika smith in houston, texas, took the bait and the job. first, she had searched bob redell online. >> he's actually a news reporter. >> reporter: quickly, the impostor funneled about $12,000 into her bank account. he then directed her to withdraw cash and feed the bills into this unusual atm that converts cash into bitcoin. what did they tell you the money was for? >> he said he needed to pay bills and buy some supplies. they only accepted the btc form of payment. >> reporter: once it went into the atm, it vanished. the scammer hacked a bank account in detroit.

that's where the money he sent to tomika came from. he transferred money to there to tomika. she'd been hired as a mule. she discovered that when her bank flagged the transfers. >> this is a scam, we're freezing your account indefinitely. what do you mean? this is not a scam? i am doing a job here. >> reporter: the bank recalled the transfers to return the money to its rightful owners in detroit. remember, the cash was already gone. tomika had already converted it to bitcoin and transferred it to the scammer. which means tomika is on the hook for the $12,000. >> a whole lot of money i don't have to pay. >> reporter: we asked the banks and the atm operator if there's anything they could do to help tomika. they said no. she's now asking the public for help on gofundme. >> meet them in person. you know. make sure they show you their

in san francisco. this is a view right now at the golden gate bridge. we've got cloud cover there. breezy conditions. a current temperature is 56 in san francisco. it's 57 in san jose. 49 in santa rosa. this is going to be our coolest start to the morning so far. by the afternoon, things are expected to warm up and we're going to climb into those mid 70s by 12:00. 74 in san jose. the interior valleys will get more of the sunshine and also the warmer temperatures. if you're going to be around the coast line you'll see more cloud cover throughout the afternoon. this will set us up for a lovely weekend ahead. it's also going to be our kind of in towards the warmer temperatures, which could be nearing 90s around the fourth of july. i'll break that down for you in 15 minutes. >> good weather for a barbecue. >> yeah, it is. well, the fire is out, but there is still a lot of work to be done.

to the border to see the situation for herself to try to help. disturbing accusations of patient abuse at san francisco's hospital. 23 patients at the city run laguna hospital say they were abused by staff members. yesterday, the mayor and other city officials addressing the allegations. the attacks include physical and verbal abuse committed by six staff members since 2016. it's all uncovered by the city's public health department. but we've confirmed no one has been arrested or charged with a crime yet. >> the misconduct we discovered included sexualized conversations with residents. verbal and physical abuse. neglect, privacy violations, medication errors, and the administration of non-prescribed substances to some residents in an attempt to pacify them. >> the ceo and head of quality control were immediately

removed. san francisco's special victims unit is continuing to investigate the abuse. some major development in the mystery surrounding a missing college student in utah. it's not the news so many had hoped for. police say that they've arrested a man on suspicion of kidnapping and murder. nbc >> reporter: with guns drawn, the arrest was made by the salt lake city s.w.a.t. team. the man taken into custody will be charged with murder, kidnapping and the desecration of a body in the disappearance of 23-year-old mackenzie lueck. >> investigations so her last communication was with the arrested person. >> reporter: investigators spending 19 hours scouring the property. they unearthed evidence they say

the suspect tried to burn. >> the resulted in charred items. >> reporter: vanishing 12 days ago, police say the university of utah student and the suspect were texting before she arrived at the salt lake city airport. investigators say she took a lyft to a park where a car was waiting for her at 3:00 a.m. detectives say the suspect and victim's cell phone registered in the same area before mackenzie's went dark. a member of the utah national guard and a self-published author who wrote of murder. he also rented rooms in his house at air bnb. >> he tried to friend me on facebook and i just didn't accept it just because it was a little weird. >> reporter: tonight police are offering no motive for the murder, but they say they now have the man who killed

the north bay wildfires. >> reporter: the north bay firestorm in october 2017 left 44 people dead and charred a quarter million acres. state regulators are taking the first step to fine the company for fire safety allegations. among the accusation, that the company disposed of potentially critical evidence in two of those fires. they also say pg&e records reflect fire trimming when it hadn't. >> i don't know what we're going to have to see for something to change. >> reporter: state senator hill said he heard the same accusations after the the pipeline explosion. they found safety short cuts and evidence destroyed. >> what the charges are they're looking at with pg&e it looks like in almost ten years they still didn't learn anything.

it's the exact same problem we saw before. >> reporter: pg&e sent us a statement saying it's carefully reviewing the regulatory case as it prepares for fire season and deals with its bankruptcy. we understand and recognize the concern and acknowledge that while we have implemented significant additional wildfire mitigation measures following the devastating 2017 and 2018 wildfires, there is still more work to do. we are committed to doing it the right way. but the new revelations have hill nervous about this fire season. >> unless there's some major changes happening between last year and today, we'll see more fires. >> reporter: nbc, bay area news. 7:53 right now. big steps are being taken to combat the quick spreading dog flu. 206 dogs will be quarantined in oakland starting next week. the dogs are currently at the oakland shelter, but will be moving to a warehouse for four to six weeks.

>> we just got these. this happens a lot this time of year. it's kitten season. we just got these little guys in yesterday. somebody found them in the bay lands and picks them up and brought them to our shelter. >> we're seeing that a lot. you have pretty much like a big deal going on for people who love cats who are thinking of bringing a cat home. tell us about that. >> it's a special we're going to run through the middle of july. two for one. so the cost for usually a cat or kitten is $125. we're going to do a two for one. >> are they spayed and neutered or they can take care of all the shots? >> take care of shots, we do spaying and neutering, microchip, give them the vaccines, any medical conditions they have we take care of. >> why is it important for family members who are thinking of getting cats? they love to be -- i'm sure these are very kid friendly pets. >> yes, they are, very much so. despite the fact these were probably feral cats for a well,
