7:02 am
night, one that had a little drama. this comes days after the two presidential hopefuls faced off in the first democratic debate. "today in the bay's" sergio quintana has details. >> reporter: she didn't say much but when she took the stage it was clear she was on her home turf. shared a store about her mother giving advice about difficult people when she was a kid. >> she asked what are you going to do about it? so i decided to run for president of the united states. >> reporter: it was standing room only for this event at manny's in the mission. harris had to pause her stump speech to help a woman who nearly fainted. harris' husband helped the woman to a seat outside the venue. the campaign swing through san francisco on pride weekend is no accident. among those chris perry and sandy steyer. harris officiated their wedding as attorney general six years ago. >> it's anniversary of stonewall and the prop eight ruling. we're on the cusp of senator

harris taking the lead in the democratic field. >> reporter: as harris campaigned here, fellow democratic presidential contenders show their solidarity by calling out a social media effort questioning harris' heritage. mayor pete put gig, senator warren and beto o'rourke denounced what they called racist attacks. sergio quintana, nbc bay areaious. >> senator harris is on a hot streak. her campaign reports she brought in $2 million in the 24 hours after her performance during the debates earlier this week. former vice president joe biden also in town. yesterday he was in lost ago toes for a fund-raiser of his own at the home of a former twitter executive. on friday he attended fund-raisers in san francisco and belverdere. president trump meeting with kim jong-un in the demilitarized

zone. he becomes the first u.s. president to meet with the leader of north korea face to face at the dmz. they are meeting at a time of escalating tensions. critics warned meetings give legitimacy to kim and remove pressure to get the north to rid itself of nuclear weapons. >> very, very good meeting with chairman kim and we agreed we're going to designate a team and the team will try and work out some details and again, speed is not the object. we want to do a comprehensive, good deal. nobody knows how things turn out, but certainly this was a great day. this was a very legendary, historic day. >> the meeting between the two leaders lasted about 50 minutes. this isn't the first time president trump has met with the north korean leader. they have met twice before, just not at the dmz. back here in the bay area, a drag race in oakland ended with a driver killed. it happened yesterday at 5:00 on
7:05 am
san leandro street near the coliseum. oakland police say it was a street race. one driver was racing against another car, lost control, and hit a light pole. you can see pictures of the car. it is completely destroyed. we told you about two weeks ago oakland police adding more officers to try to stop car racing and side shows and they are doing so every weekend this summer. new details today on the large trash fire that sent a lot of smoke over san jose ned evening. firefighters say the pile of trash that burned was from a homeless encampment that had recently been dismantled, it happened around 5:00 at the mayberry road corporate yard near 101. this is the crash pile after crews got the fire under control. no word yet what was in the pile that caused it to catch fire. the party went deep into the night in the castro all part of pride weekend in san francisco. events happening all over the city throughout the day, including the 27th annual dike march that happened at 5:00 last

persecute gay people. the tradition started in san francisco 23 years ago. it was illegal at first, but has since been embraced as a symbol of pride. our coverage continues online. go to nbcbayarea.com for a link to our pride guide. there you'll find more information on all the festivities planned for today. some quick action by local heroes in the east bay may have saved the lives of two of their neighbors and a family pet. the fire started late friday night in a garage in castro valley. neighbors heard at least two explosions when the fire started. one neighbor called 911 but before firefighters could arrive, two off-duty police officers and a retired fire captain, who lived around the corner, jumped in to action and rescued the sleeping couple and their dog. >> the dog ran under the bed, i pulled the dog out from underneath the bed and grabbed him by the, you know, the collar and by a foot and another foot and handed him to the homeowner and then i said okay, now we can get out of the house. >> the couple is okay and so is
7:08 am
their dog. the fire department said it's investigating the cause. the flames are out but investigators say they still do not know what sparked a fire at a large construction site in santa clara. that fire started late friday night on el camino reale. fire crews put out the flames and secured the construction site. they continue to battle flare-ups throughout the day but they say that's normal. look at the flames tearing through what would have been new condos. a construction worker was hurt trying to get away from the fire. one person of interest was detained but later released. the san francisco giants announced the ceo larry baer will return this week. major league baseball suspended baer after this video surfaced several months ago. it shows him getting into an altercation with his wife. baer focused on regular counseling during his three-month absence. his first day back is tuesday. he will no longer be the public face of the franchise.
7:09 am
baer said he was sorry and added "i've been able to step back and take stock of myself as a person and as a leader. i am wiser for it and the work continues." coming up, we'll take you live to washington, d.c., for our weekly interview with chuck todd who moderates "meet the press." found alive after a week in the wild. how did he survive? we'll hear one hiker's story.
7:10 am
7:11 am
welcome back. time is. :11. it is time for our weekly chat with chuck todd, nbc news political director and moderator of "meet the press" and alongside me nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston. chuck, thank you for joining us on this sunday morning. >> of course. >> of course. >> before it we get into the debates, and we will, president trump meeting with north korean leader kim jong-un in the dmz
7:12 am
after meeting with leaders like vladimir putin and saudi crowned prince in japan. what are your takeaways of what happened over the last few days? >> let's separate out north korea from the others. i think the president is more comfortable sometimes dealing with the authoritarian leaders of the world because it's so transactional, and that's the most familiar type of relationship that he's had over the years or transactional relationships. you don't have to like the person across the way if you can have a win/win real estate deal. that's why he almost gravitates a little bit in that sense, but on north korea, look, i do think the president continues to try to recapture what was his signature moment as president so far, the first summit with kim jong-un, which led to the high job approval ratings in his presidency, our polling or much of the polling world. i think north korea is a story
7:13 am
the president tries to go back to and recapture what he thought was a great moment for him. i think talk something always good. no one is going to criticize his ability to do this. the question will be, does it lead to anything? the first didn't, the second didn't. will this? at some point there's diminishing returns how often can you just go back to a good pho photo-op. >> elizabeth warren and kamala harris seemed to tower over the others at last week's democratic debates. in contrast to hillary clinton in 2016 maybe the democratic party is leaning more to the left for the 2020 presidential election? >> well, larry, the candidates certainly believe this, right, they acted that way. this to me is a question. it's interesting, our nbc/"wall street journal" poll among democratic primary voters 48% call themselves liberal and 48%
7:14 am
moderate or conservative. but twitter isn't that way. social media isn't that way so i think that's going to be the question, how much is this democratic field reacting to social media liberals versus maybe the democratic primary that's going to show up to the polls and is there a difference. i think right now the joe bidens of the world say look at my polling that shows you that what is a leading indicator on twitter is nothing more than a leading indicator of what's on twitter, so perhaps that's the case. here's what i think the fallout is from this debate though, larry, is that everybody's going to look at what kamala harris was able to do with biden, and i think the next debate will have 19 candidates trying to create a moment with biden, whoever ends up on the stage with him or even those that don't, and i think we're going to find out in the next six weeks can biden take it, because he's going to get more incoming than the debates. can he take it? that's what the next six weeks
7:15 am
will be about. >> do last week's performances by warren and harris show bernie sanders has lost his position as the unofficial leader of the progressive block and could that mean a healing of sorts between the progressive and moderate blocks we just discussed? >> well, it all depends on how quietly bernie sanders goes into the night, right? bernie sanders i agree that he seemed to flat, just sort of fall flat a little bit. i think his rhetoric sounded repetitive because you'd heard it four years ago so i think he certainly needs to figure out how to create new rhetoric around the ideas he's been championing for 40 years. that is a challenge for him and yeah, i tend to agree, warren was already surpassing him in some polling that i had seen in iowa and in south carolina in particular before the debates. i got to think that that
7:16 am
momentum for her is slightly going to increase and i think you're right. if she is the leader of the progressives, somebody who has said she is a capitalist, she wants to reform capitalism, does not call herself a democrat socialist. it would allow the moderate riff to be healed faster but you know, be careful counting out bernie sanders. his followers are devoted and the question is, how big is that following? >> we have a long time left. >> we do. >> chuck, thank you so much for joining us, and you can join chuck for this morning's "meet the press," he will have exclusive interviews with democratic presidential candidate senator cory booker of new jersey and republican senator john wiato of wyoming and heulian castro. tune in to "meet the press" at 8:00 right after this newscast and dr. gerston will be back in 40 minutes for our weekly political segment. we'll look into the debates, winners, losers and the candidates who aren't moving the
7:17 am
needle. plus a look at one of the first post debate polls. see you soon. an elderly man who disappeared while hiking in southern california a week ago has been found alive. talking about 73-year-old eugene jo. l.a. count y sheriffs officials say he got lost. members of a search team found him in devil's canyon. officials say jo had not eaten in five days and stayed high traited drinking water from a nearby creek. >> we were concerned what his condition might be. it got called in he was found it appeared at the time he was in remarkable condition, considering he's been without any provisions for a week. >> the rescue team took jo to a nearby hospital in pasadena. he's expected to make a full recovery. firefighters in east contra costa county are hosting their first ever fireworks take-back program, happening this weekend at station 59 in discovery bay
7:18 am
and station 53 in oakley. anyone who lives in the area can drop off fireworks, no questions asked. firefighters say it's an effort to stop the use of illegal fireworks during the upcoming holiday. >> they are very dangerous. we go on a number of different fires every year for illegal fireworks, can cause minor property damage to some bushes or trees, full-blown house fires. >> the take-back event continues from 9:00 a.m. today until noon in brentwood. vianey arana has a look at the weekend forecast. >> it's a good thing they're talking about this now. by the fourth of july forecast, dangers. let's get through today. sunday's weather is going to be beautiful, especially because we're not going to see any big changes. our weather has remained very comfortable. temperatures right now 57 degrees in the south bay, the peninsula 58, tri-valley 56.
7:19 am
we're cool, keeping the cloudy conditions in through san francisco, the east bay temperatures at 59 degrees. a little bit clear in north bay, 51 degrees and then let's look at satellite radar because we've got that upper level trough sitting just off the west coast area and that's keeping our temperatures at bay a little bit below seasonable but comfortable enough to the point where we can still go outside and enjoy without having to sweat too much. now we will continue to see that dominate over the next couple of days. we have clouds passing through, but our daytime high also eventually climb into the mid-60s, mainly for the bay and the coastline. san francisco 65, and if you go up through the north bay, take a look at santa rosa, 82 degrees. 72 degrees in oakland, and then talking about low 80s down through the south bay, so it will be a combination of sun and clouds through the interior valleys, but if you're going to be planning a day at the beach, right now it's a little cold, 55 degrees, this is a live look right now using our weather underground camera.
7:20 am
it's a little cloudy but look at your temperature trend. maybe you're headed out to pacifica, it will be a good mix of sun and clouds, again the temperatures remain fairly cool, talking 60s. we'll keep a lot of the cloud cover for the coastline and if you're headed out to lake tahoe, we still have some snow up there, can you believe it? we showed some video of people still skiing in summer earlier this week. a live look using our weather underground cameras, the weather is spectacular, 70s and sunshine, so whether you like the snow or you just want to go out to the lake, you'll be able to do a little bit of both, 2:00 to 3:00, mid-70s and if you're hanging out back home, you still have great weather to enjoy outside, again pride parade is tomorrow, the parade starts at -- tomorrow? today, what am i talking about? we're talking about breezy conditions, 65 degrees and tomorrow the breezy conditions will continue. as we head in towards wednesday and thursday, this is what i was
7:21 am
talking about, we will see elevated fire danger. the reason is because high pressure is going to dominate. the winds will kick up and the winds will dry us out, so our temperatures are expected to go up into the upper 80s, nearing low 90s, and a mix of hot temperatures, breezy to gusty conditions, and also all that dry brush out there could mean very dangerous. so that means no, please, no fireworks. let the professionals handle that. but hey, enjoy the work week ahead. we've got very calm, comfortable weather throughout the entire bay area really. i'll send it back to you. >> thank you very much vianey. coming up on "today in the bay," in just one day, you'll be paying more at the pump because of a law that was signed two years ago. we'll explain.
7:22 am
7:23 am
welcome back. it's one of the larger issues on the campaign trail, student loan
7:24 am
debt affecting millions of americans struggling to keep up with payments. a growing group is refusing to pay intentionally defaulting on their loans in protest. as morgan radford reports that decision comes with risk. >> reporter: this stack of papers is worth more than $80,000 in college debt. when you get these, what do you do with them? >> i put them in a pile and shred them. >> reporter: mark, who has asked us not to use his real name for privacy reasons, says he'll never pay it. is this a protest? >> it's definitely a protest. >> reporter: protesting what? >> the egregious debt, the private industry, all of it. >> reporter: he's part of a growing online community of debt defaulters. their goal, to spark a nationwide debt strike, drawing attention to the nearly 45 million americans with student loan debt and since each state has a limit on how long a creditor can try to collect on
7:25 am
private loans, mark says it's a site that also makes financial sense. >> if i were to default on the private loans then my rate goes down to 15% to 2025% of my income. that's way more reasonable than $2400 a month. that's double what i spend to here. >> you still have one last opportunity to resolve it. >> reporter: but experts say that strategy can come with a hefty personal price, especially if collectors decide to sue. >> worst case scenario is your credit is ruined for at least seven years or longer, your bank accounts are frozen, your wages are being garnished. the interest is accruing and you can't sell or buy your home. >> we need dramatic reform. i see posts all the time where people are concerned about, well, suicide might be my only option. it's overwhelming. >> reporter: what some see as a shred of hope, amid a national

crisis. morgan radford, nbc news, indianapolis, indiana. drivers will have to start paying more for gas starting tomorrow. state gas taxes will jump by a little more than a nickel. the latest increase, after governor jerry brown signed the new law in 2017. the money is supposed to go to fix roads and bridges across the state. much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up, confusion and cynicism. president trump's comments about california that are making headlines. plus tragedy after a trip to the county fair. the red flags being raised about petting zoos after the death of a toddler.

microclimate forecast on pride day. >> big pride day. we couldn't ask for a better day to go out and celebrate. i know a lot of folks are wondering about the cloud cover in san francisco. we have to show you a view of the sky, a view of the road, i will say this, though, that's a much better shot. downtown san jose your temperature trend through the afternoon will climb into the mid 80s, we're talking about plenty of sunshine. don't have to worry too much about the cloud cover through there. let's look at the predicted highs for the afternoon. again in san francisco, we're a little chilly right now, a little breezy as well. we'll keep the breezy conditions through the afternoon. we have a combination of good old sun and clouds but eventually we're going to get majority sunshine, and along the coastline as well expect to keep the breezy conditions through the evening hours. this is going to set us up for a continuation for the next several days.

the landscape has changed in a couple of respects, pushing some candidates up, sending some candidates down, and believe me, a large group unimpressive, uninspiring and unable to break through to a higher tier, but seriously, let's remember we're seven months away from the first primaries and caucuses, and that can be an eternity in american politics. >> if you think about it, it's been four hours of debate and seconds literally a couple of minutes per candidate. any move that you noticed and

good sunday morning. it is 7:54, and once again, we're waking up to the 50s and here is a look right now in san francisco. you can see it's a little cloudy, but hey this is normal for san francisco especially around this time of year. we got those passing clouds rolling through, we've got the upper level trough just off the west coast, hanging on tight, that's keeping our temperatures somewhat below seasonable but comfortable and it will continue to dominate over the next several days so get used to this forecast, because we're not going to see huge changes in the temperatures. 82 degrees for santa rosa today, san francisco 65, oakland 72, in through the south bay 80 degrees for san jose and warmer through concord at 83 degrees. we'll get better clearing through the interior valleys as well. i wanted to show you the live look of heavenly lake tahoe.

snow is hanging on tight, not working to melt just yet considering it's summer and the fact that we saw people skiing earlier this week is impressive, after all we did have a very great snowpack this winter. all right so lake tahoe, headed up there, gorgeous view there, using our weather underground cameras. so let's look at the forecast. this forecast is going to remain this way for the next several days, if you're just now headed up to lake tahoe expect to wake up to similar conditions tomorrow morning, making a nice breakfast. temperatures will be in the 70s with sunshine. how is that for a ski day? pretty nice. all right, so let's talk about your san francisco pride. it is today, and it starts at 10:30 and again, it's cloudy right now, a little gloomy and breezy. the breezy conditions will remain but notice our icons, we'll get a little bit of clearing in through the afternoon around the start of the parade, right directly though along the coastline we'll probably keep some of the cloud cover a little bit longer, it will linger and the temperatures

will climb into the upper 60s. great day for that. now over the next seven days we have some good changes ahead. again, we're going to keep the breezy conditions through tomorrow, the upper level trough hangs on tight through tuesday. wednesday and thursday we get a high pressure system rolling in and the high pressure will kick up the winds, which means it's going to dry us out and warm us up right around fourth of july celebrations, which means elevated fire danger. temperatures will go up into the upper 60s for san francisco, hopefully we'll get some good views of the fireworks in san francisco. we're always concerned about the fog so hopefully that high pressure clears us out. as we head in towards the interior valleys, that's where we can expect to see those nearing 90s. so upper 80s by the end of the work week, and aside from that, we've got pretty good, calm weather pattern going on. we've been enjoying this fantastic weather all weekend and looks like it's going to stay that way at least for the next several days. welcome to summertime, guys. >> looks very good. vianey, thank you so much.

before we go, flying high again. six months ago, people found this golden eagle with what appeared to be lead poisoning. it's thought it might have gotten it from an animal it ate shot with bullets or bb gun pellets. workers from the lindsey rehabilitation center nursed the eagle back to strength and on friday released the eagle at the diablo range in clayton. >> look at the weather, cleared for takeoff. so much sunshine. oh, i hope he's thriving. >> back here at home, a huge weekend for pride week, the parade today and how is the weather going to be? >> it's going to be great. remember to share your photos with us. i'll be on tonight again with terry and anoushah and maybe i'll share your photo. tweet me. >> thank you for joining us and making us a part of your morning. more local news tonight at 4:30, 6:00 and 11:00. stay with us all day on nbcbayarea.com. have a great day.
