"today in the bay" continues right now. a very good now wednesday morning to you, half way through our work week. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. vianey in for mike with a look at the commute, we'll get to that in a bit. first want to talk about something to make you smile. meteorologist kari hall is tracking the weather for us. i love it. >> it's been really nice the past few days. it's good to know there's no change today. we're not seeing a lot of fog in san francisco, starting out with mostly clear skies, headed down to the south bay, where our temperatures will reach up to 81 in gilroy and cupertino. east bay highs from 69 in oakland to 85 in pittsbusburg t. vianey has a look out the door. >> so far this morning, commuters seem to be on the go, but doing it safely judging by

the chp reports, no big accidents in through the east bay, starting to build along northbound and southbound 880, down through the south bay, also noticing a little bit more traffic out along 87, and in through palo alto. a little bit of a fender bender clearing out now. look at your south bay drives, highway 85 only looking at 11 minutes. smooth commute so far. the search is still on for the gunman who shot two people inside a mall in san bruno. look at the scene there. this started ahead of rush hour last night. the search causing frantic moments for b.a.r.t. riders trying to get home on both sides of the bay. pete suratos is live for us outside the san francisco mall. any updates we're getting? >> reporter: no updates as of yet but we hope to get details from police sometime this morning.

faran mall. as they continue to search for the suspects, the two victims were hurt in this, one in critical, the other in serious condition. the mall was put on lockdown of course as a result of the shooting. but the issue did extend to b.a.r.t., which is not too far from the mall and police say one of the suspects fled on a b.a.r.t. train across the bay to oakland. b.a.r.t. did have to close down the san bruno station which is right next to the mall we're standing, also shutting down the 12th street station in oakland, where police found a gun that may have been used by the suspect. not knowing exactly why this was all happening. >> everyone got scared and everyone ducked down. >> i was just like in panic mode and a bunchf tre and started screaming "get out, get out, get out" so we all just ran and i was scared. >> reporter: now amidst the chaos, there were folks that jumped in to take action, to help some of the victims in this mall shooting. we'll have more on that in the

next half hour. reporting live from san bruno, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> all right, pete, thanks so much for that update. nbc bay area's ali wolf was one of the first on the scene of the news as it broke and stayed throughout the night. she posted several updates including videos on twitter as the situation developed. be sure to follow her on twitter. >> it is 5:03. tomorrow military tanks will be rolling through the streets of washington, d.c., as part of this year's july 4th celebration, part of president trump's planned event. "today in the bay's" tracie potts is live on. ka toll hill whe capitol hill, what it will look like, how much it costs and where the money is coming from. good morning, tracie. >> exactly. good morning, laura, good morning, everyone. remember president trump wanted this big military parade after he came back from france's bastille day two years ago. now he's setting up the july 4th celebration to mimic that to

some degree. not everyone here thinks that's a great idea. >> in many cases, the highest. >> reporter: president trump is promising a salute to america like no other. >> we're going to have planes going overhead, the best fighter jets in the world, and other planes, too, and we're going to have some tanks stationed outside. >> reporter: plus the traditional fireworks after the president speaks at the lincoln memorial about patriotism, and he says health care. >> the republicans are going to save preexisting conditions. what the democrats' plan is going to destroy the country. >> reporter: to some it feels more like a campaign rally. >> this is not saluting america. it's saluting trump. >> reporter: his campaign is giving out vip tickets to top republican donors, similar to how congress provides tickets to their events, a spokesman says. >> mr. president, how about a hotdog and a hamburger, rather than an extravaganza? >> reporter: air force one and the navy's blue angels are doing a fly-over on what was supposed

to be their day off. >> believe me, they would rather be having a beer and be at a barbecue on the fourth of july like the rest of the country. >> reporter: a source tells "the washington post" the national park service is shifting $2.5 million from repairs to fund and secure the event. but we still don't know how much the entire event will cost. laura? >> we'll have to find out that price tag. thanks so much, tracie. new for you this morning, a judge will now reconsider the recent $80 million award to a bay a miller roundup. jurors in march ruled monsanto must pay edwin hardman that much in damages. he used roundup on his property for years before he was diagnosed with nonhodgkins lymphoma. the judge will reduce the award by as much as half or even more. hundreds of similar lawsuits

have also been filed. in a separate case last year, a judge dramatically cut the award for a vallejo man. monsanto remains confident roundup does not cause cancer. people everywhere are getting ready for tomorrow's fourth of july celebrations, but the fear of fire started by illegal fireworks is building. fire crews in contra costa county held a demonstration to alert neighbors of the danger of using illegal fireworks just how quickly fires can start. even the kind that are considered safe. people are being given a simple stern warn being using fireworks. if you're caught with the fireworks you could face some hefty fines and possible prison time. >> fireworks are illegal everywhere in contra costa county, every type of firework. settg off fireworks, check see what fireworks, if any, are legal. a follow up in southern is prisoner. a military jury yesterday acquitted chief edward gallagher

on all but one of seven counts. the 19-year veteran was accused of multiple war crimes. gallagher says that he is relieved. >> yes, happy and thankful. >> i was feeling like we're finally vindicated after being terrorized by the government that my husband fought for, for two decades in the war on terror. >> gallagher was found guilty of posing with a human casualty, whicholuntary of the uniform code military justice. he's expected to be sentenced for that today. in a san francisco hospital stairwell is now filing suit against the city. in may of 201875-year-old ruby anderson left a care facility at zuckerberg general hospital and never returned. 11 days later a worker discovered her body. "the examiner" reports family members claimed the center "did nothing to protect her, despite knowing she had dementia." anderson is not the first person to die in a stairwell at the

hospital. in 2013, another patient was found weeks after disappearing. her family later reached a multimillion-dollar settlement. new this morning a win for the beverage industry and soda lovers. the bill that would require health warning labels on sugary drinks has died in the california legislature. it would have required labels warning of obesity, diabetes and tooth decay for drinks with added sweeteners containing 75 calories or more. this is the fifth time the same kind of bill has failed to get enough votes. oakland is the latest city to take concrete action on dockless escooters. the city issued four permits allowing about 3500 rentable scooters on city streets. it follows a recent vote by councilmembers to regulate rentable scooters. the four companies receiving permits, lime, bird, lyft and clever. happening today, get ready to gorge. it's that time of the year for nathan's famous hotdog eating contest. san jose's joey chestnut appears to be set to defend that title

once again. ugh. chestnut and other contestants will be weighed later today for tomorrow's big event. last year, chestnut ate 74 hotdogs in ten minutes. if you're keeping score at home, that was a new record. the defending women's champion, miki suto ate 37 hotdogs in last year's event. i could maybe eat one and a half. >> i could eat two or three but as much as i love foot and hotdogs even -- >> you could eat more than that in ten minutes. >> i don't want to eat more than that. that's the issue. who wants to eat and they have to dunk it in water, the bread in >> no, i don't. >> you do that, you will be. >> a lot of people are getting ready barbecues, grilling and all of that stuff. if you have a competitive eater there, just turn away. here is a live look outside in dublin, and we are already seeing a lot of people up and out the door, going to work, and if you're about to head to the

dublin b.a.r.t. station, it will be in the mid-50s. we go from the mid-50s to the mid-70s at lunch time, mostly sunny skies. if you want to head out to the park in pittsburg today, we start out with mostly clear skies, some low 60s and we'll be in the mid-70s by noon and also going to see those temperatures continuing to warm up. so we'll talk more about the fourth of july. vianey is looking at the morning commute. looks prettt does. i like that park forecast. we've got an overall look at the bay area, the biggest slowdowns are through livermore right now but the east bay is also starting to show slowing. southbound 680 from 580 to vargas road ten minutes, also southbound 880 from 238 to highway 84 ten minutes and i want to give you a live look right now at the bay bridge toll plaza, because it's starting to slow down out there, about 5:10, the metering lights will come on any minute now. i'll send it back to you. >> thanks, vianey. more than a dozen operating rooms at a washington children's hospital remain closed this morning.

yesterday with more sunshine, highs in the low 80s. we'll talk about the fourth of july, coming up in less than five minutes. >> and a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. a nice view of the road and the sky, but it looks like the cash lanes and the fast lanes are starting to slow down just little bit. the metering lights aren't on just yet but you may want to head out the door now. a look at your drive times coming up. good morning, i'm frank holland at cnbc headquarters. here are today's top business headlines. wall street could see green arrows at the open this morning. yesterday the markets rising with the s&p 500 closing at another record high even as the optimism over the trade truce between the u.s. and china continues to fade. on today's watch list, reports on hiring in the private sector and the trade deficit. the markets closed early today ahead of the holiday at 1:00 p.m. eastern time. waymo gets the green light to carry passengers in california. state officials gave google's self-driving unit a permit to take part in a pilot program. there are a few restrictions.

waymo cannot charge operate riders and an operator must be able to take over just in case. it is the fourth company to take part in this program. it could eventually open the door to waymo offering a taxi service similar to the one it operates in the phoenix area. uber eats has a new option for people who like the ambience of a restaurant but hate waiting. a dine-in feature in dallas, austin a can pre-order their food on the app and then go and eat in the restaurant. the driver of the courier completely cut out of this situation so there's no delivery or service fee. diners arrange their own transportation, they pay through the uber eats app, they can even add a tip. for uber, this an easy way to make cash from restaurants it partners with and for restaurants a way to fill their empty tables. i don't think uber eats offers caviar or five-star restaurants in tahoe so you're out. >> five-star restaurants

>> any white ball gowns in kari's klosset? >> absolutely not. we start out with needing a jacket. it's cool. a live look outside in san inland, pleasant hill b.a.r.t. out with sunshine stationt deg tore upper 60s at and upper 70s by e afternoon. here is one place you can check out fireworks today. that's sebastopol third of july temperatures in the upper 60s. have a jacket for the time the fireworks begin. also at the alameda county fair that's going on today, you'll be able to enjoy some nice weather in pleasanton. we'll have some upper 70s during the middle of the afternoon and once again it will cool off fairly quickly as we head into tonight. so fourth of july marine layler stay for the coast. that means it will be unsettled

at times. we could see the fog rolling by, you could clear out and it's hard to tell exactly at the time the fireworks begin if we'll see that fog rolling in. for the bay, it's mostly clear and for the inland areas, we have clear skies and also mild temperatures, so here is a look at our weather setup headed into the weekend. we still have high pressure and a nice onshore wind flow with northwesterly wind. headed into the weekend, though t will start to warm up as our winds blow a little bit more offshore, going into friday, as well as saturday. by early next week, there will be a system moving across the pacific northwest that will deliver some cooler air to the bay area, and that means our temperatures are heading back down. so we're in the low 80s today, as well as tomorrow. then some upper 80s in time for saturday, we'll bring it back down several more degrees and then watching out for those temperatures staying in the 60s in san francisco. vianey, the roads are looking good. just seeing a couple of issues?

>> a couple of issues, right now making my way out to this report i did notice this crash popped up along the westbound side of the san mateo bridge so i'm going to look into that. speed sensors aren't picking up slow spots. look at the bridge drive times. we're starting to notice building commute through there. westbound 580m richmond bridge about seven minutes. westbound 80 toward the bay bridge starting to notice a slowdown from the fast lanes and the cash lanes ten minutes and westbound 92 toward the san mateo bridge 11 minutes. aside from the tri-valley buildup we're noticing a buildup through the south bay, look at that. this is a live look in san jose, we're going to expect to see the metering lights turn on probably within the next three to four minutes. so if you're driving through the tri-valley or northbound 880 as well expect to see slowing. i'll send it back to you. >> thanks, vianey. coming up, alexa, are you listening? that's what many amazon

dialed 911 from under the rubble, allowing rescuers to pinpoint his location. hours later they found the female victim. >> so we located her on information that we received from the family as well as from the first victim. >> now investigators don't know yet what caused the explosion. right now, firefighters are a m victims. divers are expected to be back in the waters of the rio grande looking for a 2-year-old migrant from brazil. border and customs agents say she disappeared monday while her family was trying to cross the river near del rio, texas. teams used an underwater vehicle, a dive team and boats just to search that river. this comes little more than a week after a salvadorean father and daughter tried to cross the rio grande near brownville, texas. a deadly mold outbreak at a

children's hospital, one patient died and five others infected by the airborne mold infestation. the mold was first detected in may but the outbreak has caused the hospital to close and completely disinfect all 14 of its operating rooms because it can cause severe infection during surgery. 5:25 right now. happening today, a 911 first responder who spent his final days pleading with congress for more benefits will be laid to rest. yesterday mourners attend the wake of lou iz alvarez on long island, he died saturday after a three-year bat well cancer. last month he and others including jon stewart demanded congress extend 9/11 victims compensation fund. los angeles angels said they could feel the presence of tyler skaggs. his body was found monday in his hotel room in texas and right now, no cause has been determined of his death.

before last night's game against the rangers, the angels hung skaggs' jersey in the clubhouse. on the field they held a moment of silence for skaggs, painted his number onto the mound as well. l.a. ended up winning that game 9-4. britain's prince harry is describing how fatherhood is helping him realize how important it is to have a good role model in life. harry and his wife meghan markle recently welcomed a new baby boy named ar the national youth mentoring summit in london yesterday. harry said that his late mother, princess diana had been a role model for many people. >> you don't have to be a princess or a public figure to be a role model. in fact, equally valuable if you are not, because it's more realizable. being a role model and mentor can help heal the wounds of your own past and create a better future for someone else. >> prince harry has been taking part in a new mentoring campaign called the diana award mentoring

today. we'll talk about the fourth of july forecast and all the events going on, coming up, and vianey has a look at the commute, only one little issue, right? >> we do have one issue, but the rest of the bay is doing okay. so let's get right to that crash. chp is reporting a crash along the westbound side of the dumbarton bridge, right after cory road. the number one lane if you're d fremont or newark, expect to see delays also out of fremont and newark, if you're driving in through the peninsula area, because that lane continues to be blocked and judging by our speed sensors it's starting to cause issues out there, some slowing early this morning. head out the door, hopefully they get that cleared out through the next half hour. back to you. >> thanks, vianey. right now the search is still on for the shooter who gunned down two people inside san bruno's tan faran mall. it started ahead of last night's rush hour. it caused frantic moments for b.a.r.t. riders on both sides of

the bay. >> let's head to san bruno where "today in the bay's" pete suratos is there, and we can expect from law enforcement sometime this morning an update? >> reporter: yes, that's the plan. good morning to you, laura and marcus. we're standing in front of san bruno police. we expect an update at some point this morning. while we wait for the update we want to show our viewers a glimpse of the chaos following the ma s san bruno police responding to the shooting yesterday yesterday afternoon and they don't believe the shooting was random, as they continue to search for those two suspects. two victims were hurt in this shooting, one we're being told is in critical condition, the other in serious condition and of course the mall was put on lockdown as a result of the shooting. amidst all of the chaos some people jumped into action to help the victims including two army staff sergeants who

"today in the bay's" bob redell live for us with the new numbers and a look at who the thieves are targeting. >> reporter: marcus the santa clara police department has seen the number of vehicle break-ins

sky rocket this year according to a report published by "the silicon valley voice." look at the numbers on your tv screen, break-ins are up over 120% this year, through may of 2019 compared to the same time period last year. a lot of the people who are committing these crimes, they're professional. they work in crews. they usually strikenight, monda through friday, during the week, and freeways so it's easier for them to get away. they're especially after laptop computers. "the voice" reports the bad guys use apps that search for your computers' bluetooth signal and indicates whether the laptop is stored in the cab of the car or the trunk, making it easier for the thieves to figure out how to steal it. police say they drive like maniacs, i'm quoting there, during their escape, because they know officers aren't going to pursue them if that puts the public at risk. "the voice" also reports the

state is providing about $3.75 million to the city cities of san jose, milpitas, fremont and newark to fight the rise in crime. santa clara plans to use that window than for anyth and new morning, we're learning about two arrests at the sf pride festivities over the weekend. both had to deal with illegal firearms. "sf chronicle" reports on saturday at a festival in civic center plaza sfefrz with the gang task force recognized 22-year-old ivanta bailey with a felony warrant. officers found a handgun and at the same festival officers arrested a man with a loaded gun inside a backpack. pet owners in one south bay neighborhood may want to think twice about leaving their pets outside at night. there is an apparent rise in coyote sightings. >> people who live near carlton elementary school along the san

jose/los gatos border say they're seeing more coyotes. some posting photos, putting up handwritten signs. wildlife experts say the number of sightings this year is about average. >> it was bigger than i expected. seeing it in person, like the eyes, you see and glistens, and not expecting to see that. >> numbers about the same as the past few years. what's changed really is people's perception. >> when you see one t is scare yea. experts say it's the combination in more sur violence and the rise in social media that gives the sightings more attention. generally coyotes stay away from people. an update to the deadly crash monday at sfo, an suv struck three people outside the international terminal, one of them died. the other two were critically injured. police arrested the suv driver. originally police said the driver cooperated at the scene and was not impaired. investigators now say he was driving at an unsafe speed. he's now facing vehicular manslaughter charges. that man who died is identified

as 33-year-old jedidiah cruz. from seattle. new details and the latest reminder, it's fire season, and firefighters have to be ready. they quickly put out a grass fire yesterday in pacifica on crispi drive, near the performing arts school. firefighters say it was caused by human activity but did not give any specifics. 5:38 for you right now. who says the giants are out for the race this year? >> can't be. it's too early. this week they're proving maybe it's too early to count them out. they played some inspired ball last night in san diego doing serious damage with the long ball. evan longoria hit his first home run in the second inning to give them the 2-1 lit and then he hit a second homer in the fifth helping lead the giants to the win and the final

[ applause ] >> that's a live picture in the south bay. let's get to your fourth of july forecast as you make plans and head around the bay area for the coast, san francisco, it's going to be at times foggy with some upper 50s in time for the fireworks. the bay will be in the low 60s and inland areas in the mid-60s and as we make plans also maybe you're headed to the fourth of july parade in danville, we are going to start out with a few clouds, cool temperatures tomorrow morning, and then by 9:00, the time that the parade begins, our skies will start to clear, we'll be at about 65 degrees, and then going into the festivities for the rest of the day, that should be a sun icon there, but it's goingbes, and then for san jose it starts out with some upper 60s, but then cools down pretty fast by

the fireworks begin, it will be 60 degrees, cool and breezy out there. our outlook for the whole bay area for the fourth of july it stays cloudy, at times foggy near the coast, but we will see some clearing, too. mostly clear skies for the bay and inland valleys. we'll have mild temperatures, and all clear skies. our weather setup is still producing some high pressure, just to our west, and then as we go through the rest of the forecast, it will heat up just a little bit in time for the weekend, and then cool off again early next week. our temperature trend goes up a few more degrees on friday, peaking on saturday and down for early next week. vianey, you've been tracking the roads. any issues now? bui >> we have a new crash in addition to the dumbarton bridge. let's get to that, in the south bay right now, chp is reporting a crash along northbound 101 at yeenathe slow lane is blocked a speed sensors are doing good but the accident was just reported. we'll expect to see slowing through there.
