his legal team claiming victory this morning, but it is not over yet. steve patterson has more from san diego where the trial took place. steve, good morning to you. >> reporter: craig, the jury is set to reconvene here in just a few hours to discuss the sentencer of edward gallagher. he was acquitted of the most serious charges, but his future with the navy at this point remains unclear. navy s.e.a.l. chief gallagher jubilant, leaving the courthouse with his wife is and legal team after receiving a not guilty verdict on six of the seven war crimes charges brought against him, including the most serious charge of premeditated murder. gallagher speaking out for the first time since the trial began. >> happy and i'm thankful. i thank god, and i leave with my wife. >> reporter: during the dramatic trial, gallagher remaining silent while his honor and his actions came under fire. his wife andrea has maintained

her husband's innocence and has been by his side through it all. >> we're finally vindicated after being terrorized by the government, that my husband fought for for two decades on the war on terror. >> reporter: inside the courtroom after the verdict was read, raw emotion from gallagher's team. his wife was heard sobbing. the couple embracing. >> after an almost two-year nightmare, we got a verdict today of not guilty on the murder. this is a good day. >> reporter: the decorated navy chief accused of killing a wounded iraqi prisoner during his deployment in 2017. over the two-week trial, prosecutors called members of gallagher's own s.e.a.l. team, who described him as unhinged testifying they saw him stab the young isis fighter. gallagher speaking out to fox news. >> this small group of s.e.a.l.s that decided to concoct this story in no way, shape or form represent the community that i loved and gave my soul to. >> reporter: but bombshell testimony from medic cory scott helped the defense, admitting under immunity that it

was he, not gallagher, who killed the detainee. gallagher was found guilty of wrongfully posing for photos with a human casualty. the punishment for the crime, yet to be determined. that lone guilty charge cannot carry the possibility of dishonorable discharge but can affect rank which could affect his retirement benefits, health benefits, even his pay. still a lot at stake for the family here. back to you. >> steve patterson, thank you. >> now to a new government report that puts the situation of the southern border in striking terms. newly released images of overcrowded detention centers are fueling a wave of protests nationwide. let's get right to nbc's gabe gutierrez in el paso, texas. gabe, good morning to you. >> reporter: kristen, good morning. this is one of the border crossings in plat. on the other side of the bridge is suarez, mexico, where thousands of migrants are

waiting to apply for asylum. until now we had not seen pictures of just how bad the backlog had gotten on this side of the border. this morning, newly released images are offering the clearest picture yet of what the government watchdog describes as dangerous overcrowding in migrant detention facilities. the report from the department of homeland securities office of inspector general reveals oning senior manager called the situation a ticking time bomb. investigators toured several stations in texas' rio grande last month. in this photo, inspectors say 82 men were in a cell with the capacity of 41. one migrant held up a sign with the word "help," writing he'd been in custody 40 been in custody 40 days. the report says these facilities, children had limited access to clothes, and some didn't provide access to hot meals. the overcrowding represents an immediate risk to the health and

safety of dhs officers, agents and those detained across the country from south florida to new mexic to california, protests under the hashtag, close the camps >> close the camps close the camps. >> reporter: demanding migrant detention centers be shut down >> this is a horrific situation. no child should be treated and held in a facility for this period of time >> reporter: federal authorities have repeatedly said they're facing an unprecedented surge of migrants. >> we're burning the candle at both ends to try to reduce that backlog while continuing to support our partners at the border and processing fairly all the migrants who are coming to the border. >> it is super troubling. >> reporter: in el paso, dr. rodriguez has treated migrant children after they were released. >> children should not be in a place where they don't have access to their basic human needs. >> reporter: now, once children are processed by cbp, they're then sent to facilities run by

another government agency. we should point out that according to an internal dhs document the number of migrant children in custody in the u.s. has dropped dramatically in the last month down from 2300 to less than 300 today. supporters of president trump say that is due to his administration's changes in asylum policies. credit sicks say critics say that's what happens during the hotummer nths there are house oversight hearings planned for next week back to you. >> gabe gutierrez reporting from el paso, thank you. meanwhile, this morning, u.s. military tanks have arrived in washington, d.c. ahead of president trump's huge independence day celebration, but there's controversy now over how much it may cost peter alexander joins us with details on that. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. two bradleys and a pair of abrams tanks, to be exact, is what has arrived in washington ahead of tomorrow's fourth of

july festivities the salute to america, as it is being called, is going to include a show of military might, featuring flyovers by the f-35, navy blue angels probably air force one, as well. the white house insists it is a non-partisan celebration, but critics complain the president is turning it into a campaign-like event. one saying it is disturbing. a democrat saying it is a vanity project. republicans, including the republican national committee and the trump re-election campaign, their donors have been given tickets to a vip area in front of the lincoln memorial. that's where the president is going to speak the democratic national committee tells me they have not received any tickets craig? >> so, peter, these are no small changes to the celebration how are they planning on paying for this >> reporter: good question the "washington post" today is reporting that the national park service is diverting nearly $2.5 million in fees, generally meant

to improve parks across the u.s., instead to help cover some of the additional costs for this year's expanded event. the trump administration has repeatedly refused to say how much taxpayers would pay for it. past july 4th celebrations on the national mall, those typically cost $2 million total, with this year expected to far exceed that figure craig and kristen? >> peter alexander from the white house this morning thank you. turning back to texas now, where a coroner's office has finished the preliminary autopsy report on baseball star tyler skaggs the findings have not been released for the 27-year-old pitcher who died monday. nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer is following this story good morning. >> reporter: good morning. although police have said they do not suspect foul play or suicide, the cause of tyler skaggs' death hasn't been released by the medical examiner, family, or members of his team how or why he did is unknown, has many mourn the shocking and sudden loss. >> a moment of silence in honor

of los angeles angels pitcher tyler skaggs >> reporter: before the los angeles angels returned to playing baseball, the entire stadium paid tribute to tyler skaggs, his memory heavy in their hearts and just above them >> today is one of the hardest days, and i know it gets easier. but it is difficult. >> reporter: with coaches, players, and fans brought to tears, the untimely death of the pitching superstar remains a mystery. the 27-year-old left-hander found in a texas hotel room unresponsive in the hours before his team was to take on the rangers. >> it's like a punch in the heart. it just -- you really don't -- you're so in shock. >> reporter: after police said they did not suspect foul play or suicide, the medical examiner's office conducted their preliminary autopsy. skaggs' family is requesting privacy. his record, which could have

indicated a cause of death, removed from the medical examiner's website. >> who knows where he could have gone from here >> reporter: drafted by his hometown team in 2009. >> swing and a miss. >> reporter: skaggs was a top talent and in the prime of his career, leaving behind a wife whom he just married last december skaggs was beloved by the league and especially his team. >> we wanted to, you know, take him out there with us, you know, one more time. >> just had such an infectious personality. he always lived life to the fullest and was always the one that wanted to, you know, pump everybody else up. >> reporter: this morning, heartbreak for the angels, while the mystery surrounding a young superstar's death deepens. >> it could take up to three months for the official autopsy report to be released. that is when we would have confirmation on skaggs' cause of death. his family and law enforcement, however, would know well before that this, of course, an incredibly difficult time for his loved ones guys, back to you. >> so emotional, to hear from

his teammates there. miguel, thank you for that this morning in north carolina, investigators are trying to figure out what caused a massive house explosion that left one woman dead and a neighborhood shattered nbc's gadi schwartz has been following this one gadi, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, craig. good morning, kristen. that's right, guys, the blast was so powerful, the home was completely leveled it took rescue crews nearly seven hours to find the woman's body in the wreckage incredibly, they were able to pull a man out of the home after he called 911 on his cell phone. he was badly injured but alive >> this is all that's left of a two-story home in an upscale charlotte suburb the home blown to pieces by a massive explosion. it is not clear what caused the blast, but neighbors say it could be held for miles. >> it was a boom so close that

literally i felt it in my chest. >> my walls were cracked open, and the garage was imploded. >> reporter: overnight, firefighters searching for survivors using listening equipment and space cameras. after sifting through the rubble for hours, they found the body of a woman. >> we are always hopeful, whether it is a building collapse, whether it is a fire, that we will be able to intervene and be able to make a difference unfortunately, that did not happen today. >> reporter: earlier in the day, a man who was inside the same house used his cell phone to call 911 he was able to tell first responders where he was trappe and, incredibly, they managed to pull him out alive. >> trying to get the victim untrapped. i could use more hands he has a beam laying across his hips. >> reporter: the victim air lifted to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. officials have not updated the status of the man in the hospital they're investigating what may have caused this deadly blast. >> my goodness, the footage, amazing that it wasn't worse gadi, thank you. >> appreciate it. now to some news that has us all feeling very patriotic ahead of the fourth of july holiday. the u.s. women's soccer team is headed to the world cup finals

good morning, guys fotis dulos sat down for an interview with wnbc. he involved any involving in jennifer's disappearance >> reporter: this morning, a bombshell in the case of jennifer dulos, a missing mother of five from connecticut the woman's estranged husband, fotis dulos, speaking out for the first time since she mysteriously vanished more than a month ago. fotis saying he had nothing to do with her disappearance. >> people who don't know me probably look at me as a monster and draw their conclusions i've been convicted, in their mind >> reporter: jennifer was last seen may 24th dropping her kids off at school. fotis and his girlfriend my smell troconis are accused of evidence tampering and are currently out on bail, pleading not guilty. >> i seriously pinched myself and said, this cannot be true. i'm wearing orange, and i'm in a cell, 6 feet by 9 feet this cannot be true. >> reporter: fotis would not comment on the evidence prosecutors say they have against him, including

surveillance videos of a man and a woman who investigators say matched the couple's description. according to arrest warrants, the pair seen on camera throwing blood. >> defendant's dna. >> reporter: last month, a prosecutor telling the court dna belonging to fotis was found missed with jennifer's blood inside her home. >> i have faith in the system, the legal system i have faith in the police and all the agencies that are working on this. hopefully, we'll have some answers soon >> reporter: the duloses were in a bitter custody battle over the couple's five children when jennifer disappears. fotis denies that was motive to do her harm. >> i never wanted jennifer out of the way

good morning. car break-ins are becoming a problem in santa clara. they're calling it an epidemic. there has been a number of break-ins skyrocket this year. they're up more than 120%. professional auto burglary crews are typically striking between 5:00 and 10:00 p.m. monday through friday. officers say they target large parking lots near freeways. some are also using bluetooth trackers to locate laptops locked in the cars and trucks. a pretty rough morning. we have a couple accidents on
