the day looks warm and humid it's perfect for that. we will have to deal with a stalled front that goes through the midwest and into the mid-atlantic that's along that frontal boundary we could see pop-up showers and storms later on this evening because those storms are occurring because of the daytime heating those storms should fizzle out lingering storms should be through the plains and upper midwest. still pop-up in nature some towns will get hit and some won't. you need to keep an eye to the sky, watch for the dark clouds, listen for the thunder and keep in mind the storms could be strong as they move through. same story for saturday. our best chance will be up and down the east coast, in the middle of the country it's hot and humid, although it will cool off a bit in the 70s and 80s

any staffers here shooting video or taking pictures to be used in campaign ads down the line. and if there are any campaign staffers present they will be using those tickets we talked about but they'll only be "spectators." sheinelle, kristen? >> thank you, kelly. meantime the justice department seems to be reversing its position on including citizenship question, a question about that in the census, after a tweet from the president. what can you tell us about that? >> reporter: well, that tweet, sheinelle, reversed the administration's course, the president defying his own departments of justice and commerce who said this week they would go forward printing the census forms without the controversial citizenship question. a federal judge saw that tweet and demanded answers from government lawyers who said they couldn't explain what the president meant but were ordered by president trump to try to find a legal way to add that question, despite the logistical and legal hurdles ahead. the judge wants an answer tomorrow. kristen, sheinelle? >> thank you. meantime at the southern border outrage is growing over

conditions in migrant detention facilities. this morning the head of homeland security is launching an investigation into what he calls disturbing social media posts allegedly made by border patrol agents. gabe gutierrez is in el paso with the latest as president trump weighs in as well. gabe, good morning. >> reporter: kristen, good morning. president trump has a blunt message for migrants. if you don't like conditions here on this side of the border don't come. but now doctors here are warning of the deep psychological toll this crisis is taking on children. this morning these drawings are painting a heartbreaking picture. the american academy of pediatrics says they came from 10 and 11-year-old kids after they were released from the custody of customs and border protection in texas. what do these pictures tell you? >> it's horrible. i can guarantee you within the next few years the psychological effect that it will take on

the last word. this morning for the first time in weeks chief edward gallagher will not have all eyes on him in military court the navy seal now free, but still being punished on tuesday gallagher was acquitted of murder, and other war crimes on wednesday he faced sentencing for taking a photo with a dead isis fighter the jury recommending a reduction in rank from chief to first class petty officer. gallagher's pay also reduce today two months and he was released with time served. >> we were hoping for a different sentence but at the same time that's not something that's finalized. >> reporter: the demotion would mean a reduced pension for the career military man but the commanding authority overseeing the case will now have the ability to approve, deny or reduce the sentence. gallagher's legal team feels there's a good chance it will at

least be partially adjusted. >> we're pretty confident that he will ultimately be allowed to retire at his current rank so continue to call him chief. >> reporter: the gallaghers telling "fox & friends" they're happy the ordeal is over. >> i feel completely grateful. and blessed. to have the support that i had this whole time from the country and from all the troops. >> now everyone in the country is able to see what we've seen all along which is my husband is a hero. >> reporter: the 40-year-old celebrating his acquittal by getting a huge tattoo of his wife's eyes, a tribute to her for religiously campaigning for his exoneration, new ink in various stages of progress on facebook his troubles began when the decorated navy chief was accused of killing a wounded iraqi prison but the trial turned when fellow seal team seven member corey scott, who has had immunity, testified that he, not gallagher, killed the young prisoner president trump congratulating the navy seal tweeting "glad i could help." >> it brought national attention to the case and brought us a lot

attacks on both coasts and for the south into the bahamas. >> the big question is how can you keep your family safe at the beach this holiday kerry sanders spoke to experts about what you need to know. >> reporter: what a beautiful morning, what a beautiful weekend for the beach. right here the water temperature is delicious of course, we have a little bit of seaweed here. if you're going into the water there are a few things that we can do to keep ourselves safe. as beach goers kick off the summer season there's an understandable fear this year, sharks in the news multiple attacks last month on swimmers in north carolina and the bahamas. it's the driving reason some parents tell us they're now hyperwary of even wading in the surf with their kids. >> i thought maybe we should go to the pool today. >> reporter: just last week 21-year-old american jordan lindsay was fatally attacked by a large tiger shark while snorkeling northeast of nassau in the bahamas.

>> i just -- whether there's known to be sharks, chum in the water, fishermen nearby, i'm putting myself at a greater risk. >> reporter: ocean life guard kristen ohito says being armed with basic first aid could be the key to survival. >> it may seem silly, my holding this, but the suggestion is from the experts punch it in the snout and punch it in the gills and that will cause the shark to release. >> if you're in the middle of a shark attack fighting it off might not be very effective. >> reporter: the most important thing after you've been attacked. >> the most important thing would be to know some first aid. >> while shark attacks are rare and in 2018 trended significantly lower than average worldwide, nearly a quarter of those encounters happened in florida. experts we spoke with offered these tips for swimmers, avoid the surf in early morning and evening when sharks typically feed always stay in groups.

good morning. it's 8:26. dublin police are investigating a single car crash that killed both people in that crash. it happened about 1:30 this morning near fallon road and anton way near the dublin ranch golf course. two men in the car died. their identities have not been released. their car struck a light pole in the center median and then caught fire. authorities are investigating a hit and run crash in san jose that happened around midnight near north capital and madden. one car crashed into the back of that minivan and sent it through a fence and into a cemetery. the car driver ran from the scene. the minivan driver was not hurt. and now we want to get a look at your traffic picture.

in general most of the country looks like we'll be seeing beautiful weather for this entire weekend >> happy fourth of july. i'm meteorologist kari hall. we're going to have great weather for the fireworks in san jose this evening. about 66 degrees with all clear skies. and if you are heading over to livermore, a little warmer to start for the block party but cooling off once again into the mid-60s there. and our inland valleys reach low 80s today. slightly warmer tomorrow. temperatures peak on saturday reaching 89 degrees and then cool off on sunday into early next week. san francisco, we're just watching out for the fog drifting by. and that's your latest forecast. >> all right, dylan, thank you. now to a special story for independence day there is no freedom without sacrifice, something military families all around the country know all too well >> we want to introduce you to a family who's been through it all.

16 years of service, three tours of duty. despite tremendous ups and downs they continue to live their lives in the same spirit of service as advocates for veterans and military caregivers alike. >> reporter: for carlos urbina the call to protect and serve was in his blood. >> my mom was mt. marine corps my aunt was in the marine corps. what made me want to go in there, to be honest with you, was the uniform. the dress blue uniform. >> reporter: he joined the marines at 19. was sent to iraq for his first tour of duty when he came back he felt different. >> i started feeling ashamed and guilty and depressed, and i didn't know why. >> reporter: despite his personal struggles he found the love of his life sharon. >> we met when i was in college. he had to chase me for a little

while but he wore me down. >> reporter: they got married after his second deployment when sharon says the scars of her husband's battle with mental health became easier to see. >> he was quicker to anger he didn't like to be in crowds he was up a lot at night getting him to admit that he had ptsd and he suffered from mental health issues was very hard. >> i gave up on myself and i gave up on the idea of ever being happy i just wanted it to be over. she pulled me through. >> reporter: sharon became carlos's full-time caregiver, encouraging him to try different kinds of therapy gradually he began to improve. >> i don't want to change what happened to me and i think the role that i'm supposed to play is giving back because i'm still here. >> i watch my husband wake up every day and want to battle his demons and that gives me the motivation

i need to fight for him and fight for us and fight for our family now. >> reporter: a family that's grown, after nine rounds of fertility treatments the couple welcomed their little miracle, adeline in december. >> he's an amazing father, he's very engaged he's obsessed with her. >> i was thankful that it happened when it happened because if it would have happened years ago i don't think i would have been able to be the father that i am. >> reporter: and this morning we have carlos, sharon and little adeline here with us this morning. isn't she precious >> she's precious. >> thank you guys so much for coming in. carlos, it takes so much to go through what you've done and you've come out stronger talk about why you still want to

volunteer and you're frankly serving others still now. >> we were shown all kinds of kindness through our struggles and our battles and we just want to give back we're still here and i mean we just want to make sure that all the guys and, you know, caregivers out there -- >> someone's got it. >> there are all kinds of guys out there that are getting the help they need we want to make sure we're showing them that we got help and it's not over and we're going to continue to fight but at the same time we want to help people get in a better place. >> and sharon, you're a fellow for the elizabeth dole foundation, an advocate for the 5.5 million military caregivers. why is that so important to you and how can other families who are out there help and get involved >> it's so important to advocate on a local level and at a national level just so that those caregivers and those people who identify as caregivers can access resources like through the hidden heroes.org but also get support from their neighbors if it's just a cup of coffee. >> that makes a difference, doesn't it? >> it does.

are bad flyers if you have a fan, they're flying into a head wind, that can help keep them away. wear light colored clothing. they're drawn to dark colors if you see something on you, like a tick, it's easier to see. >> i get a lot of bug bites standing outside the white house. i'm going to prop up a fan. >> make sure your screens don't have holes, make sure they're working. it can go a long way. >> repellants. >> if you are using repellant, we have three products, deet is the active ingredient in off we've heard a lot about it. >> that's the toughest stuff you want to look for about 25% to 30% deet. if you're looking for natural, we have two products here, one is called oil of lemon eucalyptus it's a refined version from the eucalyptus tree. that can be used in anybody, but not on children under the age of 3. >> is it strong enough >> very, very strong the other one is called

poteradin, synthetic version of something found in the black pepper plant this can also be used. for deet, it can be used in pregnant and breastfeeding women. not to be used in infants under the age of 2 months. >> how important is it to check with your doctor if you are pregnant >> it's a good idea. when we had zika a couple years ago the cdc and academy of pediatrics were on board with protecting pregnant women from mosquito-borne illnesses and we have here clothing treated with an insecticide. >> in the actual shirt. >> in the actual clothing. you want to read the label carefully to know how many times you can actually wash it and it retains its insecticide ability. >> and citronella. >> unfortunately if you're relying on this, just for mosquito repellant, not going to be as sufficient as the actual repellant. >> so do both. >> have it as an adjunct, but don't rely on it solely.

>> does it start to wear out >> it definitely -- usually after about 40 minutes it wears off. hours of protection with those. >> what happens if you get a bite >> if it's painful use an anti-inflammatory or a pain reliever for itch i like to recommend an antihistamine or a cortisone and an ice pack. >> ice pack. >> one of my favorites, i didn't realize was around for 30 years, sorry, everybody, is after bite. which is baking soda it's a big, big hit in my house now. >> just rub it on. >> it helps with the itch. aloe and honey. >> my biggest fear, ticks. >> if you do have a tick engorged in your skin, get it off before 36 hours. >> i'll call you. >> use gloves, clean the area with alcohol you want to take fine tip tweezers, go as close to the skin as possible pull up with a steady motion, not a twisting motion and i would recommend for anyone who thinks they have had a tick bite, ask your provider what

you're whipping up a red, white and blue menu for us. >> yes >> good morning. and thank you for your service >> i'm so happy to be here who would have thought in 1993 when i enlisted that i'd be here hanging out with the air force band with you, cooking. i'm happy. look at me >> can we do this? >> look at her shoes. >> i've got themed shoes. >> i thought i'd upgrade your red, white and blue. i think everyone probably already has the menu punch it up. for the red, if you're making steak or beef usually people just do a salt and pepper thing but i like to kick it up just a little bit differently we've got the salt, the pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, some paprika and curry powder. the awesome thing about curry powder, it's got so much going on, ginger, coriander, cumin >> it does it for you. >> it does so stir it up. the big ticket to make sure it's nice and juicy and gets the
